one of my favorite story elements is "character way past their prime can still absolutely wreck you, leaving you to wonder just how powerful they used to be"

Thereās something about Shen Jiu that really sticks with me in a way that not many characters do. And I canāt stop prodding at that and trying to figure out what it is! And today, what Iāve shaken out of the story is that Shen Jiu embodies a lot of pretty visceral fears.
There isā¦ a lot that goes wrong in his life. And given the role he has in the story, thereās no kind of miracle fix that comes in to solve his problems at any point. Itās much more likely that whatever breaking point someone else pushes him to (killing qiu jianluo) or whatever partial resolution he manages to claw out for himself (entering cang qiong, even if itās much older than usual) will be weaponized against him in some way. Even in the happier timeline, itās only happier for him in that he doesnāt have to be tortured or learn that yue qingyuan is dead. Instead, he dies, very young, and the few people who would have mourned him donāt do so, because they donāt know that heās gone (which is another wrenching fear, the idea of disappearing and nobody around you even noticing). His life is a worst-case scenario, and originally itās something that happens to a deeply unsympathetic character, so hey, whatever, right? Yes, except for everything the rest of the story reveals.
So, I will go ahead and assume that most people reading this book have not been purchased by a young master and mistreated and forcibly engaged to his sister. Probably not not the most common backstory. But a lot of people have Been Through something, whether that was thanks to outside forces, bad luck with brain chemistry, or hell, just the stress of something like living through a long pandemic. Itās not that rare to live through an experience that leaves you wondering if what has happened to you left youā¦. damaged, or broken. Itās not usually a good idea to linger on, and humans are capable of a lot of recovery, butā
Shen Jiu gets to find out that yes, absolutely, it did damage him, in practical and emotional ways that he failed to recover from, external and internal. When Liu Qingge wants to upset him later, all he has to do is make a dig that āeven if talent doesnāt guarantee high achievement, itās still better than starting to learn at age sixteen, lmao.ā And Shen Jiu refuses to admit that heās going to the brothel just to sleep, becauseĀ āseeing women and saviors and huddling in their arms for comfortā is shameful. I donāt expect to ever fret about how I started cultivating too late in life, but the idea of receiving that confirmation that something was measurably, observably lost in me, that sinks a nasty hook deep into my stomach.
And I donāt want to get distracted with a whole rant about this, but Qi-geĀ āabandoningā him at this same time is an absolutely brutal thing to throw into the mix. It tears both of them up so badly that they canāt even begin resolving it before they die, but as far as Shen Jiu knows, someone he adored and trusted justā¦ forgot about him. It was too much trouble to come back for him. Against the odds, Yue Qi found a spot in a cultivation sect, had connections and power, and either forgot to come back for Shen Jiu or decided it wasnāt worth doing. The end of extra thirteen, slightly rephrased, would be āit would have hurt shen jiu less to learn that yue qi was dead than to learn he chose not to come back for him.ā Again, confirmation of a fear that you want to believe is irrational. No, the people you care about arenāt just waiting for an excuse to get away from you. Except for Shen Jiuā¦ mm.
But what really, really got to me was the whole Binghe situation. The discourse scene is uhhh spicy right now, so letās be real explicit that the way he treated Binghe was inexcusable. But what put the nail in my emotional coffin was realizing, again, that itās about the fear that your experiences have damaged you. Not just the fear that theyāve damaged you, the fear that theyāve poisoned you, that theyāve affected you in more ways than youāve already noticed, and that no matter how you try to leave your mark on the world, youāre doomed to ruin everything you touch. The last few 79 extras are very hard for me to read, because Shen Jiuās conversation with Yue Qingyuan is so much about his awareness of how heās responsible for shaping Luo Binghe, and then his conversation with Luo Binghe is about his realization that simple proximity to him was enough to doom Yue Qingyuan to a terrible death. Itās absolutely suffocating, the idea that you yourself are a poison in other peopleās lives, in ways that youāre completely unaware of.
There we go, thatās enough being sad about Shen Jiu for the day. I kid, there are not enough hours in the day for being sad about Shen Jiu. But itās time to go accomplish other things while being sad, because my mind has been circling around these ideas all day.

Thinking about the best way to approach a teacher to establish a date for a course - their course, simply because the schedule is a meaningless formality posted on the uni notice board, is giving me anxiety.

reblog if you think these are all valid reasons for a student or an employee to take a day off from their school or their job without their grades or paycheck being affected in any way:
- period cramps
- exhaustion, be it mental or physical
- depression, anxiety, and other mental health related issues

About the AO3 "No Guest Comments for a while" warning
If you're not following any of AO3's social media accounts you might be in the dark as to what kind of "spam comments" have engendered this banner at the top of the site:
These spam comments have been posted about a great deal on the AO3 subreddit for the past couple of days. Initially they comprised a bunch of guest (logged out users) bot comments that insulted authors by suggesting they were using AI and not writing their own fics. Some examples, from the subreddit:
But it then escalated to outright graphic porn images and gifs being posted in comments, again by logged out 'Guest' accounts. Obviously, I'm not going to give examples of those, but between these two bot infestations, AO3 has clearly decided to act and has temporarily closed the ability to post comments for users who are not logged in with an AO3 account.
Unfortunately, this means that genuine readers who don't have an AO3 account won't be able to leave comments on fics that they enjoy.
If you are a genuine reader who doesn't yet have an AO3 account, I strongly suggest getting yourself on the waiting list for one. More and more AO3 authors are now locking their fics down to registered users only - either due to these bot comments or concerns about AI scraping their work - which means you're probably missing out on a lot of great stuff.
Hopefully guest commenting will be enabled again at some point soon, but I suggest not waiting until then. Get yourself on that list.
Wait times are going to be longer than usual at the moment, due to the current Wattpad purge [info on Fanlore | Wattpad subreddit thread], but if you're in line, then your invite will come through eventually.
Update: There's now a Megathread about this on the AO3 subreddit.
