Leo glanced up the hill at the bare tree.
It used to be so beautiful. Too bad it was where the fire started.
He couldn’t stand to see their mother’s favorite tree so bare and lifeless. The bark where the lightning had hit it was still black. He tried not to think about what happened.  Leo was so tired of being mad. Mad at his misfortune. Mad at his sisters fighting. But he didn’t know what to do about it. He knew at least one thing, that ignoring his sisters wasn’t helping.
“Yeah. Let’s leave.” He answered.
Leo put little logic into his answer. He knew it hurt him to be here. Leo didn’t think about all the different possibilities of what the clans could do to them. They could be evil like their mama had told them. Or they could welcome them. Leo felt the reality of the situation hit him like a twoleg monster.
“It’s all gone… Everything I’ve ever known and loved. All ash. Mama’s dead. Our home is gone. Wherever we go it can’t get much worse than this.” Leo said. He stared down at his claws, avoiding his littermates eyes. Sadness flooded up his mind, choking his words.
“At least we have each other.”  Grace sighed. Leo knew she was trying to cheer him up but, this only boiled his sadness into anger. He knew his emotions were usually extreme but, he had never felt so sad then so angry before.
“WE DON’T EVEN HAVE THAT!!” Leo hissed.
“What?” Grace asked.
“All you do is fight! How can I say we have each other if we can’t get along?” Leo asked, “Everything is gone!  I’m ready to leave. Do you know where we’re going?”
“Well I don’t think we’re too far from the thunder path.” Dapple answered. The mood was tense but they still followed Dapple. They made their way toward the tall grass that was closer to a new scent. The scent of the thunder path. They continued to walk in silence.
Leo’s emotions dipped down into a deep guilt. He was the glue that kept the family together. How could he be tearing it apart? He could feel his stomach dip. He began to remember how much he adored his sisters, how much fun he had before Mama had gotten sick, which only made the guilt worse.
“Is it true that you saved me from the fire?” Leo asked. He looked over at Grace who perked up.
I think she’s glad I started talking to her again!
He hung on to every detail, in complete awe. His joy spiked back up. He loved his sisters and wouldn’t let anything come in between them, ever! Leo even got Dapple to join the conversation. As the sun set they settled into a bush to stay hidden and surrounded themselves with a bunch of really pungent smelling plants and flowers.
Leo was suddenly awakened in the middle of the night by loud thoughts that came rushing in like an ocean wave. The touch of a moth's wings on his ear is what woke him up. It was gentle yet it really irritated him. He chased the moth, silently, out of the bush. He began to head back when the sight of the unorganized plants around the bush felt like someone bit him. He quickly began to sort them all by how strong the smell was, making them into nice neat piles. Then after he sorted them into smells, he did the colors irritated him.
Leo had no idea where all this energy was coming from but the piles of plants kept him  up all night. Every time he resorted to it a new thing irritated him. His thoughts couldn’t stay still. They were racing to the point that it made him dizzy.
When the sun began to rise Grace came out from under the bush with a yawn. She blinked at Leo and tilted her head. Leo got no sleep and he was starting to feel tired. He stretched, but didn’t realize Grace was talking to him.
“Leo?” Grace said. This time her words actually traveled to his mind.
He shook himself, “Huh?”
“What are you doing up so early?” She asked, probably repeating herself.
“Why are you up so early?” He answered her question with a question.
“Hunting… Leo are you ok?” She said. Grace had no idea what kind of night Leo had.
“Hmm? I’m ready to sleep.” He answered.
“Sleep? Did you not sleep last night?” She asked. She got closer up to look at him then saw the piles of plants  in front of the bush. She led him back under the bush and messed up the piles so looked natural. Leo didn’t have the energy to get up and fix them.
He knew Grace knew what happened. Without him even having to tell her. This had happened before. He had gotten a burst of energy and went to their mother’s tree. He had collected all the petals that fell from the tree, but still wasn’t satisfied. He wanted more but couldn’t figure out why, so he actually climbed the tree and picked more. He knew he didn't need or want them, but he still did it.
He remembered being annoyed, almost sad at the pile. They had looked so pretty in the tree, why had he moved them? He couldn’t put them back, they could never go back. His confusion and sadness spiked. He had mewed loudly. He was confused and in pain. The sadness had overtook him like a wave again and washed away the energy. He mewed for what felt like moons. By the time it was sunrise Grace had heard him and had tried to calm him down. She brought him back to the den where Dapple was still asleep, and he had slept for what seemed like only a few heartbeats.
He wouldn’t let her leave. Leo was too afraid it would happen again and there would be no one to save him. Grace slept in till at least sun high, he didn’t have the heart to wake her. She wanted to visit the tree so bad, he and Dapple went with her even though they were hungry. Grace had noticed the pile Leo had made that night. She had stared at it.
When he looked at it fear captured him. Then his sisters began to fight again, so he ran. He ran past huge trees that would soon be reduced to ash. Grace came after him but still didn’t hunt. Why couldn’t she just hunt?! He caught a mouse and was bringing it back to the tree, it was a sort of a peace offering. But the lightning had hit, and everything had… it had… No! He wasn’t gonna think about it.
That was then but, now Leo didn’t know how to make these sudden bursts of energy stop. They were just so uncontrollable!
Grace came back with a fair amount of prey, and after eating they began to walk.
After a while Leo’s paws start to ache so he drags behind.
“Guys wait for me!” Leo called out. They didn’t slow down, they didn’t even say anything to him. They just kept walking and talking to each other. Maybe he needed to be polite.
“Excuse me, would you guys please slow down?” He asked. He began to drag behind even more. Intense anger creeped back in. He didn’t understand why he felt so angry for something so small, but he did.
