This is an extraordinarily powerful performance by Nina Simone of her first civil rights song “Mississippi Goddam.” This song captures Simone’s response to the racist murder of civil rights activist Medgar Evers in Mississippi, along with the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing in Birmingham, Alabama (which killed four young African American girls). Though unfathomable, the powerful message in this song still resonates with us today, in the year 2020, as racial injustice continues to flood America.
