FlamingoPulse's Soft Tumblr Debut (News intros from WVTV Milwaukee, WI)
This is FlamingoPulse. We are currently testing our Tumblr signal in an effort to get viewers tuned in to us on this platform.
For our pre-launch program, we would like to present to you, the news intro history of CW affiliate WVTV Channel 18 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The station has historically been an independent, but has seen plenty of affiliation changes from it's humble beginnings to today. And yes, this is the same station where that internet-famous 80s Autumn graphic came from. You can even buy it as a t-shirt.
youtube
WVTV signed on in 1953 as ABC affiliate WOKY-TV on Channel 19 by their radio parent WOKY (920 AM), but flipped to CBS & changed their call letters to WXIX (now used by a TV station in Cincinnati) in 1955 after the network bought them. You heard that right, WVTV used to be a CBS O&O, albeit short-lived. It moved to channel 18 in 1958 and became an independent a year later after being sold by CBS to Cream City Broadcasting following a brief period of being off the air.
In 1966, Oklahoma-based Gaylord bought WXIX & changed their call letters to WVTV, which they currently use today. Their call letters are loosely based on those of their former sister station in Tampa Bay. As an independent, WVTV was a superstation across Wisconsin & parts of the Midwest, running programs you'd usually find in an independent TV station. Cartoons, sitcoms, entertainment programs, you get the picture. Through the 80s & 90s, they also carried both Milwaukee sports teams, the Brewers (MLB) & Bucks (NBA).
In 1989, WVTV, having been airing news updates under the NewsWatch 18 branding since the late 70s, decided to launch a 9pm newscast, The Nine O'Clock Nightly News featuring anchors Liz Talbot & Duane Gay. This lasted until 1994, when WVTV & WCGV became sister stations and the former decided to ditch the news. At least, until almost a decade later when in 2003, they brought it back going by the WB 18 News under Sinclair's infamous News Central format. This format was ahead of its time, except for their notorious "must-run" stories that plenty have called right-wing propaganda, which Sinclair is known for to this day. That newscast ended in 2006 due to low ratings & budget cuts. However, the News Central format does have a de facto successor, The National Desk, which WVTV airs twice in the morning & night. The only local program on WVTV nowadays is Connect MKE, a public affairs program.
While WVTV has considered a news agreement with one of the existing news departments, unfortunately for them, all the other stations in the Milwaukee market (except WTMJ-TV) already have 9pm newscasts. WISN-TV has 9pm news on their DT2 subchannel, WDJT-TV has their 9pm news on sister station WMLW-TV, and of course, WITI is a Fox affiliate (an O&O once again) and has had 9pm news since the 90s. This means it's very unlikely WVTV will relaunch a 9pm newscast anytime soon, especially if/when NBC dumps their 9pm (10pm ET) timeslot to their affiliates, letting WTMJ-TV to air 9pm news on their main channel.
Our next news open compilation will be Bay News 9, a 24/7 local news channel in Tampa Bay, Florida. Make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel & ring the bell to be notified when that compilation video goes up.

And the price of admission - a nickel for children, a dime for adults - included more than just movies. When the old Greenfield Theater changed hands in 1930, it became the Pastime Theater. The versatile Norbert J. Karczewski Sr. was manager, ticket seller, doorman and janitor. His theater featured movies such as "The Gorilla" with Walter Pidgeon, a mystery-thriller about a killer who disguised himself as a gorilla. "Tom Sawyer" with child star Jackie Coogan, and many others. In addition to films, the Pastime headlined live entertainers. Among the musical acts were Heinie and his Grenadiers of WTMJ Radio fame, and the Badger Sod Busters, a country western group from Marquette University. Every Monday night was "Grocery Night." The theater staff gave away 25 grocery baskets to patrons with lucky numbers on their tickets. The building, which still stands at 2212 W. Greenfield Ave., is now used as the headquarters for the Sons of Norway organization. (Picture and information courtesy of Norbert J. Karczewski Sr. and the Milwaukee Public Library local history collection.)