They’re ignoring me! How rude! Rage filled his thoughts.
“Slow down you fox hearted flea brain!” Leo hissed. He stopped and they turned and stared at him in silence.
“Do you even care that my paws hurt and that I can’t keep up!? No apparently you don’t!” He hissed. The anger swallowed him and the unwanted energy spiked. Then quickly and suddenly the anger released him and the energy went away. He stepped back and fell to the ground, choking on his sadness.
“Woah, are you okay buddy?” Dapple asked. They approached him and helped him up. They continued to ask him how he felt but Leo couldn’t answer, he just choked on all his words.
It had been another sore, awkward walk until sunrise. They talked a little but Leo didn’t join in. He tried to enjoy the beautiful sights but his mind was full of fear and worry. What if a clan cat caught them?  Leo usually didn’t worry so much, he had just been staying up in the night way too often so he couldn’t help but worry.
Would the medicine cat be able to help? Leo wondered.
That night Leo got a full night of sleep. Or so he thought. Apparently he had slept through the first half of the day as well. He woke up with the sun high in the sky and he was on top of the backs of both his sisters. Leo let out a tiny yawn as he slowly blinked his eyes open.
“Wow you slept in longer than Grace did the other day!” Dapple exclaimed. He felt sore but had know idea what he did to cause this pain. He leaped off their backs and began to walk on his own.
They began to walk through thick bushes. Grace stopped while Dapple kept walking. Dapple eventually got why Grace was stopping but it was too late. Cats bigger and muscular than their Mama ever were jumped out of the dry bramble thicket. They pounced onto Leo, Grace and Dapple. Dapple was the first one they pinned down. No matter how hard she thrashed they held her down. Grace on the other hand was being pinned by two cats with folded ears and yet she was still able to slip away.  She quickly weaved her way over to Leo and lunged at the cat on top of him. He watched as she slashed the cat with a mud brown pelt across the nose.
“Leo, run!” She shouted.  The cats that were on her before charged toward her again. Leo dashed past them luring them over to him instead. Leo bit the tail of the gray tabby who was holding Dapple down. Then a brown curly furred cat came out of nowhere and jumped on him. Dapple began to run the other direction.
The tabby pounced back on Dapple before she could get away. Grace broke free once again. That’s when Leo realized her mouth and claws were covered in blood. Not her blood but, the clan cats’ blood.
“Wait!” yelled a cat from the distance. Leo could smell him getting closer. The bushes rustled louder and louder. Grace didn’t stop, she kept fighting. Leo never thought he’d see his sister beat what he assumed was clan cats. The cat that yelled appeared from the bushes.
“They’re just kits!” said a small orange tabby tom with a bobbed tail. The rest of the cats backed up. The orange tom was only a little bigger than Dapple.
Maybe that’s why they thought we were full grown. That warrior is small.
“What are they doing on Shadowclan territory? And how is this one so good at fighting?! She’s barely old enough to be an apprentice! The other clans must be training kits and sending them as spy's!” The gray tabby declared, and Leo thought he looked a bit crazy. Grace ran over to Leo and Dapple. She got in front of them and ejected her claws.
“IF YOU AS SO MUCH AS GRAZE YOUR TAIL ON MY LITTERMATES, YOU’RE DEAD!” Grace hissed. She shielded her siblings.  When one of the warriors moved she bared her teeth.
“Where are you from?” Asked the gray warrior with folded ears. She stepped closer. Leo and his littermates backed up.
“We’re from-” Leo began.
“LEO! We can’t trust them they just attacked us!” Grace hissed.
“Still, I don’t see how telling them where we’re from could hurt.” Leo said. He defended himself. His ideas weren’t all that bad; he just wished his sisters would take them into consideration.
“We should take them to Lavenderstripe. He could heal them while we try to get answers from them.”  Offered, the black white with  folded white ears.
“All of them? This one doesn’t have any injuries.” Asked the curly brown furred one, flicking her tail at Grace.
“Yes, we need answers!” answered the black cat with white folded ears,  “ Come on kits, let's get you to our medicine cat.” She flicked her tail and they  followed her.  The rest of the warriors followed beside and behind them, watching their every move. Leo couldn’t help but feel anxious. He was gonna meet his dad soon. His dad. The cat that their mother fell in  love with. Leo couldn’t wait to meet him but he couldn’t say his sisters looked too excited to meet their father.
Grace stopped. Leo and Dapple stopped behind her. The warriors turned and stared at them.  Why are we stopping?
“I don’t want them getting hurt. They could get stabbed by the bramble if we go through there.”  said Grace. She whipped her head and glared at the closest warrior. The gray tabby rolled his eyes at her.
“Seriously? Just follow me closely and you won’t get scratched.”  The tabby hissed.  He quickly and methodically stepped through the bramble. Grace was right behind him.
“Who’s the grumpy gray tabby?” Leo asked the orange warrior with a bobbed tail. He smirked.
“That’s Tigerstripes. He may be pretty rude and ruthless to others but, he’s not all that bad if you get to know him. You can hang around me though I’m Shorttail.” Shorttail answered. Shorttail seemed nice but, he was easily distracted by all the sounds and smells around him. Not irritated like Leo gets in the middle of the night but just distracted. Leo quickly hopped through the bramble. He really didn’t like the thought that if he weren’t careful enough he could get pricked.
After a terrifying walk through the bramble they reached a dry area filled with bramble bushes, ferns and rocks. Leo imagined Shadowclan to be more magical and full of life. The thing with the most life in it was a huge oak tree.
“Berryears take the kits to the medicine den. Get your answers.” Hissed Tigerstripes.  The rest of the warriors began to head back.
