pairing: joakim karlsson x reader

cw/tags: fluff, sweet domestic tooth-rotting fluff, established relationship, maybe some angst but it lasts 2 seconds, kissing, ~suggestive~ content, 18+ minors do not interact
Jolly wakes up slowly, a groan slipping from his lips as he stretches his limbs out across the bed. He pauses, realizing the spot beside him was unoccupied and cold, and a frown settles on his lips. Blinking, he sits up and stretches out his limbs again with another groan, looking beside him to confirm that yes, the other side of the bed is definitely empty.
He doesn't panic, no, because he sees the bedroom door has been left ajar only slightly, but enough to let him hear you downstairs. It's a distant sound, muffled, but he can hear the clambering and chattering of pans in the kitchen and the faint hum of music. The frown on his lips slips away and a smile replaces it soon after, heart twisting.
He loves mornings like this with you. With their more than hectic schedule now, mornings like this are few and far in-between, so he tries to never take it for granted. Even though he'd much rather drag you back into bed with him and sleep a few more hours, (he flinches at the time on the clock, 7:15), he throws his legs over the side of the bed and pushes himself up. He hisses as his feet meet the cold floor but braves it, shuffling out of your shared bedroom and down the stairs.
The music gets louder the closer he gets to the kitchen and he's not sure what it is, something easy to listen to early in the morning. Some morning indie playlist you found on Spotify, he's sure. He smiles again when he finds you in sweatpants and an old shirt of his, hair pulled back out of your face. Your back is facing him, humming along to whatever song is playing, and he leans against the wall beside him. Jolly doesn't remember the last time he was able to just... admire you from afar. He's always in your space whenever he's home, the both of you wanting to spend as much time with each other as you can, never leaving each other's side.
He likes seeing you like this. As corny as it sounds, this is the most beautiful he thinks you are. Still sleepy he’s sure, still in your pajamas, hair thrown in a messy ponytail, cooking breakfast for the both of you. It's something he'll never get tired of.
After a solid two minutes of silently watching you, he shuffles over to where you stand and doesn't waste time in wrapping his arms around your middle, lips meeting your shoulder.
"Good morning."
"Was waiting for you to come over here." You hum and instantly melt back into his chest. "Were you just watching me in silence?"
"Maybe."
"Creep."
But he can hear the smile in your voice, which makes him smile, and he presses a kiss to the side of your head before untangling himself from you, leaning against the counter to your right.
"What's on the menu this morning?" He questions, eyeing the eggs in the pan.
"Eggs and waffles. Wanted some turkey bacon with it too, but was deeply disappointed to find out that we were out." You send him a pout before focusing back on cooking.
"Oh, you poor thing. How will you ever survive?" He teases before reaching out to poke your side gently, causing you to squeak. "I’ll make sure to add it to our ever growing list. You still want to do that today, right?"
"At some point." You nod before reaching over to turn the stove off and then reaching for one of the waffle filled plates that were placed behind him - two for you, three for him. "We also need to clean this place up before you leave. The living room makes me want to peel my skin off... and don't even get me started on your studio."
He hums, almost in an afterthought, and watches you plate the eggs. "We have time, love."
"I know, I just..." You trail off, continuing to plate the food and he watches as your brows begin to furrow like they always did when you were in thought.
He reaches up and rubs his thumb in between your brows. "Your face will get stuck like that."
"Shut up." You grumble, but your face relaxes for just a moment. "I just like having the place clean before you leave. Makes it feel better when you're gone."
It's his turn to frown, brows furrowing as he stares at you. He knows it rough when he leaves. Leaving you here all alone while he's off traveling with the band isn’t an easy thing to do. If it was his choice, he'd bring you with him every time, but he can't. You have responsibilities here... and unfortunately, his responsibilities are elsewhere most of the time.
He doesn't leave for another three weeks, though, and usually you're asking him to help clean up around the house the week prior. Something is obviously bothering you.
"What's on your mind?"
You sigh, sitting the spatula down on the counter after you finally finished plating. "I just... this time feels different. Don’t you think?”
