Kazunari
Hey director, how do I look?
Taichi
Do Kazu and I feel like twins?
Izumi
Yeah, you really do! The costumes look really good on everyone.
Citron
The studio is different from what we usually use. I really feel like I’ve been pulled into the gymnasium world~!
Guy
Yes, the atmosphere really gives off that feeling.
Staff
We designed the studio like the gymnasium classroom.
So then, let’s begin the shoot!
First off let’s start with taking photos of the characters that have the deepest connections, then we’ll move onto the solo shots.
So then, let’s start off with Minagi and Takato.
Tasuku
Alright.
Tsuzuru
Let’s do this!
Cameraman
Ohh, yes, that’s it! Now pretend like you two are going against each other.
Tasuku
Like this?
Tsuzuru
Okay so I’ll do this…
Taichi
Wow look at that, it looks like a painting! The delinquent and class president, sooo cool!
Guy
That’s right, I can feel the chemistry between those two.
Kazunari
They’re a real good match~!
Cameraman
Okay! Alrighty then, let’s do the twins, Nanao and Miyoshi! Can you step into the scene?
Kazunari
Let’s go go go! Twin vibe switch ON!
Taichi
Let’s do our best!
Kazunari
Hey hey, it's pretty fun being twins, dontcha think?
Taichi
Sure is!
Cameraman
Alright, how about we try to get some shots of you two laying down and bonding?
Izumi
Oh... that’s so cute.
Citron
Director, your heart is spilling out!
Izumi
Huh! Oh!
Citron
No worries, I was thinking the same thing!
Cameraman
And for the last shot, let’s get childhood friends Citron and Guy.
Citron
Wooo it’s our time to whine~!
Guy
Our time to pine..?
Tsuzuru
TO SHINE!
Cameraman
Citron, could you sit on the windowsill over there?
Citron
Yep! Here?
Guy
I will sit in this chair.
Cameraman
Yeah, just like that! Wow, what a delicate looking picture!
Tasuku
You can count on those two to make a picture perfect scene.
Tsuzuru
They really do, the moment looks so fragile.
Staff
Alrighty then, now we’re done with the pair shots, onto the solos! First up let’s start with Takato, over here please.
Tasuku
Got it.
Citron
– Guy, come sit over here.
Guy
Something the matter?
Citron
Not at all, just sit!
Guy
Hm, alright.
Citron
.. You know, it really feels like we’re classmates when we sit next to each other like this.
Guy
…
Citron
Your face looks like a bee that got shot with a watergun.
Guy
No, it's just that this is something I never really got to think about when I lived in Zahra.
Citron
Well this is just pretend, so we can live this experience now!
Guy
Hmm, I suppose.
Tsuzuru
Hey, it’s your turn, you two.
Citron
Oh Guy, look it’s the class president! He’s caught us slacking!
Guy
My apologies. We did not intend to ignore our duties.
Tsuzuru
I mean they called your names!
Staff
Thank you for your hard work today!
Taichi
Good work everyone!
Kazunari
Is it time to pick which photo should be on the cover?
Izumi
Yeah, it is.
Cameraman
For this issue, how about this one?
Tasuku
Guy and Citron.
Kazunari
I was thinking of that one!
Taichi
Same! I was gonna say Citron and Guy too!
Citron
I’m so happy~! I’m gonna send this issue to Tangerine and Mika!
Guy
Yes.
Tsuzuru
I'm sure they'll both be happy to see it.
Staff
So with that settled, this will be the photo for the cover.
Izumi
Yes! Thank you so much!

Taichi
The “VELUDO” features always feel fresh, it’s an experience a little different from an ordinary performance!
Kazunari
True dat! Plus, we’re twins this time!
Taichi
I’m mega excited!
Tsuzuru
Takato is playing the part of a delinquent.
Tasuku
Yeah… At first glance I felt like the character was just a delinquent who was capable of small acts of kindness here and there, but taking another stance, the character seems like he’s actually a kind person.
And you will be playing the class president.
Tsuzuru
That’s right. To be honest I think it’ll be pretty hard playing a fierce leader type of guy...
Tasuku
I think it’s up to interpretation, but I think the character seems like a dude with a strong core.
Tsuzuru
That’s true… Considering what you said, I think my view on the character has changed a bit.
Citron
Hey Guy, gimme a more melancholy look! Gaze into the distance!
Guy
Like this..?
Citron
Ohh, much better.
Tsuzuru
What are you making Guy do now, Citron?
Citron
I’m making him into a more dramatic actor! I wanna bring out his full potential.
Kazunari
Guyguy, your character was supposed to be serious but a little aloof, right?
Guy
Yes, that's right.
Citron
I’m playing Guy’s childhood friend, so I am just looking at the little details.
Tasuku
So it serves as role-building, too.
Tsuzuru
Well, you’re playing the energetic classmate this time, so I think you've already got the energy for the part.
Taichi
Right! Almost no different from everyday Citron!
Tsuzuru
Hm.. How about << He is my friend. >>?
Guy
Yes, correct.
Tsuzuru
Nice!
Guy
Is it too much to study Zahran while you’re already busy with university work?
Tsuzuru
Not at all. With you as my tutor, taking this time to study is actually quite freeing.
Besides, it was frustrating hearing Zahran and not knowing the language.
As I learn more and more, I find myself having to focus less about trying to think of words to say.
Guy
I see. That is good to hear.
Tsuzuru
I’m the one who should be apologising for taking you away from your plans.
Guy
Like I said before, I am more than happy to teach you my language and I am happy you want to learn. Tutoring you is not a burden at all.
Tsuzuru
Thank you so much.
You know, ever since I’ve started learning Zahran we’ve been hanging out more.
Between these study sessions and preparation for Gymnasium.
Guy
That is true. I did not expect to be playing the part of a student in the gymnasium performance. It’s quite a refreshing feeling.
Tsuzuru
Haha, very true. It is rare to see you taking the part of a student.
Guy
Yes...
Tsuzuru
… By the way, Guy, there really is something you are concerned about regarding the play, right?
Guy
Something I am concerned about?
Tsuzuru
Ah, I mean, it's okay if there's nothing, but... you seemed concerned earlier.
Guy
It is nothing serious, but...
As an adult, I do worry a little about my ability to portray a student character.
Tsuzuru
So that's it… From what I’ve observed in practice, though, you make a pretty convincing student.
Well, I guess it does help that our practices are pretty lively. It makes me feel like we’re all students in the same class.
Guy
True, I will admit I felt a little different at practice. I suppose that is this feeling of camaraderie.
Tsuzuru
Haha, that’s right. I think that’s the type of energy that students have.
Guy
… I see. Perhaps I was a little too worried then.
Thank you, Minagi.

Tsuzuru
Gymnasium..
Guy
A while back Mikage and Tsukioka were tour guides around a doll exhibition.
Izumi
Yep, that’s what I’m talking about! Not too long ago “VELUDO” did a doll themed feature.
If I recall one of Homare’s doll-making friends read the article and was inspired by it.
Kazunari
Yeah, Azu and Yukkii looked so good on the cover!
Citron
Oh yeah, I remember seeing that feature!
Izumi
Yes, and since they are going to have a solo exhibition, they were hoping that they could have some members of our troupe as tour guides.
Homare’s acquaintance even went as far as to ask the editorial department of "VELUDO" directly if they would do a feature on us this time.
Taichi
Ask them directly? Woah what passion!
Izumi
Hehe, the staff was also a little unsure since they had just done a doll feature, but seeing such enthusiasm eventually won them over.
Guy
So then, why ask for us?
Izumi
It was a request from the doll maker.
The feature is set to be the same as the last one, only this time the setting will be students in a gymnasium。
He thought the theme suited these members of MANKAI Company.
Tsuzuru
I see..
Izumi
… So with that said, what do you guys think?
Tasuku
I don't know if I'd fit into something like a gym uniform...
Izumi
I am sure they will be mindful not to make the costumes too tight.
Tasuku
I see… Well, then I guess I won’t have to worry about that.
Citron
I think it would suit you well, Tasuku! I'll do it, too~♪
Tsuzuru

Tsuzuru
What were you watching?
Guy
A dance lecture video.
Tsuzuru
Oh, I get it. Is this for role study?
Guy
Yes. They throw around more complex jargon than I expected.
My highest priority is finding good command over the fundamentals of dance.
Izumi
That’s right, you’re playing the role of a dance instructor.