“I guess I’ll see you around camp.” Leo said to Shorttail. He nodded his head but, Leo could tell he didn’t really listen to what Leo said. He could tell Shorttail was distracted again.
Grace cautiously followed Berryears. Leo and Dapple stayed close behind their sister. Berryears led them to a den under two boulders that are surrounded by ferns. Maybe that’s the most life he’s seen in the clans. At least it was more life than the home they had left behind. A sudden urge of  sadness took over Leo. Any thoughts of his mother or his old burned down home made his mind dive into the bottom of sadness lake.
When they made it into the den there were neat piles of bundles. It was nicely sorted and pushed out of the way. Leo wondered if the medicine cat felt the same way about a mess as Leo did. Leo scanned the den for the medicine cat. There were two cats in the room.
One looked old. She was fluffy black and had yellow eyes. The other one was younger. Leo could tell that the cream tabby had more energy than her. He was talking about pain relieving herb options for her and patiently waited to hear her response before he moved on to the next one. Leo wouldn’t be surprised if he was the medicine cat. Berryears loudly cleared her throat.
“Oh, hi there! They're injured b-but, they’re just kits.” He said. His blue eyes inspected them. He got closer, nearly touching his nose to Dapple’s wounds. She flinched stumbling back. Berryears glanced over at the black cat.
“Eclipsewatcher, I hope you don’t mind coming back some other time. We need privacy.” She explained. Eclipsewatcher nodded, politely, and slowly made her way out.  Lavenderstripe pulled Dapple aside first. He began to apply cobwebs to her when Berryears pulled Leo aside. Grace followed.
“No, you go over there with your sister. I just want to talk to him.” Berryears told her.  Grace scowled in return. Then she turned to Leo. “I won’t hurt him. I promise.”
Leo gave Grace a look to say I’ll be okay. That got Grace to go over to Dapple and Lavenderstripe but she still wouldn’t take her eyes off of him.
“How old are you?” She asked. It seemed like a weird and irrelevant question to ask. Leo did like talking about himself though, even if it were to his sisters who already knew everything about him.
“I’m 5 moons old. We’ll be six moons soon! Did you know my sisters were born at the exact same time? That’s why Grace is a runt and she’s not even the weakest! She’s stronger than both me and Dapple!” He exclaimed. The truth was Leo could go on for moons. That’s when Berryears stopped him. She laughed. Not in a rude way but the kind of way you laugh at someone who is being cute.
“Okay,” She said while still partially laughing. She calmed her laughing then began to speak again. “If you guys are rogues what makes you come to the clans? Why not stay and why are you guys alone?”
The sadness he had felt before crept back into him. He sighed.
“That’s a painful story to revisit.” He admitted. “ The forest we lived in burned down.  I-It was struck by lightning. Our mama got sick…” He began to choke on his words. “ She’s been gone for awhile now. Her dying wish was that we found our father. He’s from Shadowclan.”
She tilted her head. “You poor thing! Thank you for cooperating.”  She said in a baby voice and with a smile. Why was she treating him like a kit? He’ll be six moons soon.
Leo slowly headed over to join his siblings with a disgusted look on his face. He stopped behind Grace and shyly watched Lavenderstripe patch up Dapple.
He finished on Dapple and was ready for Leo. He began on Leo’s back.
“This scratch looks like it’s already healing. Didn’t you guys just get attacked? Dapple also had wounds that were already scars.” Lavenderstripe explained. He examined closer.
“I know a little bit about healing.” Dapple admitted. Grace tensed up a bit. If Grace didn’t like her telling him that little bit of information, she would freak if she found out how much Leo told Berryears. Leo felt weird when Landerstripe tended to his wounds. He had never had any wounds bad enough to patch up with cobwebs.
It feels tingly. Just so weird.
“Who taught you what kind of plants to use?” Lavenderstripe asked.
“Our mother… Stripes.” Dapple answered. He knew Dapple shouldn’t have said that. Leo heard a little screech come from Grace. As if she was screaming on the inside. Lavenderstripe gasped and dropped the cobweb. Berryears even jumped at the name Stripes.
“Stripes! You mean as in Stripepaw! She’s dead?!” Berryears exclaimed.  Leo did say his mother had passed away and Dapple saying her name put the puzzle pieces together.
“Leo did you tell her everything?!” Grace whipped her head to meet Leo.
Berryears also turned toward Leo. “Stripepaw killed Shadowstripes! Why are they even here?”
“I told you we need to find our father!” Leo shouted. He took heavy breaths. Fear fogged his logic. He arched his back trying to gulp up more air. Would they let him and his sisters stay? There is no way their mother, their loving caring mother, would kill another cat. It had to be a mistake. Or an accident.
“Hmmm… Then who is your father?” Lavenderstripe asked. Leo looked at Dapple then at Grace. He had no idea what he was allowed to tell them anymore.
“At this point it doesn’t matter, our mother said that Braveclaw was our father.” Grace admitted. Lavenderstripe gasped again. Grace shook her head. It was probably because this was exactly what she was avoiding and she gave them the information herself. Leo didn’t know why she didn’t want to tell them anything. How were they going to help him if  they didn’t ask? How would they trust them if they didn’t give them a reason too?
He watched Lavenderstripe take a long moment to think. “Berryears, go get Braveclaw. He must know.” Lavenderstripe demanded, Berryears hesitated. “Go on.”
She quickly scurried out. He finished healing them in silence. Dapple and Leo were too afraid of saying something wrong and Grace was too upset.  Leo couldn’t tell if Lavenderstripe wanted to say anything or not. Leo was finding Lavenderstripe hard to understand. One moment he was excited and interested in a topic and the next acting like he didn’t even remember talking about it to you. Leo couldn’t figure out why.
