Hello detectives! 🔎
Do you love:
Mystery fiction, especially paired with a comedic tone, like Knives Out, Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, or Only Murders in the Building?
Sherlock & Co, and want another, different take on the Holmes canon to add to your rotation of shows?
Irreverent historical comedies with surprising heart and messages about the people who often get left in the margins of history like Operation Mincemeat and Our Flag Means Death?
Re: Dracula, and other audio dramas that present unique takes on classic literature?
British audio comedy like Wooden Overcoats, Cabin Pressure, and Bleak Expectations?
The original ACD Sherlock Holmes stories but wish there was explicit, textual representation of gay, lesbian, and ace identities that are celebrated and centered within the actual text?
Adorable senior cat mascots?
May we present ourselves, Fawx & Stallion, a mystery-comedy podcast about the best detective team on Baker Street! (Not that one.) Our full first season is available now, and we are currently crowdfunding for Season 2! If a queer, Victorian mystery-comedy set in the world of Sherlock Holmes sounds like it might be up your alley, please consider giving us a listen, and if you're able, supporting our crowdfund so that our indie team can bring another mystery to life!

i genuinely feel like joan watson in elementary, as played by lucy liu, is like the best way to adapt a character and honor their spirit while changing some aspect of them (gender, ethnicity, etc).
because joan isn't just some parody of sherlock, or a parody of a man. she's a fully fleshed out character, with a brother and mother and step-father and father. she has a family, she has exes and old friends and two past careers. she is a character that blends and incorporates the original material while still being something innovative.
she is a doctor, she holds guilt over her lost patient. she becomes a sober companion afterwards, which she finds fufilling. and then she becomes sherlock's sober companion, and the story moves on from there. and as a chinese american, i LOVE how they elaborated on how joan was a fierce academic, how joan was ruthless. some of the steryotypes are based in truth, and this is how to acknowledge that: by having an actual chinese person embody and ground the truth behind the steryotype.
she has conversations with her family and about her family that i can literally hear from my own. she casually eats food with chopsticks and forks, she speaks mandarin but also likes baseball, she's a nerd about comics and followed gangsters growing up. she's knowledgable about chinese history and culture, but to a realistic amount, she's not treated as a professor on the subject.
she's beautifully, wonderfully adapted and i really love how lucy liu made her come to life.

rewatching elementary now with the knowledge Jonny Lee Miller had started with his own sobriety and recovery whilst filming is honestly transcendent. He is so GOOD. he is gut-wrenching. The scene where Sherlock explains his sobriety feels like a leaking faucet that requires constant maintenance and offers only not to drip in return - jlm does this thing with his voice where he's on the verge of tears but bored all at once. He's wrecked by a feeling he's utterly sick to death of having. It's such a compassionate performance. On another level it is truly crazy to me that we have so many Sherlock Holmes adaptations so eager to make Sherlock an addict, but Elementary is far and away the only adaptation that does that and takes the addiction seriously. Perhaps in part because of JLM's real life recovery, but we'll never know. On a rewatch, it's a lot :')

It’s been ages since the last time I painted my beloved Jeremy Brett and what reason for painting him again is better than Sherlock Holmes birthday? :)

Sherlock Holmes modern adaptation but the main characters (Sherlock, Watson, Mrs. Hudson, Irene Adler, and maybe even Lestrade) are all vampires and they’ve just been doing their thing since the time period of the original books
Irene gets to be from New Jersey like she is in canon and she’ll occasionally show up and help Sherlock with a case but they don’t ever date or hook up or anything

fucking sucks ass that detective is a subtype of cop or always some type of law enforcement. a detective should be someone who is a master of disguise, a weirdo, socially maligned, and hated by the police. he should solve the cases using his ultra specific knowledge about geography, linguistics, human biology, and cigar ashes

anyway the actual point of fandom is to inspire each other. reading each other's fics and admiring each other's art and saying wow i love this and i feel something and i want to invoke this in other people, i want to write a sentence that feels like a meteor shower, i want to paint a kiss with such tenderness it makes you ache, i want to create something that someone else somewhere will see it and think oh, i need to do that too, right now. i am embracing being a corny cunt on main to say inspiring each other is one of the things humanity is best at and one of the things fandom is built for and i think that's beautiful
