THE MESSAGE | Film & Photography L3 Final Piece.

Through this project, one of my aims was to develop a film/ short off of a still image from a previous project or piece of work. Both to see what I can develop and how my technical, practical, and analytical skills have developed over my time at college. Through doing this project I have learned how to colour grade and the process that one has to go through to colour balance. I have learned that making clear storyboards and plans is important even for mostly experimental shots.

I had documented the location scouting and any research and films I believe to have been relevant as well as an in-depth look at the equipment I wanted to use, so the camera, the lenses, and the editing software I had planned to use.

There were a lot of problems that I had to overcome during this project, like covid restrictions, finding people to film with and arranging equipment to use, and the spaces to use the equipment in.

I had created three experiments of colour grading within a sequence to see how it would change the context or theme of the piece while still wanting to keep to the original idea/ concept.

Green & Yellow Colour Grade - this was loosely inspired by the coloring of the joker (2019). The coloring of this experiment is supposed to build suspense for the viewer and give it a mysterious feel. This colour grade is the most unique looking out of all of the grades I have done for this film/ piece. I feel like I have somewhat stuck to the original idea with this piece. As it is not in black and white it does have a slightly different meaning/ context /tone for the whole piece.

I did in fact achieve what I set out to do which was recreate/ develop a piece from an idea I had on another project. My concept did change and develop somewhat as I ended up focusing more on cinematography and colour than the actual narrative and development of the piece.

Reflective Paper on Netflix’s - “The Social Dilemma”

People often say something like “when AI and computers run the world” it is to be argued that it already does, though automated algorithms. The Social Dilemma is a documentary about the impacts of digital AI algorithms and social media, this documentary has elements of drama to show the impact of the algorithms in daily life. It discusses the rise of social media and the impact it has had on society as it is. The documentary discusses subliminal messaging throughout ads and promoted content this type of content and AI has control over the actions, thoughts and beliefs of the people that are subjected to it. It goes on to explain the hold that large social media companies have over the masses of the population.

“The technology that connects us also manipulates us”.

It is mentioned all throughout the documentary that the ads and content we are being shown throughout scrolling social media influence our what we think, do, buy and speak. The social media algorithms and social media in general creates three dilemmas/ ethical problems. A Mental Health Dilemma where studies show the correlation between social media usage and the rise within teens and young adults suffering with self-harm or declines in mental health, body image and physical health. Social media platforms by design and algorithmic testing are supposed to keep you engaged in an endless scroll, push notifications. The Discrimination Dilemma. Over 50% of the people who join virtual hate groups do so because the algorithm has steered them in the direction of those groups. – Internal Facebook report 2018. The algorithm of the website that you are on steers you in a direction it thinks you want to go, these algorithms look at what you respond to and send you more of that same content, it is based on watch time and clicks, how many times you respond to certain notifications. The Democracy Dilemma, social media gives people the opportunity to advertise with ease. This advertisement could be spread amongst the masses within a few hours if spread by “bad actors”. These people who share their bias online could influence groups of people to believe do or say things that may not be true. There was a moment in the documentary where one of the people speak on Russia’s involvement in the election in the USA. After it was shown that they had no direct indolent in the us elections they did use the AI’s and algorithms to their advantage to help them gather information etc. The messages that this documentary put across are both eye opening and concerning. I do believe what they speak on to be important topics. Technology does indeed manipulate you to continue scrolling, watching, liking, upvoting and sharing something. It is what they are built to do. It almost felt like an advert for the very thing it was trying to discourage.

Movie Review

The Truman Show (1998) - Film & Photography L3 Y2 Unit 10 – Truth and Fiction –

The Truman show is an American Phycological drama in which an Insurance salesman discovers his whole life, since birth, he has been the star of a tv show. The name Truman is a play on the words true man. Truman Burbank (Jim Carey) lives his life unknown to the fact he is being watched by millions of people all over the world through thousands of cameras hidden throughout his job, home, car and where he lives. With everyone he knows being hired actors, his whole life is a fabricated lie and the entire island “Seahaven” he lives on just an overpriced set piece with him being the main character. Living in his own personally tailored simulation/ reality.

