Katsuki was smirking to himself as he sent a picture to Deku with the following text: "Good morning, nerd. Looks nice outside, doesn't it?"

Said picture included him fully nude on their porch with a strategically placed plant hiding an obvious area between his legs.

Izuku had taken a break from his usual morning jog in the park near his and Kacchan's apartment, when his phone suddenly buzzed to indicate a text came through.

Pulling the device out of his pocket, he saw that it was from Kacchan, and without hesitation he clicked the message to see what was sent --

However, the moment he saw the picture, his face instantly went pale before it lit up bright red as he quickly pulled the phone to his chest and looked around to make sure no one was nearby.

Sighing with relief, Izuku slowly looked back at the picture that the other sent as he replied back:

What was the point of two years ago?

He rushes past the receding crowd, past the faces of shaken children dressed in their evening best clothing. Some will be going to the red bean pastry booth by the entrance of the reaping. Some will linger at the edge of the square. Some will return to the safety of their parents’ arms. All are safe from the Capitol for another year. It’s a luxury that, even after winning the games, he’ll never have again.

There’s a stone anchored in his stomach, which is ironic considering that his head feels light. Dizzying as if someone has filled his lungs with smoke.

I won the Games. I survived their game.

His bag is slung loosely over his shoulder. He learned that the lighter he packs, the better- the less of District Three, the less of him the Capitol will find out and if there is one thing Patrick knows about the Capitol, it’s that they will take, take, and take until there is nothing left to take from, like a towel wrung of all the water it can hold. Ignoring the shouting from the head peacekeeper and the mayor of their district ( both of whom, he can’t help but wonder if they played any role in the selection this year- ), he slips past the peacekeeper guarding the room farthest down the hall.

It was the room he had been taken to when he volunteered for the games- Patrick never thought he’d see the inside of it again.

Fingers trembling, he grasps the doorknob. The rusted brass scrapes his right palm.

I did it so he wouldn’t have to.

Ambrosia’s voice keeps echoing in his head- the way that cloying voice called for Lee Hyuk and the way the silence in the following moments rang so clearly in tandem with his own silent screaming for someone to volunteer, it could have been even louder than Ambrosia’s voice.

And he never thought his dear friend would either.

He’s not going to make it.

He opens the door.

Inside, Patrick finds Hyuk pacing. Where are the other people, he wants to ask- where are Mister and Missus Nam? He would have thought they would be one of the few, if perhaps the only two who would want to say goodbye…it’s a stark contrast to the female tribute whom from what Patrick observed in passing, to have quite a few people coming in and out of her room. She’s lucky in that sense- knowing she has a family. Knowing that she is loved.

But Hyuk-

His hands are shoved inside his pockets. From afar, Hyuk looks no different than usual, a solitary figure with a permanent frown etched onto his face- they always said that if he smiled more he could actually be considered handsome. Hyuk would always snap back saying to mind their own business. It’s Hyuk’s default, showing a stony resolve in the face of adversity-

But Patrick knows, knows his friend better than anyone else. Knows from the pallor on his face, from the way he can’t sit still otherwise he never move again, to the way his jaw is set even tighter than usual-

For a moment, Patrick stares at him. He opens his mouth- what does he say here? How does he help his best friend who is about to be carted off to the Capitol as cattle?

Patrick closes his mouth. He can’t. But he swallows the lump into his throat and without warning, tackles Hyuk in a hug.

I failed.

He tucks his face into the crook of his dear friend’s neck as his hands grip the back of his button down for dear life. He squeezes his eyes shut, trying to calm the shaky breaths that come out. This is all Patrick is going to take. One moment of despair, of selfishness and then it’s all about Hyuk.

Patrick looks up and rests his hands on his dear friend’s shoulders.

“You’re not going to die,” Patrick says finally. “Not if I’m here.”

His fingers dig into Hyuk’s shirt. He doesn’t know who he said that for- for Hyuk or himself. That Hyuk is still here. That the Capitol hasn’t made a feast of him yet. No Hyuk is still here right now. They may have been given the worst cards, but the round hasn’t started yet. If played well, Hyuk might just make it through.

“I’m going to be your mentor; I know a few people in the Capitol- I-I’m sure if I convince them, they’ll sponsor you. They’ll give you the supplies you’ll need to survive in the arena. You’re strong and you know how to fight- they’ll back someone who they think has a chance of winning. We just need to make sure you leave a strong impression. I’ll teach you everything you need to know about the Games. I know it’ll look like the odds are against you, but, but-” A shaky breath. The 54th Victor of the Hunger Games blinks, rapidly.

I don’t want you to die.

“We’ll get through this together. I promise, Hyuk-ah. We…you-“ He pulls Hyuk into another tight desperate hug. “You’re going to be okay; I’ll make sure of it.”

Any other day she might've WHIMPERED in pain from how tightly he was clutching her to his chest, complained about how hard it was to draw in oxygen, but today she couldn't get him close enough. If there’s any turian that wants time to himself after going on a mission that very well could’ve killed them all, it’s only been a day since it had all happened. Many of them very littered with wounds, there were so many close calls, but they were all willing to die if it meant stopping the collectors. Of course Garrus of all people, despite being scot-free in terms of injuries, his mental state from everything he’d seen there had taken quite the toll. Surely he’d be back on his feet, but combined with the fact he’s felt so shitty with how he mistreated Sidonis for all these months, and hiding away the guilt and his own wrong doings, the turian hides himself away in his old Citadel apartment away from the rest of the crew.

