I have this headcanon where Winnie gets married to someone she loves and ends up just fine, but doesn't talk to Gilbert or Anne again. Then, like, 15 years later, she randomly sees someone getting out of a carriage that she thinks is Gilbert, followed by a very red-haired Jem. So at this point, she's certain it is Gilbert and that he married Anne, given the red-haired kid.
Then, suddenly, someone in the carriage hands Gilbert two-year-old Shirley just as Susan comes around the corner holding Nan and Di's hands, followed by Walter. Winnie's eyes start to get wide as she's counting the growing collection of red and black haired kids standing around Gilbert. Then, finally, Anne slowly gets out, wobbling slightly as she tries to catch her balance as she's hella pregnant with Rilla. Gilbert catches her and says something to her with a sweet smile that makes her smile too.
Winnie smiles too, thinking that everything worked out just fine but also pretty happy that she didn't end up marrying Gilbert because, good god, how many times is he going to get Anne pregnant?!

Dragons come in Many Forms, even if the Knight stays the Same
She had most certainly broken it. She had most certainly broken it and Miss Stacy is going to want to have her head for this. After all, Miss Stacy had worked so very hard to acquire this most precious piece of machinery and Anne had gone and ruined it in her wonderment about it. She hadn’t meant to, of course, but that meant nothing with the damage that she believed had been done.
Oh, how was she to ever to explain this to Miss Stacy much less live it down?
"Anne Shirley-Cuthbert of all the trouble that you have gotten yourself into when your wild abandon has steered you clear of anything remotely resembling restraint this has to be the worst of it yet.“ Anne muttered aloud in utter frustration to herself as she paced the squeaky wooden floors of the schoolhouse.
”— And what trouble might it be this time, Anne?“ She heard a voice ask from the entryway of the schoolhouse.

Okay can we just talk about the letters for a second?
Like, of course I'm a little salty that two amazing confessions of love will never be read by the intended recipient because honestly those letters were both perfect. Like, first of all, they are very reversed to how you would think Anne and Gilbert would write. But that's why it's so great. The letters so telling of their feelings and also their understanding of each other.
Like, can we talk about Anne's letter being short, sweet, and to the point? Anne. The queen of flowery language and over user of adjectives wrote the simplest confession out there. Because she knows Gilbert. She knows he would appreciate her coming right out and saying it instead of burying her confession in pretty words.
And Gilbert? Quiet, thoughtful Gilbert practically wrote poetry for Anne because he knows she WOULD appreciate a lengthier explanation. It's honestly so perfect how he lays it all out there in a way that Anne would have definitely been able to see the sincerity of his words. Anne needs to hear that from him, especially with all the misunderstandings and her own issues with self esteem.
I just... ugh. I love it so much.

i love Gilbert’s little smile when Diana shows up. He’s like ‘ohh look it’s my pal Diana. pleasant conversation to come.’ Unaware of the literal beast that has been unleashed upon the heartache of her friend.

ALSO
Gilbert’s first look at Anne’s room is so precious. The way his eyes light up as if she is there with him. How he spends a moment just soaking in a most intimate part of her life. And though he’s never been there, it feels like home, because it’s hers.
yeah... that got me.

The significance of Anne’s beautiful hair in this shot. Half up, half down. She is transitioning into the next stage of her life, from childhood into adulthood, and Gilbert is right there with her, in love with the girl she was and in love with the woman she is becoming.

“Gilbert was as yet little more than a boy;
but a boy has his dreams as have others,
and in Gilbert's future there was always a girl
with big, limpid gray eyes,
and a face as fine and delicate as a flower.”

You ever think about where Anne started off vs. where she is now?
She was alone, and now? Marilla would be move mountains so make sure she's safe. Matthew is willing to stand up to anyone and anything to make sure she has everything she needs and desires. Diana is resolute in challenging herself and going against her family's plans, constantly inspired by Anne's passion. Gilbert would throw away his chance to follow his dream just for her.
This girl just stormed into their lives and turned them upside down in the best possible way, making them look at their surroundings with different eyes, and now they would all be willing to do anything for her. She's a force of nature I love her.
