the most original content in this is the simmering homoerotic undercurrent between yusuke and kuwabara. I never really saw it in the anime but there's def something going on there in the drama

cannot say they didn't go for faithfulness in the clothing and hair department

3 episodes in and botan is still...ditzy, kind of timid, and almost childlike. it's frustrating bc manga/anime botan was an upbeat, informative, confident, fun-loving older-sister character who cared about yusuke but also gleefully ribbed him. they had a fun dynamic from the beginning on since she was a character introduced so early on. and we just don't get that from this botan! I don't think the joke about her flying on an oar ever even came up and she doesn't even have any different outfits 😔

I did think kuwabara's sword awakening scene was really well done tbf. powerful and thrilling. ep3 is probably the best yet

I actually love that the hiei yukina situation isn't explained. this truly was a show for the fans who already knew what was happening

wait nevermind. I went back to finish the episode after all and I think I assumed he was alive bc HE LOOKS EXACTLY THE SAME AS A GHOST but he's not back YET

actually if anyone reading this HAS come into the yyh live action without reading the manga or watching the anime first, I'd love to hear your take on it. aside from the unfaithfulness of the story, I find the live action kind of awkward and overly acted and also way too understated somehow all at once. but obviously I'm not an objective viewer. the action scenes can be fun but they're not really the flavor I wanted from this show

yyu ep1 (part 2)
why does kuwabara look slender and delicate like a wounded gazelle instead of the 6 foot tall roided up 14 year old bursting out his uniform he was MEANT TO BE!!!!!!
this was supposedto be a liveblog but koenma literally sent yusuke back to earth instantly after yusuke did N O T H ING like I'm fucking sorry was his efforts to prove himself and hatch a spirit animal from his egg, leading to easily one of the most compelling and emotionally significant parts of his character development, not fucking enough?? NO PUU???????
NO FUCKNG PUUU???
I AM SO FUCKING MAD
I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO CONTINUE TONIGHT
FUCK THIS DECISION
FAILED ON ALL COUNTS
honestly if there's no puu and a hamstrung dark tournament arc what's the fucking point. yyh's soul is half heart half action. neither of these have been properly represented in this adaptation
WILL LIKELY TUNE IN LATER FOR HIEI KURAMA AND YUKINA
BUT
I
AM
NOT
PLEASED

starting off the final episode with a flashback to toguro was a really good choice. even with the cramped character time, they made a place for him. and I'm really glad his conversation with genkai in the afterlife was included - it was one of the few moments in the show the characters got a chance to breathe and it was such a good payoff. toguro may have been one of the few characters to get an actually well set up and paid-off arc

toguro does look appropriately freaky. he always looked creepy at 100%, even in the manga/anime. but um

that's not pneumatic pressure?

I really enjoyed ep4 I have to say. I still don't think it's especially good as an adaptation but I do have to admire the ambition of fusing three arcs together and kind of making it work. hiei's motivations are definitely much clearer and he has a more cohesive character arc. events do flow. on the flipside I'm not sure why kurama is here except he likes these guys I guess which is basically the case in the anime/manga too iirc
