Novak looks for a new beginning
When the Montecarlo Masters started a few weeks ago I thought clay could be the surface where Novak started playing like his old self again. I thought the extended break from play and the energy that playing and winning for his country in Davis Cup bring him would be enough to help him regain his confidence. I was wrong.
At Montecarlo we watched how match after match he would complicate situations that seemed controlled, how he would make bad decisions that cost him key points, matches he was winning easily get away or almost away from him. The tennis is there, all the things that made him win 4 Grand Slams in a row are there, and for stretches of time it seems like they are there to stay, but suddenly, unexpectedly, something in his mind changes and he starts looking like a different player.
This is actually similar to a period of 2015, when routinely his matches would become more complicated than expected. The difference is that back then you knew he would always find a way to win, right now that's usually not the case.
The positive side is that it's all in his hands, even if at the moment he feels like nothing is working. A couple good wins and everything could turn around. The question is when will it happen. This year? Next? Is hard to know. Nadal 2017 is living proof that you can't discount a great champion, that momentum changes in a tennis career as suddenly as in a tennis match.
That said, will the decision to part ways with his coaching team help Novak? The news were definitely surprising, he has tried to add new perspectives in the past (Todd Martin and, of course, Boris Becker) but never completely parted ways with his core team.
The emotional impact of such a big change could help him, as he puts it, find a fresh start. Only time will tell.

Thiem is one of my favorite players from the “new generation”, I love his one handed backhand and I wish that he wouldn’t stand like 4 feet behind the baseline when he plays on clay (even though is his best surface and both his titles have come on the surface), but most of all I love how grounded he seems to be.
He hasn’t had a big breakthrough that has made everyone talk about him, like Kyrgios did, but he has been steadily climbing in the rankings (up to 24 with this win) and getting better. Borna Coric has also done the same (he is up to 33 in the ATP Rankings) and I like this approach better.
Federer, Nadal and Djokovic are amazing players, but there are a lot of really good players out there, what really sets Djokovic and Federer apart right now it’s their ability to be consistently good. Hopefully that’s the road this young players are taking.
In another note, is funny that even though he is best friends with Gulbis, the most scandalous thing Thiem has done so far is dye his hair blonde, it kind or reminds me of Roger’s blonde hair when he won the Orange Bowl.

History in the making
As you all already probably know, Serena Williams won her third Grand Slam of the 2015 season at Wimbledon and is just one tournament, 7 matches, away from being the first tennis player to win the 4 Grand Slams in a year since Steffi Graf did it on 1988.
A lot can be said about Serena's athleticism, about her tennis, longevity and ability to keep winning against the strongest of rivals, but what really fills me with awe is to know we are lucky enough to enjoy watching one of the greatest tennis players of all time.
In 20 or 30 years we will be able to say "I saw Serena Williams play", "I saw her win the Serena Slam". In less than two months, we may be watching Serena Williams make history and just for that alone I can't help but want her to win.
