Severus: Okay, it’s a small pond. There’s cold water in it, but it’s not too deep. Diving the sword is really easy, but uncomfortable enough for it to be considered ‘Gryffindor bravery’. It’s incredibly simple. It’s not dangerous. Easier than almost anything Potter’s done. There’s really no way this could go wrong.
Harry: *Almost chokes, drowns and dies*
Severus: …

Pretty sure it’s already been said here before, but it seems like people don’t know what to do with morally gray characters and can only characterize them as the worst people imaginable even though there’s no actual evidence to support those claims 😅 I know I read and write Snape smut and fluff on here, but when it comes to discussions about his role as a character in the series, I can recognize he’s not just good or bad, black or white.
You’re allowed to dislike a character for things they’ve actually done. You can dislike or hate Snape for being a dick towards his students, calling Lily a Mudblood, threatening to kill Neville’s toad, and just being generally unpleasant. Even if you think that his main motivation for turning to the light side wasn’t good or strong enough, that’s fine, too. The problem is that some people extrapolate the actual events in the text to create a narrative that doesn’t exist.
Sure, it’d be interesting if Snape were truly an incel, but then that wouldn’t be Snape as we know him; that’d be some other character. It’s cool to think about hypotheticals, but they can be meaningless when discussing a piece of media’s themes and messages.
People are quick to label Snape an incel because his love was one-sided, he continued to think about her years after she died, his patronus was the same as Lily’s, he told Harry he has his mother’s eyes before dying, etc. However, one-sided love does not make someone an incel. Incels are typically misogynistic and lack the self-awareness to realize they are the problem, which don’t apply to Snape. His love for Lily was also coupled with guilt and remorse.
You do also have to understand the setting and context in which he lived. If he lived in real life in today’s time with access to proper support and care but just didn’t want to become better, then you could argue there’s no excuse for his behavior. But he was born in the ‘60s, grew up in a poor family with a Muggle father, was grouped with people who were deemed to be evil, didn’t have anyone except for one person who truly cared for him, and was led to join a cult that he thought would give him some sort of power and a sense of belonging. As many people have said, not everyone who goes through major trauma is a perfect victim who learns to be nice and empathetic towards everyone.
So, it’s okay to despise Snape, but your feelings should at least be based in what has been described in the books. You can write fanfiction about how he’s an incel who’s evil at heart as long as you understand that is not canon.

Hi. Does anyone know of a fic where Snape for x-reason uses the sword of Godric Gryffindor or is said to have Gryffindor traits in front of a good amount of people?
I just want chaos.
The idea of the hat considering your traits, but also the ones you most value is something I like. There are lots of opinions about Snape and the marauders and I think they are all right and wrong at the same time. All of them did a lot of shity things and some had more chances in life than others. Snape, in my opinion, had it hard but also burned many bridges with his own hands.
Ultimately I find his character more interesting, so is there any fic like this? I like Bamf!Snape. I don't mind pairings all that much but I'd rather for it not to be with Lily. It's nothing against her, simply don't really like the pairing.
Just, some people realising their own bias and misconceptions and freaking out. I can also picture Snape internaly freaking out and watching the sword/sorting hat as if it had personally insulted him (the hat probably did).

“Snape only wanted to spare Lily. He was obsessed with her 😡”
My goodness, when he heard the prophecy he didn’t even know what it could be referring to because it was so vague. Then when he realized Voldy thought it was referring to Lily and her son, he asked Voldy to spare her and then rushed to Dumbledore to ask the same thing. Asking Voldy to spare all of them wouldn’t have made any sense because 1) he was evil and did whatever tf he wanted, 2) the prophecy already stated Harry had to die, and 3) why tf would he have cared about James, who harassed him for years?
Dumbledore then told Snape that Snape disgusts him for only begging to save Lily, so Snape asked him to save them all and said he’d do anything in return.
That scene is meant to highlight how sad and pathetic Snape was. He was experiencing a lot of emotional distress. And tbh he had every right to resent Lily for marrying the guy who tormented him for years (and maybe he did), but he still wanted to do anything to keep her alive. Sure, he didn’t know who the prophecy was referring to, but once he knew Voldemort was going to target her, he realized just how much he fucked up. At that point, they weren’t friends for many years, but that doesn’t mean he wanted her to die like that.
It’s easy to say he should’ve asked to save all of them, but I bet anyone in a similar situation would be focused on the person they knew and cared for most, especially when there isn’t much time left and you’re dealing with a sick freak who does whatever they want. No one would be in the right headspace.

Dark art is like drugs.
1: Most people see them as bad things, so people involved with them are bad.
2: Some of them are socially acceptable. Alcohol or cigarettes are socially acceptable, as are Jinx and Hex.
3: When "nice people" are involved with them, it is okay. It's ok for high-class people to drink expensive wine, but it's not ok for working-class people to drink cheap alcohol. It's ok for the marauders to throw hex around, but it's not ok for Snape to invent some curse.
4: They can be useful. We use some drugs as medicine.
5: People who study them don't need to want to use them.
6: They are alluring for people who feel abandoned, want to control things, etc.

