A few years ago I drew some concept art for a chill science fiction setting where some lizard botanists were studying a planet & ran into some retired space pirate wolves who were already living there, & they all decide to shrug and coexist. Then I got super distracted & didn’t draw them for a while. Here are Hawthorne & Zoom visiting a construction site for a particle accelerator being built in space around a planet. Maybe they had to make an emergency landing & wound up there, or maybe they took a trip there to check it out intentionally. One of the staff scientists is showing them around part of the construction site and telling them about how the accelerator will help them advance the field.
Any ultra high tech science fiction universe is honestly likely to have a few truly enormous particle accelerators that are built in space, somewhere or other, whether that’s important to the story or not. Particle accelerators can go to higher energies as they get bigger & bigger, which is key because some discoveries can only be made at high energies. So it will always be useful, even crucial, to increase the size of the ring. I haven’t seen any giant particle accelerators in space mentioned in a scifi story yet, & it’s such a missed opportunity that I had to at least make a sketch. I can’t think of any good free resources off the top of my head unfortunately, but this audiobook was a really good introduction to the science [xxx].
My sister could use some help! She and her husband struggle with various mental health issues, which has impacted her husband's ability to work during the pandemic. My sister is spread thin and I can't help as much as I'd like. I would deeply appreciate if you could even just share this post. Thank you!!