After a long awkward silence Berryears came back. Behind her a large brown tom with long fur and amber eyes stepped through the entrance. He scanned the room, looking really intimidating.  All Leo’s excitement to meet his father suddenly turned into anxiety. Fear slowly crawled into his stomach. This cat didn’t look excited to meet his kits for the first time. He looked disgusted and angry. His stare shot negative vibes through the air.
“Who are these kits?” He hissed.
“Berryears! You didn’t tell him?!” Lavenderstripe exclaimed. She vigorously shook her head. Leo could tell she was scared, that’s why she didn’t tell him. Scared of how he’d react.
“We’re your kit!” Leo beamed. He thought if he were to act happy and excited maybe Braveclaw would see that they cared about him. Maybe then, if he knew how they felt, he would have a positive reaction.
The disgust on his face grew to a level Leo didn’t even know was possible. “My kits? What doesn’t your mouse brained mother understand about staying away from me?!” He hissed. Leo realized he assumed wrong, so very wrong. What was he even thinking? Why would someone like that be happy and excited?
“Don’t talk about our mother!” Dapple hissed back. She bared her teeth in an attempt to also look intimidating.  Grace just stayed quiet. Leo couldn’t tell how she felt about this.
“If your mother is so great why do you need me? Why do you need the Shadowclan?”  He snarled. Grace leaped in front of them as if she were shielding them from another battle.
“Our mother is gone and our home burned down!” Leo cried. He couldn’t stand this anymore. He didn’t care if he wasn’t supposed to tell him.
“So Stripes ditched you. Betrayed you just like she betrayed her clan!” Bravclaw said.
“NO! She’s dead! She would never ditch us! She got sick and died!” Leo gasped. He choked on every word as he tried to get them out as loud as possible.
Leo watched as Bravclaw’s cruel scowl slowly turned into sadness but only for a second before it  was quickly engulfed by anger.  He vigorously shook his head and ran out the den. Leo didn’t know if he should follow or stay in the medicine den. He decided he would call out to his father and if Braveclaw didn’t come back then he didn’t want to be around Leo. He didn’t come back. The sound of Leo’s voice made Braveclaw walk even faster. Leo curled up tight to his sisters. Leo was feeling really mixed emotions. Was he to feel mad that their father left them and wasn’t happy to see them? Or sad?
Lavenderstripe didn’t talk; he just, awkwardly, went back to cleaning and organizing the den. Did he not have any more questions for them? What now? Fear came back to infect Leo once more. Where would they go now? Their father clearly isn’t happy about them being here.
A big stone gray cat came into the den and interrupted his fear. He stared at them for a few long moments while he processed his thoughts.
“You must be the kits the whole clan is talking about. Berryears tells me that you’re almost six moon old. I also heard that your home burned down and you're here because Braveclaw is your father.” The cat’s voice was slow and deep. He was more intimidating than Leo’s father. Leo fearfully stared into the cat’s green eyes. He smiled at them. “I’m Pebblestar. The leader of shadowclan.” he said.
They all just silently stared at him.
“I have decided that you kits can stay here and soon you can start your apprenticeship. But only if you want to.” Pebblestar explained.
“Why would you want us? We weren’t learning to fight since the day we were born like all of you. Our own father doesn’t even like us!” Graces hissed. She puffed out her chest trying to look intimidating and still looked small to Leo. She was even smaller compared to Pebblestar, so that chest puffing  did her no good.
Pebblestar laughed, “Clan kits don’t start hunting or training till their six moons old! You’ve been living on your own for I don’t even know how long and you already fought some of my best warriors! You have more experience than all of the kits here combined. Though you do look like you could use a bit more food.”
Anger boiled in Leo. Mama lied to us again! Can we trust anything she said? Was any of it true?
He knew if he tried to speak he would choke on his words so he shoved his face into the side of Dapple’s neck and let out a small whimper.
“Come on Devoncoat is waiting outside. She'll show you where you’ll be staying until you become apprentices.” Pebblestar said with a softer voice.

Lace Up Your Skates // Jisung - Holiday AU
Tumblr media
a/n: legit everyone I know is going ice skating and I wanted to write an au about it.
Genre: Fluff
Word count: 1.8k
Warning: mention of death by car accident
Type of AU: Holiday AU
“A blind date really? That’s your big surprise plan when you texted me?” rolling your eyes at your friends. “Come on Y/N!” she said tossing articles of clothing onto her bed “We both know that it has been about seven months since you been on a date. What do you have to do so afraid of?”. You lowered your head in sadness remembering your past boyfriend. Thinking about him made a tear form and slowly roll down your face.
“Oh Y/N I totally forgot about-”. “It okay Tiff,” you said hugging tightly to your pillow “I just miss him you know? I can’t believe its been ten months since his passing”. “Come on this date could be really fun! And you never know he could the one!”. “The one for me died in a car crash ten months ago”. “Listen,” your friend Tiffany said sitting next to you “as your older sister I hate to see you this sad, life is tough, yes but we have to overcome from those challenges. Now Young-Hyun has a co-worker who we both think would a good match for you”.
“Just think about it okay Y/N, you can’t live your life think that they’re own one person for you, yes people come and go but that is life, what happened to Alec is horrible and I can’t imagine the pain your going through but do you think Alec wishes you to feel this way forever?”.
Soon your sister exited the room and you were left alone with your thoughts. You walked over to the window and stared out into the world. “Hey Alec, it’s me,” you said looking up at the sky “It’s been a while since I seen you and I really miss you. Tiffany said that I should really put myself out there again. I just not ready to forget you I just. Is it okay for me to move up?”.
You then saw a star that shined brighter than the others, was this. Was this a sign? “Well, here I go I guess, shine brightly two more times if you regret this choice, Alec”. You looked up again and the same star looked like the most. “Goodbye Alec, I love you so much always remember that”.
