Oh how the happiest people seem happy in their grief. They do not wish for others to be dragged down, so they grieve in silence. They do not wish to be a burden, so they do not ask for help. They do not wish to be pushed away, so they attempt to be happy for others. Oh how the happiest people, really aren’t happy at all.

There was a slight release of tension, and Mei really thought Marcella was going to leave. Maybe it was for the best. This answer-seeking journey was turning into Mei’s questioning. She almost wanted to scream, ‘I’m not guilty!’ But then she remembered that she hadn’t done anything wrong except ruin this woman’s ‘peace’.
Marcella looked over to Mei, asked her several inquiries, and Mei blinked a few times in an attempt to clear her muddled mind, “I’m curious because this thing you did to my brain is not typical. Sure, some people carry around extremely strong emotions and transfer them to me, but they don’t confuse me with an unsolvable jumble like you did. And I don’t know if it is a defense mechanism you possess or if it is genetic or if you’re just really strong. I’m not sure. I’m not sure if that classifies as pure curiosity or not, but that’s why I came. As for the meddling, I technically am always in everyone’s mind if that counts as meddling. If you are referring to physically coming up to people, that’s a firm no. I don’t approach people as often as you might think. I prefer to watch, listen, and feel. That’s all. Is that sufficient?”
She didn’t usually attack when she was in a disagreement with someone, but she was beginning to feel annoyed at the questions being fed to her. She wasn’t a suspect being worn down by the cop to confess. There was nothing to confess.

“I suppose.” Zachariah mused, but didn’t comment...
He didn’t talk for a while, so Mei filled the time with small sips of her drink. He seemed like he was gathering his thoughts, and time might be the thing he needed at the moment. She thought of how easy it would be to start suggesting an emotion and work it into his conscience, but she quickly dismissed the idea. Unless it was an emergency, she never used that aspect of her gift.
Finally, he asked her a question, and she silently exhaled a breath, “Yeah! I try to perform here as often as needed. Living here your whole life kinda gives you an advantage when it comes to finding a new job. If everyone knows you already, they aren’t as afraid to hire you when that time of need comes around.” She didn’t expand any further since she had no idea how much he really wanted to know about her career.
“Ah. I wouldn’t know. Are they as wonderful as they are difficult?” she smiled a bit, hoping he wouldn’t take it offensively.

Mei shrugged her shoulders, “Yeah. For the most part.” Remembering certain people was slightly painful for her. The clearest ones were those that she had gained access to through touching one of their possessions. The memory attached to them wasn’t always the most pleasant, and because they were the clearest, they also were the strongest. Although, Mei’s brief encounter of the one who had come into this bar earlier was definitely high on her list of most excruciating minds she’d come into contact with.
Breaking her train of thought, Natalia’s response made Mei’s mouth upturn into a smirk, “It can definitely be hard to cope at times, but my experience has for sure made it easier to, as you said, deal with it.” Mei pursed her lips and nodded her head in conclusion. Though she didn’t always see her abilities as the gifts her parents insisted they were, she knew they were handy to have at certain times. For example, the other day, she had had a customer who came to the bookstore, anger and sadness radiating off of him, and she simply touched his shoulder and said, “It’ll be okay.” Her voice was laced with as much reassurance as she could muster. She gave him a small smile that he reciprocated only a few seconds later. She felt his mood change slightly, and she thought for a moment that maybe it wasn’t a great idea to be suggesting feelings to other people. It didn’t seem fair to them. Before she could wallow too deeply in that thought, he asked her about where the fantasy section was in the store, and swiftly lead him to where he wanted to be.
“I have no complaints either. I’ve been living a very full life, but, wondering how everything as it is now could’ve been something else,” Mei paused briefly, searching for the right words, “baffles me sometimes.”

