Sonnet for President Trump
Shall I compare thee to a Shakespeare play? Thou art less clever and less literate, But how else should poor poets have their say? Alas, our leader lacks a donkey’s wit! Sometime too fierce the fire of ego burns, And when a man is made to look a fool, He rages ’gainst the mockery he earns, As little boys will cry when teas’d at school. But thy eternal tantrums shall not wane, Nor shalt thou e’er unclench thy tiny fists, Nor listen when the people dare to say, “’Tis you, dear sir, who made a scene of this.”         So long as men can breathe and speech is free,         The Bard shall speak and show thy shame to thee.
(4 July 2017, in honor and defense of freedom of artistic expression)

Today I learned that the university of Coimbra in Portugal has a great 18th-century library, the Biblioteca Joanina, that maintains a colony of bats to effectively control the population of paper-eating insects called papirófagos. These bats are less than an inch long. They roost during the day behind the bookcases and come out at night. There doesn’t seem to be any English word for papirófago, a cursory search turns up no details about what sort of insect they are, and ngl I am slightly concerned about them as a phenomenon. But I think my overarching point here is clear:
This library keeps tiny bats that look after the books.

I wish I could store the random motivation I get at 3AM in a kind of battery, to recharge myself with the next day.

Happy birthday Shakespeare. Thanks for your brilliant plays, massive contribution to the English language, and your bisexual sonnets which have been annoying homophobes for centuries.

Conservation at the Bodleian.
The retrofit of Weston Library gave us the room and facilities needed to preserve our world-class collections for the world.
If you think that’s cool, consider voting for us in the RIBA Stirling Prize public vote!
