chainsaw man part 2 is in this weird place for me where i like. DEFINITELY think its worse than part 1 by a lottttt of different measures, theres something that just isn’t quite working there (pacings off, narratives got a ‘who’s the protag’ issue, both Asa and Current Denji don’t lend themselves to the tragic character tension that made part 1 work bc they’re both so fucking distrustful of others, etc.) but like. god damn it i love it in this visceral way that i DON’T love part 1.

it really is a gender thing first and foremost, none of the weird fucking dynamics that characterized part 1 are GONE (and i wouldn’t even want them to be!) but having the narrative weight fall so much heavier on a female deuteragonist to denji takes Fujimoto’s “fucking weird and problematic and almost ~queer~ (like in the academic overuse of the term) gender dynamics” bullshit and lets it blossom into Fujimoto’s “fucking weird and problematic and almost ~queer~ and fucking sick as hell, like if Kunohiko Ikuhara chewed on the Attack on Titan guy like gum and absorbed some of the flavor and texture but not so much the calories” bullshit. its great. its got this professional amateurity to it, misogynist feminism, highly experimental and too safe at the same time. its a delicious mix of soft & crunchy with a good blend of contrasting flavors carried along a less extreme flavor “bed” for the more outlandish ingredients.

thinking back to people comparing shonen author's portrayals of women back in the day and the outright glowing egalitarianism people attributed to akutami (Jujutsu Kaisen) versus the... People were overstating their case with Gege from the get-go (Nobara was *literally* 'women be shopping' AND 'shut up i don't care about sexism existing your being a bitch' and that second one was pretty central to one of the big things people pointed to as to JJK being 'progressive') but he was managing to pull off a degree of equity there. But just... steadily, steaaaaadily his consistent undercharacterization of women in comparison to their male peers just never STOPPED and it just accumulated and accumulated until theres only one fucking female character at play right now who isn't defined by her relationship with a man. PEOPLE WENT NUTS OVER A TWO PANEL ESTABLISHING SHOT CAMEO OF MIWA EVEN THOUGH THAT WAS CLEARLY JUST A 'oh god even the NICE people are being roped in with this shit' MOMENT BECAUSE OF HOW GOD DAMN STARVED THE NARRATIVE IS LMAO. not to mention the pacing biting this in the ass. Also the amount of lady fansiverice has increased by a not-insignificant margin over the years but in his case i really Don't think thats directly relevant he was underperforming even when that shit was minimal.

Meanwhile Fujimoto doesn't so much *improve* (ok he does actually i'll stand up for that. still got issues and developed a few more but like.... for all its issues both ~ethical~ and otherwise part 2's been muchhhhh better in terms of Bechdelling it up) as just keep fucking *going* and involving new women into the plot at an equal or greater rate than the male characters at this point and without any superfluous sexist shit BEYOND THAT ONE SCENE OF ASA ALMOST-NAKED AERGHGHGHGHHGHGHHG *smashes my computer with HAMMERS*. its literally like the tortoise and the hare up in here.
