“You know that I’m not from here, so I’m not going to be precious about how silly this mermaid belief is.” If she said it loud enough, maybe she could will it into existence. As bizarre as it was, a safe human life was nice to pretend that she had gone through. Even with the fake rough adolescence… “If you’re obligated to stay with your ship, then that’s like being a captain.” She didn’t want to talk about where she would go next. “Maybe. The plan was to go back eventually, but it doesn’t feel right. I’ve always wanted to travel, though. New York City was on my list. What do you miss about it?”
Tumblr media
-
Theo always wondered what the new people must think about mermaid theme. It was different for tourists who sought it out, but what about those who moved here and had to live with it? Gabi seemed to think it was silly, and Theo had to agree with her. “I’ve never thought about it like that before,” Theo said when she compared him to a captain. It wasn’t like the boat ever went anywhere, so he felt more like a bartender on a slightly rocky surface. “Sounds very official.” Theo was always willing to talk about his life in New York. Maybe not the failed musician part, but the excitement of living in the city. “Everything?” He said with a weak laugh. “It’s noisy, but not in a bad way. It all becomes background noise, and if it ever went silent it would be disturbing. There’s so much good food from all around the world. Lots of interesting people from all over the world too. It really is the city that never sleeps. There’s something to do at all hours of he day.”

Where: Starboard Parks and Recreation; just after sunset
Weldon didn’t know how long he had been away from Port Vale. When more mers started getting sick, he wanted to look into it. He didn’t want to put any of his brothers in danger, or any mer for that matter. As soon as he arrived, he grabbed some of his old clothes from Isidore’s place. Which didn’t go as well as he had hoped. The fact of the matter is, Weldon didn’t tell anyone he was leaving, where he was going, or why. In retrospect, not such a good idea.
Weldon figured a stroll through the park would ease his guilty conscience, though he would never openly admit to feeling guilty. He liked taking a narrow trail that winded through a wooded patch, but didn’t expect to see anyone else on the path at this time. He saw their silhouette about 4 meters in front of him, but couldn’t make out who it was. “Uhhh.. Who is that?” Weldon hollered.
Tumblr media
-
Theo got so used to the constant white noise that came with living in New York City, and the smell of fumes that came with the subway grates and constant traffic. He didn’t mind at the time, but after coming back home, he had to appreciate the quiet and fresh, ocean air. He forgot how peaceful it could be when he was too busy taking it for granted.
He wouldn’t say the town itself was exactly peaceful right now. Moray was missing, Victoria seemed like she was up to something, asking Theo to keep an eye on a select group of people, and there was still an influx of new people. He decided to go on a walk around the park just for the hell of it, figuring it was a good way to clear his head, but it just seemed to make him think more. He didn’t realize someone was approaching them before they called out. “Theo?” He called back uncertainly. “Theo Seong. Weldon, is that you?”

“Hm. So I’m guessing that you don’t believe in mermaids. That’s sensible.” Even if it was true, the way that humans believed in mermaids and sirens so ridiculous that she liked the humans that didn’t believe that much better. Also the Anands were nosy, and couldn’t see far enough beyond their own noses to understand that sometimes the truth was none of their stupid business. “Delightful atmosphere for any nosy little town. Maybe you should consider moving away if everyone who moved here is going to get boring to you eventually. I don’t plan on staying here in the long run. One nice coastline is just that- one nice coastline. There’s more to see.”
Tumblr media
-
“I think so too,” Theo nodded, a little relieved to hear that from her. He grew up having mermaids shoved down his throat to the point where he felt like he couldn’t openly admit he didn’t believe in them, which wasn’t an issue just about anywhere else. “It’s unpopular here, but some people just don’t want to admit the mermaid theme is for money and not actually based on reality.” Theo almost laughed when Gabi advised him to move away, as if he hadn’t tried that already. “I did actually. I lived in New York City for years. I only recently came back, and now I kind of have to stay for The Houseboat. Where would you go next? Back to Miami?”