An arrest was made in connection to the August killing of a Black transgender woman in Wisconsin.
Clayton Hubbird, 31, of Milwaukee, was charged with first-degree reckless homicide and use of a dangerous weapon in connection to the August 29 deadly shooting of 35-year-old Regina "Mya" Allen.
Hubbird made his initial appearance in Milwaukee County Court on Sunday. A cash bond was set at $250,000, and a preliminary hearing was scheduled for October 11.
According to prosecutors, Hubbird went into a gas station off 19th Street and National Avenue on August 29.
MENTAL HOSPITAL REJECTED ACCUSED KILLED OF CAPE COD MOM BURNED ON LAWN BEFORE HE DIED IN CUSTODY
Surveillance video shows Hubbird having a brief conversation with Allen before getting back into his Chevy Tahoe. Milwaukee police say Allen got into the passenger seat, and they drove off.
They later reached Allen’s apartment building near 26th Street and Wells.
A witness reported seeing the two inside a black SUV arguing.
WTMJ-TV reported that Allen was shot while walking back toward the apartment complex. The outlet, citing the criminal complaint, said a witness heard Allen call out, "I'm shot."
Allen reportedly dialed 911 and when officers arrived at the scene, they noted the victim "appeared to be in significant pain" and told police that "she had been shot by a White male, approximately 30 years of age with brown hair" and that "the shooter drove a black Tahoe that had a child seat in the back."
Allen later succumbed to her injuries at a hospital.
Police later said someone at the home where the vehicle was found said it belonged to Hubbird. A search of his bedroom uncovered ammunition and magazines, authorities said.
An arrest warrant for Hubbird was issued on Sept. 6.
Authorities have not disclosed a potential motive. Fox News Digital reached out to the Milwaukee Police Department and the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office for added comment.

Dominick Black, 20, stands accused of one count each of operating an unregistered motorcycle, and attempting to flee or elude a police officer. The latter charge is a felony punishable by up to three-and-a-half years in prison. The former charge is a misdemeanor typically subject to small fines.
According to a criminal complaint obtained by Milwaukee FOX affiliate WITI, the incident occurred on May 13, 2022. A Kenosha police officer allegedly spotted the unregistered motorcycle and was able to identify the driver as Black due to having “numerous interactions” with the defendant in the past.
The officer then tried to conduct a traffic stop — to absolutely no avail.
First, the criminal complaint says, the officer tailed the motorcycle exceeding the speed limit by relatively little — going 45 m.p.h. in a 30 m.p.h. zone. The officer says he activated his siren and flashing lights and noticed Black briefly observe what was happening in a mirror. The motorcycle did not slow down, police say, but the driver shook his head in the negative before going way beyond the speed limit.
“The driver after looking in his mirror, shook his head from side to side as if he was shaking his head ‘no’ before rapidly accelerating away from my squad [car].” the officer wrote in the court document obtained by Milwaukee NBC affiliate WTMJ. “The vehicles traveling on Sheridan Rd alongside of the MC, yielded to my emergency lights and siren.”
Then it was off to the races.
After that initial interaction, according to law enforcement, Black gunned the motorcycle to speeds as high as 80 in a 30 m.p.h. zone. Aside from the rate of speed, police say, the defendant was repeatedly and illegally weaving in and out of traffic, riding between lines, and passing vehicles unlawfully. On several occasions, Black allegedly came close to colliding with other vehicles on the road.
According to the Wisconsin State Journal, the officer wrote that Black stopped at one red light for an “extended period of time” and “repeatedly looked in his mirrors to see if I was still behind him after each turn or change of direction.”
With the pursuit by then out on the radio, another officer found Black minutes after the first one lost him. The first officer then identified the defendant and he was subsequently arrested.
According to Milwaukee ABC affiliate WISN, the defendant complained of being hot and needing air while in the back of the squad car. The arresting officer allegedly obliged the request and rolled the window down but then saw Black shaking and appearing to slip in and out of consciousness. Paramedics were then called to the scene.
The defendant was taken to a nearby hospital where blood work determined that he had a trace amount of cocaine in his system; however, medical staff said the small amount of the drug was likely not enough to cause any sort of impairment. Rather, the hospital told police, Black was likely experiencing an anxiety or panic attack.
He was previously granted $5,000 cash bail.
On Tuesday, the defendant appeared in court for a roughly two-minute-long initial appearance.
State Public Defender’s Office attorney Michelle Knapp asked for a three-week continuance on the case and said her client was looking to hire private legal representation. The court agreed.
Black’s next court date is currently slated for June 22, 2022.
