GONE Series Roger spoilers

Is there anone eles who read the GONE seies that keeps thinking about for ages after and can’t let go of something?

Right now the thing I keep thinking is, what was wrong with Roger? The lake was attacked half his boat burned up, then he ends up in the lake unconsious. When he’s eventually found he spends months in hospital.

I just keep wondering how? He didn’t seem to be on fire, he was coughing on smoke, but I doubt he breathed in anymore than any of the others who managed  to swim to shore.

The best I could come up with was this, Michael Grant wanted to create suspense and make it so we didn’t know if Roger would live or not, I don’t think even he knows what Roger would sick with. He just wanted to leave it until the very end to say weather Roger lived or died.