Guy
Correct. If I am to be a teacher, I should at the very least be able to execute the basics without struggle.
It’s difficult to pin down.
Izumi
(Now that he mentions it, I can understand the intense focus from before. But wow, Guy makes for a perfect teacher role, even if it’s tough to master.)
Guy
I’ve just had a realization. I cannot sit here and spend all my time watching videos.
Tsuzuru
From the looks of it, aren’t you forgetting the hand movements?
Guy
What do you mean?
Tsuzuru
When you’re trying to imitate a specific style, you have to start by looking at the big picture. Details are important too, but they come after you understand the most basic things.
This applies to gestures and even manners of speaking. Start with what you can replicate yourself, then hone in on the details… Something like that?
Guy
I see. I will start with the bigger picture.
In the video I was watching, the instructor was clapping his hands to the beat. I suppose that means I should start with clapping... I think.
Izumi
Yeah, you got it. I think that’s a wonderful place to start.
Guy
Hmm, something like this?
Tsuzuru
Ohh, nice!

(Wow… Guy just radiates dignity.)
(Regardless of what he does, Guy always treats his work with respect… He’s seriously top of the line.)

The Enchanting and Beautiful Temptress 2/ 3
Summary: Azuma runs into an old acquaintance and Mankai is invited to dress up as Chinese spirits at a ryokan.
This story references some Chinese mythology and you can read more about them here!
牛頭: Niutou
辟邪: Bixie
狐仙: Huxian
Thank you so much to Drop for requesting and sharing this story with me! I hope you like it!
Izumi
And that’s all the details, what do you guys say?
Kumon
That sounds so freaking cool!
Kazunari
A ryokan with a spirit concept sounds based as hell! I’m hyped!
Sakyo
Yes, it does tickle my interest. The only thing left is to decide who will play the spirits.
Azuma
Mr. Yamamoto said he wanted to have three in total. They are called Bixie, Huxian, and Niutou.
Citron
Obtuse, rubber goose, green moose, guava juice! I don’t get it at all!
Tsuzuru
Dude, what the hell!? How did this turn into some crazy rhyming game?
Izumi
So here are some more details about the Chinese spirit theme. First, about Bixie. She is a female Pixiu, “a creature that wards off evil.” Usually depicted with a pair of deer antlers. They say that Bixie helps out those suffering from bad feng shui.
Next is Huxian. Huxian is a fox spirit who has spent many years training in the mountains alone, and it is described as sexy and alluring in appearance.
And at last, Niutou. Its name is made from the Chinese characters for “ox” and “head.” Just as you would expect, it is a spirit with the head of an ox. Niutou is responsible for collecting the souls of those approaching death so that they can be judged in front of the courts of hell. Sinners are punished, the righteous are rewarded.
Banri
Okay, after hearing the descriptions, Bixie sounds the most like Azuma, yeah?
Taichi
I was thinking the same!
Homare
Yes, he fits the role like a silk glove!
Tsumugi
Since Mr. Yamamoto is Azuma’s acquaintance, it only makes sense that he would participate in the event.
Azuma
Well, since it seems like everyone agrees, I will take the role of Bixie.
Tasuku
That only leaves Huxian and Niutou.
Chikage
And you mentioned Mr. Yamamoto also wanted a skilled cook, yes? I think Omi would be good for that part.
Muku
If Omi is going to help out, I think he would fit as Niutou.
Yuki
Isn’t that too obvious? Maybe he wants to play a role he’s never done before. It’d be pretty refreshing to see him branch out.
Azami
Alright, then what do you think about him as Huxian?
Izumi
Why don’t we ask the man himself? What would you like to do, Omi?
Omi
Haha, I don’t have any objections. Creating a menu for the ryokan does sound pretty interesting though.
Guy
So next we have Niutou.
Tenma
How about I take that part?
When I heard about this whole Chinese spirits project, I thought it’d be a great chance to study and expand my horizons. I wanna give it a shot.
Izumi
Let me think... Since you can’t be out in public, I think we’ll need to confirm the details of your involvement with Mr. Yamamoto.
Azuma
I could talk to him about it personally.
Izumi
Yes, please do.
Tenma
…I knew this was going to be themed after Chinese spirits, but I didn’t expect the atmosphere to be so beautiful.
Omi
Yeah, it’s even better seeing it in person.
Izumi
I feel like this place would be scary if you were here alone at night.
Yamamoto
Haha, I’m flattered. I wanted to make it truly immersive.
Azuma
You two look quite handsome in your costumes. They really suit you.
Omi
Yeah, you too.
Izumi
You guys fit in perfectly!
Azuma
Fufu, thank you.
Yamamoto
Alright then, let’s get started right away. I’ll direct you to your posts.
Yukishiro, you’ll lead guests around the ryokan. Fushimi, you’ll be helping out in the kitchen and bringing food to guests.
And for Tenma, who can’t be seen in public, I think you would do a great job with yumomi.
You’ll be in a position where you won’t have to interact with guests too often, plus it’ll be hard to tell who you are in your Niutou costume.
Oh, and when in costume, I think it would be best to change your language a little to make it seem truly immersive.
That would be a nice touch, don’t you think?
I’ll leave it to you how you want to portray your characters.
Omi
Change our language…
Tenma
I gotta think about this one.
Azuma
I look forward to seeing how you guys act out your roles.
Izumi
Ahh, I guess I’m just tagging along? Is it really okay for me just to stay around the ryokan during all of this?
And here I was thinking you guys invited me to help…
Azuma
Fufu, it’s fine. You already work so hard, I think it would be best if you just had a rest and enjoyed your stay.
Omi
I was speaking with one of the waiters earlier. They said that the open air baths have great views. If you get a chance, I think you should really go check them out.
Tenma
You know it wouldn’t hurt to take a day off once in a while.
Izumi
Thank you. Well, I guess I should take your suggestions and destress while I’m here.
Azuma
We’ll see you later.
Izumi
Good luck, everyone!

The Enchanting and Beautiful Temptress 1/ 3
Summary: Azuma runs into an old acquaintance and Mankai is invited to dress up as Chinese spirits at a ryokan.
This story references some Chinese mythology and you can read more about them here!
牛頭: Niutou
辟邪: Bixie
狐仙: Huxian
Thank you so much to Drop for requesting and sharing this story with me! I hope you like it!
Azuma
Hello, miss director. Any plans for today?
Izumi
Oh, not really… I was going to go shopping for dinner, but that’s about it.
Azuma
Is that so? Good, I’m glad you don’t have much. This works out, seeing as I thought to ask if you’d like to accompany me to the soap shop.
I’ve used up almost all of my favorite soap, and I thought you might come along as my partner. What do you say?
Izumi
Sounds great! I’d love to come.
Azuma
Fufu, it’s settled.
Izumi
Wow, it smells amazing in here. There are so many types of soap!
Azuma
Come over here, director. Feel this one.
Izumi
Whoa! It’s wiggling!
Azuma
Fufu, that’s right. Pretty interesting, isn’t it?
Izumi
Is this really soap?
Azuma
It’s a type of konjac soap.
Izumi
Ohh, now that you say that, it does feel like konjac jelly…
Azuma
Don’t you think it’s cute? It’s quite the popular gift item.
The ingredients used in making konjac are known for being great sponges, and they absorb toxins and excess sebum. It’s a lovely cleanser and leaves your skin looking very shiny.
Option
Wow, you really know your beauty facts, Azuma!
I never knew it had uses outside of food!
Izumi
Option: Wow, you really know your beauty facts, Azuma!
Azuma
Learning how to properly cleanse your face is the foundation of skincare, after all.
Izumi
I’m so busy all the time. I gotta admit it’s difficult for me to remember to properly cleanse, even though I know how important it is to keep a clean face.
END CHOICE
Izumi
Option: I never knew it had uses outside of food!
Azuma
Konjac is quite versatile. As an example, it can also be used for sponges, dietary supplements, and many other beauty products.
Izumi
Wow, it’s that handy?
Azuma
Yes, in fact I’ve used konjac sponges before. They’re gentle on the skin, which is nice.
I should have some unused sponges laying around. When we get back to the dorm, I’ll take a look and let you have one.
END CHOICE
Izumi
Thank you so much!
What’s this black soap over here?
Azuma
That one is made with charcoal. Charcoal is used to cleanse the pores of any dirt or oils.
