This chapter has some Fujian specialty foods. The stuffed taro buns (芋子包) are a steamed thing filled with a cooked mixed filling of meat, bamboo shoots and maybe some other stuff. The taro part is in the wrapping/dough - mashed taro is mixed in with tapioca starch and stuff, according to a recipe I found online. Noodles with meat and offal (柴火面) I mostly found sources from a TV show so I suspect XL saw that and thought it sounded good. It does sound very good.

That cat slinked into the kitchen, stopped under Menyouping, and leapt onto the stove in one jump to stare at his bowl. We had lots of smoked fish hanging above our stove, so I went over to shoo the cat down. The cat hissed at me.

I crouched down to mimic it, and scared it off.

Fun fact: The original term used for the Zhang clansmen visiting him part is 省亲, which describes married women visiting their family in ye olden times. You know, the kind of thing where you needed approval from your husband, and only got to do it maybe once every couple of years? Obviously doesn’t apply here; I think it was used more for the old-timey traditional Zhang clan vibe.

You may notice I use clan/clan head for the Zhang clan. I just think that’s more accurate in context.
