okay so this post is wrong but what the heck it’s a Tumblr post, right, it’s mostly a joke, only it’s so perfectly echoing an idea I’ve seen elsewhere too, from actual paid critics and academic critiques, that Hugo “wasn’t writing for emotional teenagers”, that he’d be horrified by fandom, that he was too High and Erudite for the likes of  screaming theater kids and emotional teenagers

y’all. Y’all.

Another AO3 thing I’m curious about, how do yall decide if something is good enough to read? Usually I follow a rule of 1 kudos for every 10 hits. One because it’s easy math and two it’s yet to fail me. Thoughts? Do you just go for it and pray it’s good?

#hearing people choose what to read based off of kudos or comments is so wild to me #i search by character or pairing and then look at the tags and summary of the ones that come up #if it doesn't feature any of my squicks i'm reading it!!!!!!!! #if it's about my fave characters i don't really care abt anything else and if it's bad? well. that's what the back button is for baby!!! #but generally i feel like i have quite a high tolerance for what i'm willing to read when it comes to fic #like... someone else is doing the work of putting my blorbos in Situations. and letting me read about it. for free!!!!! #i also Will work my way through my entire search results #which means i never sort by kudos because i'm not afraid of missing anything. I Will Get There Eventually

Courfeyrac is a big phone user. Enjolras is not. I believe that these two went through an entire YEAR of close friendship before Courfeyrac is finally in the room when Enjolras says “Yeah hang on let me just text them and ask” before whipping out one of these bad boys and sending a message

On the occasions where it's adapted, I can think of few versions that go whole hog on all the obstacles Jean Valjean enocunters during chapter 1.7.5 of Les Mis, "Hindrances." I'm not sure why Hapgood went with that translation of the chapter title, as FMA goes for "Sticks in the Spokes," which is much more evocative, and even Denny seems to be going with a similar (though much stupider) "Spokes in the Wheel." I'm guessing the original French was closest to FMA?

It's fairly understandable, especially for the shorter adaptations, to not include what's basically a series of start-stop-will-he-won't-he-be-able-to-continue despite the tension of it all, but Arai isn't a shorter adaptation and thus, from pages 99–107 of Volume 3 in Japanese, he gets in at least the first of Valjean's delays, when the wheel breaks and he has to find an alternate means of transportation.

The kid who leads Valjean to the cart that he uses to continue his journey calls him "ojisan." Just like much earlier with Petit Gervais, "Ojisan" is a perfectly respectable term for a middle-aged man, but it can also mean "uncle," and is the exact term that Valjean's nieces and nephews used for him (there's several tweaks you can make to it to make it more or less formal - jisan, jichan, ojisama, etc, but in all 3 cases, it's exactly "ojisan.")

It just seems to add to the stress and inner trauma Valjean is going through here (you can see Valjean's reaction to being called "ojisan" in the 3rd and 4th panels).

Also, for anyone who holds as much love in their heart for LM 1.7.5 as I do, I attempted a modernisation of it for last year's brick renouveautions event, which you can find here

I spent so long on google maps for this one and it took ages to complete because you can literally drive from montreuil-sur-mer to arras in like.... half an hour. So trying to invent ways to keep valjean away was a real exercise in frustration. But also really, really fun