Yamamoto
Excuse me, but are you by any chance Yukishiro?
Azuma
???
Yamamoto
I had a feeling. Long time no see, you’re looking well.
Azuma
Oh, Mr. Yamamoto! Long time no see indeed. Fancy running into you here.
Director, this is Mr. Yamamoto, he runs a ryokan. We’re acquaintances from way back.
Izumi
Nice to meet you. You can call me Tachibana.
Azuma
She is the director of my acting troupe.
Yamamoto
You know, you two look quite good together. I almost mistook you for a couple.
Izumi
HUH!?
Azuma
Fufu, I’ll consider that a compliment. I’m honored.
Yamamoto
You said an acting troupe, right? Does that mean you’re working as an actor now?
Azuma
Indeed, more or less.
Yamamoto
To be honest, I was hoping you could give me a hand with something…
Azuma
And what would that be?
Yamamoto
It’s just… Next month I plan to open a Chinese spirit themed ryokan.
I’m here to look for soaps that can go in the guest rooms.
Azuma
Shooting for the stars as always, I see.
Yamamoto
Heh, well… I’m just a man who’s passionate about my work.
If your troupe has the time for it, I would really appreciate it if you came and helped out at the ryokan for a day as a spirit.
I think the guests would really get a kick out of seeing a “real” spirit. What do you say?
Azuma
Sounds interesting, but… what kind of spirit were you thinking of?
Yamamoto
Three spirits in particular—Bixie, Huxian, and Niutou.
If you help me out, I would of course be happy to provide you with a meal and a stay in our nicest room.
Azuma
That sounds very enticing. You always come up with such top-notch ideas, Mr. Yamamoto.
Yamamoto
The only thing that’s left is to find a good cook.
Izumi
A cook, you say?
Yamamoto
At the moment, I’ve yet to finalise the menu. It would be really nice if I could find someone to help with it.
Azuma
That is not in my area of expertise, but perhaps my lovely director could help you out? What do you say, miss director?
Izumi
I see… Would it be alright if I thought about it a little and got back to you?
Yamamoto
Of course, no problem.
Izumi
I’ll talk with the rest of the troupe and get back to you sometime this week.
Yamamoto
Thank you for your consideration.

South. Hill. Prison 11/11
Summary: During the finale of a play, Juza gets caught up in a stage accident that leaves him with severe stage fright. He is set to be the lead in Autumn Troupe’s 8th play, but for some reason he just can’t find the courage to take the stage again. Even his long time rival, Banri, seems to take notice of his hesitation. After much thinking, Juza comes up with a plan to regain his confidence as an actor...
This is a collaboration with the amazing An and the great proofreading skills of kamebunfactory!
This is a 10 part story with an epilogue.

Epilogue “Honest Liqueur”
Taichi
Wowie wow, the finale’s already over.
Omi
Yep, I still feel like we have more performances to do, but it’s really over.
Azami
It was way too short.
Banri
I wish it didn’t have to end, man.
Sakyo
Well anyway, let’s celebrate the fact that we made it to the end in one piece.
Kabuto
Excuse the interruption.
Taichi
Huh?
Sakyo
Who invited him?
Banri
The hell, what is this guy doing here!?
Kabuto
I got permission from the director.
Mr. Juza Hyodo.
Juza
?
Kabuto
…Are you free this coming May to July?
Banri
Screw you, who the hell gave you permission to just barge in here and start asking questions?!!
Kabuto
Even if you weren’t worried, your part was open long ago.
Banri
Ugh, don’t remind me.
Kabuto
Anyway, we’re a bit short on people since our strongest actor left the troupe.
Banri
So that’s why you—
Kabuto
Did you forget the favor our troupe did for yours back then?
Sakyo
That’s such a yakuza line.
Taichi
Shh shhh Sakyo!
Kabuto
Well, we’ll be back to give you an official offer.
And you, Mr. Banri Settsu, you’re quite the actor yourself. Aren’t you interested?
Banri
Mmnn, uhh, thanks, I’ll think about it.
Kabuto
Alright.
Juza
…
Kabuto
To see an actor like you on stage… Life ain’t bad.
Juza
Thanks.
…So, who was that?
Banri
YOU DIDN’T KNOW? Did you really think that was some random visitor?!
Sakyo
That was Amadate from Hyakka troupe.
Juza
Oh, that guy.
Azami
Not another cheap restaurant.
Banri
I remember this place from Mantou Fist. Damn, it doesn’t fit the theme of a prison play at all.
Sakyo
Oh, quit your whining. You know how much it would cost to go to an expensive restaurant with your bottomless stomachs?
Taichi
Hey, don’t say that!
Azami
I don’t really feel like this gesture is genuine.
Omi
Anyway, we should order now.
Izumi
Yeah. So, Sakyo, are we gonna get some Shaoxingjiu?
Sakyo
Yes.
Omi
When I think back to Mantou Fist, it really hits me how much everyone’s grown in so little time.
Banri
Yeah, now Hyodo and I can drink.
Sakyo
If it’s not sweet, Juza won’t drink it.
Juza
Yeah.
Izumi
I’m glad this play could strengthen the brotherhood between Juza and Azami!
Omi
We usually see Juza and Kumon together, but it was cool to see what other types of brotherly bonds there are out there.
Azami
I think Juza’s request for the play was beautifully executed.
Sakyo
The prison theme was quite compelling too. It was a good idea to focus on lighting in the performance.
Banri
Akashi did a really good job this time.
Taichi
Yeah, his work was amazing! From the beginning scene to the sunrise at the end, the lights were super cool!
Staff
Will that be all?
Juza
…I’ll have another cup of fruit sake.
Staff
Alright.
Azami
I’m really glad you overcame your fear of the spotlight.
Juza
Yeah, me too. The magic brush really did the trick. It helped Kumon and it helped me, it’s truly a magnificent charm.
Azami
If you need help like this again, you can use it in the future. I can’t be doing this for free though.
Juza
Kumon has a good friend in you, you know that? I hope you two can stay by each other’s side for a long time.
Azami
Where the hell did that come from? If you’re gonna flatter me, there’s no way I can let you down.
Juza
What a guy. You were amazing during the play, and I don’t know anyone with makeup skills as good as yours.
Azami
Oh, that’s all you’re gonna say?
Juza
Acting and makeup are two completely different fields, but you’re skilled in both. It’s something only you could achieve. You’re amazing. No, you’re an international treasure.
Azami
Uh, you feeling alright, Juza?
Haha, maybe you’ve had enough to drink for one night.
Juza
The director is amazing too. Being able to gather all these different people into one troupe, it’s like a zoo director trying to gather a bunch of animals at the zoo.
Izumi
Oh, you think so?
Juza
And you, Sakyo, you’re the penny pincher we need. I don’t think we would be able to stay focused on our goals if it weren’t for you.
Sakyo
Huh, you’re praising me for that?
Juza
And Omi, you’re an amazing cook. You’re a great actor, but you’re also a great cook. I admire your diverse skill set.
Omi
Thank you.
Juza
And I can’t forget you, Taichi. Your presence alone is amazing. You have the ability to light up the room. I think you may be the brightest light that exists in all of humanity.
Taichi
I-I, uhhh, thank you?
Izumi
What’s gotten into you, Juza? You’re acting a little weird.
Azami
He’s drunk.
Juza
Settsu...
Banri
What? If you’re gonna praise me, then come on, lay it on me.
Juza
Settsu is a man with many talents. It’s impressive to see how much acting has helped you realise your true potential in so many areas.
Banri
N-no shut up...
Juza
But, y’know, other parts about you just make me sick to my stomach.
Banri
Oyy, what the hell? Aren’t you supposed to be praising me?!
Juza
You’ve shown your abilities backstage as well. I think once you’re able to hone your new abilities and get more experience, you will be a formidable opponent.
The only thing standing in your way is that attitude of yours.
Banri
Are you praising me or insulting me? Pick one, you idiot!
Azami
So he becomes honest when he’s drunk?
Sakyo
Seems like it.
Izumi
Did we really expect anything less?
Sakyo
I can’t say I wasn’t worried when those two came of age and started drinking.
Taichi
Haha, Ban-chan is extra weak to attacks when he’s drunk!
Omi
You love to see it.

Shaw
Yes.
Yes, you have the right person, but...
Huh?
Ren is dead?
Oh, no, you can handle the process.
Please dispose of all his belongings.
I don’t mind. Yeah.