Mei had never truly understood the feeling of ‘deafening silence’ until Marcella had paused their conversation after her question. It was crazy how uneasy Mei felt, but she pushed the feeling as far down as possible. It was an unneeded emotion at that point in time, and she knew that. The moment Marcella spoke again, Mei was at attention, intently absorbing everything she said.
In the short time Mei had become acquainted with Marcella, she had learned that attempting to speak over her would be a mistake. Marcella didn’t waste time articulating unnecessary words, so tuning anything out would result in missing whatever she had spoken of. She was also very blunt and honest. In her case, both would be considered positive traits. Mei couldn’t feel upset or hurt by her words because they were true.
Mei waited until Marcella was finished talking before speaking, “That is sufficient. Thank you.” And interesting, she didn’t add. That was a lot of pent up rage. Hurt, anger, and sadness. Those were the strongest of the feelings. Every time she felt someone with those emotions, she internally reeled or felt a light blow to the chest - it had never been pleasant. Feeling as much anger as Marcella was... Mei felt the harsh prodding of Marcella’s rage against her skull and gave it a gentle shove back down where she’d hidden it before.
She felt as if she had just completed an awful job interview, but she felt awkward having been the only one who asked any questions, so she offered Marcella the same opportunity, “Is there anything about me you’d like to know?”

“Precisely!” Mei exclaimed, “You know, it isn’t that big of a deal that they left. I’ll be able to find them again. Another cool aspect of my abilities is that I have the emotional imprint from everyone I come into contact with. An emotional imprint is kind of like a fingerprint - totally unique to that person - but instead of their DNA being shown to me, I feel their emotions.” Mei paused with a knit brow and thumb under her chin and tried to explain in a clear way, “Everyone feels in a different way, and once I get their imprint, I have it stowed away in here,” she finished, tapping her head, “If that makes sense.”
Mei nodded along with Natalia’s words. It wasn’t too difficult to follow what she was saying, and it gave her a much better understanding of who Natalia was as a person, “That’s incredibly interesting.” Mei wanted to pry and ask more, however, she didn’t want to overstep her boundaries. They’d only just met after all. She was already worried she’d been asking too many questions this entire time. Honestly, Mei was surprised and thankful Natalia had uttered responses in the first place.
Mei’s eyes widened with understanding at Natalia’s final comment, “Oh yeah, definitely. Just like everything else in this world, there are pros and cons to everything. I think it’s fun to imagine how drastically different my life would be if one quality or one thing in general was different from how it is now. It can be terrifying and exciting all at the same time.”

‘’I want to talk.’’ Savannah’s lip curled back, as...
Mei’s eyes widened at the other woman’s outburst, but she let her finish before replying, “Wow. I’d hate to see you in one of your moods.” Mei internally winced at herself. Probably not the wisest thing to say.
Hoping the woman didn’t catch her slip-up, Mei quickly changed the subject, “Do you need a ride to the hospital? Or something? I can take you there.”
Suddenly, finding out the details about why this woman causes an emotional overload didn’t seem so important. Mei didn’t know what she was supposed to do. At first, Mei thought she was okay, but the longer she felt the woman’s feelings, the more Mei began to think otherwise. If she didn’t get medical attention soon, she could get an infection or fall incredibly ill.
“I’m just saying,” Mei continued, “I think you could really benefit from seeing a doctor.”

erosmccoy reblogged your post “erosmccoy: He didn’t particularly pay heed to others, not much ...”
Mei’s eyebrows lifted upwards at his response, “Ah. I see. Charming,” she smirked, “Well, I am not lost, and do not need your help.”
She saw the flicker of his eyes toward the information desk and turned over to find a nasty glare being given to him. Looking back to Eros, Mei poked her head at the person the glare belonged to, “I’ll put in a good word for you about your generosity and helpfulness,” Mei said sarcastically with a wink before turning back around to the rows of books.
Something about him made Mei feel like they’d be good friends. He was honest, and that was always something Mei admired in every person. Sometimes, Mei chose to be the nice one rather than the honest one, and in her experience, that’s not a good quality to have all the time.
She continued to peruse through the fiction section, pondering the thought of actually borrowing something or just leaving and choosing a book from home. She had made a point that the library had a ton of books she’d never read.