☆.。.:*・°☆🖌
Emilia sighed, somewhat in amusement that they had the similar experience. “I guess that’s just how it has to be for starving artists in a big city.” She commented, no matter the art, it was surely going to take a toll at one point or another. Very briefly Emilia considered how difficult it all was. Trying to make ends meet while just barely getting by. The first thought she had was back to her parents and their insistence that pursuing art was a waste of time and would go nowhere. At the time it sure felt like that was the case, that they had been right all along and she was just too stubborn to realize.
“Sorry if this is a sensitive question to ask, I’ll blame it on this incredible drink you made me-” she paused to take a sip of the drink, finishing it off before continuing to ask her question. “How long were you willing to stay? To see if you would actually make it? Or did you just give up on that when you came back home?” If he chose not to answer, that was fine with her, but her experience and time in the city was short lived for similar reasons, worrying that it would never happen and she might as well start over new somewhere else.
She chuckled at the question about wanting to be a tattoo artist, raising her brows in a ‘well, actually…’ kind of way. “Being a tattoo artist wasn’t exactly what I wanted to do with my life. I only really got into it when I moved here and Isidore hired me. I always wanted to just be an artist, have museum exhibits, sell my art and make a living off that.” She admitted, hearing it out loud and thinking how silly it might have been. “It was…unattainable and didn’t work out how I wanted. But this is a much better alternative.”
Tumblr media
Emilia looked around the still relatively empty bar, wondering if maybe they were too distracted to notice any new arrivals but it still seemed to be pretty quiet. So Theo continued to contemplate a new tattoo idea for her and she let him. “An alien would be entirely on brand. Aliens, UFOs, space, anything in that sphere of ideas will probably be the best to consider. Maybe I should just make it easy for myself and let all my tattoos be space themed.”
-
It was a sensitive question, and one that Theo didn’t really like talking about it, but at this point he already had talked about it so much over the past four years that he was almost numb to it. Almost. He wasn’t sure if he would ever make peace with the fact that he didn’t make it--not when he dedicated so much time, energy, and money into his music. He was beyond disappointed that it didn’t work out, but he wasn’t disappointed in The Houseboat. It was something new to dedicate himself to, even if it wasn’t part of the plan.
“I think I would’ve stayed forever if my dad hadn’t died,” Theo confessed with a nonchalant shrug, trying to seem as unbothered as possible. “I wasn’t really getting anywhere, but I wasn’t willing to give up either. Now...” He trailed off as he looked around the bar. “I don’t know. I found something new to try instead. It’s hard to say right now if it’s a success, but so far it’s going better than my nonexistent music career.”
It seemed like Emilia could relate. Instead of becoming an artist, she used her skills for something different. That’s the sad reality of trying to make a passion into a career. It rarely actually works out. “Yeah, I get that,” Theo sighed. “It sucks, right? At least you still get to express yourself in a way, but it’s not the same.”
Theo’s tattoo didn’t really match with each other, though he had a lot of music related ones. He was more spontaneous. When he got an idea, he just got it, whether it was on theme or not. He could see that working for Emilia though, especially since she was so into space. “That would probably look good,” he nodded in agreement. “You could be your own person galaxy.”

“You have been to a lot of bars then?” Ronan laughed at the human’s old wise man attitude. Truth be told, he did look familiar, the hippocampus just couldn’t say exactly from where. With how little Port Vale was, it wouldn’t be a surprise if they crossed each other’s path on the street before, though. “That does sound bad” he agreed on the comment about surprisingly strong drunk guys. “I never stop to think much about this sorta thing, tho. Too much thinking gets in the way of the fun.”
Tumblr media
Ronan opened a wide smile when the human asked him to show some bar tricks. “Okay, so, do you have a business card? Or do anyone around here have one?” he asked to the people around them, calling attention to what they were doing and picking up a coin from his pocket. “We’ll also need an empty bottle, so…” Ronan started chugging the rest of his beer so they could use that bottle. When he finished, he placed it on top of the bar counter, with the business card and the coin on top of it. “Trivia can be fun –  depending on what the questions are about – but I can drop this coin, inside this this bottle through the card. Like this” As Ronan stopped talking, he flicked the card to make the coin fall inside the bottle.
-
“I own one,” Theo informed him with a short laugh. He was still getting used to the fact that not everyone in Port Vale recognized him anymore. He grew up with practically the entire town knowing his name and his business, but there were so many new people now. That didn’t only include the ones who just arrived, but people who showed up while he was in New York too. Port Vale was a different place now. Probably for the better. “The Houseboat actually,” he clarified.
When the man asked for a business card, he fished his out of his wallet and handed it over. He made sure to order a good amount before he opened the bar to help get the word around. He fell silent as he watched him set up the trick. He saw a lot of weird magic tricks over the years, but he didn’t recognize this one so far. He almost expected a cheesy card trick, but instead he was impressed when he seamlessly flicked his card and caused the coin to fall in the bottle. “Damn,” Theo whistled with a clap. “I actually haven’t seen that one before. You got any others? I’ve never tried to learn anything like that before.”

