               IF YOU WANT THINGS DONE RIGHT, DO THEM YOURSELF.
      A phrase from another world, apt for this situation. The HERO OF TIME could do nothing. A useless tool in a useless game, played at by the divines. From beneath the Clock Tower he rises into the world, a behemoth on two stunted legs. The world continues around him, in spite of the moon longing overhead, a face not even a mother could love. He is always in awe of this land, this unfortunately named Termina, as he is in awe of any others. He is stared at as he makes his way through the town, shuffling on pave’d roads without a care in the world, hands wringing themselves together. HE IS HE IS HE IS.
       The forest. Trees breathed into life by a goddess -- it’s where he’s headed, where his work is needed. The journey from the town to the outskirts of the forest was brief, and the sky up above groaned in response to his presence. The moon hung over head seeming to stare directly at him. He rose his gaze, all smiles and mystery, to the face; lips parting, once, twice.
            ‘ Kon'nichiwa. Matadesu ka. ’
      All without opening his eyes. His gaze falls back to the line of trees ahead, and his journey, slow, shuffling, begins once more. One step, two step, one step, two step. A rhythm for the world’s soul. The sky above is drowned out by the copse of green, of trees more ancient than perhaps even he. But. . . that’s a secret. He is ancient, hunched over, wrinkles sinking into his skin -- bag filled of masks and relics and maps and books and weapons and gods placed squarely on his back. He is stronger than he lets on. HE IS HE IS HE IS.
      The forest. He has been here before. THE CALAMITY. He knows his way around, he knows where that bastard little imp is going to be, and it is not for lack of trying -- he simply knows. His steps are slow and deliberate, here, until his journey is satisfied. . . feet filled of aching and longing. AHEAD OF HIM. The imp -- no, no longer the imp -- just a scared little god hiding from the truth. The imp turns, faces him, it speaks in a voice that is neither the god’s nor the imp’s -- like his feet, it, too, is filled with aching and longing. If he wants a home of his own, the Salesman would be happy to give him that.
              ‘ The boy has failed. He doesn’t believe in himself. He is still searching for his friend. Let him. This is my task and mine alone. ’

              ‘ It is easy, isn’t it? To possess someone so weak-willed, so full of self-doubt and loathing? The other gods must be having a riot. ’

@terminalfate wants to play !
                 IT’S BECOME MORE AND MORE COMFORTABLE to just allow the mask to take over. it is the skull kid’s BODY that orchestrates this all ( I AM POWERFUL ), the skull kid’s VOICE that booms the threats ( I HAVE POWER ), the skull kids TRICKS that are exaggerated ( MAJORA’S ULTIMATUM -––– PLAY OUR GAME OR DIE ! ). it is the skull kid’s loneliness that FESTERS like a wound in salt water.
                  YOU ARE NEVER ALONE WITH ME.
                  the velvet voice is in their head. skull kid nods despite the fact that they do not need to and KNOWS it. if the mean world doesn’t want to play skull kid’s games, they are FINE with destroying it. good riddance ! you hear me, guardians ?GOOD RIDDANCE !
                  YOU FOOL ! PAY ATTENTION !
                   the harshness of majora within them startles skull kid, making them stand with a straight back and tense. taking the moment, they realize a different feeling. SOMEONE HAS JOINS THEM. turning around, the face of THE MASK SALESMAN is there in front of them. an audible gasp is let out, and there is FEAR, FEAR, RUN AND HIDE IT’S HIM ! but majora has skull kid hold their ground and GIGGLE, taking over control completely within the skull kid’s fear. they were fine with it.

He also exhibits a flaring temper - he shakes Link violently from the neck when Link returns without Majora's Mask, and he has hysteric, unnerving fits. He seems to be largely benevolent during the course of the game, seems genuinely worried over the damage the Mask could wreak, and seems satisfied when he discovers that Majora's spirit has been driven from the mask. However, his motives are never explored. Furthermore, he seems to have willingly freed Majora's Mask, which shows questionable morals. His knowledge of the mask and his efforts to uncover it imply he was not worried by the threat it posed, and he seems only to have become concerned after he beheld the accursed object. It is never clear what he plans to do to the mask (or whether he has already tried to do anything). It is implied that the mask gets the Skull Kid to steal it, which indicates it was in some way restrained or unfulfilled under the possession of the Happy Mask Salesman.

meta: i don’t think the HMS’s true goal in MM is to get the mask back, rather -- I feel as if he let the mask get stolen on purpose. he tells the story of the mask to this lonely kid, who was probably paying the utmost attention to the story, and then the mask is “stolen” and -- yeah, sure, he’s upset. But what i feel lies deeper beneath the surface is that he wants everybody to believe. Believe in what? Even in OOT he makes reference to ‘believing in one’s self’, and in MM it’s even more prominent in his conversations with Link. we know so little of the HMS in all the games he appears in that it could be possible he’s more than just a man selling masks. in OOT he practically tells link that he’s selling the masks to make people happy, and.. that’s what they do. so, while he knows the dangers of the mask and the trouble it’ll bring, i do think it was intentional -- at least in some form or another. he feels like for link to progress further in his quest(s), he needed him to believe in himself, what better way to do that than to drum up some calamity? and at the same time, he needed the skull kid to believe in himself -- even if it meant being possessed by Majora -- because after all, he is the Happy Mask Salesman.
*** keep in mind i haven’t slept yet and this is going off of a decade’s worth of not having played the games to their fullest extent lmao
