Failure Bursts in Creative-Perfectionists

Updated 07/21/2020 - explain seed ideas, set out task sequence for harvesting seed ideas from Failure Bursts. 

One of the few really smart things I’ve ever made up was the idea  “You learn more from failing than you do from waiting. Except in parachuting.”

Let’s postulate two characteristics: Creativity and Perfectionism. These are inherently in conflict: Any new idea( creativity) is generally going to be imperfect (noooooo). Yet at the same time, on an intuitive level, we perceive there is a “seed” in some ideas. For instance, Steve Jobs, who in his short college career took a course in typography, came to really appreciate the beauty of fonts. I remember him saying in one interview that the WYSIWG features of the Mac OS ( on which I am writing right now ) would not exist if he had not become a connoisseur of (what became) screen type. 

I’ve been using my iPhone timer to reduce burning things while cooking, and I noticed that it’s easy to start the timer over. On the “time’s up” screen there’s a reset button that starts the timer over with the same duration as last used. I’ve just experienced this in the last week with the invention my Werkslice method.

But you can see the messy initial ideas in my crude drawing-posts from the last few days I’m in eluding the mess to help perfectionists get over their hesitancy about mess. Genius Ernest Hemingway was reported to have said “The first draft of anything is shit.”

 I tried to create a four-dimensional time management system in one day. Not realisti. The core creative advantage over the other time management systems I’ve learned of is that it de-emphasizes the idea of effort. Effortful work is almost a contradiction in terms But that's a separate essay. 

A Failure burst.is...?

A “Failure burst” is, first of all a good thing. It’s when a creative person comes up with a new idea made of a complex combination of elements, but then gets a sinking feeling of the work involved to operationalize the components. 

The problem is there’s a hazy but innovative vision of the interconnected components, and the creative  know intuitively the elements will work together-but they can't really fully visualize the way the whole system will work,  especially how it will work in order of execution/iteration.

What to avoid

Giving up on your idea because of the discouragement of realizing you can’t fully crystallize your invention( song, biz idea, painting, symphony, web app, car design without doing a lot more follow on tasks, and you can’t tell if those tasks are worth it until you do probably quote a few of them. 

If it doesn’t suck-How do I use it? 

1) Crystallize it somehow. Tumbr is great for this! One click text doc creation, someone else smarter than me handling backups. of the pieces of paper and a pen I picture below. 

2) Find the core distinguishing element that differentiates it from other similar, more fully realized systems. Look up prior research.  I believe my CDE is refined werkslicing: Experimenting pragmatically (with a timer to test how long you can actually work on something before attention flags) .  The worst problem of the creative perfectionist is trying to take on too much at once, and the whole thing falling apart. 

This is going to vary a lot. Mozart wrote over 40 symphonies over about 18 years. Hard as it is to imagine, it wasn’t THAT hard to organize each one-- 6 months average from concept to completion. For me, writing a song, just a simple song not even 1/100 of the complexity of a Mozart symphony takes on average 2-3 years. I can’t work continuously on it. I only have a few good ideas. 

3) Clarify. component interaction. 

4) Operationalize the use of the elements.

Open Word (Click Start, All Programs, Microsoft Word).

Choose a Web page style or let the Web Page Wizard guide you through the steps of creating a Web page. 

A Web page structure appears, in which you can click and drag to select a section to change, and then type text to replace the selection. Change the heading, and replace existing text with your own. Delete any existing text that you no longer need as a placeholder.

Change the attributes of any text. You can change text’s font size, type, or color, and apply any attributes, such as boldface, italics, or underline

To add a background color, click Format, Background and choose a color. If you want to include a fill effect instead of a solid-color background, click Format Background, Fill Effects.

Periodically save the page as a Web page. Click File, Save As. Click Web Page, give the page a name, indicate the location (disk and folder) where the file should be saved, and click Save.

WYSIWG, acronym of “What You See Is What You Get” and this is a static kind of page. There is a website or an app that helps you create a webpage in a easier way. This app is called ‘Jimdo’, it is a wysiwg web hosting service and it has an iOS and an android app.

HTM or Hypertext Markup Language is also a program that is used for creating web pages and it is the publishing language of the world wide web.

There are basic tools in creating web pages. The plain text editors (notepad), web browsers, and HTML reference book.

Simple HTML rules:

1. HTML tags are enclosed with brackets

2. Most tags require a closing tag