Jolly cocks and eyebrow up at you. "How so?"
"I don't know." You shrug and come to stand before him, leaning into him and resting your forehead against his shoulder. His arms wrap around you instantly, pulling you closer to him. "You guys are getting bigger, which is amazing. Don't ever think I hate that because I don't, but... the bigger you get means the more tours you get. The more tours you get means..."
You don't say it, voice trailing off, but he knows what your next words will be. The more tours you get means the less time at home. With you. His frown deepens at that.
"Baby..."
"And I don't want to sound selfish. Seriously, I don't! I'm so fucking proud of you, Joakim. All of you. Some of the most deserving people I've ever met, but I..." You sigh again, almost in defeat, and he feels you press closer to him, voice muffled. "I miss you. More than I usually do. It used to be easier, and it still is because I know you'll always come back, but..."
The silence that follows breaks his heart.
He does remember this last time being away in Europe was a little rougher than normal, constantly thinking about you, wishing you were there with him. It might be because last time they were there you were with him, taking leave from work to join him on their European headliner for this new album. The only thing that really got him through was the fact he knew that when he got home, you'd be right there waiting for him.
"But?"
"But... it just sucks." You pull back just enough to look up at him, a sad smile settling on your lips. "Wish I could just go with you and not worry about anything else.”
"You could," He's quick to respond. "You've always had that option."
"I know." You mumble, face pressing back against his shoulder. "I feel bad, though. Making you support the both of us. Plus, you know how much I hate flying. I couldn't stand it."
Jolly laughs at the tiny groan you let out, probably remembering your flight last year to the UK with him and the rest of the band. You had begged Matt to switch seats with you, so he could be by the window and you in the aisle with Jolly squished between you two. One look out the window - while you were still on the ground - had sent you in a spiral. He remembers having to hold your hand the entire flight, and when it was allowed, lifting up the armrest so you could press yourself into his side. He hadn't minded it one bit, finding it endearing that you put all your trust in him to keep you safe.
"You and flying don't mix well." He teases, hands now rubbing up and down your arms. "But... you know I don't mind providing for you."
"I know you don't."
"And I love taking care of you."
"I know you do." You whine, pulling back again to pout up at him. "But you know I can't let you do that. My brain tells me no."
"Tell your brain to get over it and let your boyfriend take care of you." He leans forward, planting a kiss to the center of your forehead. He feels your arms circle around his middle and he smiles against your skin.
"If only it were that easy." He pulls back to find you still staring at him, but a smile has since replaced the pout on your lips. "This'll only suck for a little bit, then it'll become our new norm and it'll get easier. I'm just cranky about it now, but I know we'll figure it out."
"We always figure it out." He hums. "Just tell me what you need from me to make it easier on you while I'm away, and I'll do it."
"There's nothing you can do.” You pause. “Except, maybe, right now… a kiss could possibly fix my cranky mood."
He watches your gaze drop from his down to his lips, and then back up, your own lips puckering dramatically. Jolly huffs out a laugh before happily obliging and leans down, lips pressing against yours gently. Nothing too crazy, a sweet peck, because he still hasn't brushed his teeth, and he pulls back seconds later.
"I love you." You say happily, eyes fluttering shut briefly.
"I love you, too, baby."
"Alright, I’m not allowed to complain for the rest of the day. Let's eat before all my hardwork gets cold." You step on your tip-toes to press a kiss to his cheek before pulling away entirely, reaching around him for both of your plates. "And maybe after, shower? Then go grocery shopping? The fridge is running on fumes... I think I used the last of the eggs and we have maybe half a glass of milk left."
He perks up at that, following you over to the chairs that sit at the island in the middle of the kitchen, plucking his plate from your hands before settling down in his chair. "A shower, you say?"
"Of course that's the only thing you heard." You deadpan, but he doesn't miss the smirk on your lips.
"Sorry. You know my brain likes to focus on the important stuff."
"Perv." You tease, but the smirk has finally settled on your lips fully. "Does that sound good, though?"
"Mhm. Sounds good to me, love."