“Oh! I didn’t mean all of the time. We’re thinking of the same idea,” Stella said very tentatively. Correcting people sometimes made them mad, but she didn’t want Theo to get completely the wrong idea of her. It was okay if people thought she was a bit foolish, she supposed, but not when it could be avoided quickly and (hopefully) not make the nice bar man mad.
Stella rubbed at her neck, and glanced at the door. “Maybe I should give you warning before I come back and only after I’ve taken the appropriate remedies,” she said, deciding that she had caused enough trouble for now. Paying with human money was an extremely exciting prospect, and she wanted to make sure she used the exact right amount of change. “How much should I pay? And are there extra taxes or things I should put in? I really haven’t gone to a lot bars before and, uh, someone else always ordered for me.”
Tumblr media
-
“Ah, in that case yes. Though hopefully you’ll just get used to it the more you go on boats,” Theo replied with a wave of his hand, unbothered by the correction. It was his own fault for assuming otherwise, but after the other things Stella said so far, he wouldn’t be surprise if she did think she had to constantly face the horizon no matter where she was.
“You don’t have to do that. I’ll just make sure I’m stocked up with ginger candies,” he laughed. He almost gave her the drink for free, as a welcome to Port Vale gift, but Theo couldn’t make it a habit of doing that for everyone when there was so many new people, and she seemed weirdly excited to pay. He didn’t want to ruin that for her. “There’s no extra taxes. It’s just ten dollars even,” he reassured her. “Thanks for making my night a little more exciting. I’ll see you around?”

“I can’t tell if that’s a sound business practice.” She was saying her thoughts out loud at this point. “Just outside of Miami, Florida. So… suburbs. Not exactly the same sort of place as here. It’s easier for people to be nosy here.” Port Vale was rather remotely located from societal hubs compared to many other human settlements. Although Gabi’s human persona wasn’t real, she felt that it was important to highlight what she would perceive as an important difference.
Tumblr media
-
Yeah, Gabi was definitely intense. Maybe it would’ve intimidated Theo enough to get him to just walk away ten years ago, but after living in New York City, he was used to intense. It was just strange to see in Port Vale--his tiny hometown where nothing ever changed for years up until now. “Yeah, Port Vale has its own unique brand of small and nosy,” he agreed with a quiet laugh. “Everyone knows each other’s business that we just end up getting bored with each other. All these new people is probably the first exciting thing to happen here since they founded the town.”

Ari was glad that she was not the only one to have witnessed the madness before her because while an actual fight would have been equally as exciting, this resolution was a far more entertaining story to share. Not that she knew who to share it with, which was why the voice of the stranger beside her was such a pleasant surprise. She laughed at the comparison, nodding because it really did seem that way. “If it goes according to those storylines, he’ll end up being his brother and his uncle or something.” Ari chuckled at the thought, now almost upset that they wouldn’t be able to find out precisely how these two were related. “Maybe I’ll have to come around more often just to see if they come back. Or I’ll go hunting around town, because wow, now I have to know.” Turning her attention now fully away from the spot the entire fight had taken place, Ari took another sip of her drink, only half joking. “What do you say? Fancy a little stalking and sleuthing?”
Tumblr media

“Mhm,” Theo nodded in agreement, thinking back on the some of the shows he’s watched in the past. “Maybe one of them is in the mafia too. You know, just because there always has to be at least one person in the mafia.” He’s always been interested in people watching or even just talking to strangers. He had a lot of opportunities as a bartender, since people tend to blurt out their life stories after a few drinks. It was ironic, because he was definitely an introvert, but he was also nosy and interested in learning what other people got up to. So, Theo didn’t hesitate to nod in agreement when she suggested they try and find out more. “Only if we get to wear disguises,” he said with feigned seriousness. “Something dark so we can blend in for the inevitable stakeout.”