Yes, understood.
So he’s dead, huh.
I wasn’t expecting him to go with honor in the first place, but man, it’s just like him to die behind bars.
When was the last time I even saw him? …I don’t remember. Ten years ago, maybe.
I don’t think I even said anything memorable when we parted.
So he’s dead… And so what? Should I care?
What a shitty goodbye letter.
Ren
You’re the same coldhearted bastard as always, Aniki.
Shaw
—
Ren
What, did you forget the face of your dear little brother, too? Color me fuckin’ shocked.
Shaw
Didn’t think I was invested enough to start hallucinating.
Ren
Too bad for you, but I’m not a hallucination.
Shaw
So you didn’t die?
Ren
Do I seem like I’m alive?
Here’s your proof. I don’t even have a reflection in the mirror.
Shaw
So you’re a ghost. Whatever, just go home. I don’t have any business with you.
Ren
I didn’t wanna see your crusty mug either, but for some reason, I’m forced to follow wherever you go.
Shaw
What a pain in the ass.
Ren
The feeling’s mutual.
Izumi
(There’s not a drop of affection between these brothers, and the air is tense… Shaw’s character is worlds apart from the real Juza.)
(Juza said he wanted to play his own foil, and I think he hit the nail on the head with this one.)
Kumon
(Oh my god, oh my god, Nii-chan looks so freakin’ cool, oh my god! But this play also makes me want to cry…)
Shaw
You’re still here?
Ren
Sorry about that~
Shaw
Y’know, I heard you died in a dumpster in the middle of the night.
What the hell’s up with that? Most people don’t die from drowning in trash.
Ren
Dunno. I don’t remember.
Shaw
If we can figure out why you died, we can find out why you became a ghost.
Ren
I told you I don’t remember jack shit. All I can remember is little bits and pieces from when I was alive.
Shaw
What a waste of space...
Ren
Give it up. Let’s get along, Aniki.
Shaw
Fuck off, why the hell would I get along with—
Member A
Boss? Who are you talking to?
Shaw
No one.
Tsk, people are gonna think I’m crazy at this rate.
Member A
What’s wrong? S’rare to see you like this.
Shaw
Hey, why do you think dead people turn into ghosts?
Member A
Ghosts!?
Boss, do ya really believe in that kinda thing?
Shaw
Forget about it.
Member A
I heard in a movie once that ghosts exist ‘cause they’ve got unfinished business from when they were alive.
Shaw
...Hey, you said the police got wind of that issue from a while ago, right?
Member A
Oh, yeah.
But we just gotta find a scapegoat like always and—
Shaw
I’ll turn myself in.
Member A
Huh!?
Izumi
(In order to help his deceased brother rest in peace, Shaw goes to South Hill Prison to find out more about his death and the possibility of any unfinished business.)
Ren
Never thought I’d come back here again.
South Hill Prison feels like home sweet home.
Shaw
Good for you.
I’m just here to fix whatever unfinished business you have and get rid of you as soon as I can.
Shaw
How much do you remember?
Ren
Uh, a little bit?
Oh, I remember that guy. His name’s Douglas. We were close.
Shaw
Douglas.
Douglas
Hm?
You new here?
Shaw
You know ‘Ren’?
Douglas
Ren?
Shaw
He was my little brother.
Douglas
You’re Ren’s older brother? Now that you mention it, he did say he had a brother.
Shaw
I’m Shaw. Nice to meet ya.
Douglas
Yeah, likewise.
I’m sorry about what happened to Ren. It was so sudden, I was surprised, too.
Shaw
Actually, I’m investigating his death right now. Will you cooperate with me?
Douglas
Did something happen?
Shaw
No, it’s just been bothering me that he died in such a strange way.
Douglas
Got it. You can ask me anything.
Izumi
(I really like what they did with the lighting. It really stands out against the stark blackness of the prison.
I can really tell how sensitive Akashi was to Juza’s fears when deciding where to place the lights.)
Shaw
Even though you saved up enough money to go to college, you went and became an underling for a good-for-nothing gang.
Ren
Big talk for someone with blood on his hands. Hypocrite.
Shaw
It’s different with me. You really don’t listen to anyone, do you?
Ren
You’re the same as me.
Renato
The new guy’s been talking to himself for a while. We got another weird one in here, huh?
David
Think he’d be better off in solitary confinement?
Douglas
That’s Renato, and that’s David. They’re in charge of us prisoners. Whether it’s goods or information, if you want something, it’s fastest to go through them.
Shaw
Huh.
Douglas
Well, you’d best keep quiet and avoid standing out.
Renato
Miguel. I told you to do the laundry, didn’t I?
Miguel
Aah, I’m sorry!
David
Migue~l, take care of this too, won’t you~?
Miguel
Whoa!
Shaw
Who’s that?
Douglas
He trades in manual labor for money.
Renato
Hey, Miguel.
Shaw
That’s enough.
David
Huh?
Ren
Uh oh. He told you to keep quiet. You really don’t listen to anyone, do you, Aniki?
Shaw
Shut up.
Renato
What was that? You got a problem, new guy?
Shaw
I said that’s enough.
David
Okay, Miguel, you wanna stop business?
Miguel
N-no, I’m good!
Renato
Y’hear that? Stay out of this, newbie.
David
If you wanna do well here, follow the rules.
Shaw
Eat my ass.
Douglas
Phew.
Shaw
What’s up?
Douglas
Nah, I was just thinkin’ you really do feel like Ren’s older brother.
Izumi
(Shaw is quickly surrounded by the other prisoners after clashing with Renato and his gang…)
Shaw
You need something?
Prisoner A
Nah, just thought I’d show the newbie how we do things around here.
Prisoner B
Look, it ain’t good to let your head swell up, yeah?
Prisoner C
Yeah, we gotta get along!
Shaw
—Ghh.
So getting along means violence to you guys, huh.
Prisoner A
That’s part of our style here, too!
Shaw
—Tsk.
Prisoner B
Gh—!
Prisoner C
Ugh!
Shaw
So you’re lookin’ down on me, too.
Prisoner A
Shit—
Wha—!? Why’d the glass—Ow!
Ren
You always forget to watch your back, Aniki.
Shaw
Did you break that glass?
Who d’you think’s gonna clean this up? Jeez.
Ren
That’s all I get after helping you out?
Prisoner D
Heard you went against Renato, newbie?
Prisoner E
He’s gathering an opposing force. Let’s both join.
Shaw
What’re you talking about?
Douglas
Looks like you accidentally became the leader of the resistance against Renato. And on that note, I’ll be your adviser.
Shaw
Why is this happening…
Well, whatever. Looks like I’m a natural at gathering guys like this under my belt.
Douglas
You’re a lot more hot-headed than Ren.
Ren
You really are. I’m way cuter, aren’t I?
Shaw
Shut it.
Douglas
Haha, sorry, sorry.
Miguel
Shaw, thank you for earlier! I’m really scared of Renato and David, but I’ll join your team!
Shaw
Team…
Douglas
You’re a born leader.
Izumi
(Shaw ends up creating an opposition group to Renato’s, and before they know it, they’re already planning their counter strike…)
Renato
You wanna overthrow your superiors so bad that you’re causing an uproar like this? I’ll send your ass straight to the punishment chamber.
Shaw
There’s something I want to know.
Renato
You can just ask me about it like a normal person.
Shaw
I don’t know what you’ll demand in exchange for it.
Renato
I see you’ve got brains to think with.
David
But you’re shakin’ the boat, new guy, and these are rocky waters.
Prisoner A
Seriously, you’re way too cocky! We’ll show you what you get when you go against Renato!
Prisoner D
I’ve been fed up with you guys for ages! You’re so full of yourselves!
Douglas
Well, I guess a festival like this is fun every once in a while.
Miguel
I-I’ll fight, too!
Ren
Aniki!
Prisoner A
Ow! The glass again!?
Ren
Like I said, you always forget to watch your back. Still, helping you out is pretty refreshing—
Shaw
Huh!? Don’t smirk at me like that. Whose fault do you think it is that I’m in this situation?
Ren
No matter how I think about it, it’s your own fault.
Douglas
The prison guard’s gonna notice us at this rate.
Shaw
Let’s settle this quickly. Ren, smash the lights.
Ren
Don’t order me around like one of your lackeys!
Renato
—Gh.
Shaw
Don’t move.
Renato
When did—
Shaw
Nobody move. I’ve got his head.