"Oh! And maybe later we could go to the thrift store we wanted to check out last week? Hit up some other shops, too."
"Oooh, yes. That sounds like a perfect plan.”
It's almost as if the worry from earlier is forgotten as your conversation continues through breakfast, and when you're finished putting your dirty dishes away and dragging him up the stairs to go shower (among other things), Jolly knows that the two of you will eventually figure it out. He knows you two can weather any storm, just like you have for the last few years, and that these worries won't mean much to the two of you in the future. He knows wherever he goes, you’ll be right there waiting for him, and he hopes you know he’d do the same for you.

This story is going to put my emotions in danger and I’m so excited 🥹
Never Just Friends: OBX - Day 1
Tumblr media
Pairing: Nick Folio x OFC, Matt Dierkes x OFC, Nick Folio x OFC x Matt Dierkes
Summary: Invited to come along on a trip to the Outer Banks for eight days with the guys, Kelsey soon found that her close friendship with Nick Folio might be more than she realized. Dancing around what one would argue was the inevitable for years, it might’ve been easy for them to venture into that uncharted territory if it wasn’t for Matt Dierkes. To him, this was his one chance to step out from the sidelines and confess his true feelings, and he was determined to take it. Things evolved faster than all three could’ve anticipated, and they soon found themselves in the riptide of an unexpected love triangle.
Word Count: 3.4k
A/N: This has been so much fun to put together. I’m excited to share the first installment, and I plan (loosely) to post each one on Friday. Hope y’all enjoy this series. Feedback is always appreciated
Special shoutout to @the-way-of-words for all the brainstorming and support while I write this.

“This can’t be right,” Kelsey mumbled as she double-checked her phone’s GPS. Her foot planted on the brakes, she hesitated, looking around to see if there were any cars she recognized. After a heavy sigh to reassure herself, she pulled the beater Ford Focus into the driveway.
The house was simply massive. There before her, looking out into the ocean, it stood at an impressive three floors high, painted a beautiful cornflower blue with pristine white shutters. This was her first time visiting the Outer Banks, and she had come to find out that a house like this was a dime a dozen here.
Still, she felt like she had the wrong address. This was a lifestyle she could never afford, something she would only imagine after seeing pictures and videos of a place like this. These were ocean-front properties, perched on the highly desired shoreline like a throne — mere summer homes for the wealthy and affluent.
“How the fuck did they score this place for a week?” She asked herself, creeping her vehicle along the pavement. This was way above her tax bracket as a bartender, making her feel as though she was a lone stray they happened to take in.
She parked behind one of the other cars and cut the engine to take in the scenery around her. The salty sea air flowing through her open windows, the distant cries of seagulls, the afternoon sun already tanning her bare arms, to the view she was going to have for the next eight days.
“What took you so fucking long?!” A male voice popped out of nowhere.
“Fuck!” She shrieked, nearly jumping out of her seat. She recognized the voice of her close friend, quickly opening her eyes to see the man erupting into giggles. She smacked his arm that was draped over her open window. “What the hell, Folio?!”
“Ow! Good to see you, too. Damn.” He chuckled, rubbing his arm dramatically.
Nick Folio had known Kelsey since his sophomore year of high school. She was the best friend of a girl he once dated, but like most teenage romances, it quickly fizzled out after a few months. They had been acquaintances, but it wasn’t until the following year they became closer, forming a friendship of their own.
They had periods where they grew closer and would drift apart depending on what was going on in their lives. Relationships came and went for both of them, some more serious than others. School and work consumed her for months at a time. Life got hectic, especially for Nick with the growth of the band. Despite the odds, they stayed in touch. She would visit him when she could, seeing shows around the country over the years. And every time, he would somehow find ways to secure her a backstage pass.
“Yeah, yeah,” she scoffed, rolling her eyes at him. Once she got a good look at him, she saw that he was dressed in one of his Harley Davidson shirts and a pair of swimming trunks. She cursed at him internally that he was already getting the glow of summer on his skin.
”You’re late.” He clipped the last words against his teeth in disapproval.