shirazimarcella reblogged your post “shirazimarcella reblogged your post “All Marcella knew was that there...”
This was quite possibly the scariest encounter with another person Mei had ever gone through, and she wasn’t going to deny that. Marcella was the type of woman Mei had always feared but respected deeply. However, at the moment, she felt two emotions: strength and terror. The terror was how she, as Mei, personally felt, but the strength came from Marcella. She tried to draw on that feeling while keeping the onslaught she’d been repressing at bay. It was difficult, but she managed to do it. This woman could hit Mei with her best shot because she was going to do the same.
Mei cocked her head to the side when Marcella mentioned an interrogation. Thinking about it further, Mei could more or less agree with the statement. This newfound strength made her feel like her past interactions with Marcella could be overlooked once she said her piece now, “Yes, they’re mirrored emotions, but with most people I encounter, there are simple feelings I face such as happiness, sadness, anger - stuff like that. With you, it’s just an explosion. I can’t feel each thing individually,” Mei sighed, “I wouldn’t have come over here and bothered you if I had had the answer already. I’m not that type of person.” It was obvious Marcella wasn’t going to shine any light on Mei’s predicament, so Mei tried a final thought, “I understand that you don’t want to talk to a stranger about your emotions. That’s completely logical. But do you have any idea where I can find out why your emotions are so heightened in my mind compared to everyone else?” Mei quickly added, “I’ll get out of your hair as soon as you answer this. If that is, in fact, what you want.”
It was a shot in the dark, but it was one that may hit it’s mark... or not.

lyranatalia reblogged your post “lyranatalia reblogged your post “Target eliminated and body disposed...” Mei nodded slowly at Natalia’s explanation. It made sense. Natalia was an observer and fearless. Mei couldn’t help but feel a slight admiration towards her. How incredible would it be to possess such strength. However, her dismissive manner made Mei feel unwelcome which she expected was the goal Natalia had in mind. She wanted Mei to leave, and honestly, Mei didn’t know how much else she was going to get out of the other woman.
Mei shook her head this time in response to Natalia, “Nope. No one was waiting for my company. It would have been me initiating a conversation with a stranger. As I said before, I was actually being bombarded by someone’s emotions when I came this way, but a little bit a go, the feelings ceased. They must’ve left.”
Mei’s eyebrows crinkled when Natalia asked if being apathetic really was an anomaly, and Mei responded with what she knew, “Oh yes, it’s very unusual - at least for the people I encounter every day.” Natalia’s next words affirmed Mei’s suspicions of being unwanted company. The second part of her comment made Mei tilt her head and look away from Natalia, “I can’t imagine not always feeling constant emotion. I’ve thought about it before though - what it would be like to not feel anything, for once,” Mei refocused her vision onto Natalia, “Have you ever thought about what it would be like to feel everything?”

zachariahbeckett reblogged your post and added: “@zachariahbeckett Zachariah had forgotten about the performances that...”
Zachariah still hadn’t ordered a drink when he...
It was increasingly getting harder to suppress the man’s emotions from overtaking hers, but she pushed a bit harder and attempted not to focus too much on his brain.
“It’s nice to meet you, Zachariah,” Mei smiled.
Upon his prompting, Mei ordered a ginger ale. She wasn’t a big drinker, plus it was even more difficult to keep control under the influence. Unlike many others, Mei didn’t become numb to emotions if she drank alcohol, they became heightened. She’d learned that the hard way on her 21st birthday with a bunch of her friends. Needless to say, not her best birthday night. There was a lot of sudden mood changes: one minute she’d be dancing on the tables, the happiest woman alive, and the next she would be sobbing in a booth over literally nothing. She’d gone home early and immediately crashed on her couch, head pounding ferociously.
“I’d love to keep you company,” she took a sip of her ginger ale before continuing, “My part of the show is over, so I’m free to do as I please.”
Mei hesitated before speaking up again, “What brings you here tonight?”

