Why are some people allergic to Maine Coons and not others?

There is a protein called Fel d1. This is the “real” problem. Fel d1 is found in all cats. It’s in their saliva, glands, and urine. When cats groom themselves by licking their fur they spread this protein around there bodies. They also leave it behind when they urinate.

There are cat breeds that produce less of the Fel d1 allergy-causing protein. Unfortunately, the Maine Coon cat is not considered one of them.

But, the protein varies from one cat to another. A person’s reaction to this protein may vary as well. And there are countless stories of pet owners becoming immune to their own pet over time while still having allergies to all other cats. Strange, but true.

Why Are Maine Coon Cats Not Hypoallergenic?

Hypoallergenic DOESN’T mean it doesn’t cause allergic reactions. It simply means it’s Breed is LESS LIKELY to cause allergic reactions. Unfortunately, Maine Coon cats produce the normal healthy amount of Fel d1. It may be healthy for cats but not so much for us allergy sufferers!

The allergy suffering you experience is not from the hair, but from this protein, a substance found in saliva and urine. Hair and dander help spread the protein, but even hairless cats will cause an allergic reaction in susceptible individuals.

The good news is that there is a beautiful long haired large cat that is considered by its breeders to be hypoallergenic for most people.

I’ve heard of some people attempting to crossbreed Maine Coons to try to make them more hypoallergenic but their quite pricey so just do your research. And there are no guarantees!

The best approach is to visit the kitten and her parents. Spend a good amount of time in the same room that they spend most of their time and see if you have any reactions.

If not a Maine Coon Cat then what alternatives?

However, many people who have cat allergies experience no problems with certain breeds.

Recent scientific studies suggest that Siberian, Abyssinian, Devon Rex, Balinese, and Cornish Rex cats produce less of the protein causing your reaction than that of other breeds.

Out of these breeds, the Siberians are the most similar to Maine Coons.

Maine Coon vs Siberian

Both breeds are very old breeds. This is a good thing because nature produced them and that means they are hardy with fewer health issues. Humans have only recently begun to breed them for colors and sizes. Their adaptation to the wild has made them healthy and very large cats who live very long lives.

These two breeds are known for their very calm nature and are super intelligent! They both seem to love water and snow. They have both been described to be more dog-like. They are great with kids. They love to play and are talkative. They walk on a harness and love to be with people.

Maine Coons are double-coated. Siberians are triple coated. They both have thick longhair coats and large paws.

The Maine Coon breed is considered the largest house cat breed. However, the Siberian takes 2nd place. There will be many variations from cat to cat. It is possible to find small Maine Coons and larger Siberians.

However, Siberians will give you a chance of NOT having an allergic reaction.

We would rate these cats as a 4 out of 5.

No cat is Allergy Free, but Siberian cats are known to trigger less allergic reactions than most other breeds. Actually, Siberian Cats could be considered truly hypoallergenic. The definition of hypoallergenic is having a decreased tendency to provoke an allergic reaction. And these cats certainly have a decreased tendency versus other breeds.

So, are Siberian cats hypoallergenic?

Unfortunately, there is really no such thing as a 100% hypoallergenic or allergy-free cat. But, many cat allergy sufferers are not having any issues with Siberians.

How Hypoallergenic Are Siberian Cats?

Hypoallergenic really means that the cats are LESS LIKELY to give you an allergic reaction. The truth is each Siberian is different and each person with allergies is different.

Some breeders claim that as much as 75 percent of cat allergy sufferers have no or little reaction to the Siberian Breed.

Latest Siberian Allergy test findings

A large amount of research has been done specifically on Siberian Cats. Specific tests have been developed to isolate the allergy-causing protein known as Fel d1.

The allergen level does vary by line of cats, by intact or neutered, and by age.

The bottom line, roughly 50% of Siberians were found to have low levels of Fel d1. And around 15% were found to have very low levels. These particular Siberians could be placed with families who have severe reactions to cats.

They also discovered that silver or smoke colored Siberians had higher levels of the protein. So, avoiding these colors would be wise. Also, females and males who have been neutered show less of the protein.

