what’s missing in afrofuturism
so right now i’m doing some research (for a mentor of mine) about afrofuturism. she’s brilliantly pulled together indigenous African ideas of time with ideas of conjuring and speaking things into existence. it’s amazing really. i didn’t realize just how philosophical afrofuturism is. i’m not into science fiction - books mainly, but also most films. but when it involves Black people and projections onto the past…projections into the future and all that comes along with afrofuturism, i’m here or it.
so i’ve been thinking about what my idea of an future would look like…a future for Black people, more specifically. i’ve done a number of image searched for ‘afrofuturism’ and it’s a lot of imagery involving galactic phenomena, planets, interesting clothing, and a lot of (western) technology; bionic body parts, robots, desert-like lands, and entire towns made out of pieced-together metals. the scenery looks a lot like a scrap yard or recycling centers.
the earth seems to be missing or altogether gone. and for me, hopefully, the future is full of greenery and gardens and trees and jungles and oceans and an even deeper connection with the earth than that of our ancestors. i want everyone to be in love with and in-tuned with the earth on levels never thought possible. i hope that we’ve figured out how to be content with what the earth gives us.
sadly, the earth might literally be missing from our futures. it’s warming up and will soon in the next million or so years be uninhabitable. and there’s no other planets with the type of environment suitable for plant-life (or…not the plant-life that exists here). no other planets like this that we know of in this galaxy or any others that have been explored.
the question is…do i (we) want to live in a world without plant-life/dirt earth? do i want to imagine living on a planet where we have to wear masks in order to breath or live in capsules under water? there’s already numerous studies that have shown that humans need to visually see and feel the earth in order to be of sound mind and body. it is literally a detriment to our bodies on a mental, emotional, and physical level for us to be away (inside) from touching and viewing earth and plant-life regularly. think about what being on a water-filled planet would do to us (scientists have theorized that after living on Mars, the next suitable environment might be Jupiter’s currently icy moon Europa which would be an ocean-filled moon by the time we need to live on it).
sounds like a nightmare, tbh….
