fall 2016 couture shows (pt. 1)
altelier versace鈥檚 fall 2016 couture show had moments that left me blissful and moments that left me bored and exasperated.
there鈥檚 an extent to which versace has ALWAYS been a little bit tacky, a little loud, a little bit much, a way in which it is a little too on the nose. there鈥檚 a specific sort of girl one thinks of when one sees the houses鈥檚 fashions. she鈥檚 probably loud and outspoken, crass, maybe vulgar. impeccably put together but she鈥檚 a mess. she favors bold gold jewelry and short skirts, probably. isn鈥檛 afraid of accessorizing with chains.聽
but even at its most underwhelming it has never felt as old as it does today.
jackets and draping and coats, oh my!聽
donatella versace has said that with this collection she intentionally eschewed her traditional flare for embroidery and embellishments in her couture work, opting instead to exploit draping technique, hopefully to maximum effect. the collection is full of flowing oversize coats, skirts with flowing trains, ruched satin swirling all over the place. ironically, its the more embroidered, toned down pieces that please the eye. most of the looks look聽like something kane from project runway might have created.

look, i鈥檓 all about odd proportions and unexpected color palettes, but this is a look a for someone who has to go outside because they left their phone in their car but they鈥檝e already gotten ready for bed.
(the shoes are dope however.)

i hate everything about this look. i know it鈥檚 a thing but i鈥檝e never seen a train on a short skirt that didn鈥檛 make me want to vomit in my hands and then rub the vomit in my eyes just so i wouldn鈥檛 have to look at the skirt with the train. it鈥檚 stupid. it smacks of indecisiveness and poorly channeled moxie. also there鈥檚 something about that gold and that lavender that doesn鈥檛 work for me. as michael kors would say, it鈥檚 a little mother of the bride.聽

this ALMOST comes together for me. while i can鈥檛 suffer a short skirt with a train, i can and happily will take a pantsuit with a train. and this train is particularly magnificent. the look comes so close to looking completely chic and sexy, a little hard and a little soft, but the color doesn鈥檛 move me in this silhouette (except the lining of the train -- my GAWD) and there鈥檚 too much going on in the bust area. i also think the sort of seashell thing cover her right breast is wrong because it only emphasizes the association i make between that color and seaside-inspired bathroom decor.聽

this was lovely, particularly the right shoulder work. structured but flowy, well-balanced. the black is perhaps a bit too serious, too mother of the night?

this i loved. there鈥檚 a lot going on but somehow it鈥檚 just enough. that pop of red on the belt slays and purple beading takes me places.聽

ditto this. the blue is a shade or two too light for the red i think but maybe the pink in the show balances that out? idk. but i do know the cut of the gown is to die for. the cut out is sooooo hot and dramatic, but somehow she retains this covered up feeling.聽

then there鈥檚 this. are we supposed to take this seriously? girl what car wash did you stumble through? the whole thing looks heavy and damp. also tell me the black visible from the ruching in the crotch area doesn鈥檛 look like pubic hair.聽

this was my absolutely favorite thing. in fact i want it. like in a perfect world donatella would send it to me in the mail and it would arrive just in time for fall. it鈥檚 like dorothy zbornak ate both of the olsen twins and then got drunk with rachel zoe.聽
