The Grove & The Ditch - Vinny Peculiar
Tumblr media
https://vinnypeculiar.bandcamp.com/album/return-of-the-native
‘The missing link between Jarvis Cocker and Roger McGough’ Irish Times
UK-based singer-songwriter Vinny Peculiar, aka Alan Wilkes, has been described by Uncut Magazine as ‘an under-sung national treasure’. He grew up in Worcestershire and trained as a nurse before signing to Manchester cult label, Ugly Man Records (former home to Elbow).
He has since put out twelve albums of literate autobiographical pop music over a twenty-year career and toured with various bandmates including ex-members of The Smiths, OASIS, The Fall and Aztec Camera.
In the early 1970s, an inspired North Bromsgrove teacher encouraged Wilkes’ talent and desire to be a professional musician. That teacher was MOR pop singer Clifford T Ward who went on to sell a million copies of the single Gaye and was signed to John Peel’s Dandelion Records. Vinny pays tribute to him on the new album in the gently poignant Singing Schoolteacher.
Glam-rock-inspired opener The Grove & The Ditch is all local gang rivalries and Rocky Horror misfits. There’s also an effervescently-jangling homage to Malvern Winter Gardens, home to many a classic rock show of Vinny’s youth. Then poignant finale, Game Over, charting the end of a relationship.
Stuffed full of Peculiar’s trademark lyrical poignancy and absurdity, Return of the Native might be the folk-pop record that Pulp never made - a warped storyteller’s record that will resonate with fans of Ray Davies, Eels and Robyn Hitchcock. Vinny Peculiar writes of transition, readjustment and re- engagement. He says, ‘it’s about the past and the present and how they collude and collide in the imagination.’
‘Part-Pulp, part-Kinks, and very much part-Peculiar, this is observational, punk-tinged song-writing at its best’ Hot Press ****

Return of the Native
View this email in your browser Hello everyone, here's an update on the new album, gigs & video... The new Vinny Peculiar album 'Return of the Native' comes out 1st June 2018, a Worcestershire themed record inspired by my return to the midlands. It started life in Ellesmere Port with regular VP musicians Paul Tsanos [drums], Bobby Kewley [Bass. Cello] Rob Steadman [Keys] & Leah Walch [b/vocals]. After further recording/editing in my home studio the record was completed at Unit 31 in Pershore with Dave Draper & I producing. Its a noisy band affair, muscular and glam rockish in parts, jangling and anthemic, I'm really pleased with the way its turned out and excited to be sharing the news with you. 'Return of the Native' is available to pre order on CD through the VP site or via Bandcamp [where you can also stream/preview tracks] and through any number of digital music providers including iTunes and Amazon. I'm planning on pressing Vinyl copies later in the year, do let me know if this is something that you'd be interested in so I can gauge demand. Video update... 'The 'Malvern Winter Gardener' video, shot by Andy Squiff, is here now. Further videos for 'Game Over' and 'The Grove & The Ditch' are in the pipeline so please do look out for them on social media and share with friends. Rob Steadman and I are playing a few gigs over the summer in support of the record, new songs, old songs, any requests do email me and we'll do our best to oblige.
