❝ Hmm. ❞ She knows Arlecchino has her reasons to get along with those kids. Yes, she might care about them, but she also needs them to run her clandestine operations. Esmé doesn't claim to understand her motives entirely—she wouldn't dare guess—but she knows they are not as pure as providing a home for orphans. In that regard, it's easier to read Tartaglia; he enjoys battle and is loyal to the Tsaritsa and his family. Whatever else he does, those are his underlying motives.
She falls in the same category as Arlecchino, though. Underhanded, with no loyalty to anyone but her children.
Looking up at the Harbinger from her comfortable sprawl on the snowy ground, Esmé raises a hand to block out the overly bright sun peeking from the clouds. It disappears as quick as it came, and she finds him smirking down at her when the glare subsides. ❝ Don't you say you learn something new from every battle which is why you're always improving? Well, you learned something. ❞ She shrugs, pulling herself to sit up, shaking the snow out of her hair like a cat does water. She chuckles at his jest. He almost makes it sound as if kissing strangers in the midst of battle is fun. Perhaps it is for some, but she likes to keep a low profile and dissolve into the shadows. Not one pair of lips she's kissed has managed to make themselves memorable, both in and out of battle, and she has kissed plenty.
Getting to her feet and brushing the snow from her coat, Esmé turns her head to look at him. It's not a Harbinger's cloak but an ordinary black coat with maroon trim. She likes the Fatui cloaks, but they draw too much attention. Not that she is officially part of the Fatui, not entirely.
❝ Not always. Only when it will not turn the tables on me, when distraction is the quickest way out of a sticky situation. Have you any tips to share, Lord Harbinger? ❞

"Arlecchino may be an exception, but that isn't exactly saying much when there are nine other Harbingers who aren't," Tartaglia said as he crossed his arms over his chest idly. He always preferred a more straightforward approach to his endeavors, which often meant a blade straight through his enemy's chest. He didn't like the games that so many of the other Harbingers played. Il Capitano had a method more similar to the Eleventh Harbinger's own, but practically everyone else was underhanded in their approaches. He hated it.
At the sudden change of topic, however, a somewhat surprised expression crossed the Harbinger's face. He shifted his stance to lean on one leg, his large coat engulfing his form as he remained with his arms crossed over his chest. But at least now he was smirking in amusement. Oh right, that kiss... If one could even call it that. He certainly didn't. It was a tactic to divert his attention, and unfortunately, it worked.
"You're right. I won't fall for that trick so easily again~" he joked with a chuckle. "And no, it wasn't my first. But it was the first time anyone had kissed me to distract me in a fight." He normally would be annoyed at an underhand tactic like that--it almost seemed like something La Signora would do--but he was only amused by it. "Do you always give your opponents a kiss to throw them off guard?" the Harbinger teased.

I don't know if this would count as NSFW but like, I'll tag and cut it but uhhhh to summarize Esmé headcanon.
Thinking about Es, like, actually enjoying sex. Because she doesn't. She's very indifferent to it because it's a task on some work projects for her and that is exactly how she treats it/views it so she grows up not understanding why people think it's a pleasurable thing.
Cue her having an actual partner she likes. She's so confused now because, like, it's the exact same physical thing that's going on. How does it feel good now and not before? And then she will compare it and be more confused because this is apparently person-specific. It feels really childish and like, yes, intuitively she knew that but she definitely did not expect it to feel as different as it does.
It would also just be that much more confusing if her now-partner was someone she had sexual relations with through previous jobs. Because it is the exact same person and the only thing that has changed is how she sees them/feels about them.
Depending on the situation and relationship dynamic, I would not be surprised if she actually got emotional enough to cry the first time.
Anyway, here's my dumb lil brainrot about Es tonight. I will not go tend to my one (1) draft.

Saw this quote and now I'm just thinking about how Bianca internalized that, because she is weak in terms of whatever power system there is, she has to put herself through unpleasantness to make up for her lack of power.
For example, in her Jujutsu Kaisen verse, she's barely made it to grade two as a sorcerer. And she knows she can't get any better because of the way the power system works; you're born with it or you're not. So, she decides to go take a forensics degree and deal with all the aftermath of curses. And we know canonically that that's disturbing; for instance how Gojo describes it to Yuji before his execution or just how Yuji even experienced the sorcery world or how the light novel chapter in which Nanami and Gojo go on a mission describes the whole thing. And then there's the fact that a lot of bodies that come in are literally people she works with and knows and cares about. I can make a whole other post about her twin ending up on her autopsy table.
And, sure, she grew up in a sorcerer family so she shouldn't really be put off by it but this was in Europe. Europe, where they don't have curses like they do in Japan because Japan holds the monopoly on cursed energy. Sorcerers like her and Miguel are so few and far between that they basically make up 1% of the sorcerer population. And because of that, especially because of that, she feels like an even bigger disappointment because her lineage has basically been waiting for another sorcerer for ages. And they got stuck with her.
It's a similar mentality via other routes in her other verses.
But, yeah, she's just internalized that, because she's not stronger, this is how she can make up for it in spite of the fact that she's actually just a cinnamon roll.

And so I reached the age of twenty-five, having barely cast a glance at anything but books and ruins and knowing nothing of life; I spent all my fervor in my work. I loved a few friends… but it was not so much my friends I loved as friendship - it was a craving for high-mindedness that made my devotion to them so great; I cherished in myself each and all of my fine feelings. For the rest, I knew my friends as little as I knew myself.
