the way marvel avoids any sort of character development and just regresses + resets established characters to do the same things over and over...
there's been like no development or profession for that corner of legacy like the past 15 years , esp from secret empire to sentinel of liberty (+ the announced WS thunderbolts + SR Cap that look so rehashed). since spencer + smith and now lanzing (who keeps getting hired to terrorize these characters with his awful misinterpretations) all they do is gut characters of their personality + traits + retread old storylines but worse this time and in ways that fuck up the OG established Hydra/Nazi/WW2 lore (which wasn't perfect to begin with cuz USians are very historically revisionist but omg the retcons + regressions are so ahistorical and lowkey denialist)
like for the love gd at this point I'd rather marvel do a hard reboot of these old ass characters and admit they're just telling the same stories over and over(but worse), cuz marvel clearly doesn't have any clue what to do with them beyond the first couple of stories (+ they're too far up their own Americaness to imagine any sort of actually character development beyond captain America + winter soldier so they're eternally stuck with no progression)
look anon your random rants on my ask box are fun but i have yet to see you responding to what im replying and this is kinda polluting my ART blog, which is meant to showcase my art. So I'll be turning off anon, but if you want we can actually chat about Cap comics with your acc account in my other blogs

ik the marvel space can be homophobic but that on side of cbtwt fans pulling up old posts celebrating the legalization of gay marriage by relating then to marvel characters and then making fun of those tweets under the guise of hating ships seems cruel :(
what are you talking about? /gen

The CBMedia audience isn't typically known to be the most politically adept, but the way marvel fans in particular will rolls their eyes at actual journalists pointing out the military propaganda, just to then turn around and at shit like "Captain America represents the best parts of the USA: Liberty Freedom Truth Human Rights Progress~~~"🙃   As if that isn't just downplaying and whitewashing (pun intended) American Exceptionalism
They're so obsessed with claiming the legacy of Stan Lee creating proto-Steve Rogers to punch Hitler, but ignore how many Americans & the government supported/tolerated Hitler at the time of that comic being published, or how the genocide of Native Americans and chattel slavery in the Americas (esp the Caribbean SouthAm & USA) inspired Nazi Germany's ideology, or how the Nazis were rehabilitated and brought into the EU & Americas to continue to terrorize colonized ppl.
Stan Lee as an individual may have had a progressive and disruptive vision when creating the concept of Captain America as an idealized wish/plea for the US during the 1940s, but the corporate Marvel we know uses to paper over actual history and paint a falsified image that America did not actually live up to.   And really, the fans who parrot/go along with the "Cap represents the best of America" mantras either unironically love the propaganda or shoot themselves in the foot when they grumble about awful character writing. If they were as politically aware as they think Marvel is, they'd realize that the need to ensure that more Cap propaganda and American Exceptionalism gets churned out is why the stories never grow or develop in a meaningful way, since any progress has to be limited so that the Aryan White Man puts on his Propaganda Supersuit.   Just like how the USA was far closer to Nazism historically than how the state paints itself, Marvel's stories and rewriting of stories limited and twist themselves and end being the more like what Stan Lee originally meant to criticize.
Hello again, anon! I'm now almost officially on break so I can post your asks! But I think you may have your history wrong, and history is a major part of understanding a character such as cap!
Firstly, even though people like to deny it, Stan Lee didn't have a hand on creating cap, I don't think he ever worked at marvel at the time! His creators are WWI vets Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, from families of Jewish immigrants. Cap arose as propaganda against fascism, meant to rally the public against the nazis and on support of the allies before the U.S. officially joined the war. I was thinking about this just now, but what Cap represents is the dream of jewish immigrants in the 1940s and men who had seen war upclose, the dream of what the United States could be, a new home where people can live free of fascism, and that's how the best comics portray Cap.