luciennelively:
Status: Open Location: The Mermaid Inn
Tumblr media
She had found herself meandering towards the Inn again, stack of flyers in one hand and iced coffee in the other. The bulletin board outside advertised all sorts of town attractions. The last flyer she had put up there had all the little phone number tabs torn off, it was time to replace it. Lucienne had already stopped at a few other town establishments to hang up flyers, but the Inn was guarenteed to have good tourist foot traffic. It was the only place in town outsiders could stay when they visited, which meant it was an excellent breeding ground for drumming up business for her tours.
As she walked she looked fondly down at the flyers in her hand. They were a new design, Isaiah had helped her pick out the new colors. Lucienne grinned as she thought back to the other evening that they had spent together, giggling over how absurd they could make their advertisements look. They had probably wasted a good amount of time making designs that she would never use, but Lucienne always valued the moments in which she could make her son laugh.
She was too wrapped up in her memory to notice the person walking towards her, setting herself on a collision course with them. Lucienne only looked up in time to widen her eyes in alarm as she walked straight into the other person, her coffee bursting open and spilling over both of them. She tripped, dropping her flyers and skinning her palms on the pavement. Hissing, she turned to look back at the other person, ready to chew them out. At least until she saw them covered in coffee with a flyer stuck to the front of their shirt. There was a pause, and then Lucienne burst out laughing.
“Oh God…” She trailed off, giggles overtaking her. “I’m so sorry, I shouldn’t be laughing.”  Grinning, she stood up and made a move to peel the flyer off their shirt.
-
Theo spent so much time on The Houseboat these days that sometimes he forgot he was constantly on water until he finally left and realized how steady the ground was. It was a little disorienting and a reminder that he should probably be less of a hermit, but it was hard to remove himself when it was both his home and his business. He couldn’t advertise his new happy hour thought without leaving, so he ventured to the town center with a handful of flyers.
It always felt a little weird to go to The Mermaid Inn. He got along fine with Renzie, but his last interaction with Steph didn’t exactly go well, so he wasn’t eager to potentially run into her. It was a small town though, and he couldn’t avoid it, unless he moved all the way back to New York. That was out of the question at this point.
Before hanging up his flyers, he stopped into the café and picked up a coffee, leaving one on the corkboard inside. He was so busy balancing his coffee and his flyers that he didn’t realize he was heading straight for someone until they bumped into each other, sending his coffee toppling to the ground just before ice cold liquid soaked his shirt.
“Fuck, that’s cold,” he yelped before he realized that he was so distracted that it was Lucienne who he knocked over. He was ready to profusely apologize when she burst out laughing, and he couldn’t help but join her. They both probably looked ridiculous, scrapped up and soaked with coffee.
“No, it’s fine,” he laughed as she pulled the flyer off her shirt. “You don’t look much better than me. Sorry about that. I was carrying more than I could handle,” he explained and paused to take a look at the coffee stained flyer in her hands. “What’re the flyers for?”

