I love this scene particularly because it’s epitomising ‘be gay, do crime’ in the way the phrase should always resonate and often doesn’t: reminding us that in many times and places being gay is doing crime, and that’s why laws are not morality.

another idea for a fic i’ll never write bc the mere thought of the amount of research it would need makes me want to lie down on the floor for an entire week: joe gets separated from the others during a major conflict (i usually think crimean war bc 1. big, 2. we know they were there, 3. booker was already with them, and 4. not in the 20th century) and takes a whole year to reunites with them bc he keeps getting sidetracked helping people along the way because no matter how much he misses his family to the point of literal body pain (and a few hallucinations but let’s not get that deep), he still can’t turn his back to anyone who needs him

And, actually, in regard to this post on the team reunion at the opening of The Old Guard, I have more questions.

To recap: Booker sneaks up on Andy, they exchange pleasantries, she gives him a book, he knows Joe and Nicky are already at the hotel. He has not been to the hotel, because he grabs his bag off the bike and because–when he and Andy get there–he checks in.

And it’s clearly an excuse to give time to show that Andy is upset about the state of the world and fearful of being able to hide, and a great gif opportunity for the line about family, but why is he checking in when Joe and Nicky are already inside the room?

You might say that he is checking into a different room, to which I respond ha. This is a man who sets up a camp bed between two other beds instead of literally anywhere else in the church! They sleep on the same side of a train car! They are either on sabbatical across different continents, or they are in the same room.

Which leads me to the logical conclusion that Joe and Nicky did not check in. They arrived at the hotel, scouted all of the empty rooms, and decided that this one had nice vantage points and comfortable chairs. “We are in the top floor, on the east corner,” Nicky tells Booker over the phone. “Do not tell Andy about the baklava, or the bet is off.”

“Did you check for a fucking room number?” Booker replies, but Nicky has already hung up the phone.

Today's flavor of insanity is brought to you by the fact that we only get ONE scene where Joe and Nicky are alone in a room. And it's in a fucking lab where they're being held hostage and Nicky was being tortured in it literally less than 5 minutes ago. And yet all it takes is for Joe to say ONE line (one fucking line. Hell, it's one word) and Nicky laughs unabashed for the ONLY time in the entire movie. He laughs unabashed and he even snorts and he looks more relaxed and open than at any other point, including the bet. Because it's just him and Joe and when it's just him and Joe he can allow himself to let every guard down, which he doesn't do even when he sleeps because he sleeps with a gun, but somehow, in the middle of the enemy's lair, after being tortured, Nicky can allow himself to relax enough to ugly laugh. Because it's just him and Joe and as long as it's just him and Joe he doesn't have to keep himself in check

Obsessed with the idea of Andy and Quynh making plans for a mission and saying something like "Hanoi in 17" and even Nicky and Joe are confused and are like "?? 17 when?" And Andy and Quynh are like "the year 17."

I think about joe and nicky at the hotel being cute and having extreme gay uncles on vacation energy in their matching linen shirts and I take 10 points of mental damage. I’ve said this before but they look like they’re just about to pop down for drinks at the hotel bar and then maybe a walk on the beach if it’s not too hot out. flexing on everyone at the hotel by simultaneously being the young hot couple on honeymoon and the sweet old couple enjoying retirement