David
Renato!?
Renato
You heard the man.
Prison Guard A
What are you up to!? Everybody, line up!
Izumi
(Little by little, the atmosphere between Shaw and Ren begins to change. You can really see this in the way Juza and Azami play their characters.)
Renato
So? What’d you wanna know?
Shaw
I thought you’d be more reluctant.
Renato
Well, this isn’t bad every once in a while. It’s a good way to let off some steam.
David
Hurry the hell up and state your business.
Douglas
Someone’s irritated. Are you frustrated that you lost?
Renato
Yeah, this guy hates losing.
Shaw
I wanna know about my little brother, Ren. Tell me everything you know.
Renato
So you’re Ren’s older brother?
David
You ain’t similar at all.
Shaw
That’s because we have different fathers.
David
We got some supply requests from Ren, but...
Renato
You can go ahead and say it.
David
He was planning to escape prison.
Shaw
Escape?
Renato
Douglas, you hear anything about it?
Douglas
No, nothing.
Renato
He asked us for some unusual stuff. When I asked him about it, he straight up told me his plans.
David
That guy had more of a backbone than I thought. He seemed promising, too.
Shaw
Were you guys gonna escape, too?
David
I wish. My dad’s in the hospital, and it doesn’t seem like he has much time left.
Shaw
Breaking out of jail, huh... Go ahead and prep the things Ren asked for. Let’s try to figure out how he was going to escape from here.
Douglas
In that case, I might be able to help a little, too. He did say something about wanting to break out before. But if he really was planning it, I wish he’d have talked to me about it. That way, I could’ve—
Shaw
You wanted to get out?
Douglas
It doesn’t look like I’m getting out of here anytime soon. If I’m gonna die, I wanna die outside these walls.
Shaw
Then let’s get out together.
Douglas
That’s not a promise to be made lightly.
Ren
Aniki’s just that kind of guy.
Shaw
Ren, any memories about your jailbreak?
Ren
Nothing at all.
Shaw
Don’t you at least remember why you wanted to break out?
Ren
I don’t.
Izumi
(After asking Renato about the details of Ren’s dealings, Shaw finds out that Ren was planning to escape prison…)
Shaw
Do you have any idea where Ren tended to spend his time? If he was digging a hole, it should’ve taken him a while.
Douglas
Someplace he hung around... Now that you mention it, he used to read some book around the perimeter of the grounds. Somewhere around here.
Shaw
...Here! Found a hole.
Douglas
So that guy was digging this all that time...
Shaw
Now we just gotta figure out when he was planning to use it.
David
It’d be tough to skulk around an experienced night guard, but if you’re up against a newbie, there’s your chance.
Douglas
If we’re talking about the guards’ shifts, I might have an idea.
Shaw
Why would you—
Douglas
Huh?
Shaw
No, it’s nothing.
Ren
Hey, why do you think I tried to break out of prison?
Shaw
You’ll remember once we try to break out tomorrow.
Ren
Speaking of which—
Shaw
Shut up, I’m trying to sleep.
Ren
Sounds like a you problem. I’ve got way too much free time, so.
Shaw
You...
Ren
Just so you know, you can’t hit a ghost.
Shaw
I’ll get rid of you tomorrow, no matter what.
Ren
I wonder when the two of us last had a fistfight~
Shaw
It was when you came back just to borrow some money.
Ren
Did that really happen?
Shaw
It was when I was aiming for my promotion.
Ren
Oh, maybe I was planning a jailbreak to borrow some money from you.
Shaw
If you’d done that, I’d have beaten you to death.
Ren
Haha, if that’s how it ended, I might not have become a ghost with forgotten regrets. Come to think of it, I haven’t spent this much time around you since we were at the institution.
Shaw
Yeah. Back then, you were still a nice, obedient kid.
Ren
Hearing you call me obedient feels gross.
Shaw
You grew up into a little asshole.
Izumi
(Now the atmosphere between the two has started to change. They’re slowly starting to feel like brothers that get along…)
(Because they’ve finally grown close, the thought of Ren passing on after they finish their task makes this scene even more heart-wrenching.)
Shaw
Let’s go.
David
Wait, the guard’s coming.
Prison Guard A
Number 187?
Ren
That was my number.
Prison Guard B
The guy who died the other day. Looked like he was planning to break out of here. He died before exposing himself so we have no idea how far he had gotten with his plan. Just to be safe, keep your eyes out for anything suspicious.
Prison Guard A
Understood.
Shaw
What did he mean? Does this mean Ren’s plan was leaked to the guards?
David
Renato and I didn’t let anything slip. There’d be nothing in it for us, y’know.
Shaw
Then is there anyone else who could’ve tipped them off?
David
But no one other than us…
Shaw
Douglas, how’d you get to know the guards’ shifts?
Douglas
Huh?
Shaw
That’s not information ordinary prisoners can get their hands on.
Douglas
Uh... I just happened to observe their routines while cleaning...
David
I didn’t know we had any cleaning spots where you could steal a glance at the guards’ shifts.
Shaw
You’re the one who tipped them off about Ren, aren’t you? The guards hired you as a mole to keep track of the other prisoners’ movements. You wouldn’t have been able to say no if they offered you a reduced sentence, would you?
Douglas
— *gasp*
Prison Guard C
Dammit, this sucks.
David
Why is he still here? Tonight’s shift was supposed to be a newbie. Are we fucked? That guy’s coming to the smoking room here. Douglas, you didn’t trick us, did you?
Douglas
No way!
Prison Guard D
Excuse me! I’m here for my shift!
Prison Guard C
You’re late, newbie!
Prison Guard D
I’m sorry!
Shaw
Looks like that part wasn’t a lie after all.
Douglas
...Sorry.
I’m—
Shaw
Let’s go. We’ll talk later.
Douglas
I was the first person to notice Ren was gone, and I knew he was trying to escape. He spoke to me about his jailbreak plan, after all. But we promised we’d get out of here together, so when I saw him leaving, I thought he’d betrayed me. I thought he’d abandoned me. That’s why I snitched to the guards. I had no idea he’d end up dying. It’s all my fault. I regret everything.
Shaw
Ren’s death wasn’t the guards’ fault. They only found him after he died. Otherwise, they would’ve been able to find more traces of his jailbreak. He died on his own.
Douglas
Really...?
Shaw
Yeah. Let’s clean up after the mess he made.
Ren
I tried to break out on my own...? Leaving Douglas behind...?
Douglas
The hole opens up at this garbage dump.
Shaw
So that’s why Ren died here.
David
Hey, what’s that?
Douglas
A letter...?
It’s addressed to Shaw.
David
He could’ve just mailed it.
Ren
I didn’t know your address.
Shaw
I didn’t even tell him my address after I cut him off. This letter... You were too late, idiot.
Ren
I don’t wanna hear that from you.
Izumi
(On top of the fence Shaw finds a letter…
Finally it is revealed that Ren passed away when trying to retrieve the letter he had written for Shaw. He ended up slipping and falling to his death.)
Shaw
What do you two plan to do from now on?
David
I’m headed straight to my dad’s hospital.
Douglas
I’m gonna get as far away from here as I can. You?
Shaw
I’m gonna visit my Ma’s grave. I guess this is farewell.
David
Don’t get caught.
Shaw
You too.
Douglas
Thanks, Shaw. I’m glad I met you brothers.
Shaw
Thanks for being friends with that idiot Ren.
Shaw
This is the first time the two of us have come to visit Ma’s grave together, isn’t it?
Ren
It is.
Shaw
Is this where you planned to put your letter?
Ren
Yeah. No matter how coldhearted you are, I knew you’d find it here eventually.
Shaw
I should’ve come to see you sooner. I wasted so much time for nothing.
Ren
It’s my fault as much as yours.
Shaw
I’m sorry, Ren.
Ren
That’s the first time you’ve ever apologized to me.
Shaw
Don’t be an idiot. I’ve definitely… Wait, Ren, your body’s—
Ren
Oh, looks like my time’s come. See you on the other side, Aniki.
Shaw
Selfish until the very end.
Izumi
(Shaw watches as the sunlight peeks over the horizon, illuminating Ren’s face before he disappears…)
Ren
I’m not sure what to write in this letter, but whatever. It’s been a while.
Heard you got promoted again, and now you’re the boss?
You really are cut out for the mafia.
I didn’t fit into that crowd the way you did.
