매출과 임팩트에 집중하는 곳에 몸을 담구면서 내가 얼마나 무용한 것들을 사랑하는지에 대해 돌아보게 되었다. 요즘 부쩍 내가 줏대 있다는 생각이 든 이유는, 항상 ‘그럼에도 불구하고 무용한 것이 결국 가치있어질거야.’ 라고 생각이 마무리 되기 때문이다.

“[3/3] 저는 열등감도 많고 내성적인 사람이에요. 예전에도 그랬고 사진작가가 된 지금도 그래요. 개인전도 숱하게 열었고 언론 인터뷰도 많이 했고 학생들도 가르치지만 용기는 사진을 얘기할 때, 또 제 살아온 이야기를 할 때만 나오죠. 지금도 누가 가라오케 가서 노래 부르라 하면 꽁무니를 뺄 거예요. 그래선지 저는 항상 주변에 있지만 눈에 띄지 않는 것들에 더 관심이 가요. 강의를 할 때도 번쩍번쩍 손들고 발표하는 친구보다 구석에서 묵묵히 필기하는 학생을 한번 더 보게 돼요. 전혀 주변의 주의를 못 끄는, 하나도 특별할게 없어 보이는 저 친구에게 사실은 대단한 재능이 숨겨져있는 것 아닐까, 하는 기대를 가지면서요.”

“[3/3] I’m an introvert with an inferiority complex. I was like this before, and even as a photographer, I’m still this way. I’ve held plenty of exhibitions and done many interviews with the press, and I lecture students, too. But my courage only comes when I talk about photography or my journey to this point in life. If someone came around right now and told me to sing karaoke, I’d be cowering in the corner. That might be why I’m more intrigued by the little things that are always there but so often go unnoticed. When giving a lecture, my attention is drawn more to the students who are quietly taking notes rather than those who are actively raising their hands to speak up. I’m interested in that plain person who hardly gets any attention from others, wondering if they have an amazing hidden talent.”

“할아버지께 한마디 말을 한다면 무슨 말을 하고 싶으세요?” “할아버지, 사랑합니다.” “반대로 할아버지께서 지금 본인의 모습을 보면 무슨 말씀을 하실까요?” “‘얼른 결혼해라.’”

“If you could say anything to your grandfather, what would you say?” “‘Grandpa, I love you.’” “On the other hand, if your grandfather could see you now, what do you think he would say?” “‘Hurry up and get married!’”

“연예인과 팬은 친구나 가족처럼 매일 보고 쌍방으로 교류하는 건 아니지만 초등학생 때부터 종현한테 영향을 많이 받았어요. 그 친구가 얘기하는 작가나 시를 이해하려고 책을 읽어 보기도 하고, 어떤 노래를 듣고 무슨 느낌이 들었다 하면 노래를 이해하려고 그 가수에 대해 찾아보기도 하고요. 그러면서 다양한 문화생활을 할 수 있었던 거 같아요. 종현의 인터뷰를 보면서 제가 생각하지 못했던 점을 배우기도 했어요. ‘사람을 이해한다’고 하잖아요. 근데 그 친구는 ‘이해’보다는 ‘인정’이라는 말을 좋아해요. 포기한다는 의미로 ‘그래. 너 인정해’ 이러는 게 아니라 상대방을 있는 그대로 받아들인다는 뜻에서 인정이라는 말을 쓴 거죠. ‘아, 저렇게도 생각할 수 있구나.’ ‘저런 생각은 배우면 좋을 거 같다’ 그 친구를 보며 느낀 이런 사소한 것들이 모여서 지금의 제가 만들어진 것 같아요.”

“The relationship between a celebrity and a fan is different from a relationship between friends or family, where you see each other every day and interact with each other. But since I was in elementary school, I was influenced a lot by Jonghyun. If he talked about a certain author or poem, I would read books to try to understand, and if he said he felt some way while listening to a certain song, I’d research that artist to try to understand the song more. While doing that, I was able to learn about a lot of different topics. Through watching his interviews I was also able to learn about things I had never even thought about. You know how people say you should try to ‘understand others.’ But he liked the word ‘accept’ rather than ‘understand.’ Not like, ‘Fine, I accept you,’ like you’re giving up, but ‘accept’ as in you are fully accepting the other person as they are. ‘Oh, I didn’t realize I could think like that too.’ ‘I think it’d be good to learn about that type of thinking.’ I think all the little things I felt while watching him made me into the person I am today.”

“제 전시회에 가장 모시고 싶었던 분은 제 할아버지예요. 부모님이 맞벌이하셔서 할아버지가 거의 저를 키워주셨거든요. 크리스마스날에는 같이 트리를 만들 정도로 낭만적인 할아버지셨죠. 할아버지가 약국을 하셨는데, 일이 끝나고 집에 오면 저녁 식사를 하시잖아요. 그럼 전 꼭 옆에 앉아서 말동무를 해드려야 했어요. 사실 그때는 그 시간이 참기 힘들었어요. 할아버지는 식물 재배 방법이나 수술 다큐멘터리, 전쟁 이야기를 주로 하셨는데, 그때 전 겨우 초등학교 1학년이었거든요. 그런데 그 시간이 지금까지도 기억에 소중하게 남아있어요. 다행히도 할아버지의 임종 순간을 지켜드릴 수 있었는데, 제가 잡고 있던 할아버지의 손이 점점 굳는 게 느껴지더라고요. 제 인생에서 그렇게 오열했던 날은 그때가 처음이었어요.”