“Space is pretty cool. But I get how the endless expanse of it all can be a lot. Not thinking about it too much is a good plan, if I’m thinking about it all when high I might lose my mind.” She laughed, knowing that there have been times where she was so far gone over the thought.
When it came to music, Emilia wasn’t the type to actively search for something new to listen to. There were people who heard a song on the radio on repeat over and over and got sick of it but to her, those songs were catchy and she understood why they got played so often. So her playlists mostly consisted of those kinds of songs as well as the occasional song by those popular artists that didn’t get played as often, that was pretty much the extent of her search for music. “Oh yeah, I’m sure other musicians have great song recs. Are you friends with a lot of musicians? I imagine there are quite a few that you would have met in New York. When I lived in the city I feel like everyone was either trying to be a musician or an actor.”
When he pulled out his phone and asked her about the type of tattoos she liked, Emilia rolled up her sleeve as best as she could to show off her current tattoo of a faceless girl with planets swirling around her head. “Would you call this artsy? I think so…so I guess something like this but I’m ok with cartoony stuff, anything pretty. I don’t know, this is why I’m so indecisive.” She chuckled, leaning over a bit to take a look at his phone screen and what he might be looking up. “You don’t have to pick something now, if you need time to plot I’m more than happy to wait.” She explained, knowing that asking him to pick her next tattoo was a big task but also not sure how soon she was willing to get whatever new tattoo he suggested. At least if she gave him the time to think about it she could prepare herself accordingly.
-
Theo grimaced at the thought of contemplating space while high. He could only imagine how overwhelming that could get. “I definitely don’t want to try that,” he laughed with a shake of his head. Although, he couldn’t really control that unless he just never got high again. He used to smoke weed a lot more than he does now, but sometimes it’s a nice way to wrap up a night after a long day of bartending.
“Yeah, a few of us ended up living together too, since struggling musicians can’t really afford rent,” Theo pointed out. It wasn’t the greatest living situation, but it had it’s moments. It was kind of nice to share a space with all of those people who were interested in similar things, the sound of guitars strumming bleeding through the walls at 3am. He never minded it, but he had his own space now, and he couldn’t imagine going back to that. “That’s where we all usually go to try and “make it,” he nodded in agreement. “Did you always want to be a tattoo artist? It seems like an awesome job.”
Theo leaned over the bar top to peer down at Emilia’s tattoo, smiling when he saw a design that fit her well. “I’d call that artsy,” he agreed. “Maybe like a minimalist artsy.” He wasn’t an expert on art or tattoos, considering it wasn’t his job. He just had a lot of experience getting them. Emilia reassured him that he didn’t need to pick a design now, but he still fell quiet for a moment as he thought about some ideas. “I can look up some examples, but I was thinking something like an alien. Like either an alien head or the outline of an alien. You could keep up the space theme.”

Stella desperately wanted to know more about whatever Dramamine and motion sickness bands were. She couldn’t figure out how to spell Dramamine, but she would have to figure it out if she wanted answers (and she always wanted answers). Leaning forward, she listened intently to the story, trying to pick out where Theo was going with this. Looking out at the horizon…? “Do you think that might work for me? Always sitting or standing facing the horizon?” It probably wouldn’t be societally the norm, but she would have an explanation ready about how Theo said it was how it helped his mom.
“Uhm, I’ll probably be okay. I think going through life is a series of not feeling well and then feeling better when the situation changes, and then back to more, uh, unwellness. You don’t need to worry about me. You’ve already given me so much help.” Someone could probably stand to worry more about Stella, but it certainly wasn’t Theo’s job.
Tumblr media
-
Theo couldn’t hold in the laugh this time as he imagine Stella constantly facing the horizon. Part of him wanted to encourage it just in hopes that he would run into her stubbornly facing the ocean out in public, but he wouldn’t do that to her. He didn’t know what her deal was, but she seemed a little naïve, and she didn’t need him steering her wrong. “No, you don’t need to do that all the time. Just when you’re on a boat,” he chuckled. “Basically, when you’re looking at the ground, you can feel the movement more, but if you look towards the horizon, it makes things feel more steady. You can try looking out one of the windows in here to see if it helps.”
The way Stella described life was a little on the sad side, but also very true. Everyone got sick, then got better, then got sick again. Just hopefully not too frequently. It wasn’t like she would always be motion sick. “Very wise words,” he said solemnly. “I’m glad I could help. I didn’t think I had a pharmacy ready, but I guess I was wrong.”

Gabi had some vague familiar with Yelp, but she didn’t laugh because she understood this to be a private joke and also she did not think it was very funny. “Okay. Well I don’t go there often at all since bars are also not my thing.” Well they weren’t. She had given up largely on actively trying to win over townspeople. “But there’s nothing offensive about your business. You’re doing fine. And we meet now. I’m Gabi.”
Tumblr media
-
Gabi wasn’t the strangest new person he met, but there was definitely a theme going on here. The newcomers seemed to be rude, socially awkward, blunt, or just bizarre. He was starting to believe they all escaped from the same cult. Given the kind of shows he watched on TLC before, it wouldn’t be impossible. “That’s fine. This isn’t me trying to get you to go,” he felt the need to explain. He didn’t want to be that pushy local trying to get people to go to his humble small-business. “I’m Theo. Where’d you move from?”