She snorted, “Some of us have real jobs, Nicholas.”
His head bobbled with the words, throwing her attitude right back at her. ”I think saying a bartender is a real job is a bit of a stretch, Kelsey.”
”You’re such a dick,” she said with a breathy laugh. “Lemme out of here,” she huffed, pushing the car door open to nudge him away. Once she stood to her aching feet, he pulled her in for a hug.
Through all their teasing, Nick never grew tired of being around her. He would hate to admit it out of fear of being teased by the guys, but he’d been excited for her arrival. He would shrug off that feeling, but just as he predicted, she was breathtaking, becoming more beautiful each time he saw her.
Truly, deep down he accepted that she was simply out of his league and that it was better for them to just be friends— and he loved her as such. However, their friendship didn’t take away from the fact he was still attracted to her.
He squeezed her tighter than he should, catching the sweet scent of her strawberry shampoo from her hair. Kelsey relaxed into him and wrapped her hands around his back. She held on for a few extra seconds, soaking up his warmth and the weight of arms on her shoulders. His presence put her at ease, melting away any anxiety she had felt on the drive down. It had been months since they’d seen each other, but it always amazed her how well they seemed to pick right back up where they left off.
She was the one to pull away, and over his shoulder, she spotted his motorcycle between the parked cars. “You rode the bike down?”
He flashed a mischievous grin, the one that made his nose scrunch up in that way she loved. “Hell yeah! I even ordered another helmet so you can ride with me this time.”
Her eyes widened in fear and she pushed her hand against his chest, stumbling back from him. “You didn’t.”
”I did and I’m gonna get you on there, Kels,” he stated confidently, walking toward the trunk of her car. “It’s going to happen this time.”
She leaned in the open window and popped the lever on the inside of the door, letting him grab her bag, huffing, “You’re fucking crazy, Folio.”
He laughed, shaking his head as he shut the trunk and slung her bag over his shoulder. “It’s really not as scary as you’re making it out to be.”
”No, you’re right.” She rolled her eyes to add to the sarcasm and started making her way to the house. “It’s only hanging on for dear life on the back of a motorcycle. I’m totally overreacting.”
He stepped in front of her and spun to face her, walking backward. He pouted his lip and gave her his best set of puppy eyes. “Don’t you trust your dear ol’ friend?”
”I’ve learned that it’s the dearest of friends that get me in the most trouble.”
Tumblr media
“Is Kelsey gluten-free?” Matt asked, staring blankly at the shelves of bread in front of him. “I can’t remember...”
Noah had been scrolling away on his phone, mindlessly pushing the shopping cart behind his friend throughout the store. He shrugged, mumbling, “I dunno.” Matt pushed out an irritated sigh, making Noah peel his eyes away from his screen. Matt was tenser than ever, scrolling up and down the grocery list he had made in his notes app. “I think you’re stressing yourself out, man.”
“I’m not stressed,” Matt grumbled under his breath, tossing a pack of hamburger buns into the cart without bothering to look where they ended up.
Noah eyed him closely, moving the delicate bread to a safer spot as the cart filled up. “You’ve been on edge since we got here. We’re on vacation, remember? Loosen the manager reins a little, yeah?”
“Can you just find out, please?!” He snapped back, shooting Noah an icy glare.
“Okay, okay.” Noah threw his hands up defensively, knowing better than to test Matt’s patience when he was in a mood like this. Matt could have just as easily messaged her himself, having her number in the group chat for this trip.
”Thank you.” Matt gave him an apologetic look, pulling the cart along.
Noah found Kelsey’s name in his contacts and started typing out the text. After sending it, he locked his phone, pushing the cart along by his elbows. He empathized with Matt’s current state, knowing the reason why he was acting this way.  ”So…are you planning on ever making a move on her?”
Matt scoffed, but instead of denying it, he responded with, “I don’t think she’s into me like that.”
“You don’t know that,” Noah said flatly. He could agree that Kelsey was a gorgeous girl, but he’s also seen his friend be with beautiful women over the years.
