We’ve heard Armie saying all the nice things about his experience making the movie and how amazed he was/still is, and, for me as a fan of his, and of the book and of  the whole plot of cmbyn, i was beyond satisfied, but, man, this interview(and we have just this piece until now) revealed a lot of good things…

The way he captured not just Oliver’s, but also Elio’s essence, and the dynamic of their relationship…

I’m in heaven. I really am.

Feels like A little confused about the summer romance thing but definitely enjoy the movie shooting

What was the most enjoyable or the most rewarding part of the film for you to shoot?

so I saw Call Me By your Name last night and it was amazing. I’m putting some thoughts/observations behind the cut. there will be spoilers, so proceed with caution. (also I went to a session with a Q&A with Luca Guadagnino and he jokingly mentioned wanting to do a sequel !!!)

The look/aesthetics of the film are so beautiful. I hate summer but all I wanted to do when I got home was find a house to stay in for two months this summer so I could spend my days reading and swimming and eating fruit.

Armie and Timothee are so wonderful in their rolls. Armie probably does look a touch older than he should but he’s so great you end up not caring.

I don’t recall the characters ages are ever being explicitly stated. There is obviously an age gap but how much is never said. The relationship is in no way predatory, everything is consensual.

i'm going to need you to describe their first time in vivid detail, tree climbing and undressing and all that jazz. sorry to sound assertive but i need this for science!

I literally couldn’t believe my eyes and thought I was having a fever dream but I’ll do my best to piece together what I know.

So, it all goes down the night the gay couple from Chicago comes to visit. Elio is playing piano for our godfathers André Aciman and Peter Spears when he says he’s tired and needs to go to bed. A likely story.

Oliver is waiting for him upstairs on the balcony. Elio rests his hand beside Oliver’s on the railing and then Oliver places his hand on top of Elio’s. Elio says, “I’m nervous.” It’s pure and Oliver smiles reassuringly.

They walk into Oliver’s bedroom. They are both standing in front of each other and it’s pretty awkward. Oliver asks him if he’s okay and Elio responds with “me okay.” They are in each other’s arms and you can already see that Elio is getting restless. I am afraid for everyone. Oliver asks, can I kiss you? And this where Elio goes nuts.

He lets himself go limp in Oliver’s arms and playfully opens his mouth making Oliver both hold him up and kiss him. Oliver is all of us, smiling with amusement, confusion and lust.

I’m not even sure how to describe what happens next. Timmy keeps throwing himself at Armie like a rag-doll, collapsing against his chest and hanging off him as they kiss and kiss and kiss. Armie is built like a tank and is withstanding all of this, smiling at him with total adoration. I can’t even imagine what’s going through this man’s mind. He’s desperately trying to hold onto Timmy!

Then Timmy hooks a leg around him and starts climbing his body while they are kissing. He wraps both legs around Armie and Armie is holding him with almost no effort. I think his hands are on the small of Timmy’s back and Timmy has his arms around his neck. They are kissing like CRAZY and all you hear is breathing, sighing and moaning. Everyone is out of breath, including me.

At some point Oliver closes the door, which is a funny moment because the door makes this really loud bang when you close it and he forgot. Then they sit on the edge of the bed. Elio puts his foot on top of Oliver’s and weaves their toes together like he does in the book. Once again, Oliver is all of us, and smiling he says “what are you doing?” and then, I believe, the “Does this make you happy?” line, from the book.

Then they start kissing in earnest on the bed. They are on their knees and Oliver’s hands are everywhere. My life is flashing before my eyes. There is no playing around anymore. Oliver wants Elio naked and we hear the “off, off” line as they are taking off Elio’s t-shirt. Elio is trying to get Oliver’s clothes off at the same time but then winds up on his back desperate to undo the buttons on his own shorts. Oliver is kneeling above him with his shirt open and Elio is looking at his body when Oliver whips open his belt and falls on top of him. Then the camera pans to the window because there is no justice in this world.

The next time we see them they are naked holding each other and we get the call me by your name moment. They kiss and have sex again.

Next, it’s getting light out and we get a full body shot of their naked legs entwined together, Oliver’s ass and a sideview of Elio’s ass. Elio is very affectionate at this point and sleepily kisses Oliver’s chest.

Later there’s a moment with Oliver cleaning his chest with billowy. He hands it to Elio and he cleans his chest. I don’t know if we’re meant to think it’s sweat or if they came on each other’s chests, like Oliver did in the book. Then Elio asks if he can keep billowy. Bless.

The hotel that was used to film the Rome scenes where Elio and Oliver went for vacation. The hotel is not in Rome but in Bergamo and its called “Hotel Agnello d'Oro”, The producer of the film confirmed that this is the hotel! ( Its just how I imagined it when i was reading the book!)

