2019 Photographer Promo Books
Due to the smashing success of my 2018 promo magazines - I’m back with version two. Making them always reminds me of being on the yearbook committee in high school where I first learned the basics of design. Are you an art director/editor or anyone who hires photographers - want a copy? Send me a message with a mailing address and I'll get you one.

James Bay, Victoria for Toolbox Design and Harbour Towers
In September I woke up at sunrise for three days in a row to shoot a variety of images highlighting the James Bay Neighbourhood in Victoria British Columbia for Toolbox Design and Harbour Towers a new rental development in the area.
The goal was to showcase a warm and inviting place to live, as well as some recognizable establishments that add character to the area.

This year has been the year of emails I can barely believe are real, and the one that started this little adventure for @explorecanada was one of the best. . A short little email turned into a week of excitement in both Vancouver and Haida Gwaii (a place I’ve been dreaming of visiting for years) and a whole crew of new and talented friends. . I was brought along as the stills photographer on set for #vacationsofthebrave a series which premiered on @amazonprimevideo this weekend, and brings Incredible Americans to Canada on life changing journeys. . I joined the crew in Vancouver at the Museum of Anthropology. The wonderful staff there gave us a little context to the history of the Haida People, and where we would be headed. . I couldn't be more proud of everyone involved, and so thankful I could make a small contribution. Thank you for having me along it was a dream job on so many levels. . Vacations of the Brave is streaming now in the US, go check it out. . @explorecanada @ogilvytoronto @frankcontent (at Museum of Anthropology) https://www.instagram.com/p/BqDQ_Tdh476/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=tjt34d4vysas

Quote
“As artists, we exhibit parts of ourselves, whether it’s our bodies, or things we make, or our inner lives in the course of interviews. We expose ourselves,” Fraser told me when I saw her at UCLA. While a desire to communicate is a key artistic motivation, a fear of being too direct or didactic also prevails. Fraser refers again to her favorite British psychoanalyst, D.W. Winnicott, who wrote an article titled “Communicating and Not Communicating,” which considered the case of artists. It analyzed the inherent dilemma between the desire to express oneself and the anxiety that it provokes, between an urgent yearning to be known and a more urgent need to keep parts of oneself hidden. “That conflict,” explained Fraser, “is central to a lot of what artists do.”

An Orca Skull - a southern resident if I remember correctly, and a rowdy teenager killed chasing after the ferry out of Nanaimo, BC they think. . Think about how big of a brain sat inside this head. This frame is part of a bigger project I’m just in awe that I get to photograph. #orcinusorca #southernresidentkillerwhales #explorebc #hasselbladx1d

Cape Town, South Africa. . Balcony wine with @brianvanwyk ... in the land of insane coincidences. . How we both ended up on the other side of the world working on completely different shoots in the same city at the same time is beyond me, but here we are. 👌 I think this means we will be friends forever

Chysoula Tsiknis of British Columbia, Stroke Survivor - Photographed for a piece on Spasticity in Macleans. . "Spasticity is a common disorder in stroke survivors, causing stiffness, and pain at points throughout the body in up to 40 per cent of patients. For one patient, it can display as a hand that cannot be unclenched from a fist; [like Chrys] for another, a stiff knee or painfully pointed foot. For almost all who suffer from spasticity, their daily activities are interfered with, sometimes in minor ways, but sometimes in ways that are quite debilitating . Chrys experienced a stroke in November of 2014 that radically changed the shape of the life she had been planning. . In a series on brain health that goes live today, in conjunction with Brain Health Awareness Month I wanted to share this set of portraits taken in Chry's home in Burnaby BC. To read her full story head over to @macleansmag (at Burnaby, British Columbia)

Construction site of the Nicknaqueet River Hydro project, in Rivers Inlet, on the central coast of B.C. . A Run-of-river project is a less intrusive way than a traditional dam of diverting some of the river’s flow to power a turbine, eventually returning the water to its source at the same speed and temperature at which it was taken. . In Rivers Inlet this is extremely important because it is Home to several spawning salmon locations. . This project when complete will provide 97% of the community’s energy use. Decreasing the risk of transporting, and the actual use of diesel to almost nothing. . Pretty incredible when it is all said and done. #canadac3 #explorebc #alternativeenergy

Today was everything I wanted when I became a photographer. . I went to bed with my fingers crossed the sun would be out, and I grabbed my sunglasses as I left the house. On assignment for Macleans I met and created a set of portraits of a man who is working so hard in our community for a story on mental health. I headed home for lunch, and then to the Royal BC Museum where I got a behind the scenes look at their specimen collections, as well as some inspiration and planning for a taxonomy based photo project. . The camera allows you into another world, sometimes far from home but sometimes like today in your own backyard. Today was everything good about my job in a microcosm. . (Also I got to see this a giant squid 🦑 which has not much to do with the rest of it but is just mega cool- I encourage you to zoom in on it)