Matt shifted on his feet, showing a vulnerable side of himself to Noah. It was unlike him to have someone make his confidence falter like she had. ”Oh, come on, what about her and Folio?”
Noah knew where the conversation was going, but he played along anyway. ”And what about them?”
”Have you seen them together? They’re practically attached at the fucking hip,” Matt said with a dry laugh and a heavy roll of his eyes, using the humor of it as a sheild.
”I have.” Noah wasn’t buying into Matt’s moment of self-doubt, but he couldn’t say he was wrong either. It was no secret amongst them that Folio and Kelsey flirted along the boundary of ‘just friends’ for a while now.
They had a little standoff in the middle of the bread aisle, giving each other a look that would level anyone else. They stared in silence for a few seconds before Matt threw his hands up, defeated. “Well, all I’m saying is that they should just fuck and be together already.”
“And I’m saying is that they aren’t…at least that I know of,” Noah explained as if he was suddenly the voice of reason, adding, “And you know how Folio is. That dude can’t keep a secret to save his life.”
”I don’t know...”
“You and I both know that he’s been fumbling Kelsey for almost ten fucking years. And don’t forget they’ve been seeing other people all this time. I’m just trying to tell you it’s now or never, dude.”
Noah watched the gears turning in Matt’s head. He had a point, but Matt also knew the reason why Kelsey’s and Folio’s past relationships never worked out in the long run. No girl Nick dated trusted him around Kelsey despite how cool they tried to seem to be with it, and he didn’t blame them. As for Kelsey, he saw the men she brought around — all of them revealing their insecurity when it came to Nick Folio in her life. Another thing he somewhat understood. Just friends are not, there was an undeniable bond and chemistry between them, one that he, himself, felt he couldn’t break through. “This sounds like a terrible idea.”
Throwing caution to the wind, Noah asked, ”What could go wrong?”
”What could go wrong?!” Matt scoffed, planting himself back to reality. He walked toward the end of the aisle, sending his next words over his shoulder. “A lot of things... everything. It could ruin our entire trip for fuck’s sake.”
Noah groaned, but followed him anyway, “I don’t know, man. Do whatever the hell you want, but just cut it out with the fucking pining. You’re grossing me the hell out.”
Matt halted abruptly, and if Noah hadn’t stopped in time, the cart would’ve clipped the back of his heels. He struck a nerve being the only one that Matt could trust with this. He whipped around and wrapped his hands around the basket of the cart, and to anyone passing by, it looked as though they were bickering like an old married couple. “Just because you’re going solo bachelor this time doesn’t give you the right to be a dickhead.”
Despite understanding the source of his close friend’s agitation, he was one of the few who could give it right back to him. Noah spits back, keeping his voice low, “Being obsessed with her doesn’t give you the right to be an asshole either.”
His eyes narrowed as he bit back his next words on his tongue, but he decided to drop it. Even though he could shed the frustration, Noah’s accusation would fester in the back of his mind for days. He wasn’t obsessed with Kelsey, he was just into her. It was a dumb little crush on a hot girl they hung out with —one that he was sure he would get over soon enough.  “Has she responded yet?”
Noah checked his phone and frowned. “No, but she’s probably still driving though.”
“Fuck it. I’ll just get some anyway.” Matt huffed, throwing a loaf of gluten-free bread from the shelf into the cart.
Tumblr media
While Matt worked on putting the last bag of groceries away in the kitchen, Nick ushered Kelsey inside the house. The second he heard her voice, his heart collapsed into the pit of his stomach.
Her laugh carried up the stairs, echoing throughout the second floor. He saw Folio first, and then her trailing behind. She lit up, waving to both him and Noah as she greeted them, “Hey guys!”
“Hey,” they responded in unison.
Matt had come to find that Kelsey held her own, matching Folio’s charming personality —kind to those around her, but a spitfire when it mattered. She wasn’t afraid to laugh the loudest, to be the center of the room. To him, she was the room where no one else mattered, and it scared him, to be drawn to her this much like a moth to a flame. So cliche he thought. But unlike the others, he saw when she was that quiet wallflower — moments where she sat back to take it all in.