Moving himself away from everyone else probably wasn’t the best of ideas, but for the time being, they just need a day or two..or more away from everyone. There was a lot of celebrating when they all left through their exhaustion and medbay visits, but Garrus had mostly shut down following everything they had to go through. Even though there’s so much more they have yet to face. It’s...scary. Despite everything they’ve succeeded in, they’re terrified.

Terrified over the future, his past--his mistakes. All Vakarian can do is just sit there in his own thoughts for the amount of time that he needs to, and then move on, to continue trucking forward into the unknown. Until then? His subvocals cry, and soft trills emit from his throat. This is the first time he let his guard down since the whole time he saw Sidonis, how terrified they were of Garrus--and how surprised they were to see Garrus be the one apologizing for everything. He just hopes that someday he can just find Sidonis again, and.. let them know he’s alive.

A small huff as he pushes himself onto the stiff bed, it’s all been kept tidy by someone. He can only debate who exactly it would be, but, Garrus, in an exhausted state, isn’t even able to slide off his armor, not that they want people to see what sort of hell he’s put his own body through these last couple of months, that would be if anyone even visited him in the first place. Everyone’s out doing their own thing to take their mind off of the hellscape they’d all put themselves through for the sake of this galaxy..

The Turian pushes himself up against the wall while sitting on his bed, ruffing the pillows, trying to get comfortable as he sets his omni-tool down, immediately calling his family on said omni-tool. He doesn’t expect his suffering mother to pick up, all the money he made went towards his mother, so when his father, Castis picks up, Garrus isn’t really surprised all too much.

[ “ / Spirits, Garrus, why haven’t you called at all?! / “ ]

It’s all Garrus can make out from his father’s voice as they start the call honestly pretty spaced out. There’s a big chance that he didn’t hear everything, almost certainly haven’t. Garrus lets out a long, low sigh, Castis almost feels their exhaustion, it’s intoxicating, in a bad way, of course. The older turian looks at their disgruntled, tired son through the omni-tool.

“ Is she doing better? I..Is the treatment helping? I had..Mordin send over some stuff that could help her--”

[ “ / She’s... / “ ]

The fact that Castis isn’t answering right away, the fact that they’re unable to give him an answer? That’s terrifying. He’s terrified. His expression grows worrisome. For a moment, they stop caring about all of their mental wounds from the suicide mission to fully focus on his father, who’s unable to comfortably give him an answer on how his mother is doing with Corpalis Syndrome. A few moments of silence pass between the two of them.

“ Not good, then. The usual answer would’ve been acceptable, Castis. “

[ “ / I understand, Garrus. You’ve been putting everything you own into helping her. / “ ]

“ Why... Why did it have to be her? “

It’s been causing him so much torment for all the money and treatment in the galaxy to still be not enough for his illed mother. It wracks at his heart even more than his current feelings of anguish and sorrow. His own mistakes wracked up on top of how his mother is doing. He’s been barely able to survive himself because most if not all of the credits he’s gained has gone towards his mother’s treatment.

Castis can tell Garrus is freaking out about all of this. Why though he’s not too sure, he’s been busy working with Ryder and push the Andromeda Initiative forward. If Garrus’ rambles and work alongside Shepard is anything to go off of, these Reapers are very much real, and they’re very much coming, they have to leave and it’s going to have to be very soon if his son’s warnings are anything to go off of.

His father intercepting his needs to transfer more credits to his mother’s treatment sends a frigid spike of air down his spine, his subvocals scream discomfort, nigh close to losing his sanity over just wanting his mother to be alright. Why can’t this go right? It all feels so hopeless. Before Garrus even wants to reply, they end the call, leaving his father hanging, a shaky breath followed by sobs is not surprising for the turian.

To be completely overwhelmed by emotions from everything that’s happened this past month alone has been enough to drive anyone mad. His subvocals try, he could cry a waterfall if Turians could cry tears like other races could. In the lightest of terms, Garrus is at his utmost limits and the lack of shit he feels he can do is pushing him over those unspoken limits. As the minutes pass, Garrus feels utterly lifeless in the wake of the idea that his mother isn’t worth putting more funds into. His father was more stubborn than he was..

Knowing that his father was putting in the towel for trying to save her, it hurt him more than anything else. Sure, Corpalis Syndrome had no cure, but.. he had to continue trying to save her, he had to keep on pushing...but.. Garrus wasn’t sure there was anything left for him to do. It felt so fucking hopeless, spirits forbid he wanted to see his mother healthy and happy, but no. A stupid fucking illness had to take all of that away from her, had to take away so many happy memories and the treatment had run Garrus dry for well over three years now.

Combine that with his crumbled mental state, and you get a turian breaking through the seems. He’d think about heading to a bar but knowing him--it’s not a good idea. You’ll get drunk and cause a ruckus as you usually do when you’re depressed and fucking tired, Garrus. So he just sits there in his empty, somehow tidied up apartment and cries. Unable to think of anything else to deal with everything flooding and fogging up his mind at the current moment.

It just hurts.