For those concerned about the age difference in Call Me By Your Name: 

(from someone who has seen the film)

Age is not explicitly stated in the film

however the books have it as 17 and 24

the actors themselves are 21 and 30, and i think their appearance is what has caused people grief and to think the age gap is wider. 

the age of consent in Italy is 14/16. DID YOU HEAR THAT PEOPLE? IN EUROPE. WHERE THIS FILM IS. AGE OF CONSENT IS 16 

There is no power imbalance between the two. Oliver is not in a position of power over Elio (i.e. like a student teacher relationship)

they are equals

consent. reassurance. checking. no one is ever manipulated or uncomfortable. no coercion. 

it is Elio who presses Oliver, not the other way around 

this movie is from the perspective of the 17 year old and his first love. 

if you think the age gap is problematic : please boycott Pretty Little Liars, Riverdale, Blue is the Warmest Colour, Teen Wolf, Diary of a teenage girl

Some of my favourite moments from Call Me by Your Name (the novel). 

1. Elio lying in bed in his “damp” shorts when Oliver asks him to go for a swim. Otherwise known as the thirstiest scene in contemporary literature.  

“When I looked at my crotch, to my complete dismay I saw it was damp. Had he seen it?”

Yes.

2. Oliver calling Elio out on his teen angst and having none of it. For example, when Elio tries to passive-aggressively set him up with Chiara:

“Look it’s very nice of you and I appreciate it but don’t.”

And Oliver’s response to Elio’s desperate, Can’t stand the silence. I need to speak to you, note:

Grow up. I’ll see you at midnight.

It would have been very easy for Aciman to slip into sentimentality here but he maintains a sense of pragmatism in Oliver, which, in contrast with Elio’s longing, gives the relationship its sizzle.  

3. Elio’s nosebleed after the kiss. This epitomizes everything I love about Aciman’s plotting. He writes one of the most romantic kissing scenes in the English language, followed by a breathless description of footsies under the kitchen table. You think, this can only lead to ONE thing, then, surprise bitch, nosebleed!

4. “Fuck me, Elio.”

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

5. “Had we made noise?” 

Bless.

6. Elio cutting Oliver’s egg the morning after Oliver bottoms. This is a tiny moment yet… I could write an opera about it.

7. Elio learning that Oliver wasn’t out sleeping with a different woman every night, but down on the rocky shore alone thinking about him.

“I never knew. I thought—”

“I know what you thought.”

Sweet summer child.

8. Elio’s mom reminding us that Oliver is a stone cold FOX. Grazie Mrs. Perlman.

9. Elio at the end of the book, decades later, unable to meet Oliver’s family because the thirst is STILL too real.

Some of my favourite moments from Call Me by Your Name (the film):

1. Elio sneaking into Oliver’s room to sniff his shorts. He puts the shorts on his head and inhales the crotch like he’s taking his last breath on this earth. You’d think this scene would be played for laughs but Timothée is dead serious. He gets on all fours and sticks his ass in the air and you know exactly what he’s thinking. IT’S SO HOT HELP

2. When Elio and Oliver change into their bathing suits and we see both their asses. Incredible.

3. Dancing to The Psychedelic Furs. Oliver is an 80s god on the dance floor. Just when you think this scene can’t get any better, Elio busts out his own little moves and completely steals the show! Bless.  

4. Elio shaving his non-existent mustache before dinner and then Oliver doesn’t bother to show up! AHAHAHAHAHAHAH

5. Mrs. Perlman saying Vimini’s line about Oliver liking Elio. Nice work, Mrs. P!

6. Elio licking Oliver’s mouth the very first time they kiss. TIMOTHÉE CHALAMET WHAT ARE YOU?

7. When Elio gets the nosebleed Oliver massages his feet to make him feel better. He’s pretty rough so Elio moans (!!!) and grabs his shoulder. Then he starts caressing Oliver’s neck. THEN OLIVER KISSES THE TOP OF ELIO’S FOOT. Play this at my funeral.  

8. Marzia laughing hysterically at Elio when they have sex and he comes too soon. DRAG HIM.

9. André Aciman and Peter Spears’ cameo as the gay couple from Chicago. I want to hug everyone in this scene!  

10. Elio and Oliver kissing before they have sex for the first time. Nothing could have prepared me for this. Elio throws his body at Oliver and climbs him like a fucking tree. OUR SON IS AN ANIMAL

11. When Elio cries during the peach scene and Oliver holds him. The purest thing I will ever know in this life.

12. Winter Elio wears a beret! Why wasn’t I told!?

13. When they speak on the phone during Christmas and Oliver tells him that he’s getting married. Elio calls Oliver by his name over and over until your heart aches, “Elio, Elio, Elio.” Oliver then calls Elio by his name once, “Oliver,” and it destroyed me.
