Eren (E): What is it, why are you so flustered, Mikasa? *gasp* Don’t tell me, it’s the titans?!!

M: In the next service recognition party “laughing competition”, which will be held after the long distance formation training, I heard that you will be performing Manzai with Jean

E: Ah…about that… It was decided by the lot drawing… No choice about it..

M: Eren… You better give up on performing Manzai

can you do a meta on Mikasa? I keep trying to tell my friend that Mikasa has developed as a character but he just doesn't see it. Btw you write the most awesome metas. :)

Thanks anon! I’d love to talk about her. 

If I were to define a character arc in simple elements, I would use struggle that is the character makes physical effort shown to achieve their goals and suffers for it, a failure to achieve a want, and a set goal of progress towards a need. So you have efforts, the perceived goal, and then the actual goal. On top of that there is also character flaws, characters should constantly be making flawed decisions and those should bring about consequences, and often the flawed decisions and the perceived goal or the want go hand in hand. 

That’s a lot of terms at once, but I’m hoping they’ll become easier to understand when I lie them out with Mikasa.  Even though it might seem that she progresses little on a character front because of a great amount of stagnation surrounding Mikasa (mainly on her inability to let go of Eren), I will argue that all of these elements are still there. Before I get to anything on her progress though, I think it’s important to address why Mikasa seems the most stagnated out of the three main characters. 

From chapter six, or Mikasa’s standpoint early childhood she had already figured the world out in her eyes. The thing which it has taken Eren literally until chapter 90 to fully comprehend, Mikasa already knew to begin with.

See You Later, Eren

With all the time travel shenanigans lately we still have not got an explanation for the first scene in the manga, despite these chapters having already been connected to the present day (to you, 2000 years from now, from you, 2000 years ago). Due to the structure of the final arc paralelling the first arc, I believe that the meaning of Mikasa’s words will be revealed in either the final chapter, or the penultimate chapters leading up to the final. In other words these are Mikasa’s first words to Eren in the manga, and they will also be her last. Because these are the words she’ll say to him right after she kills him.

Mikasa’s Destiny and Mikasa’s Choice

This chapter is about Mikasa solving her character arc and it has very interesting similarities with the Lost Girls spinoff.

The spin-off is essentially Mikasa’s dream of how things would have turned out if her parents had not died. She runs in an ideal world where she lives happily with them, but is still given the chance to meet Eren.

However, even if Mikasa can literally control every aspect of that world, she is still not able to save Eren. She disbands the Survey Corps and closes the Walls Doors. Despite all this, Eren keeps trying to go outside and to leave her… and dies trying to fly away.

Here, there is a very similar idea:

Mikasa wants to escape to her “home” and sees an alternative reality, a dream where she and Eren have run away from war and Marley.

They are together, but things are not perfect:

Why can’t Mikasa stay there, but still, why is it important that she had a “long dream” about it?
