Before we had phone calls to communicate with relatives, we had newspapers and radios to get the latest news, and books to collect information and entertainment.
But now that we have the Internet, the Internet has paved the way for rapid communication with other people. We have made instant updates through social media. Collecting information through websites has become easier, and sharing information has become easier and faster.
However, there’s also harmful effects with the use of internet that can result a loss of quality of life, lack of privacy, decreased safety and security, and harm to social relations. Therefore, we need to be a user-friendly and always be cautious when using the Internet.
Before social media we have print media, when I was a child at that time there were still people selling newspapers whether they were on a bike or just hanging out the newspapers in their stores, I still remember every time my mother came home with a newspaper I would take the newspaper from her and I would immediately go to the cartoon section because I really like how they draw the cartoons and even though I don’t know how to read at that time, I was able to understand where the story goes in that cartoon. However, as time goes by, only few people are selling newspapers and I can no longer see other shops selling newspapers.
Having newspapers in my childhood really helped me to be creative or make funny illustrations.
It is no secret to us that the media plays an important role in people's daily lives. It is used as the main tool for interaction, presenting information, organizing things, etc. In the past, it was said that the media can only be considered a simple and laborious task but with the continuous development of technology as well as the development of the media, people's perceptions and standards are being changed based on the information that they receive or obtain.
The media became our main source of entertainment and information and it is also widely used to communicate with people all over the world.
Overall, it is undeniable that the media plays an important role in human life. Over the years, it has been changing. Its importance in our daily lives cannot be underestimated, but hopefully it will not become a distraction for us or lead us to harm other people.
It is important to be informed with our surroundings. Just like this year, many things have happened, such as the eruption of Taal volcano, the spread of COVID-19, the new face of Manila bay and many more events. These events were easily spread and communicate people through the use of social media.
Before the eruption of Taal volcano, I was able to receive information that the Taal volcano was going to erupt and realized that I was fortunate to be informed. This made me aware and prepared for the catastrophic event. However, this also made me sad, because I saw some updates, that there are a lot of animals are left by their owners and some of them are exposed from the ashes.
Before COVID-19 completely spread in our country, I have been able to prepare and become aware about this virus. However, I also realized that the information is limited, and only those who have their gadgets are able to be informed easily. One of the reason why the information is limited to some people, it is because of communication barriers that it's difficult for them to access information due to lack of media literacy or availability of technology that information may be restricted.
I can also use social media to get updates from various countries, which also made me aware of their situation.
Social media makes our communication easier. It makes us aware of our surroundings and helps us survive and prepare.
“I think there is an obligation on the part of all of us to stay informed and aware”.