There are so many things wrong with the HP series (the slavery allegory, naming of POC—and non-English characters more generally—antisemitic tropes with the goblins, transphobia with Rita Skeeter, etc.) but you also have to remember that this is a fictional story meant to highlight certain themes. With Snape in particular, the messages are
Love trumps hate, and even those who seem to have no hope can come out of the dark side. He could’ve despised Lily for marrying his abuser, but he didn’t; he always remembered her for the good she did for him. He was mean but still cared for the students’ physical safety. He didn’t care about others liking him or getting recognition for his efforts as long as he could save as many people as possible.
Trauma manifests in different ways for different people. Yes, Snape honestly was not qualified to be a teacher despite his in-depth knowledge of potions and took his hatred of James out on Harry who wasn’t even raised by him, but there wouldn’t have been a story to tell if Snape went to therapy and learned to deal with his issues. Snape is not meant to be likable, pleasant, or enjoyable. You’re supposed to think he’s an unfair asshole.
Cults prey on and groom the most vulnerable people. Snape was a poor half-blood. Even though Slytherin’s traits aren’t inherently evil, at the time, it was full of wealthy blood supremacists. He was likely neglected at best and abused at worst by his parents, and he lost his best friend. He had no one, so who was he going to associate with? Certainly not the other houses who think everyone in Slytherin is evil. It’s normal for a teen to want to be accepted and liked by their own “kind” (even though he was never going to be fully accepted by many of his peers). In real life, we are starting to see how teenage boys are going down the red pill path because of how men in those sphere influence them, for example (this is a whole other topic for another day, though.)
I also just hate how in general people create these holier-than-thou arguments online; you can state your reasons for being for or against something, but at least provide actual evidence to support your claims. And yes, while this is a children’s book, it is still worthy of discussion (for being problematic but also having certain messages). I really hate the term “Snape apologists” because of its resemblence to an actual term (if you know what I’m talking about), but also like, I am simply using textual evidence to support my stance.
From what people have said, too, the whole “Snape was obsessed with Lily” thing only became popular recently; once all the books were released, people understood the message the author was trying to convey through Snape (correct me if I’m wrong, though!)
At the end of the day, Snape is a fictional character, an object if you will. People are allowed to love or hate him (or any character for that matter). Just don’t be an asshole toward *actual* people with different opinions.

For me it's matter how people react on Snape and how they think about that character.
Snape is a victim of abuse, who was ruined by that abuse mentaly. And when people think that he deserve hatred and death and so on, and think that the fact that he was unpleasant is more important than that he saved many people's lives and because the first he can't be forgiven, I wish to those people to get some real life experience. For real. I saw how people who love to use word "problematic" participated in dehumanization of real vulnerable people, so for me it's really importan if people understand how trauma can change human's behavior and how people react on things when they are in trouble.
So yes, I can judge people based on how they treat fictional character. Real people they treat even worse.

Okay, so I’m a bit wine drunk but I don’t think I’ve ever really articulated why I love Snarry together and I’m currently trying to finish a fic after taking a three-year-hiatus from writing these two, so this is probably a good exercise!
I’m a bit on the older side of fandom, having been a fanartist and fervent reader since 2003, so my connection was really sparked during that time between OOTP and HBP when Snape and Harry were at some of their most clashing and deeply vitriolic, forced together into hateful vulnerability by Occulmency lessons. Every scene between them was electric, laced with tension as we truly did not know how things would go, or even where Snape’s true loyalties lay. He was an unknown, tied up with Harry’s own family’s mysterious past, connected to Harry in a myriad of odd ways that few other characters were, and - as a rivals-to-lovers lover - I was fascinated by him. From that first moment when they lock eyes in the Great Hall and that frisson of pain shoots through Harry’s scar, I desperately wanted to know who the hell this man was and his story. I think a lot of Snarry shippers come to the ship with a special appreciation for Severus Snape’s character himself. He’s such an incredibly drawn character, rich with complexity, complicated and pretty fucked up, with clearly-held passions, hatreds, weaknesses, and motivations. He’s emotional in a way a lot of other characters aren’t, though I think he’d loathe to hear that. And his character voice! It’s unique and pitch-perfect. You always know exactly who is speaking with his lines. Honestly, the way he evolved from a spy/traitor stock character to become so multifaceted and enigmatic is a masterpiece of characterization, and it’s an aspect of why I’m drawn to him - there’s still so much about his origins and well, what his damage was, that we don’t know. Because of this, I especially love Snarry fics that delve into character studies of him, trying to explore all the shadows left behind. I also admit I have a preference for interpreting Snape as morally grey. I like him petty, sharp-tongued, ambitious, with an incredibly liquid definition of what is right and wrong. He’s self-interested, dripping with disdain, and really doesn’t see that as a problem. What happens to him when he deeply falls in love?
I love a ship that makes me work for it. There’s no obvious line of how Snape and Harry might wind up together, so each fic is a wealth of possibilities of bringing these two together despite their roadblocks. As I mentioned, I’m big fan of animosity in a ship. Give me rivals, give me enemies, give me the sparking passions, the sharp fury, the way they stoke each others’ emotions and seek to hurt, the racing hearts, the raised hackles, the intense emotional reaction to another person. Just throw it at me. I devour that shit. I love the messy and taboo nature of their relationship, the complications raising from their age difference, temperaments, and largely similar and shared traumas. There’s an interesting element of Snape being a foil to James Potter, and how that relates to Harry and their past. Basically, this shit is really good potting soil for incredible fucking fics, packed with nutrients.
The shared natures of their traumas, like Voldemort and each being forgotten and abused as children and how they might be able to understand each other and bond from it is also something that’s fascinating to explore. I love when a writer pushes on Snape’s bruises, looking to make them hurt, cracking his sardonic brain open and rooting around in there, and I love when they compare and contrast to Harry’s. There’s a seductiveness to how Snape is so obsessed with Harry, fixated on his Boy Who Lived heroic reputation, clearly dripping with envy. What, beyond jealousy, might draw Snape to Harry and what, other than hatred, might draw Harry to Snape?
It’s all this, the passionate, electric, dangerous nature of their relationship; the way their characters contrast each other yet have surprising connections; and the question of finding solace that keeps me here, 21 years later. I’ve had wines less complex than this ship. They’re fascinating. They’re messy. They’re everything.
