Zack Nelson and SAM Bring Another Poly 318 to the 2018 Engine Masters Challenge
Engine Masters Challenge 2018, presented by JE Pistons
Zach Nelson is an instructor at the School of Automotive Machinist and Technology (SAM) and has competed in the Engine Masters Challenge three times. On the second time he won the Power Adder Nitrous class with a 360-inch LS that made 930 hp on a 200 shot, and 670 on the motor.
This year, SAM is running an engine in each class. The valve layout and the chamber design is what attracted Nelson and his team to look at the Dodge Poly 318 for the Vintage class.
Starting with a 1958 block bored 3.960 over, the engine displaces 404 inches using factory crank offset ground for a 4.100 stroke. Nelson uses Carrillo forged A-beam rods that are lighter than H-beam rod and a custom CP piston with a 24cc dome. The compression ratio is 13.5:1 with a 72cc chamber and a Cometic MLS gasket.
The problem with the heads are small and low ports, and overall weight. Nelson ported the heads to 295 cfm at 0.800 and added a custom T&D rocker system to correct the pushrod location and get a larger/stronger pushrod in the engine. On the exhaust side are 2-inch adapters to get 1-7/8-inch Cleveland headers to fit. The camshaft is a Comp solid roller with 234/246 duration at 0.050 on a 102 LSA, with a 0.800 lift driven by a Weber Machine belt drive.
The intake is a CID LS7 single-plane manifold that was cut in half and milled to match the intake ports on the Poly head then re-sized inside with epoxy. The carburetor is 750-cfm four-circuit 4150 four-barrel from Braswell Carburetor. The ignition is a MSD 7 box and a Jesel distributor.
The big pan is a 7-quart external wet sump that feeds oil to a Stock Car Products belt-driven pump then into a remote filter then into the block through the existing oil filter feed port, through the heads and back to the pan. The system fixed slow drain back and gets the oil away from the spinning crankshaft.
On the last pull, the engine started pushing water into the oil pan and through the breathers, Nelson added timing to save the run and detonated the electrodes and insulators off the plugs, ended the competition for Nelson and the Poly.

November 17 is the release date for Star Wars Battlefront II, the latest game in the Battlefront franchise. So I was delighted to see this new spot from BBH New York that pits a boy and a girl and their Star Wars rivalry from kids to young adults. The spot is charming, showing how each one-up the other at different points in their lives, finally ending with them as characters in a real SW fight. As an avid video game player and Star Wars fan, the spot is perfect for someone like me, who will end up following the Empire.