Walking out of your room you saw your sister with her boyfriend. “Hey Tiff, so about that blind date, can you help me pick out an outfit?”. “OMG YAY I HAVE THE CUTEST OUTFIT PLANNED FOR YOU COME ON!” your sister said quickly running to you.
Once you arrived at your closet, your sister started pulling outfits together that will fit the date. “What is the guy like anyway?” you asked looking through your closet. “Well according to Young-Hyun he is a rapper but not like hardcore rap more like lyrical oh and that he kinda looks like a squirrel. Oh what about this?” she said holding your cranberry color sweater. “Maybe if you pair this with high-waisted jeans, oh and that black fur jacket you own” she continued to grab pieces from your closet.
“Wow just wow” you sister jaw dropped once you walked out in the outfit. “It’s not too much,” you asked looking into the mirror. “You look beautiful, come on the guys are waiting for us”. “Are you going to tell me where the date is going to be? Or what I’m going to do?”. “Nope, it's all a surprise Y/N”. “Great,” you said leaning on your bed frame. Looking down at her watch your sister saw the time and her jaw dropped “crap we have to go”.
The subway ride was pretty nerve-wracking, you didn’t know what to expect from this date. About a thirty minute ride later into town, you both finally reach the inner part of the city. “Young-Hyun just texted me,” your sister said looking down at her phone “They’re are already there and brought our skating ticket already”. “Tiffany, are you sure you think I’m ready to date again?”. “Y/N, any guy would be lucky to meet you let alone date you. Don’t hold yourself back, you will be fine”.
Once you got to the rink you felt butterflies in your stomach. Tiffany ran to her boyfriends once she saw him leaving you behind. You looked behind the couple and saw a blonde hair guy standing awkwardly behind them. “Wow he really does look like a squirrel,” you said to yourself. Gaining some you walked over to him “Hey I’m Y/n you must be the friend of Young-Hyun. “Jisung right?” you extend your hand out for a handshake. “Yeah hi I'm Jisung, I have to warn you I’m not the best at ice skating,” he said shaking your hand. A small laugh left your mouth “Don’t worry I’m not either”.
The handshake turned into the two of you holding each other's hands as you went to go get your skates. Once they were one you were ready for the ice. “The first step on the ice isn’t so bad,” you said to yourself get into the rink. You step onto the ice and you perfectly skate. “Don’t worry I’m not either she said now look at her skating like a pro?” Jisung said holding onto the door to the ice. You skated back to the door reaching your hand out for Jisung to gave it. Holding onto both of your hands Jisung still looked like he was ready to fall at any minute.
“My father used to bring me to skate every first snow of the season. I had about seven years of practice.” you skated slowly making sure Jiusng had a balance. “Do you think you can manage it on your own?” you asked looking into his dark squirrel like eyes. Jisung nodded his hand and you slowly let go of his arms.
Soon he zooms across the ice. One could say that you were in shocked at the act that he just played on you. When he returned back to your location you were clapping your hands applauding his acting skills. “Wow, you got me”. “I wanted to show off but now make you feel bad so instead I tried to impress you,” he said rubbing the back of his neck. “Well, I’m kidding shocked that you can skate but it was cute seeing you struggle,,, kinda”. “Are you saying that me failing is cute?” Jisung said skating closer to you. “Gotta blast,” you said skating away.
Jisung raced towards you grabbing you and back hugging you. You felt warm in his arms a feeling that you haven’t felt in a long time. A smile grew on your face as you took in the moment. “Are you hungry?” you said looking back at him “Cause I could really go for a burger right now”. “Yeah I’m pretty hungry actually,” he said grabbing your hand as the two of you head towards the rink exit.
“Hey what can I get for you,” the worker behind the counter asked the two of you? “Um can I get a grilled chicken sandwich with no cheese and fries without salt,” you said to the worker. “Okay an what about you sir?”. “A bacon cheeseburger and a coke please,” he said pulling out his wallet and heading two 10,000 wons. “Oh you don’t have to pay for me,” you said grabbing his hand. “No it’s fine” he replied looking at you “I want too”.
A small blush came upon your face as the two of you head towards a booth looking out the rink. “So how did you find out about this date blind?” you asked him sitting down. “Young-Hyun knew how lonely I been since my ex moved to American for her job. It was a pretty messy breakup and I focus mostly on work and my music so dating wasn’t really my top priority. What about you?”.
“About ten months ago I lost my boyfriend to a really bad car accident, we been together for over two years so it was really hard to lose him. I haven’t really been dating cause I didn’t want to forget him but people come and go out our lives. Tiff thought it would be good for me to start dating again and honestly being with you is making me feel like love is possible again”.
Your food finally arrived and you took a bit of your sandwich not knowing that you had some mayo on your face afterward. “Well I’m glad that you are having a great time with me Y/N,” Jisung said grabbing his napkin “cause I’m also having a great with you as well,” he said wiping away the mayo off of your face.
The conversation continued with laughs, blushed cheeks, and Jisung something being a complete clutz. “Do you want to go back on the ice?” Jisung asked pointing to the rink. “Yeah only if you promise to act like a clutz on the ice again.’ you got up from the table and headed towards the entrance. “I can’t promise anything Y/N,” he said following you.
For the rest of the night, the two of you skated and it felt like a dream. Snow was falling from the sky, the speakers were playing nonstop holiday music, and everyone was happy. Watching Jisung fall a couple times was for sure was one of the top highlights of the whole night. You never imagine something like this would happen to you again. Sadly the night had to come to an end and you and Jisung soon had to part ways.