He watched her stroll into the kitchen bursting with energy. She looked beautiful, somehow more than the last time he saw her. Her raven-black hair was a few inches longer, draping down her shoulders in loose waves and pulled back from her face with the pair of Raybans perched on her head. Her cheeks were already sun-kissed and her effortless smile beamed at them both as she greeted Noah with a friendly hug.
Before he knew it, she was standing before him, asking, “Didn’t bring the dogs?”
He blanked, lost in the swells of her blue-gray eyes. After swallowing thickly, he answered with a nervous laugh, “Not this time. They’re with a friend of mine for the week.”
“Aww. I was looking forward to seeing them,” she pouted, before pulling her lips back into her usual smile. “How are you though?”
Before he could say another word, she opened her arms for a hug and stepped forward. He stumbled through it, catching her in an awkward side embrace instead. Her hand brushed his bare skin along his side that was exposed through his cut-off tee and it made his heart race. He wanted her to let it rest there for longer, but his pat on her shoulder caused her to pull away.
”I’m good.” Matt struggled with small talk, especially for her. He cleared his throat, and changed the subject, gesturing to Noah with an open hand. “We just got back from a grocery run a few minutes ago.”
”Oh fuck!” She gasped, a look of worry painting across her face, reaching into her purse. “Let me know what to chip in for food.”
Matt was quick to wave her off. “Don’t worry about that. We only picked up the basics.”
Noah added, “He got a bunch of stuff to cook burgers on the grill tonight.”
“Oh, hell yeah, I love burgers on the grill,” she said excitedly with a soft groan. It was a sound that made Matt’s thoughts wander as much as his eyes. They drifted down her layered necklaces, lingering on the snake tattoo wrapping around the curve of her right collarbone, eventually following the low hemline of her tank top. He couldn’t help but notice the light sheen of sweat on the soft curves of her tits. Matt snapped himself back before she looked back at him. “And the house is fucking awesome by the way.”
He took the compliment, believing that it was praise solely for him. All he did was search online for rentals that met their accommodations, and once a place was agreed on, had the group chip in their portion for booking. “Thanks. It was great that everyone went in on it. Everyone’s schedules are so fucked when we’re off tour, ya know?”
Matt had turned away to toss bags of chips into the cabinet, missing Kelsey’s confused expression.
Folio having a sense of where the conversation would end up, cut in, “Wanna check out your room?”
“Yeah, sure,” she responded, pausing with hesitation before reaching out and brushing Matt’s arm. “We’ll have to catch up later, yeah?”
“That’d be sick,” he called out as she already started to walk away. She gave him a weak smile before following Folio to her room upstairs.
Once they were out of earshot, Noah blew out a laugh through his nose as if he had been holding it the entire time. “Smooth.”
“Shut the fuck up.” Matt was cringing at himself. It was the first time he’d seen her in months, and he was already screwing up a simple conversation.
Noah popped another pretzel into his mouth. “Should’ve brought the dogs.”
“If you don’t stop, I swear I’m gonna drag you out there and drown you in the ocean myself.”
Tumblr media
Kelsey plopped on the edge of the bed as Nick swung her bag off his shoulder to lay it beside her feet. He straightened and took in the room for himself, blowing out a heavy sigh, “So…whaddya’ think?”
She looked around the bedroom, nodding while noticing that the owners stayed true to the beach theme with all the nautical decor covering the walls. ”It’s really nice.”
“The one I’m in is right next to yours,” he explained, walking over to the window to point out to the ocean. “The view is fucking sick too.”
“It is,” she hummed softly, wanting to simply enjoy this like him without a second thought, but what Matt had said weighed on her mind regardless of Nick’s attempt to distract her. The reality of it all was settling now that she was here, sitting in front of him. She picked at the loose threads of her denim shorts anxiously, asking, “So why’d you invite me?”
He laughed at first, thinking that she was messing with him, “What do you mean?”
For a fleeting moment, she felt out of place. She wasn't in the band, nor was she part of the crew. ”I guess I’m wondering why you didn’t bring one of your guy friends down here? What about Kooter?”