ronaniolani reblogged your post and added: “People could say what they wanted about Ithaca, but music...”
Ronan nodded, a cordial smile on his face as he...
Mei returned the smile with a grin of her own, “Wow. Dishing out all the compliments, aren’t you?” she joked, then seriously added, “Thank you. Ronan is a pretty epic name, too. Literally. It sounds like it needs to be in an epic. What’s the story behind that?”
Ithaca, if it was widely known, would be notorious for unusual names. That was a double-edged sword in Mei’s opinion because on one hand, friends would be easily distinguished, but on the other, learning the names in the first place was extremely difficult.
Ronan. Ronan. Ronan.
Maybe if she said it enough times, it would lock in her brain. The only thing she knew for sure she’d remember was his emotional print - the unique brain “fingerprint” that only belonged to him. She’d almost forgotten what she came to ask, but he had already proposed a question before she could beat him to it. If she was being completely honest, it was nice to talk about something other than her abilities.
Mei nodded before answering him, “Yeah! I’ve lived here in Ithaca my whole life, and when I decided to pursue a musical career, this place took me in and helped me ‘take off’.” She used her fingers as air quotes when she said ‘take off’. She didn’t really know if being known in her own small town counted as ‘taking off’, but without this opportunity, she wouldn’t have been playing any shows at all. They deserved at least some credit.

Sun. Mei had always loved it. It reminded her of the beautiful days during summer vacation when she’d ride her bicycle around Ithaca - to nowhere in particular. She would pedal through the streets and parks soaking up as many rays as possible before curling up with a book at the library on the windowsill overlooking the entirety of downtown Ithaca. For her, that was the ultimate dream day, perfect for relaxing.
Today was one of those days.
The park was spotted with several trees that kissed the clear, blue sky and was filled with small stands for various things - homemade jewelry, random foods, fruits, vegetables - a multitude of choices. The marketplace had been there for longer than Mei can remember. As a child, her mother would always bring her on trips to the market to buy fresh fruits and vegetables, and sometimes, if she was good, she could pick something out for herself.
While perusing the jewelry, Mei’s gaze wandered toward the vegetable stand where a young woman, maybe a few years younger than Mei was standing patiently. Honing her abilities in on the woman, Mei opened herself up to the feelings of the woman and instantly felt happier than she already was. One of the best perks of being an Empath was being able to share the joys of others completely. She felt, at that moment, completely content. Unfocusing, Mei bought the necklace she’d been pondering getting since the week before, thanked the woman at the stand, and walked her bike over to the vegetable stand where nearly everything was gone.
As soon as Mei looked up and smiled at her, the owner, Mei assumed, of the vegetables began talking. Chuckling lightly, Mei picked up one of the potatoes and rolled it around in her hand.
“I love sweet potatoes and onions. I’ll buy the rest of them.”
Mei grinned before setting the potato down with the others, “I would buy the parsnips as well, but I have no idea what to do with them.”
She laughed again before asking, “How much?"
Tumblr media
The trees gazed up at the sun, reaching, as Lola wished she could. Her life had been spent trying so hard to touch; to grow tall enough to be warmed. She felt warm, now, in the marketplace, with the unicorns grazing nearby. The winter sun was cold and clear, but Lola soaked it in. She smiled, a wide, floppy hat protecting her eyes from its light– - people approached her to buy vegetables, and she laughed. She felt almost happy.
Life wasn’t perfect in Ithaca but it was so much better than before; the goodness poured itself upon her, graciously, endlessly, and she didn’t need to stretch to be welcomed by it. Her old life began to seem a mirage to her, and now she was just Lola, growing her vegetables and always learning. The world saw her, and it didn’t jeer. Business has even been brisk; she might buy herself some cake later. There was still a basket of sweet potatoes, a few parsnips, and a clutch of onions left, but she thought she might close up early and find something fun to do. The chatter of the marketplace had lulled her into a sweet happiness, and she was relaxed enough to chat with any customers that came by.
One caught her gaze, a beautiful young woman with glossy black hair. Lola thought her eyes were like a fox’s, but kinder. Sharp, clever looking. “I’ve not got much left– - sorry. Just some, um… sweet potatoes and things.”