every version of tony is so irritating both in canon but also fan spaces bc of how his shipping presence and how it feels like every tony/XYZ shipper seems to hate the other character and dgaf abt their own stories/personality/arcs and wants to punish and flatten the other character to a sex object in a billionaire fantasy where everything has to serve tony and no one else
but anyways... that blonde yt lady emma's the worst so I unironically pray this is endgame/long term and they destroy each other's characterization and stark industries & hellfire both burn to the ground im tired of these annoying wealthy honkies getting in the way of better stories and development jus bc marvel+its fans have bad taste lol
better yet I hope they mcu synergize and [redact] him but without the jesucristo cosplay self-sacrificing bs just [redact] him period im tired of him and the fanbase he attracts
Gonna say anon (kind of no longer anon!) this is your best ask in a while. I used to hate tony stark much more than I do now, I mostly don't care for him though I want to see him get beaten up for how he treated my girlie Wanda during The Dark Ages™ (late 00s and early 2010s)
As for Emma. Lol I fucking hate her. Actually no I don't hate her, I hate the direction her character's been taking since like the 90s. She kicked ass as a villain and her whole character is shaped like the one of a villain and yet. She is written like *that*. And treated like *that* by the fandom so I am also rejoicing at this wedding out of pure, old good schadenfreude.
As for fanbases. Yeah they SUCK. Idk what's in the water of the fans of Marvel male characters but ooohh they can be the worst so much. Specially for big guys like male Avengers like Thor and Tony and male X-Men like Scott and Logan.
Btw what's up with the lava motif of this side blog /positive

it feels like marvel hates that ed brubaker's story made bucky into an actual character - een tho it's p much the only story that left lasting impact on gen audiences - so they keep reducing bucky narrative-wise lore-wise even powerscaling-wise (which also shrinks steve cuz making bucky into an actual character also gave steve a foil, there4 giving him depth and complexity beyond a cartoonish persona)
it's like marvel is threatened by the idea of bucky having his own character arc and development and character depth and exploration of his own heroism, so they keep finding ways to reduce him down and regress him into a villain and/or non-character that's only there to participate in other characters' stories, all while flippantly giving no regard for established characterization and just throwing whatever.
lowkey think the success of the mcu's adaptation of brubaker's story pissed them off more, bc that one took the concept brubaker's story elevating bucky into an actual character even further and made him bigger & stronger & more important to steve's story, serving as the heroic steve rogers figure in steve's life before steve actually became a hero, like an example for steve to follow - and even making him a foil for steve as in "imagine the same guy but the world treated him differently" as part of a political allegory. that adaption made bucky "too important" and big of a figure in the fictional-universe and the narrative, and marvel started scuttling the character in both cinema and comics after seeing the effect and changed course drastically.
now bucky's character constantly gets nerfed down from someone who had the physical capability to go head to head with Steve (or even take down) to someone who's shrunk down and mostly faces off regular unpowered humans as an attack dog at best or treated like a normal civilian at worst. from a character that was set up for a full hero character arc as a protagonist and central figure to having that arc reverted (or precluded) and at best serving as a grunt to other characters or pushed off screen entirely cuz marvel decides the guy enslaved by nazi mad scientists is too evil cuz of that and can't directly be onscreen with the other characters, instead getting treated like a specter.
it's like marvel hated bucky becoming an actual character, so they're almost like wanting to find a CB-esque in-universe retcon button to revert him back into a dead non-character that can be replaced by a teddy bear, but in the meantime they fuck around and do anything to find ways to reduce him in the narrative and brush him out of the way without fully committing to it.
Idk what to add to this one but go off anon I hope you tell me who you are one day I love your takes