One of the most popular lines from the movie is:

“Good morning! And in case I don’t see you, Good Afternoon, Good Evening and Good Night!”

Throughout the movie, there are attempts to shoe Truman that the is in a tv show. This however is quickly covered up by people on set or written off as a dream or a psychotic break. one example of this is when Truman’s college girlfriend tries to tell him that he is on a tv show and reveals her identity. She is quickly taken away and written off the show as being schizophrenic and having delusions. The main reason why Truman discovers he is in a tv show / simulation of life is that one day leaving his house for work a set light had fallen and narrowly missed his car, while on the way to his work the radio broadcast covered it up as a piece from an aircraft flying over head that has shed parts. one day the decided to take an elevator in a building he had never been in before (of which he had seen other people use) and there had not been an elevator car but more of a green room for actors and staff. As the story progresses his wife tells Truman that his behaviours is worrying, a later altercation between him and his wife leave the studio staff worried for both Truman and his wife and send a friend to break up their argument. Truman later learns the truth of his life so far and decides to sail out of the island where the studio turn on the waves and try to drown him (similar to the story arc of his father passing away.) Where he makes it through and gets to the edge of the island and leaves. This movie gives us an idea of how the media and cameras can manipulate the truth of something. Through subliminal messaging they can somewhat persuade Truman into doing and saying certain things. As well as purposefully causing traumatic events to discourage him from doing something or making him repress the memories that go along with it. the events in the movie prompt the viewer to think of things like the questions of do we really have free will? Is this reality really what it is or a fantasy? What a controlled environment can do to a person/ human experiment. The truth and consequences of your own tailored life/ existence/ simulation. Is anything Truman did within the duration of the film (including his escape) of his own free will? How much subliminal messaging was he subject to? How much manipulation was he subjected to? and as a people how much have we been persuaded/ changed buy what we consume (media , film tv, news)?

UAL Level 2 Creative Media FMP- Experimental Film - Nostalgia

For this piece I had wanted to create the feeling of nostalgia, contentment or reminiscence. I wanted to create a feeling of contentment and nostalgia for the person watching, as if to remind them of their own memories, family friends and people the hold close to them.

A reason for doing this project was to explore and develop my work style, art style, acting techniques, editing style and to broaden my knowledge on different styles and methods.

Experimental Animation short - The Consequence Of Being

I wanted to create this piece to enhance my understanding of audiences and the importance of selecting a target audience, and to understand the importance of social platforms that can make my work reach more of an audience / my target audience. The importance of social media and Communication. I had used Adobe After Effects cc 2020 using YouTube tutorials I had learned the basics of keyframes. I had learned how to use them regarding motion, anchor, scale and rotation. In some aspects I do believe this could be a type of thriller movie/ short. As is shows the day by day decay of man during isolation. I did not complete my initial idea of the chains on the floor and around the figures ankles however I did do some other experiments inspired by movie scenes and I did re-design the character for one of the last experiments.

A thing I would set out to improve is the motion of the body when it goes to sit in the corner of the room. Instead of the body going down when the character sits I would instead have the character move toward the floor when sitting as the animation / motion for this is unrealistic.

As covid hit hard this year I did not have as much of an opportunity as I would have liked to create short films/ experimental films. While being instructed to stay at home throughout the pandemic i still had to produce some work.

“Memento – Mori” – Latin phrase translating to “Remember you must die”. Memento Mori is usually something pictured as a skull representing, serving a reminder of death and morality or the inevitability of death. Symbolic or artistic An artistic interpretation of what Memento- Mori would be an assortment of skulls or items drawn painted and or photographed. Immortalised in time.

As covid hit hard this year I did not have as much of an opportunity as I would have liked to create short films/ experimental films. While being instructed to stay at home throughout the pandemic i still had to produce some work. These self portrait photos are from a shoot I did to do with my Truth and Fiction unit, I had wanted to create a short film as a memento-mori but did not have the recourses to do so.