Ari was hyper focused on the argument that was going on between the two rather irate men, one much older than the other. There were two traits of hers that seemed to always get her into trouble. One, she was far too nosy for her own good and two, she could not be discreet to save her life. So as Ari watched them, she narrated the sequence, along with what she wanted to see. “Tell him he’s an idiot,” she muttered quietly, silently cheering when that was what the older stranger said to the younger one. “You don’t know anything old man,” she mouthed along with him, nodding at the language she had used plenty of times herself. Ah, teenage angst and overconfidence. The elder pulled his fist back and Ari’s eyes widened. Was he going to clock him? Instead his arm looped around the younger boy’s shoulder. “Let’s go, young stud,” she chuckled at the description. “Before your mother kicks you and this old man out.” What an odd turn of events, Ari thought, looking for any stranger who shared her wonder and confusion. “Did you just see that?”
Tumblr media
-
It was hard not to notice the argument happening a few feet away from him, and Theo wasn’t even going to pretend not listen when clearly everyone was. It would be far from the first time he witnessed a fight break out in public. As a bartender, he had to summon the bouncer multiple times when someone got a little too drunk and decided to throw fists. He hoped it didn’t escalate to that point, because he didn’t want to have to be the one to break it up. He tensed when the older man pulled his fist back, trying to decide on the fly whether he should interfere or not, only for the unexpected to happen as things grew weirdly friendly. He made eye contact with the woman next to him and let out a surprised laugh. “I feel like I just witnessed a K-Drama,” he said. “I’m still confused about what their relationship is, but I guess we’ll never find out.”

Adrian wiped his hands as he came out to the front of the bakery.  Someone had called in sick, so he would take over the customer service for the morning.  That didn’t bother him.  Sure, he preferred to be doing the hands-on work to create the food, but he also enjoyed meeting the customers and getting to interact with people.  So many people seemed to enjoy coming in for fresh and homemade – probably so they didn’t have to do it for themselves. He didn’t mind doing the work; it felt good to help people by providing food.
“Good morning,” he greeted, his smile warming as the person walked up to the counter. “What can I get you today?”
Tumblr media
-
It was one of Theo’s rare days off, and he didn’t really know what to do with himself. Even when he took a day, he still usually filled it with maintaining The Houseboat--checking their inventory, balancing the checkbook, etc. Ever since opening the bar, he kind of forgot how to rest, but he decided to give it a try today. While he could’ve spent the day lounging in bed, he decided to actually go out and about, figuring he could get a nice coffee and a pastry or something.
He landed on the Baked by the Deep Bakery. He didn’t go in there often, and as a small business owner, he wanted to give some of the other local businesses some attention. As he entered the bakery, he was greeted with a man he never met before and decided he must be one of the new people. “Good morning,” he echoed with a small smile. “Uh--I don’t know actually. I didn’t really have anything in mind. Do you have a favorite?”

Stella looked at Theo with fear in her eyes. Sea sickness? How was she supposed to get seasick if she was from the sea? Well, ocean. She was from the ocean. She’d never encountered anything like this before. “Oh, I don’t like this at all. I’ve never lived so close to the shore before, so this has never come up.” It wasn’t a lie, but probably the opposite of what Theo was thinking Still, she’d never been on a boat before. Or, well, she couldn’t remember having been on a boat. Maybe she’d gotten on one and forgotten? Everything was just a little scary right now.
Accepting the candy, she turned it over in her hands. Human remedies were so interesting. She wondered how much of this she would be able to identify explicitly as ginger compared to the other liquid ingredients from the drink. “Thank you very much.” Stella was tempted to try to put the wrapper in her mouth too to see if it tasted good, but she wasn’t that naive. She unwrapped it, and put it in her mouth. Yes, ginger was quite an exciting taste. “I’m sorry for making your job difficult when this clearly isn’t your favorite part of it.”
Tumblr media
-
“Yeah, people who aren’t used to be being on boats are pretty susceptible to it,” he explained with a sympathetic grimace. “Luckily, there’s a lot of different ways to treat it. Dramamine, motion sickness bands, making sure you eat way before you get on,” he listed off. “My mom used to get motion sickness when she went on the boat with my dad, but she said it helped to look out to the horizon.” He barely noticed the movement after literally growing up on a boat, so he didn’t even consider the fact that people might actually get sick at his bar from anything other than drinking too much. His mistake.
Theo waved off her apology and gave her a reassuring smile. “Don’t worry about it. It’s my fault for not being ready for the people potentially get sea sick on the boat,” he laughed. “If anything, you’re helping me. Now I’ll have a little kit ready or something. Let me know if you still aren’t feeling well and I can get a cab to take you home.”