lowkey hold my tongue on this for so long bc sometimes i feel like im making it up but so much of "open minded" comic fan spaces online seem just as homophobic as the stereotypical dudebro fan spaces tee bee aich
like sooo many of them seem to get so easily *incensed* when "canon" cishet characters are interpreted differently among fans and it feels so... weird like they do too much to "defend" canon cishet relationships and act like calling characters queer is "slander" or something.. like they don't say it out loud but that's the vibes i get from... certain corners.
and i dont think it's them being oblivious to how much corporate homophobia/misogyny/transphobia/racism/ableism there is in that franchise bc a lot of this seems to come from the more conservative sub-franchises and it's almost like they're reactionarily resisting the idea of these *old* old casts and titles and stories being updated beyond how they were created in those old timey comics.. that's why sometimes it feels like the vibes are identical to those dudebro bigot fanspaces, except without saying it directly
Yeah no I get you 100% it is SO weird when people get all up in arms about said characters coming out as queer. What I don't like is using non confirmed queer characters as representation or misleadingly recommending comics with them by saying they're "representation", because while the company and the creators don't say it out loud and proudly I'm not gonna give them brownie points. But yes if this is about like the spider-gwen trans headcanon I know exactly what you're talking about people ARE SO WEIRD about silly little headcanons and this goes beyond comics, people were losing their shit when Encanto came out and people were saying the characters were queer, they were even calling it racism! (Alexander Avila has a really good video on that topic btw)
What pisses me off the most is always this veiled bigotry, cause at least those open and proud bigots I know how to keep away from me, but then you have people who have the audacity to call themselves leftists defending racists and CIA agents and getting up in arms about queer headcanons and I'm like. I know what you are. But they always try to gaslight others who attempt calling it out. I hate that I feel like I'm screaming at walls

every captain america story either starts off (or gets turned into by later installments) like:
oh wow the US government has its hand in some sinister things that sometimes kinda reflect IRL things the US gov did, creating room for an allegorical critique of the American project.... oops nvm, the evil things happening were caused by a "foreign" entity controlling everything or even puppeting the whole world from behind-the-scenes(& sometimes the way it's portrayed has... unfortunate implications on what kind of conspiracy theories & histiographies the writers consume) and it conveniently shifting the blame/critique away from USA onto some cartoonish figure to destroy to save America's fweedom and image.... And sometimes we pick a some1 to character-assassinate and turn evil for shock value and everyone gasps at how they're threatening America and the shield's "purity" that we are forever agonizing over defending no matter how much evidence in-universe and IRL there is to give up on the stars-and-stripes
obvs it's not the most important rzn, but another rzn why am*rica needs to be *********** in a ********** is so that these flag-drooling cap stories can finally end & (if the stories even continue) the characters can finally progress and develop beyond this Samsara of Undying Americanness
Oh hi again! Extremely real!!! And it's so so disheartening seeing a character / franchise that began as a push against fascism and Nazism become this hypocritical and a tool for bigotry like antisemitism through the years. I mean just the news of the new Cap movie.... Ugh. Also idk if you know but the ask box in my main is open! I only turned off anon bc I kept getting weird messages from terfs

