I love the way TMNT is retold and rearranged with each iteration like a modern day folktale, but I do think Mirage and 87 have a certain charm that comes with being the first. Technically 87 was the second, but it came so early and was aimed at such a different demographic that I don't feel like it was ever really limited by what Mirage had chosen to do.

Everything since has been dealing with a legacy - with two separate legacies. With questions of what the fans will expect and be angry to not get as well as questions of which things they want to use and which they want to discard.

#mhm #The question of how to please the old fans #but also how to make something new with each iteration #and considering how different each iteration is I’d say they usually succeed on that front #because why make something new if you’re just going to mimic something that already exists #But then you get homage and Easter eggs #The core elements ( t m n and t) are so outlandish to start with that they can be adapted to wildly different styles and stories

There is an accidental trend in my tmnt fanart. Its almost as if... many of my fondest childhood memories were spent playing games with my siblings. The rise & 03 ones have been posted before, I just wanted them all together.

The turtles who are more free to roam would possess certain social skills that their stealthier counterparts wouldn't. I mean all the turtles can improv and do disguises, but the rise and 87 kids can walk through a crowded shopping mall and do something about it if someone gets their order wrong. Like

1987 Donatello: Hey listen, plot convenience can only take us so far. This is a really specialized part, I gotta talk to the shop owner

2003 Raph: Okay, no problem. We'll be in and out before anyone sees us. You just focus on finding the shop owner, I got your back.

1987 Donatello: I'm pretty sure he'll just be at the counter.

Raph: You put me through this for a wrench?!

Donatello: I had to make sure it was the correct size. Besides, you were fine, the lady behind you in line loved telling you about her home repairs.

Raph: I can't believe we stood in line for ten minutes.

Donatello: Oh that's nothing, last week I waited almost thirty minutes

Ones hands can tell the story of how they’ve lived… and how far they have come.

I’m a sucker for Good Dad Splinter ever since I watched TMNT ‘03. That rat was gifted sapience and his immediate instinct was kindness. I love that for him.

Rise Splinter lived a rollercoaster of a life, but as a Hollywood star he remembered the names of all his stunt guys and coworkers, and as a prisoner he cared for the rat that shared his cell. His sons are very close and physically affectionate, I think that says something about how he cares? That’s just how I like to headcanon him :)

It’s interesting to explore the idea that a seemingly monstrous transformation is what pushed him to be a kinder human