“Please do not do that,” Isidore immediately request, frown appearing, and totally misreading any sarcasm that may have been intended. Attention was not something he often liked to upon himself, especially lately; the lower he could keep his head, the better. “I just figured that would be enough to cover my gratitude for the next few beers I am sure to order.”
It was impossible to know if Theo was just being nice by denying she’d said anything, honoring some sort of secret pact between the two, or he genuinely just hadn’t known. Isidore was too tired, and frankly didn’t care enough either way, to try and figure it out. If Theo had heard from Emilia the ‘story’ Isidore had given her, then that would be a battle to contend with later. For now, he was just a guest in a bar, and Theo could speculate (or not speculate) whatever he liked. “It will pick up in the Spring, so best get in now, while you can.” He says, as if Anchored Hearts could ever be truly considered a busy place. Surely the Houseboat, even in slow months, saw more visitors than the tattoo parlor.
A nod of approval was all Isidore offered in exchange for Theo explaining his ideas. He’d been wanting to try shadow-work recently, with heavy black shading, and the shapes made out of un-inked skin left without the ink’s blemish. He blamed the nightmares- but of course, Isidore said nothing on this. “Let Em do the guitar, I think she would prefer that one. I have been meaning to come up with designs, but, I have been pre-occupied lately. I am fixing a boat, and I might get a cat. Do you have a cat, Theo? Pets, or anything?” He’d been considering it, but with his already crowded apartment, Isidore wasn’t sure that was the best idea at the moment. “You should get a bar cat around here. They help with mice, apparently.”

“You sure you don’t want anything stronger?” Theo asked hesitantly before giving Isidore a small, half-smile. He wasn’t going to push him, but he seemed like he was having a rough night, and he wouldn’t judge him if he just needed to let loose for the night. He didn’t plan on putting any pictures of the man on his wall, no matter how attractive he was, but the idea clearly bothered him. In a way he got it, because he definitely wasn’t the type to take selfies and put them on Instagram, but he had to wonder if there was something deeper going on.
“Sure thing,” Theo nodded in understanding. He knew from growing up in Port Vale that the only time more than a few visited this town was during spring and summer break. At least, that was how it used to be before a bunch of people randomly decided to move here. It was a mystery to Theo, since he spent his whole life trying to run from this place. And yet, here he was. Back home with no plans of leaving any time soon.
There was a lot to process with Isidore’s statement. Theo was still stuck on the boat when he mentioned the cat...and then the mice. He considered a potential rodent problem when he was making sure The Houseboat was up to code, but he was hoping he took enough measure for that to never happen, but maybe he did need a cat. “I’ve actually always wanted a dog,” he admitted. “I’ve just been holding off since I’ve been so busy. Seems unfair to have one if I’m working all the time.” He went backtracked to the boat, because that was the first he heard Isidore was working on one, and he was definitely interested. “Hey, you need help with that boat? Obviously, I have experiencing with fixing up boats,” he laughed as he gestured around him.

“Oh, I don’t like them either. But there’s always something to take advantage of in the worst of times, and in this case it is food.” Not every opportunity meant that she should take advantage of it, but she was never truly backed into a corner from anything except this stupid darkness. Gabi rolled her eyes. “I’ve been there before, but not often. It’s fine. Clean. Not too dark. Why? Do we have to go there?” She didn’t really like all of the funny drink names and concoctions on the menu, but that seemed to be a bar problem rather than a vehicle-based foodservice problem.

Theo definitely agreed with that. He was the type to avoid awkward moments at parties by sticking by the food. It wasn’t that he hated parties and didn’t know how to make the most of them. This just wasn’t his an idea of a party--an event hosted by Victoria. It felt more like going to a party with his boss, and he didn’t even have a boss. He let out a surprised laugh when she gave a very honest review of his bar. “I wish I could add that to my Yelp reviews,” he murmured before shaking his head. “No one has to go there. I just own it. That’s mostly how I’ve been meeting all the new people coming to town.”