I wonder why we’re so different, even though we’re brothers.
No, that’s not what I’m writing this for.
Here’s what I’m trying to say: thank you.
Talking to you face-to-face would’ve ended in another fight, so I’m putting it in a letter.
Well, since I don’t know your address, I was wondering how to get this to you. I thought I’d leave it to Ma.
Even you visit her grave, right?
Honestly, ever since Ma died, I feel like I was nothing but a pain in the ass for you. The only thing I remember is your pissed off face.
At the time, I thought my life would be better without you around.
But now I understand you thought about me a lot. Guess I’ve grown up too, huh?
I mean, before now, I wouldn’t have said this even if someone put a gun to my throat.
Maybe the time I’ve spent here has changed me.
‘Cause I have this friend, Douglas. He’s pretty quick-minded, and he’s a good guy.
He’s the one who came up with this jailbreak plan, too.
I was supposed to escape together with him, but I thought it might be better if I got out for a while to make sure it’s safe first.
I’m gonna leave this letter here and go back to South Hill Prison.
The next time we meet will be after my prison sentence is over.
Only if you’re up for it, though.
Well, see you on the other side, Aniki.
From: Ren. To: my lovable, piece-of-shit Aniki.
Izumi
(As the sun rises, the light around Shaw grows until he’s completely enveloped…)
Shaw
—
Izumi
(The sun takes its place in the sky above… and Juza’s eyes seem to light up as his whole body begins to glow. He’s finally escaped the darkness, and he can bask in the sun as all his regrets melt away.)
(The play ends with Juza’s sparkling eyes as he stands in that shower of light...)
(He looks so beautiful standing there under the light.)
(Juza wished for a scene where he could bathe in brilliant light, and he got just that. It’s right there in front of me.)
Juza
Thank you so much!
Azami
Thank you so much.
Akashi
I’m glad the play went over without a hitch.
Juza looked better than ever in this performance.
Kumon
NII-CHAN!
Juza
!?
Kumon
Nii-chan…. you did so well!
Juza
Thanks. You know I wouldn’t be standing here if it wasn’t for you.
Kumon
No no no, this was all your work! Good luck on your performance tomorrow!
Well then, I’ll take my leave now so I don’t cause anymore trouble!
Sakyo
He came and went in the blink of an eye.
Banri
Wasn’t he in the audience just a second ago?
Taichi
He zoom-zoomed!
Omi
You know, he was probably so worried he couldn’t contain himself.
Azami I
guess you guys have a bond no one could possibly understand.
Juza
...Yeah. That kid’s always been stronger than me.

South. Hill. Prison 9/11
This is a collaboration with the amazing An with the great proofreading skills of kamebunfactory!
This is a 10 part story with an epilogue.

Epilogue
Juza
“Yes.
Yes, you have the right person, but...
Huh?
Ren is dead?
Oh, no, you can handle the process.
Please dispose of all his belongings.
I don’t mind. Yeah.
Yes, understood.”
Izumi
(I wonder how things will go this time. I’m glad we were able to start rehearsal on schedule.)
(Juza seems to have regained his confidence, and I feel silly for worrying in the first place.)
(After performing his updated portrait, he confirmed with us what he wanted out of the script. I’m glad we made it out the other end.)
(He wanted there to be a sunrise scene in the final act where he could bathe in the breaking of daylight.)
(Lighting design was a huge focus in this play, so we decided to choose a setting that would allow for extremely dark scenes. Thus, ‘prison’.)
(Even if Juza's fear of the spotlight rears its head, this setting would let him cope with it better. We did our very best to ensure Juza would never be alone on stage for long.)
Azami
“You’re the same coldhearted bastard as always, Aniki. “
Juza
“—”
Azami
“What, did you forget the face of your dear little brother, too? Color me fuckin’ shocked. “
Izumi
(The two are talking privately in the mess hall. Azami plays the role of Juza’s younger brother who’s returned to him as a ghost. This is a pretty important scene because the two brothers previously cut ties.)
(I’m sure this is a difficult scene from Juza’s point-of-view… But he said acting out this dynamic was important for him to affirm his path in life.)
(I think he made the right decision. Playing a role like this is a wonderful sign for his growth as a person and as an actor.)
(Really, I could even see his growth during our rehearsals…)
(The old Juza would discuss scenes if they were related to his character, but he’d always take a step back if we started breaking down the play as a whole.)
(Juza was hesitant going into this role. He didn’t know where to go or what he could reasonably do, but ever since we started rehearsals, things have slowly fallen into place.)
(Has Juza noticed the difference himself yet…?)
Izumi
Any other questions?
Juza
Nope.
Izumi
Alright, thank you for your hard work.
Juza
Yeah. Same to you.
Izumi
You know, Juza, you’ve gotten a lot better at sharing your opinions.
It’s not just character interpretation or how you dictate the others as the lead actor. I can tell there’s a clear image in your mind when you describe things. Your communication skills are improving.
Juza
Now that you point it out, I get what you mean… I didn’t even notice.
It’s probably ‘cause I’ve started to understand my own feelings better.
I reread an essay I wrote in my senior year of high school recently.
I couldn’t remember a single word I had written in that thing, but it really moved me when I came back to it.
It’s not like I was trying to ignore those feelings, but I completely forgot what had compelled me to write that essay. So it was nice to revisit that time of my life.
For my updated portrait, I decided to use that old essay as the base.
I really thought my writing would suck, but Tsuzuru gave me some good tips. One thing that really helped was keeping a diary to practice writing more.
I started writing in my diary before bed, and little by little, I started understanding what makes me tick.
Izumi
That’s wonderful. As an actor, there’s a lot of merit in introspection, and I believe that holds extra true for an actor like you, Juza.
(Going forward, I think this newfound self-awareness will really help Juza blossom in his acting by leaps and bounds.)
(He’s ready to hit the ground running.)
Juza
..
(When I was at my lowest, it felt like I was never gonna make it to this performance, but after rehearsal started, time flew by.)
(I’ll be okay. I’ll be okay…)
Audience A
The day’s finally here.
Audience B
I got so excited when I heard Juza was going to play the lead again, so I pounced on a ticket!
Juza
—
(Everyone’s been looking forward to this performance. All the staff have worked hard, and this play is the culmination of all the work everyone put into it. All of this work for this single moment.)
Actor A
“En garde, Yulong. Did you come here to lay your corpse beside his?"
Juza
"You have no right to speak to me like that."
Juza
—Tch.
Azami
…Wow, you look like shit.
I mean, I’m supposed to look bad since I’m a ghost and all, but you, Juza? Yikes.
Juza
U-Uh, sorry.
Azami
Yeah, no. Don’t slap your cheeks like that, you’ll only make your face look swollen.
All hunched over and laser-focused like that, geez.
Juza
??
Azami
Listen. This here is a magic brush.
Your little brother used this once upon a time. It’s pretty special, so use it carefully.
Juza
… Alrighty.
Azami
This really helped him, so I think it can help you too.
Juza
…Thank you. What you did back then and what you’re doing now, they both mean a lot.
Azami
Oh.
You don’t have to thank me for all that. I’m just doing this because I want to. It’s the same now as it was with him.
Juza
...
Sakyo
Let’s all get in a circle.
Juza
‘Kay.
I apologise for worrying everyone.
I won’t say I’m completely cured of my fear but… With everyone’s love and support, I’m sure I can get through this performance.
Banri
It’s fine, ‘kay? God, you’re so dramatic.
Even if you make a mistake, it’s not gonna ruin the whole play. I can’t believe you think you’re thaaat important.
Sakyo
We aren’t the same people that performed during our debut play after all.
Regardless of whether we succeed or fail, there’s no longer any debt hanging over our heads.
Omi
We’re all right here behind you. You’re not alone.
Taichi
No matter what happens, we’re in this together!
Azami
Well, I’m a ghost so I’ll be with you in spirit. Literally.
Juza
Y-You guys… Thank you.
Sakyo
Yeah, of course. I also have a message from Yuzo.
He noticed that you get very tense before the first show of any performance run, and that if you seemed tense again, you should shout at the top of your lungs to relax your muscles.
You look pretty beat already, so how about you give it a try?
Juza
Uh… Well… The audience is already seated, y’know. I don’t wanna freak them out…
Banri
It’s fine, I was scared to do it too. Don’t worry your little head about it.
So! With that said, you ready to shout your anxieties away?