He snorted at the thought, “Well, for one, you’re way hotter in a bathing suit.”
She didn’t laugh at his joke, but her voice dropped, changing to low and stern — a stark contrast from her usual bubbliness, ”Nick, I’m serious.”
He finally pulled away from the window to look at her, realizing that the energy suddenly shifted between them as if all the excitement she felt popped like a balloon.
“I dunno, Kels.” He scratched the back of his neck, thinking of what to tell her. “…because I wanted you to come down.” It was a simple answer, but it’s the honest truth. From when the idea was first pitched to the guys, he only had her in mind. It just felt so vulnerable once he said it aloud to her. He couldn’t look at her reaction, causing a nervous laugh to break free, “Shit. You had even said so yourself that you’ve always wanted to check out the Outer Banks. And I was thinking it was gonna be different than what we have back home.” Nick knew he was rambling, so he shifted his weight on his feet, turning to pick up an anchor figurine from the top of the dresser. Worrying that he had disappointed her somehow, he asked, “Why? You not happy you came?”
“I am happy,” she assured, but her voice didn’t match the words. Something was still bothering her, and her shoulders fell with the massive sigh she let out. “Why didn’t you tell me about chipping in?”
His breath suddenly caught in his throat, “Didn’t tell you what?”
“Did you pay for me?”
Nick didn’t anticipate her confronting him about it like this when he made the decision weeks ago. He took a long pause, drumming along on the edge of the wooden dresser with his index fingers before admitting, “I mean…yeah…”
“Damn it, Nick. I can pay for myself,” she scoffed. He could see that she was frustrated. While they rarely fought, she wasn’t shy to tell him how she felt. The last thing she wanted was a handout —  to feel like a burden now that she was staying here under different pretenses than the rest of them. “Now I really feel like a charity case, dude.”
“Stop it, Kelsey.” He felt guilty, thinking he ruined the trip before it had a chance to even start. “You’re not a charity case. I didn’t pay for you as some weird thing or out of pity.” His voice cracked slightly, fearing he crossed an unknown boundary within their friendship. This was uncomfortable for him to talk about, and his constant fidgeting with the random decorations sitting on the dresser showed it. “I know you’ve been through some shit lately. I guess I just…I just wanted you to come down and not stress about having to give Matt money or some shit.”
She could’ve stayed angry at him, or even embarrassed, but her heart warmed at the thought of his gesture. She believed him and knew that Nick meant well, watching out for her when most friends would look the other way when she needed a helping hand. She didn’t tell him much about her somewhat recent break-up with her ex-boyfriend, Justin, when they texted. The only thing he had really gotten from her vague responses was that they left things on bad terms and her hinting that she had been picking up the pieces of her life for the last few months. “Are you gonna let me pay you back?”
”Nope.” He made the word pop on his lips, causing that grin of his to return. “Just chip in for alcohol or whatever if you want.”
She rolled her eyes at him, but laughed, “You fucking asshole.”
He wanted to join her, but he pulled his brows together and pointed a finger at her as if to scold her. “I’m serious though. It’s not a big deal so stop making it one.”
She leaned back on the bed and let a small smile curl the corners of her lips. As quickly as the mood changed when they stepped into the room, things were right back to how they always were between them. “Fine, but you gotta stop making it seem like I’m scared of Matt. He’s just a little…intense.”
He blew an airy laugh through his nose, “Alright, but I don’t understand why you think he hates you.”
“It’s not that I think he hates me…I just don’t think he likes me very much,” she said with a laugh.
He closed the distance between them and sat down on the bed beside her. While he might’ve disagreed, he really couldn’t deny that his friend wasn’t the warmest and fuzziest person to be around. He tipped his head to the side, admitting, “Matt is…Matt.” Another thought popped into his head, and he giggled before the words could even leave his mouth, “Maybe he’s got a crush on you or something.”
She shoved his arm with enough force that he almost fell off the mattress. “No, he does not!”