“Hey Y/N is it possible if I can have your number so I can ask you out officially?” he said pulling out his phone You smiled as you grabbed his phone and entered your number into his phone and then proceeded to text yourself. “There you have my number and now I have your” you handed him back his phone. “I expect a date very soon” you wink at him then went your separate ways. Before you two were too far in distance you quickly turned back ran to him and gave a light peck on his cheek.
The subway ride home you were giggling at you phone texting Jisung. “Wow, your home” Tiffany said as you enter into your apartment. “I take it that the date went while?” she sipped her tea afterward. “Thank you” you run up to her and gave her the biggest hug in the world.
Before bed you recent one last text from Jisung.
[jisung: 23:03] Hey I had a great night with you today. I hope you got home safely. So about our next date? Wanna go to a cafe tomorrow morning say around 09:45?
[you 23:05] I would love to :) Goodnight, I’ll see you tomorrow.
[jisung 23:05] Goodnight, I hope you have sweet dreams.

10 Women on How They Express Their Personal Style at Work
Of all the style-related inquiries Man Repeller receives, work outfit inspiration is by far one of the most-requested. It’s also one of the trickiest to address. Intertwining your own sense of personal style with the confines of an office dress code is common sartorial challenge, but it’s all the more challenging in the sense that no two office dress codes are exactly alike. What I wear to work at Man Repeller is very different from what my two roommates wear to their respective jobs in banking — and that’s a particularly stark example; dress codes can also differ within the same industry.
In an effort to spread a wider net and seek office attire inspiration from multiple professional corners, I turned to the Man Repeller community. I put a callout on Man Repeller’s Instagram looking for people with cool work style — or people with a colleague whose style they admired. I rounded up some of my favorite submissions below and asked them to unpack how they balance their personal aesthetic with the limitations of their respective workplaces. Their answers, like their dress codes, varied widely, but one common thread ran throughout: a conviction that the way you dress at work can tangibly impact the way you do your job. Keep scrolling to read what everyone had to say.
Syazana Hishamuddin
Syazana is a 23-year-old editorial assistant at Sassy Mama Singapore.
How would you describe your office dress code?
There’s no dress code really, because I work out of a co-working space. Everyone who comes in is really just a more presentable version of themselves in comfortable clothing.
How do you maintain your sense of personal style at work?
Comfort is key for me, which means I’m usually sticking to one layer of clothing. It’s just about all I can manage in the Signapore humidity! I love experimenting with silhouettes, color and print, so my work style is pretty laid back with maybe one dramatic element that makes it “me,” like a glittery scarf, billowing top, statement pants or a bright lipstick. I tend to dress up more on the weekends: a little more makeup, dressier shoes, maybe a maxi dress or a funky hijab style.
Can you recall any memorable stories or experiences related to getting dressed for work?
I work for the online lifestyle magazine Sassy Mama Singapore, so at the office we’re always receiving stuff in the mail like food, skincare products and clothes. One time I stepped into the office for one of our weekly meetings to find one of my colleagues unwrapping a package of gorgeous handmade clutches by Moniko, and we started talking about how beautiful they were. Next thing you know, I was tasked with modeling one of them for our Instagram stories since my outfit coincidentally matched the clutch perfectly!
Katie Whelley
Katie is a 29-year-old construction project manager in commercial real estate.
How would you describe your office dress code?
My office dress code is fairly conservative…for a number of reasons. First: I work for a multinational commercial real estate corporation. Even though I’m in the construction sector, I still have to interact with brokers and with clients who are slinging tens of millions of dollars around. Since we never know who is going to be in the office, we have a strict “business professional” dress code. Second: I live in the south, so people are more conservative and buttoned up in general.
How do you maintain your sense of personal style at work?
I’m 6 feet tall, a size 12 and have wild curly hair. I knew there was never a way in which I would “blend in,” so I decided to do the opposite. I work in a male-dominated industry, so I like to wear things that make me feel powerful (I’m a huge advocate for power dressing). Bold colors, unexpected silhouettes, menswear with a feminine edge. It’s not that I’m trying to stand out, it’s more that I’m refusing to blend in. And before you ask, yes, I wear this stuff on job sites. I always have a pair of steel-toed boots in my car, and I’d like to think my hard hat is my BEST accessory! My colleagues definitely dress more conservatively, but I think they’ve come to expect and look forward to my outfit choices.
Can you recall any memorable stories or experiences related to getting dressed for work?
I used to care obsessively about the size of the clothes I wore. No matter how ill-fitting the item, I would squeeze myself into a size 10, because at some point in my life I told myself that a size 10 was an “acceptable” size to be. I would cover up how poorly my clothes fit by only wearing dark colors, or layering with big sweaters. I was definitely hiding!
My style really changed when I decided to stop hiding my body and stop caring so much about the size I wore. I discovered how much more confident I felt when something fit me properly, and that confidence translated into being more adventurous with my style choices. There are people (especially in the south) who don’t take me seriously when they first see me. They assume I care more about my clothes than my job. My favorite thing is seeing the look on the (predominantly male) client’s face when they realize that I am the one running things, and I know exactly what I’m doing.
Sue Chan
Sue is the founder of Care of Chan, an agency representing the next era of food and living.
Vintage faux fur jacket from London — similar here, vintage top from About Galmour, Kenzo pants — another option here, acrylic purse from Les Puces flea market in Paris — another here, Zara shoes — buy them second hand here
How would you describe your office dress code?
I’m going for the CEO-next-door look, a.k.a. trying to keep it professional but also easy, effortless and natural. For example, I’m too busy getting shit done to do a full face of make-up, but I will put on some lipstick.
How do you maintain your sense of personal style at work?
