I saw the car I was driving in 2000. It WAS March 7, 2000. I was driving the car I was seeing.
I saw a man at the park with twin dogs, little fluffy white dogs. Whatever one did, the other did as well. I wondered, how can he tell them apart?
I saw a lady wearing blue and purple on my walk. I saw her later on the drive home.
I unlocked the door to my house and
I saw long, jagged grooves in the kitchen floor,
in the hallway,
a man with shaggy brown hair
and hooves.
“I’m afraid”

MMXXIV (Is this not for you?)
————————————————-
And oh by the way
When my father got home today
He measured everything
Of course he got it wrong
(Why couldn’t I have played along?
What if maybe that could’ve fixed it all…)
But there’s only so far I can go
I’ve been locked inside this hallway that keeps growing.
I think to myself,
Five more years and I’ll be here
Under the floor.

Here, where the grotto empties out onto the sand,
Only the stars above her, she sleeps.
Rain sometimes drives her just inside the entrance.
She cannot bear to be within The House by The Sea
Ever since that morning, almost a year ago.
Given the horrors of the encounter in the kitchen,
Until she feels safer, stronger, better arrayed,
A hard line is drawn; she will not enter The House. Yet.
Rather, she will devote her days to exploring the labyrinthine caves
Deep beneath the grounds, beneath the lagoon.
Taking her time, cataloging the treasures, reading the secrets,
Identifying what she needs, assembling her panoply d’ora.
Dismissing that which will not do, arms bared, a gift of the magpie.
Eventually, she will re-enter The House, confront The Papriky and say,
“Surprised you to find that I'm laughing?
You thought that you'd find me in tears
You thought I'd be crawling the walls
Like a tiny mosquito and trembling in fear”

Dear Mother,
No good deed ever went unpunished, did it?
I miss you and I’m lost inside The House by The Sea.
But I've got his pawns and his bishops
And castles
All inside the palm of my hand.
I will keep looking.
Love,
Pandora