Juza
Uhh, okay, something like this?
—AUTUMN TROUPE!!! LET’S DO THIS THING!!
Azami
YEAH!
Taichi
AHH!
Omi
YEAH!
Banri
Tch, so loud…
Audience A
Huh? What was that sound?
Audience B
A fan chant?
Manager
Shh, shhh, quiet before the performance!
Juza
Sorry.
Omi
Please forgive us this one time.
Taichi
Sorry!
Juza
(I can definitely do this. I will make sure I succeed, not just for me, but for everyone who put in their efforts to make this performance a success. I can do it—)

Juza
…
Bring on the light.
Akashi
Got it. Let me know if you want me to turn it off at any point.
Slowly, slowly… Gradually, I don’t want to startle Juza.
Juza
—Tch.
(I can do this…
Back then, I remember stumbling around frantically in the dark…
My past self…
For so long, I’d been drowning in the dark. I needed that light.
I’ve always, always yearned for the spotlight, dreaming of the day it’d illuminate the dusty corners of my life. My future was always in that spotlight, and every day I would stumble closer…
I needed the light to imagine a future for myself.
It’s almost mesmerizing, this blinding glare…)
Akashi
U-Umm, how was that?
Juza
…It was okay. I felt a little scared at first, but I think I can handle this. Thanks.
Akashi Good to hear it. Alright, then we’ll get started.
If anything changes and you feel uncomfortable, please give me a sign.
Juza
Will do.
If I can perform alone in front of the troupe, maybe this’ll be my first step toward acting normally again.
And if I fail… I still have tomorrow, the next day, and any day after that. They said they’d give me plenty of chances, which is a relief.
Oh, but then that’d mean I’d have to keep asking you for help. I don’t wanna burden you with my bullshit.
Akashi
That… That won’t be a problem at all, so please don’t worry about me!
The truth is, I… I like seeing you under the spotlight.
Juza
Huh?
Akashi
When they first appointed me as Mankai Company’s head of lighting, I had to manage the stage lights for a variety of different shows and actors.
Out of everyone I’ve worked with… You stood out to me, Juza. You’re special.
There are actors like Banri who can sparkle under the spotlight, and there are actors who can melt beautifully into the shadows.
But of all the actors I’ve met, your light is the strongest. You outshine everyone else in terms of pure intensity.
At first, I have to admit I was a little anxious. Your aura was so overwhelming I felt intimidated.
But I noticed how joyful your movements were under the spotlight, Juza.
There aren’t many actors who can appreciate stage lighting like that, so as the head of lighting, I was really happy.
I know I can’t really grasp what you’re going through right now, but after you perform your script on stage today, I think I’ll be able to understand you a little more.
…So I guess what I want to say is I can tell you’re someone who knows what it feels like to be in the shadows.
I think you can utilize your knowledge of the shadows to enhance your powerful light.
When I was studying lighting design, not only did I have to learn how light affects the stage, but also how darkness affects it, too.
I think you’ll shine even brighter under the spotlight when the time comes because you’ve overcome this darkness.
You’re someone who needs to call forth the light and keep shining on stage.
Juza
—
Akari
O-Ohhh, I’m sorry, I just talked your ear off...
Juza
No… Thank you for that. In fact, I feel like I understand lighting design a little more after listening to your wisdom. It’s my honor as an actor to learn from you.
I’m lookin’ forward to working with you today.
Akashi
N-No problem!
Kumon
Hehe, front row seats!
Azami
VIP section.
Izumi
Everyone, come take your seats.
Juza
…
Izumi
(There he is, Juza on a dark stage alone…
There’s only a thin sliver of light. It seems like it could disappear at any moment.)
Juza
—
…“Light,” by Juza Hyodo.
“Right now, I stand in darkness.
I do not know how long I have been here.
It’s been so long, I’ve forgotten.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve been squatting in this spot.
I can hear everyone’s voices. Far away.
The only thing guiding me is a thin sliver of light out of the distance.
But where I stand now,
Only a whisper of light reaches me.
And I cannot move my feet to approach this light.
The light in the distance sparkles.
Visible from here, even in the darkest corners.
Those chosen for the light,
They bask in its brilliance, but I too can feel its echoes.
Imagining my future…
I wonder… I wonder when it will be my turn to bask in the light.
If I am someday illuminated,
I would like to stand under a stage spotlight, all eyes on me.
Someday, I’m sure,
I would like to bathe in that wash of light,
Bathe in brilliance until I know of nothing else.”
Juza
…
Izumi
(Slowly the tiny ray of light is becoming bigger… It’s enveloping Juza’s whole figure.
Even without words, I can sense that Juza’s whole body is tingling with happiness.)
Juza
…Thank you, everyone.
Izumi
Juza! You did it!
Kumon
Nii-chan… T-That’s the Nii-chan I know!
Azami
Nice work.
Omi
You did great.
Banri
Level one, clear. Boooring.
Sakyo
I thought it was well done.
Taichi
Congrats, Juza!
Juza
…
(T-The light is… But I don’t feel scared.
The future my past self was rushing toward… I’m making that future happen, here and now, on this stage.
No matter what happens, no matter what obstacles stand in my way, I never want to give up my journey out of darkness.
I don’t have to be afraid anymore. The spotlight is where I belong.)

Izumi
Everyone’s here.
Okay, Juza, what did you want to talk to us about?
Juza
…When I was learning about stage lighting from Akashi, I realized I’ve been hiding from the spotlight ever since the accident during Yuzo’s play.
The memory of that night keeps playing on loop in the back of my mind. Y’know, during those few seconds when the spotlight washed over me… I was shaking.
Before that curtain call, I’d never felt scared to stand on stage alone.
All I can remember is how my feet were glued to the floor. The experienced actors saved me from my own hubris, but just today…
Just today, when I went on stage under the spotlight, I couldn’t move at all. Not even an inch.
If I close my eyes, I see it. The image is burned into my mind—the spotlight weighing down on my shoulders, the scent in the air, that intense yet insignificant moment…
Sakyo
Given that this is going to be a problem, I have to remind you that you’re the lead for the next Autumn play. Our first day of practice isn’t far off.
If this continues, it may be a good idea to delay the performance run entirely.
Juza
N-No—I don’t wanna cause any trouble for anyone. I-I… I wanna proceed with the schedule. Please.
Omi
I completely understand that you’ll feel guilty if we delay the performance on your behalf, Juza. But if you can’t shake your fear, I’m not sure we can proceed with our schedule.
Taichi
Juza’s the lead, so I’ll do my best to support him in anything and everything he wants!
Azami
Yeah, but how are we supposed to cure his fear of the spotlight?
Izumi
Hmm, that’s a tough one… There’s no easy, instant fix for trauma like this. This might be an uphill battle.
Sakyo
Not to mention we have a deadline.
Banri
So the issue is whenever he tries to stand under the spotlight, he’s frozen like a boulder, huh?
Taichi
What if we took away the spotlight?
Azami
Then the audience won’t be able to see the lead actor.
Banri
So what you’re sayin’ is he’s developed this fear of being under the spotlight alone. Yeah?
…Well, y’know, I guess we’ve only got one solution here.
Azami
Sounds like it, if I’m pickin’ up what you’re putting down.
Omi
Oh, the thing Banri did during Last Planet?
Izumi
…His portrait, right? Alright, we’ll give it a shot and see what happens.
Juza
Portrait…
Sakyo
When an actor performs a one-man show with nowhere to hide, the truth will come out.
Juza.
You say you’re worried about being able to act, but I think doing this could bring back your confidence.
Banri
God, it’s annoying when you’re right. If that’s what we gotta do, we’ll all be Hyodo’s audience.
Omi
Even if this doesn’t work, we’ll give you as many chances as you need until you’ve bloomed into your fearless self again.
Izumi
Yes, you don’t have to worry. Mankai Company is a theatre for our personal use. Even if you’re scared today, you can still try tomorrow, the next day, and any day after that… There’s no rush.
Taichi
You’ll get the chance to try out a whole bunch of things! And we’ll be at your back the whole way there!
Juza
You guys…
Sakyo
With that said, we’ve got work to do before we can begin rehearsal. All of us will watch Juza perform so he can shake his fear of the spotlight.
Juza
Thank you…
I’ll show you all that I can stand proud as an actor. I’ll definitely be able to overcome this in time for our performance.
Izumi
Like I said! You don’t have to rush anything. There’s more than one way to climb a mountain.