We don’t have a dress code at work, so I wear the same thing to work as I do on the weekends. The only slight difference is that I wear more crop tops when I’m not at work. About a third of my closet is crop tops in all colors, shapes and materials. (I’m really excited about the Khaite “Sydney” crop top that I just pre-ordered from the Resort 19 collection. Too bad it doesn’t arrive until November.)
Can you recall any memorable stories or experiences related to getting dressed for work?
I recently brought an oldie but goodie back into rotation: a orange/pink/fuchsia paisley shorts set made by a defunct Japanese brand that I got from Opening Ceremony years ago. The first day I wore it, I was walking from the restaurant ATLA (one of our clients) back to the office and some guy stopped me to ask where I got my outfit since he wanted to get something similar for his girlfriend. It’s rare for strangers to stop me like that on the street, so clearly resurrecting this outfit was the right choice.
Brittany Berckes
Brittany is a 30-year-old lawyer in the media/entertainment sector.
How would you describe your office dress code?
Technically, it’s “business casual,” but that means a lot of things to a lot of different people and companies. I interpret it as “New York law firm professional” which, to me, means anything but jeans, T-shirts, tank tops, gym clothes, shorts, sneakers, flip flops, hats and “short” dresses/skirts/tops.
How do you maintain your sense of personal style at work?
I actually don’t mind the office dress code — it’s a joke among my friends that I have a deep and strange love for pencil skirts. But I also love color, funky accessories and fun shoes, all of which are not too common in the corporate arena. I think black, navy and neutrals tend to be the dominant color scheme in law firms, so wearing a bright yellow “work” dress or a pink dress suit are some ways I express my personal style while staying within the dress code. I also tend to wear a lot of costume jewelry (earrings and bracelets) and try to mix up my shoes (striped boots or colored pumps), too. My friends joke that I don’t really know how to dress “casually.”
Can you recall any memorable stories or experiences related to getting dressed for work?
As far as I know, my co-workers appear to support my outfit choices, even though I have worked at older, male-dominated firms where almost everyone is wearing neutral dress shirts, pants and even ties. However, some outfit choices do tend to inspire funny observations like, “Oh, wow. That’s a bright shirt,” or “Wow, those boots — lots of color.”
Banna Girmay
Banna is a 31-year-old vice president in compliance at an investment bank.
How would you describe your office dress code?
My friends say there’s no greater irony than Banna working at an investment bank. I work with mostly lawyers so the dress code is generally conservative  — plain suits, closed-toe heels, blouses, etc. My boss has so many multiples of the exact same suit, he sews in the date he had each made to keep track of what’s what! On Fridays, though, we’ve adopted a more casual dress code I’ve deemed “Freestyle Fridays,” so that’s my favorite day of the week.
How do you maintain your sense of personal style at work?
For many years, I maintained a separate drawer in my dresser for work attire that I would only open during the week. I dressed very differently on the weekends, and my work clothes never seemed to align with my personal style. Eventually I started to feel conflicted about that, because clothes are such a huge part of how confident I feel, not to mention a mechanism for how I express my creativity on a daily basis. I decided to take another approach. I started to break down the different components of my office dress code and see how far I could push each of them while still technically staying within bounds. With that mindset, my entire closet was at my fingertips all seven days of the week — a new concept for me. Could I get away with white snakeskin booties? Yes! What if I layered a turtleneck under my blouse? Done! Cheetah on cheetah on cheetah? Let’s go! Could I layer a swim top over my blouse? Too far…
I also started to play around with my hairstyles. I have thick curly hair and have tried everything from my natural curly ‘fro to faux locs, box braids and cornrows (yes, cornrows at an investment bank). The reception hasn’t always been positive — challenging decades-old standards and norms always comes with some unwanted attention. I’ve had a colleague ruffle her fingers through my ‘fro without asking, and another colleague tell me my faux locs were “unprofessional”! Despite these obstacles, I’m committed to continue bringing the full scope of my personal style to work, and Im better at my job for it.
Can you recall any memorable stories or experiences related to getting dressed for work?
One time, on a Freestyle Friday, I wore a red leather jacket with a zipper that allows you to detach the bottom half, turning it into a cropped silhouette. Pure heat. I was feeling myself, but one colleague kept giving me looks, so I eventually stopped by and asked her what she thought of my jacket! All she said was, “Beat It,” à la Michael Jackson. While MJ and I surely didn’t deserve the shade, comments like this one only fuel my sense of purpose. It’s up to all of us to push the corporate culture forward!
Naima Fatema
Naima is a 23-year-old marketing associate at a pharmaceutical company.
How would you describe your office dress code?
I think it’s “business casual,” but who really knows what that means. It’s the type of office where you’re told you can wear jeans on Fridays, but not ones with rips.
How do you maintain your sense of personal style at work?
When it comes to business casual, there are only so many pieces you can wear, and I’ve found that most shops here in Australia all seem to carry the same boring things. And everything is separated so definitively into women’s and men’s workwear. I keep my work outfits interesting by blurring this line between masculine and feminine. I stick to very classic shapes (tailored pants, blazers, turtlenecks) in interesting patterns, colors and textures. I also introduce elements of my personal style with jewelry. I have an extensive earring collection, many of which my mum brought me back from Bangladesh. I can’t afford to have two different wardrobes for work and weekends, so I’ve tried buy pieces that will work for both. My personal style and work style have actually started just to meld together as a result.
Can you recall any memorable stories or experiences related to getting dressed for work?
Just the classic work colleague comments about me looking “snazzy” or “funky.” One time I did split open the arm of a turtleneck I was wearing from wrist to shoulder, and no one said anything because they thought it was a new trend I was trying out.
Manuela Barem
Manuela is the the editor-in-chief of BuzzFeed Brazil.
