In our teaching night, Tito Jef Arong our Mission Area Pastoral Worker for Visayas, shared to us that in the midst of storms we are called to shelter one another in the ark of love which is our respective families. St Joseph was the head of the holy family.  When St. Joseph was betrothed to St Mary but before the actual marriage, archangel Gabriel appeared to Mary and announced the virgin conception of Jesus in Mary by the spirit of God. On knowing that Mary was pregnant, he did not want to humiliate Mary before others but wanted to divorce her secretly.  But, when informed by an angel of God in a dream that the child had come from the Holy Spirit, he accepted her. He belonged to the house of David. St Joseph was the son of Jacob or Heli. St Joseph must have been a poor carpenter.  Mary took only two pigeons (offering of the poor) instead of one lamb and one pigeon to the Temple for the purification ceremony on completion of 40 days of the birth of Jesus. God entrusted His only child Jesus to the safe custody of Joseph clearly shows the divine place Joseph got before God. He took Mary to enroll their names in the census, when she was pregnant. Joseph's Dream - Feast of Saint Joseph, Husband of Mary (YEAR B)

March 19, 2021, Friday SOLEMNITY OF SAINT JOSEPH, SPOUSE OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY - Principal Patron of the Universal Church (White) CYCLE B - YEAR I RDGS: 2 SM 7:4-5. 12-14. 16/ PS 89:2-3. 4-5. 27. 29/ ROM 4:13. 16-18. 22 GOSPEL: MT 1:16. 18-21. 24 or LK 2:41-51

Jacob was the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary. Of her was born Jesus who is called the Christ. Now this is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with child through the Holy Spirit. Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly. Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home.

Each year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the feast of Passover, and when he was twelve years old, they went up according to festival custom. After they had completed its days, as they were returning, the boy Jesus remained behind in Jerusalem, but his parents did not know it. Thinking that he was in the caravan, they journeyed for a day and looked for him among their relatives and acquaintances, but not finding him, they returned to Jerusalem to look for him. After three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions, and all who heard him were astounded at his understanding and his answers. When his parents saw him, they were astonished, and his mother said to him, “Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been looking for you with great anxiety.” And he said to them, “Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?” But they did not understand what he said to them. He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them.

GOSPEL REFLECTION:

The angel’s message came to Joseph in a time of deep distress and anxiety. Lord, when my problems seem heavy and impenetrable, May I recall that you are watching to help me even in the most unexpected circumstances. I must be still enough to hear the angel’s voice; courageous enough to act on it.

God, you give your help and guidance to those who trust in you. Where do I need your help and guidance today?

Today I thank God for Mary and Joseph, and I pray for all parents especially those struggling with problem children.
