E.J Sue’s “Mechaforce” is one of the few “How to Draw” books I would point newbies looking to get into drawing robots to. It emphasizes knowing the basics (Very difficult to draw a robot properly if you can’t use perspective) and fundamental shapes and even arm techniques, and gives a neat insight into how mechanical forms work in art.
These are just a few of the examples from the anatomy section of the book. It’s currently on sale on Amazon and worth checking out, though I will note it is not a “be all end all” resource, thankfully you can fill in your knowledge gaps elsewhere.
Also since this is popping off please consider taking a look at his Tumblr! right here at E.J Sue Art

what brushes do you use?!
I use Paint Tool Sai (Primarly Version 1, but i use Sai 2 for larger things- but I could never get my brushes to work right so its sparingly) So my brushes are just modified versions of the exact same textures with the different settings. I havent even changed the names on them.
Theres really two "versions" i use, one is just a flat width somewhat crayon like brush that I've used for most of my lineless stuff (Although I've used it for scratchier lineart too, mostly just by setting the brush size real small) and then I've also started using one thats the same settings but has pressure-based width variation for lineart & doodles.
Overall is very boring, unorganized and simple answer... And yes the texture i think was originally made for rendering skin textures and I've used it for something else completely for years haha.