Despite these tests according to most Breeders, Approximately 95% of the people that come out to test themselves with an actual Siberian have little or no reaction.

If you are considering this, It is best to test with the actual Siberian that you are getting. Or with the parents of the kitten.

Why are some people allergic to Siberian cats and not others?

Individual cats will vary in how much Fl d1 they produce. There are actually 4 proteins that may cause a reaction. Fl d1 is the most problematic.

At this time no cat is 100% allergy-free!

Always spend time with a potential SIbereian adoptee! Decide for yourself it a particular cat works with your particular allergy. You may find that you are fine with one Siberian and not with another. Spending time with a kitten’s parents will help you determine what it may be like once it grows up.

Are Siberian cat mixes hypoallergenic

There are many breeders who are attempting to cross-breed Siberians with other breeds to make a more hypoallergenic version.

As you now know from research it is impossible to know how the results will turn out. The only way to be sure is to test yourself with the actual cat and her parents.

Siberian Siamese mixes called Neva Masquerade are not true Siberians. However, the Siamese are considered Hypoallergenic as well. Tests have shown that these gray cats are surprisingly less hypoallergenic. So, be careful and spend time with the cat. A true Siberian will not have a Siamese like coloring.

Is a Siberian kitten more hypoallergenic than an adult?

Actually yes, getting a kitten is what we recommend for allergy sufferers. The kittens have less allergen and you have time for your body to adapt before they become adults. Allergies are odd and people can often build up a tolerance

What can be done?

There are ways for people with allergies to live with cats. Both allergy medication and cleaning will help. I take allergy shots and they work for me and I’m exposed to cats on a daily basis.

Should I Get A Siberian Fur sample or Visit A Siberian Breeder

Don’t try to judge a cat by its fur sample. The fur itself is not the source of your allergy. I would suggest that you try several breeders near you. See if you or your family have any allergic symptoms when you visit. Keep your visits a week or two apart so there is time to recover between the cats.

However, I saw something in the news a while back. A research project to test this idea of overcoming allergies. The scientists were gradually adding peanut products to the diets of people who were very allergic. Everything was done in a controlled environment and doctors were on hand.

They started out with very tiny amounts and slowly increased to larger and larger amounts. Surprisingly the results were very promising. Based on this evidence and the countless stories people tell, it would appear that it is possible! But, it is not recommended without doctor supervision. Especially, if your allergy is severe.

How long does it take?

Results and the time it takes will vary from person to person. Slowly increasing exposure has quickly removed the allergy for some and for others it had no effect. Some are able to build immunity and some never do.

I have a friend who has had cat allergies his whole life. His girlfriend convinced him to try to build his immunity so they adopted a cat. They now have 5 cats! He’s not complaining. You would assume he’d be in torment night and day. This happened relatively quickly for him. I would say less than a year.

What are the risks to exposure therapy?

What can happen, although it is rare, as you live with the allergen, your allergies can get worse. And in extreme cases, you can do actual damage to your body. You could end up with an autoimmune disorder or lung problems.

So, this is something that should be planned out with your allergist.

However, there are safe solutions. How to build immunity to cat allergies? With the right cat, you may not have any issues!

Is there such a thing as a hypoallergenic cat?

A specific protein is shed in a cat’s saliva, urine and comes out in skin secretions. The protein is called “Fel d1” and is transmitted to the fur during grooming. It is not the fur that causes your reaction but it is the protein. The saliva dries and then disperses everywhere as very fine particles.

The severity of your cat allergy will vary from cat to cat.

Each cat is unique. Whether the breeder claims it to be hypoallergenic or not. This protein is produced in all cats. Hypoallergenic cats produce less. However, it varies from cat to cat. And so your symptoms can vary from cat to cat.

Just because you may have had no negative reaction from a specific Breed does not mean that all cats in that breed can be tolerated.

So, the simple way to deal with this is by trial and error. You need to get around the cat that you are planning to bring home. Test yourself out with the kitten and her parents.

You will be injected with the offending allergens in gradual doses. Your body will eventually build up an immunity against them and you will no longer be affected. If you do not like the idea of shots there is an alternative that you just put in your mouth.