Nick was restless, tossing and turning on the unfamiliar mattress for nearly an hour. Sleeping in strange beds wasn’t new, and yet, he couldn’t shut off his brain and quiet the thoughts in his head. The rest of the evening went well with everyone settling in. Weed always took the edge off, and he thought the few beers he had after dinner would’ve helped lull him asleep. They didn’t tonight.
He flipped onto his back and slipped his hand beneath his boxers to cup his soft cock in his hand for comfort. He lay there in the dark for a while, eventually deciding that the release might help his sleeplessness.
Once he gave into the impulse, he felt himself grow within seconds, hardening in his own grasp with the steady beat of his heart. He freed himself from his boxers but didn’t think about anything at first other than the feeling of gently stroking himself. He spit into his hand and rolled his wet palm over the head of his cock.
Nick’s brain must’ve been stuck reliving the day because the image of Kelsey flashed in his mind. He remembered the perfect soft, round curve of her ass in her bikini from earlier in the night when they smoked a joint on the deck together. He’d feel guilty to admit it, but he watched her walk away too many times, eyes fixed on how it bounced with her steps. With the slick glide of his fingers up and down his shaft, he let himself indulge in the fantasy. He imagined how it would feel to run his hands over it, to see it move if he fucked her from behind — pictured how her pussy would look gripping his cock.
She would be so fucking tight and warm, he thought, squeezing himself and pretending that it was her instead. The rhythm of his strokes picked up, and he could feel his orgasm start to build rapidly. He spit in his hand again fantasizing how wet she would be taking his cock, how he would glide so easily inside her.
He pumped his fist over himself thinking about how she might arch her back and bury her face in the pillow to muffle her moans. He wondered how her silken, black hair would feel wrapped within his fingers. There was nothing slow or gentle about his movements. He wasn’t edging himself tonight, he was rushing right to the finish line.
He pushed himself to the tipping point, wanting to leave her fucked out and breathless so she cried his name when she came around him. His imagination was so powerful he could’ve sworn he heard his name in her voice.
“Nick.”
It was all too much. With his head thrown back into his pillow and eyes clamped shut, he completely let go. Through a louder groan than he thought, he came harder than he had in months, spilling warm cum onto his hand until he slowed his strokes to a stop.
”Uhm…Nick?” A soft voice broke the silence.
Startled and scared shitless, he jolted up and gasped, “Oh, fuck!”
In the darkness with only a small night light illuminating the room, he saw someone standing in the doorway. He scrambled to throw the blanket over himself, hoping to God they didn’t see anything.
“…Kelsey?” He asked breathlessly as his eyes started to focus.
Unsure of what she should do and riddled with new-found anxiety, she hesitated for a few seconds before finally whispering, “Yeah, I’m sorry... I thought you were awake. I-I did knock…but uh…I actually came over to ask if I could borrow your phone charger for the night. I think I left mine in my car.”
Dazed and embarrassed, he blanked, “Uh...”
“Ya’ know what? Don’t worry about it. I can get mine…“
“No! No, it’s okay. You can borrow mine,” he insisted. “It’s plugged in the wall right over here.” She waited, perhaps thinking he would grab it and hand it to her, but he didn’t move an inch. “It’s by the nightstand.”
“Oh, sorry.” She stepped forward realizing she was the one that was supposed to get it. Tension was thicker than ever between them as she reached to unplug the charger behind the little beside table. She wouldn’t even look at him, and he couldn’t do anything but lay there guilty and sticky in his own cum.
“Must’ve been sleep-talking again,” Nick blurted out in an attempt to save face. He knew deep down she wouldn’t believe that excuse, because there was no way in hell she didn’t know what he was doing. His face was flushed so hot with shame he felt like he might puke right then.
He wanted to die.
“Yeah…I think I do that, too, sometimes,” she laughed awkwardly, shuffling to the door in a rush. “Thanks for the charger. Night.”
“Goodnight, Kels,” Nick said back, but she was already gone. He heard the soft click of her bedrooom door and collapsed back into his pillow, cursing at himself, “You fucking dumbass.”