“My grandfather is the one I most wish I could invite to my exhibition. My parents both worked, so my grandfather practically raised me. He was the sentimental kind of grandfather that went so far as to make a tree with me on Christmas Day. My grandfather worked at a pharmacy and would have dinner once he came back from work. Of course, I always had to sit next to and talk with him. Honestly, that period was hard to endure at the time. My grandfather talked about things like how to grow plants, surgery documentaries, or war, but I was only in first grade. But I value that time so much. Fortunately, I was able to be there with my grandfather when he passed away; I held his hand and felt it gradually stiffen. I had never sobbed that much in my life.”

“디자인 회사에 다니면서도 출근 시간보다 1시간 일찍 나와 카페에서 내가 정말 좋아하는 것을 찾는 시간을 가졌어요. 결국 내린 결론은 ‘그림 그리는 삶을 살고 싶다.’ 였죠. 하지만 그림으로는 밥을 먹고 살기 힘들잖아요. ‘돈은 어디서 벌지?’에 대한 고민은 도저히 해결이 안 되더라고요.” “그런데도 퇴사를 결심하신 이유는 무엇인가요?” “하루는 문득, ‘어? 나 이 고민을 5년 전, 6년 전에도 한 거 같은데 오늘도 하고 있네? 그럼 내년에도, 내후년에도 이 고민을 할 거 아냐.’라는 생각이 들더라고요. 자연스럽게 결정이 됐어요. 이럴 거면 내가 바뀌어야겠다고.”

“Even while working at a design company, I’d leave home with an hour to spare before my shift and go to a cafe, taking time to investigate the things that I really liked. The conclusion I eventually came to was, ‘I want to live life drawing pictures.’ But it’s hard to make a living on drawings, you know? I just couldn’t find the answer to my concerns about how I was going to make money.” “What was the reason you decided to leave your company despite that?” “One day I thought to myself, ‘Wait, you were worrying about this five or six years ago and you are still worrying about it now. Doesn’t that mean that next year and the year after you are still going to be worrying about this?’ So I was able to naturally come to the decision to leave. I thought, if this is how it’s going to be, I better change myself.”

“(가운데) 올해 29세인데, 고등학교 1학년 때부터 친하게 지내는 형이 있어요. 정말 친동생, 친형처럼 지내거든요. 둘 다 같이 음악을 해서 10년 정도 같이 팀 활동을 했어요. 근데 저희가 일주일에 거의 5일을 보던 사이였는데 팀 활동을 하니까 오히려 일주일에 한두 번 보는 사이가 되더라고요. 일적으로, 금전적으로 어쩔 수 없이 부딪치는 부분이 생기잖아요. 서로 잘 알다 보니까, 말을 하지 않아도 기분만으로도 서로의 상태를 알 수가 있어요. 그러니까, 연애랑 비슷했던 것 같아요. 연인이 헤어지면 영영 볼 수가 없게 되잖아요? 형과 저는 팀으로 묶이는 것보다 더 중요한 사이였는데, 이대로 가다간 사람을 잃을 것 같단 생각이 들더라고요. 서로 말은 안 했지만 비슷한 생각을 했던 것 같아요. 어느 날 형이 먼저, ‘우리 그만하는 게 어떨까.’ 하더라고요. 담담하고 슬픈 표정으로요. ‘그래’라고 이야기하는데 저도, 형도 목이 메었어요. 영화에서 연인들이 사랑해서 헤어진다는 건 아마 이런 걸 거예요. 10년 동안의 팀 활동을 그렇게 끝내고, 저는 다시 가장 소중한 형과 11년째를 보내고 있네요.” “두 분의 주제곡을 하나 정한다면요?” “‘뜨거운 안녕’으로 할게요. ”

“(Middle) I’m 29 this year, and there’s this older guy I’ve been close with since my first year of high school. We get along like we’re actually brothers. We’re both musicians, and we worked together as a team for around 10 years. We used to have a friendship where we’d meet up five days a week, but after becoming a team, we actually ended up only seeing each other once or twice a week. There are times when you can’t help but butt heads over work and money, right? After getting to know each other so well, we don’t need words but can tell through each other’s moods how the other is doing. I think it was something like being in a relationship. When couples break up, they never see each other again, do they? We used to be more than just two guys tied up together as teammates, but I felt like if things kept going on the way they were, I was going to lose that guy. Even though we never admitted this to each other, I’m pretty sure we were thinking in a similar way. One day, he made the first move and said, ‘Why don’t we just put an end to this?’ His expression was both composed and sad. I said, ‘Okay’, but both of us were choking up on the inside. It was probably like one of those couples in a movie, who break up out of their love for one another. That’s how our ten years of teamwork ended, and I’m now spending my eleventh year of friendship with my closest older bro.” “What song best describes your friendship?” “I’ll go with ‘A Passionate Goodbye.’”*
