6. Faithful John
Tumblr media
This week I am reading the 6th story of the Brothers Grimm fairy tales about a faithful servant helping his king kidnap court a princess.
We will see some literal swoon worthy art, an Oscar-winning acting performance by a trio of ravens, and a VERY questionable cure for fainting.
~~~
An old king is dying and calls for his servant Faithful John (is Faithful his first name and John his family name??). Faithful John is the king’s most favorite servant and got the name (aw drat) because he had been true to the king his whole life (I sense some serious foreshadowing here. 50 gold says something is going to happen that makes the king doubt Faithful John and feel bEtRaYeD but John the Faithful will remain loyal despite the king banishing him or throwing him in prison or feeding him to the sea monster or the like but Mr. John will be rewarded for his loyalty after much, much suffering. It better include a good retirement plan.)The king asks politely orders John to be his son’s foster-father so he can die without worry. John agrees and says he will be as loyal to his son as he was to the king (okay it’s going to be the SON who causes all the drama for John before realizing he royally messed up)...
5. The Wolf and the Seven Little Kids
Tumblr media
This week I am reading and reacting to the 5th Brother's Grimm fairy tale about a wolf attempting to eat a goat family.
We will see some questionable disguise choices, a game of goat hide and seek, and some family fun arts and crafts.
~~~
An old mother goat has seven kids. She needs to go the forest to get food (what, is the store there or something?). She warns her kids that the wolf might try to eat them and he is a master of disguise except for his rough voice and black feet.
Sure enough, the wolf knocks on their door pretending to be their mom but the kids recognize his rough voice and tell the faker to leave. The wolf then eats a lump of chalk(???) to make his voice soft. (WHAT. Is this a thing?? I need to look this up…)

4. The Story of the Youth Who Went Forth to Learn What Fear Was
Tumblr media
This week I am reading and reacting to the 4th story of the Brothers Grimm fairy tales about a young man who is trying to learn to shudder.
We will see many ways how NOT to scare someone, some fun and games in a haunted castle, and a courteous young man just trying to make sure everyone is warm.
~~~
A man has two sons. The elder (of course) was super smart and sensible and could do everything while the younger (of course) was stupid and could never learn or understand anything and everyone (rudely) said he would cause his father trouble (Ha, joke is on all of them. Little do they know youngest sons are always the protagonists of fairy tales and usually end up acquiring copious amounts of wealth and power BECAUSE they do not conform to society’s definitions of what is properly “smart”). The elder son was always “forced” (by who?) to do everything but he always flat out refused refused to fetch anything late at night or if it involved going to or by scary places, like churchyards and abandoned buildings since they made him shudder. They younger son was always confused by his brother going on about shuddering because such things never made him shudder...
3. Our Lady's Child
Tumblr media
This week I am reading and reacting to the 3rd Brothers Grimm fairy tale about a girl adopted by heaven then banished for acting her age.
We will see some next level couch potato-ness, a woman sticking to her convictions in the face of adversity, and a deus mother ex machina.
~~~
We begin with a very poor woodcutter and his wife and their three year old daughter. One day, the Virgin Mary (okay…) appears before the woodcutter in the forest and says she will take care of their kid for them in heaven. He accepts (obviously) and the daughter is able to live wonderfully.
When the daughter is 14 years old, Mary needs to go on a long journey (where? a business trip?) and so she gives the Keys of the Thirteen Doors of Heaven to the daughter to take care of while she is gone (which definitely does not sound like the beginning of a teen comedy movie)...

2. Cat and Mouse in Partnership
Tumblr media
This week I am reading and reacting to the 2nd Brothers Grimm fairy tale about a cat and mouse who are roommates.
We will see some questionable provisioning choices, the unique naming traditions of cats, and a sure way to win a losing argument.
~~~
A cat and mouse are friends and live together (somehow, because this is a fairy tale anything is possible). The cat says they need provisions for winter so they don’t starve. And their idea of provisions is a giant pot of fat (Yes, a giant pot of fat. Not, you know, actual food or anything). Since the giant pot doesn’t fit in their house, the cat suggests they store it in the church since no one ever dares to steal from churches (*stares directly into the camera for a good five seconds* …yeah about that. The cat obvious has never read any history ever.) and they will only come for it if they really need it...
1. The Frog King, or Iron Henry
Tumblr media
This week I am reading and reacting to the 1st Brothers Grimm fairy tale about a young princess who is assisted by a frog.
We will see some rare royal good parenting, amphibian table manners, the princess's baseball skills, and finally Mr. Iron Henry the Most Faithfulest Servant Ever of All Time.
~~~
“In olden times when wishing still helped one” (this is a fun alternative to “once upon a time”), a king has several beautiful daughters. Of course the youngest is the most beautiful of them all (fairy tale logic ftw) to the point where the sun itself was “astonished whenever it shone on her face” (she’s always glowing I guess)...

A katun is a temporary farmer’s or shepherd’s settlement in the mountains. Shepherds move into katuns to graze their livestock in the summer. The hut on the picture, like many of its kind in the Montenegrin mountains, is deserted and no longer used by shepherds. (bij Montenegro) https://www.instagram.com/p/B16e1l0irVb/?igshid=myamzpgg60fk