feels like some marvel fans took the criticism of the franchise+fans reducing Black characters to serve white chara's stories/reducing/degrading them into sidekicks/"XYZ is a Good Bro"/"therapist-ing"/etc & completely didn't absorb the actual meaning of the critiques and just decided that doing that to Black personages is fine when they make it a part of an interracial ship (with a white person)
like the way Black folks' critiques of the portrayal of Sam Wilson (both in comics + live action + fanworks) just does not get soaked up at all by marvel stans and instead they argue over which white person to make him an accessory to (Steve or Bucky or even Sharon/Nat). All while ignoring the one Black woman in the cap franchise (Misty Knight) who Sam's actually connected to like that and instead put on the misogynoir and treat the one(1) BW like an inconvenience (both by fans and sometimes even official material that they quote/mine for evidence to back up their misogynoir)
the singular Black woman gets treated w/o a single thought in the quest to decide which white character gets to declare Sam the Black Best Friend and/or interracial ship material. And these fans don't put on those goggles so much that they don't realize that Sam in canon isn't attached to those white ppl like that on the contrary they often ignore the antagonism in canon to instead drown in fanon
the only exception rlly is Sam's earliest comics during that (very poorly aged) era of marvel where he was truly treated like nothing but a sidekick to a white man, but for fans to ignore all Black folks' critique over the years of the racist writing in those comics to instead view the same writing as "ship material" is so strange to me & it rlly shows how much interracial esp w white prsnjs repeat racist ideas
the type of content and "interpretations" they put out, you can tell that these fans don't listen/care what Black folks' sentiments are on these portrayals of Black prsnjs in Marvel. they didn't see how much flack 2011-2019 MCU got for their token Black sidekicks to white men (with T'Challa being the only exception, there's a reason why every1 treated him like the 1st Black hero)
no wonder back in 2021 I saw a lot of these same fans get mad/annoyed when Black writers/non-stan accounts in general critiqued the terrible racial politics of the tfatws show. back then these same fans that seem to view Sam as interracial ship material got upset at Black folks "bashing" "Sam's show" when they pointed out the respectability politics and assimilationist and imperialist apologist politics.
they didn't get why Black folks critiqued the portrayal of Isaiah Bradley as a "bitter" Black man whose suffering at the hands of America get waived away by putting a statue of him in the Captain America museum. they were too busy pretending like they got a whole show dedicated to an interracial ship (even tho there where no shippy moments in it), and then got confused when the actors and directors expressed distaste at the ship + when the ship got "broken" up by having the characters be antagonist (just like they were in the show and b4 fatws too)
so many fans don't actually pay attention to Sam's canon portrayal bc they're too busy being weird abt interracial ships that they don't even understand the politics of the portrayal and why they get critiqued
then again, fans of a franchise named Captain America having a poor understanding of politics at best is not surprising, esp when finding half-not-horrible politics in that franchise is like searching for water in the desert, but it's funny (in a bad way) seeing ppl unironically repeat "Cap represents the good version of the US" + be weird abt the Blk prsnjs + be misogynoiristic at the one(1) BW + get confused at IRL Blck folks' criticisms abt the concept of cap... like wow, the propaganda really did a number on these people
I feel like this is the time to tell you I really don't read that much Cap comics (at least not yet, I really plan on checking out Sam's appearances later); my knowledge of these characters come from their appearances in Avengers books and the Brubaker run post Civil War. That said, go off (and I feel like I know exactly which posts you're referring to; but I didn't know to what extent they were representative of this problem -- cause I'm not on that side of marvel fandom). And I do think this tendency to sideline black female characters comes from the rooted mysogynoir present in today's societies, cause I myself can be blamed for doing that once or twice -- and I'm a black lesbian!!! But yes fandoms, SPECIALLY superhero fandoms and SPECIALLY marvel fandoms have such a huge gross tendencies to ignoring racism and mysogynoir and outright attacking black fans when we call it out. I've lost count of how many times I've said "hey btw Emma Frost is a character written to perform mysogynoir and it makes black women uncomfortable to see fans and creators approach her uncritically" and people at best blocked me or called me crazy or other insults at worst. It's why I'm trying the most to keep my bubble only amongst woc and my friends who I know are real allies.
P.S.: As a lit / language student engaged w/ activist movements it physically hurts me seeing the poor media literacy these people have and seeing them acting like they know what real political thinking and activism is because they read some mid comics written by white liberals who either also have no clue what activism and leftist thinking is, or are outright cops or worse

[goes back in time to when Ed Brubaker was first writing the winter soldier and tells him to give Bucky a buzz cut so all the fans (& some pros who work on his official content) who get weird/gross about him having "long" hair will finally stop acting like that w his appearance while mindcontrolled & tortured and remember that WS is supposed to be a "dark" echo-fighter-esque anti-Cap from the same background & "revived" from the same war to fight w personal connexns to Steve to humanize the character(s) and not use his trauama as some [redacted] material for their [redacted]]
theres_no_other_way_the_world_had_to_be_fixed.mp4
and while I'm back in time I should tell him to make Bucky Black too (oh wow it's alliterative exactly it's meant to be) imagine if they darkened his skin a little and passed it off as an artistic choice at first and when Bucky is free from the WS he changes his appearance and grows waves and that's how readers found out, I had a vision (pun unintended lol)
I don't get what you're saying in this one, maybe it's cause I just woke up, but a banger as always anon these brighten my day. Shout out to Bucky being hit with the blackfication beam