Banri
Hey, can’t you just do the same portrait you did before our debut play?
Juza
…No.
I’m a different guy from back then. In fact, this is something only the me of today can do. I can’t just do it like you, Settsu. My portrait is a self-reflection on my life, and no one else can tell me how to perform it.
This is gonna be a hell of an ordeal…
Banri
Ehh, well think of it as a new challenge.
Juza
...Yeah.
Izumi
We’ll be looking forward to it.
Azami
—
Juza
…
(Okay so... I gotta start with this box and—No, uhh.. I need a theme, right?
If I was looking at this from the perspective of my foil...
Ughhh, even if I sit here and spend all my time reworking my words, it’s not gonna be good enough. Okay, maybe I should write about the “spotlight”...
Man. I didn’t think I’d be scared just writing down my fears…
No no no, I gotta remember what Tsuzuru said. I need to keep writing so I can understand how I really feel. By writing everything down I can get my feelings out, that’s something, isn’t it?)
?
Kumon
Hey, Nii-chan…
Juza
What’s up?
Kumon
Well...
Azami
Brace yourself for this one.
Kumon
U-Um, well..
Juza
Huh, what’s that crumpled up piece of paper?
Kumon
Do you remember?
Juza
“Light”...? Did you really—?
Kumon
This is the essay you wrote in your 3rd year of high school.
Juza
Ohh, that’s right. My graduation essay.
(The theme was “Future,” but for some reason I got the image in my head that the theme had something to do with light. Yeah, something like that.
But it was too abstract, and I was ashamed so I threw it out.)
I thought that’d be in a faraway dumpster by now… H-How did you—?
Kumon
Actually I was curious why you threw it out. You were pretty sneaky about it. I’m sorry for taking it without permission!!
Juza
I had no idea.
Kumon
You poured your heart into this, and even though it was heart-wrenching for me to read, I thought it was a beautiful piece of writing.
But then, when the graduation ceremony came around, I was surprised to hear yours was different. More bland, more empty…
I kept wondering if you’d thrown it out because I interrupted you that one time, and I’ve always blamed myself. And so I’ve treasured this ever since…
Juza
N-No, I trashed it ‘cause it’s worthless. You don’t have to blame yourself.
Kumon
D-Don’t say that!
To be honest, I’m happy you wrote this. And even if I’m the only one who’s ever read it, I’m so glad at least one person got to hear your words straight from the heart.
Juza
…I can’t even remember what I wrote.
Kumon
I’m sure you’d be surprised by your own talent if you reread it! It’s really amazing!
I know you think the only thing you’re good for is acting, but you know what? That’s not true at all!
You have so much to offer from your heart, and I think it’s amazing.
I think you have a whole bunch of talents, but you can’t see them until you let yourself see them.
And I think you conveyed all of your heart and talents in this essay.
…Actually, I was shocked at how little I knew about my own brother. I claim to love and adore you more than anything, but I had no idea.
Juza
Kumon…
Azami
You wanna give this thing another read, then? Your feelings might’ve changed since high school.
Juza
—Yeah. I will.

Ren: You’re the same coldhearted bastard as always, Aniki.
Shaw: —
Ren: What, did you forget the face of your dear little brother, too? Color me fuckin’ shocked.
Shaw: Didn’t think I was invested enough to start hallucinating.
Ren: Too bad for you, but I’m not a hallucination.
Shaw: So you didn’t die?
Ren: Do I seem like I’m alive?
Here’s your proof. I don’t even have a reflection in the mirror.
Shaw: So you’re a ghost. Whatever, just go home. I don’t have any business with you.
Ren: I didn’t wanna see your crusty mug either, but for some reason, I’m forced to follow wherever you go.
Shaw: What a pain in the ass.
Ren: The feeling’s mutual.
Shaw: You’re still here?
Ren: Sorry about that~
Shaw: Y’know, I heard you died in a dumpster in the middle of the night.
What the hell’s up with that? Most people don’t die from drowning in trash.
Ren: Dunno. I don’t remember.
Shaw: If we can figure out why you died, we can find out why you became a ghost.
Ren: I told you I don’t remember jack shit. All I can remember is little bits and pieces from when I was alive.
Shaw: What a waste of space...
Ren: Give it up. Let’s get along, Aniki.
Shaw: Fuck off, why the hell would I get along with—
Member A: Boss? Who are you talking to?
Shaw: No one.
Tsk, people are gonna think I’m crazy at this rate.
Member A: What’s wrong? S’rare to see you like this.
Shaw: Hey, why do you think dead people turn into ghosts?
Member A: Ghosts!?
Boss, do ya really believe in that kinda thing?
Shaw: Forget about it.
Member A: I heard in a movie once that ghosts exist ‘cause they’ve got unfinished business from when they were alive.
Shaw: ...Hey, you said the police got wind of that issue from a while ago, right?
Member A: Oh, yeah.
But we just gotta find a scapegoat like always and—
Shaw: I’ll turn myself in.
Member A: Huh!?
Ren: Never thought I’d come back here again.
South Hill Prison feels like home sweet home.
Shaw: Good for you.
I’m just here to fix whatever unfinished business you have and get rid of you as soon as I can.
After being contacted about Ren’s death, Ren’s ghost appears in front of Shaw. Ren’s ghost can speak, but his memory is fragmented and he doesn’t remember how he died. Shaw, annoyed by Ren, tries to get rid of him, but even Ren doesn’t know why he can’t leave Shaw’s side. Shaw has questions about Ren’s death and wonders if there’s a reason Ren can’t pass away peacefully. To find out why, he goes to South Hill Prison, where only heinous criminals are imprisoned.
Shaw: How much do you remember?
Ren: Uh, a little bit?
Oh, I remember that guy. His name’s Douglas. We were close.
Shaw: Douglas.
Douglas: Hm?
You new here?
Shaw: You know ‘Ren’?
Douglas: Ren?
Shaw: He was my little brother.
Douglas: You’re Ren’s older brother? Now that you mention it, he did say he had a brother.
Shaw: I’m Shaw. Nice to meet ya.
Douglas: Yeah, likewise.
I’m sorry about what happened to Ren. It was so sudden, I was surprised, too.
Shaw: Actually, I’m investigating his death right now. Will you cooperate with me?
Douglas: Did something happen?
Shaw: No, it’s just been bothering me that he died in such a strange way.
Douglas: Got it. You can ask me anything.
Shaw: Even though you saved up enough money to go to college, you went and became an underling for a good-for-nothing gang.
Ren: Big talk for someone with blood on his hands. Hypocrite.
Shaw: It’s different with me. You really don’t listen to anyone, do you?
Ren: You’re the same as me.
Renato: The new guy’s been talking to himself for a while. We got another weird one in here, huh?
David: Think he’d be better off in solitary confinement?
Douglas: That’s Renato, and that’s David. They’re in charge of us prisoners. Whether it’s goods or information, if you want something, it’s fastest to go through them.
Shaw: Huh.
Douglas: Well, you’d best keep quiet and avoid standing out.
Renato: Miguel. I told you to do the laundry, didn’t I?
Miguel: Aah, I’m sorry!
David: Migue~l, take care of this too, won’t you~?
Miguel: Whoa!
Shaw: Who’s that?
Douglas: He trades in manual labor for money.
Renato: Hey, Miguel.
Shaw: That’s enough.
David: Huh?
Ren: Uh oh. He told you to keep quiet. You really don’t listen to anyone, do you, Aniki?
Shaw: Shut up.
Renato: What was that? You got a problem, new guy?
Shaw: I said that’s enough.
David: Okay, Miguel, you wanna stop business?
Miguel: N-no, I’m good!
Renato: Y’hear that? Stay out of this, newbie.
David: If you wanna do well here, follow the rules.
Shaw: Eat my ass.
Douglas: Phew.
Shaw: What’s up?
Douglas: Nah, I was just thinkin’ you really do feel like Ren’s older brother.
Upon entering prison, Shaw first talks to a man named Douglas who Ren was on good terms with. The man has a wide network and offers to help Shaw out after learning of his relation to Ren. Two other men, Renato and his right-hand man David, exert control over the group of prisoners. Douglas tells Shaw that asking for their help is the fastest way to get info. Unfortunately, Shaw quickly earns their ire after protesting their harassment of Miguel. Douglas, although shocked, ends up laughing due to the stubborn streak shared between brothers.
