#waybackwednesday
Video: This one’s from the archives (2012) while shooting for Rangbhoomi in Benaras, one of the busiest, holiest cities of India. The entire video is from one long cycle rickshaw ride, dodging cows and traffic. In some sense the unsteady handheld footage went well with Nucleya’s then bass heavy music that referenced a lot of street sounds. I remember being fascinated by almost every passing moment- the traffic being a befitting metaphor for the ‘jungle’ music. Music: Nucleya’s Koocha Monster EP (2013) marked the beginning of experimentation within electronic music circles in India. While it was earlier far removed from it, more producers started to tinker with sounds that had an established Indian context (like snippets from Bollywood for example). Although his success in mainstream music in India was not surprising, this particular track (New Delhi Nuttah ft Delhi Sultanate) still holds up in a genre he would later go on to define as solely his own.

September Podcast/ Das Naiz Music: Intro to Chronovision album by the german artist Oberhofer. Full album here: https://youtu.be/7GEuO6JFf3M Video: The dance sequence for the song ‘Jab pyaar kiya toh darna kya’ from the 1960 classic Mughal e Azam  I first found Oberhofer’s music through the animated TV show Bojack Horseman and was drawn to the angsty-yet-uplifting music and lyrics, which reminded me of the kind I used to listen to in high school. The album starts out with this slow, cinematic intro which I could only associate with the old school dance sequences of Bollywood. The video sequence is particularly funny, given the amount of drama they emote with such little movement.

The Syncsons: JULY 19
Music: 'Serenity' by Smokey AKA Smokey Facebook - www.facebook.com/Smokey.aka.Smokey  Soundcloud - www.soundcloud.com/smokey-aka-smokey Listen to it on Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/smokey-aka-smo... Original mix: @smokey-aka-smokey
Video: Journey Gameplay edited (Journey 2012)  This July I had the chance to mix visuals live for an all girl bass lineup, which included Mumbai based electronic artist Smokey aka Smokey. I thought the occasion was perfect for a set with video game play throughs. While finding clips and gifs I could use, I chanced upon a video of Journey which went almost perfectly well with one of Smokey’s songs ‘Serenity’. The game makes for some massive story-telling and great visuals so I tried to edit it with a bit more thought to what the story could be, how it could end according to the song.

We fucked up. Music: ‘Friday’ (Hindi) by the band Goldspot Video: Last scene from ‘The Graduate’ Mixed by Das Naiz This last scene is iconic and even though I’ve not seen the movie yet (!), I remember how it was the first time I’d come across a long shot that displayed the honesty of human thought (very rare in Bollywood). The feeling that the upward curve of a relationship could soon be replaced with boredom and drudgery.  As for the song, my friend in college had this hindi version on her itunes list of ‘Shower’ songs and we listened to it for weeks together. Soon after I found a video of the lead singer Siddharth Khosla singing the song to some ducks in the park and that established Goldspot as one of my favourite bands at some point.
