"I was," Luella said, gulping. She finally met Newt's eyes and it looked like she was caught in a tug-of-war. "I still am," she admitted. "I-I guess. I mean, I haven't seen you in years and-". She scratched the back of her neck awkwardly.

What was she going to do? The creatures could have very well been dangerous, but Newt was her friend.

Then again, she had worked so hard to get where she was at her job and she couldn't fail.

  It was only his second week, but already Newt knew that this job would be the end of him. After his time in Ukraine, he could not have imagined a place that filled his stomach with even more dread simply by thinking of going there after waking up in the morning. Well, he had been wrong. Every day upon entering the office, he had to go face to face with a mailbox overflowing with unanswered letters and owl excrements. Every night when he was finally done digging through the papers, he went home carrying the knowledge that he would have to do it all over again tomorrow. The office was small and stuffy and grey, and his boss would never stop ranting about the shortcomings of her house elf.

  But, alas. He had bills to pay. And Theseus would never forgive him for dropping out of the job he had fought tooth and nail for Newt to get. And still, there was this small part of him that couldn’t stop hoping that maybe, just maybe, this was his chance to actually change something for the better.

  With this somewhat comforting thought in mind, Newt packed up his things at the end of his shift, and made his way through the grand entrance hall. He had almost made it past the dreadful fountain in the middle, when the glimpse of a familiar face suddenly made him stop.

Luella's loyalties were being put to the test. This was her job. She was doing what was right. It was not like she was taking Newt’s animals away. She was only trying to calm him down enough to take him in for questioning. He was the one trying to manipulate her into letting him go.

At least, that was what she told herself that he was doing, so she would not let herself be fooled.

But when he held out his pinkie finger, her mind was sent into a haze of memories. They used to always pinkie promise for everything when they were at Hogwarts. It was a sign of trust and friendship for them. Something that connected them.

But she could not lost her job.

Finally, she made a decision: she bumped his pinkie finger with hers, rather than wrapping her finger around it. That wasn’t how they used to do it, so it would not count as lying if she tried to take him in, right?

That is what she told herself when she smiled after she did it. “Right then,” she said. “Pinkie promise. Now how about that coffee?”

Luella was so caught up in Newt's presence that she was almost mesmerized. He was indeed adorable. He always had been. He was even more adorable when he became protective of his animals.

"I miss you, too, Newt," she said softly, but he was gone, and she realized what he had done, causing her to frown. She hoped that she would see him again under better circumstances.

For now though, she allowed herself to soak in the moment as it has been.

She smiled sadly, turned on her heel, and walked away, trying to think of what to tell her superiors.