How would you describe your office dress code?
Somewhere in between casual and business casual.
How do you maintain your sense of personal style at work?
I don’t have to look super polished all the time at work, because my workplace has a more relaxed vibe (mostly everyone wears jeans and sneakers). But I like to err on the side of well-dressed, because I think it’s a way of showing respect to the people I work with. At the same time, I would feel ridiculous wearing classic “boss” looks. I am proud to be a young woman who is in a leadership role and has an interest in fashion, so I try to use my looks to communicate that I’m in charge, but I’m also creative and here to have fun. I think people notice when I put thought into what I’m wearing. I love when I inspire them to do the same!
Can you recall any memorable stories or experiences related to getting dressed for work?
Work in general can be a source of pressure and stress, so whenever I wake up low on energy, I try to wear something fun and colorful with fabulous makeup. The sense of dignity I get from wearing a gorgeous look always helps my self-esteem. Every time I look in the bathroom mirror or see my reflection in a window, I feel uplifted.
Jo Bromilow
Jo is a 30-year-old digital strategist in the communications industry.
How would you describe your office dress code?
I’d describe it as “professional yet personal.” (The only thing I was expressly told I shouldn’t wear are any potentially inflammatory slogan T-shirts, which seems as good a rule as any!) At any rate, my personal interpretation of our professional dress code is best described as “the sartorial argument for a Mamma Mia/GLOW crossover.”
How do you maintain your sense of personal style at work?
Weekdays are my opportunity to dress up since I’m going into the city and mingling with people. I feel much more like myself when I get to dress how I want. Feeling like myself translates to confidence, which makes me better at my job. Ideally that’s what I think an office dress code should enable: feeling like your best self.
Most of my colleagues dress more formally (shirts or smart tops and black trousers or jeans), which is what works for them. Ultimately the key to dressing for work is figuring out what makes you feel confident. For me, it’s something bold/bright and maybe a little head-turning. I always strive to look professional and presentable (i.e. neat and tidy), but working in a more relaxed creative environment where self-expression is a large part of how I market myself to clients and media means I have more sartorial flexibility than I would in a corporate environment.
Can you recall any memorable stories or experiences related to getting dressed for work?
Personal outfit highlights include the day I came to work in a yellow suit and white boots and was compared to April from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the day I wore an oversized frilly white shirt which was subsequently nicknamed “the Victorian baby,” and the numerous occasions on which I’ve worn blue/teal lipstick. Sometimes I’m in the mood to make more of a statement and treat my work attire like a costume (I tend to goth up for Halloween — in an appropriate way, of course).
Darlene Barballianiz
Darlene is a 25-year-old removal defense paralegal at an immigration law firm.
How would you describe your office dress code?
Business casual — emphasis on the casual, since I work in San Francisco.
How do you maintain your sense of personal style at work?
The current political climate makes my job very stressful and emotional, but in general I am a happy and optimistic person. I use clothes to reflect my personality by wearing a lot of bright colors, unique patterns and gold jewelry. I like to wear colorful trousers and suits, high-waist loose pants with colorful patterned tops, block heels or boots and gold hoop earrings. I try to keep my outfits professional and comfortable but fun.
I dress differently from most of my coworkers. Most people at my firm wear neutral colors like navy, black, white and gray, whereas I show up to work in gold pants or a pink suit. Although, I have noticed some of my colleagues becoming more adventurous with their style since I started working at my company. There are definitely more big pants in the office now.
Can you recall any memorable stories or experiences related to getting dressed for work?
I had to attend the National Lawyer’s Guild Annual Testimonial dinner for work, and I decided to wear a pink suit with pink heels. I was nervous, but nothing makes me feel more confident and authentic than a bright pink suit — and confidence is vital for young professional woman of color. When I walked into the room full of lawyers, I got a lot of stares. It made me a little anxious at first, but then people starting coming up to me and complimenting my outfit. My pink suit was a conversation starter, and it actually made networking easier because it made me more memorable. I started calling myself “Legally Brown.”
Natalie McKeough
Natalie is a 28-year-old events/operations manager for a women’s professional soccer league.
How would you describe your office dress code?
Business casual (sports team-branded polos, jeans/khakis and running shoes).
How do you maintain your sense of personal style at work?
I challenge myself to interpret our company dress code in an ironic way. Instead of wearing jeans from 1998 with ill-fitting shirts, I’ll wear Balenciaga mom jeans and an oversized graphic tee, or designer track pants with a clean crisp button up and Nike platform sneakers. I call it “elevated athleisure.” I embrace a more extreme version of this aesthetic on the weekends, e.g. Manolo Blahnik jewel-encrusted sandals with biker shorts.
Can you recall any memorable stories or experiences related to getting dressed for work?
One time I was inspired by Phoebe Philo and androgynous carefree looks that make a statement, so I wore cropped navy pinstriped trousers with a gray chunky knit sweatshirt and white sneakers to work. I was very proud of this look and felt so smart and stylish. The following Monday, I showed up to my office and noticed all 16 of my colleagues were wearing navy pinstriped pants with a sweater. I remember thinking, “Wow! Everyone looks so good!” Turns out, they had collectively planned a prank to (lovingly) poke fun at me and copy my outfit. They literally went out and purchased similar items, so now they all own cool pinstriped pants. You’re welcome, colleagues.

Bottom to Top Blue Deck Makeover
The blue color scheme of this backyard deck is so soothing and sophisticated. Keeping the blue color scheme consistent from the outdoor umbrella, to the patio set, to the outdoor carpet was made possible by having enough outdoor decor options.
Kelly Rowe of Live Laugh Rowe styled her blue deck makeover with comfort and function in mind mixing and matching patio items from The Home Depot. And it looks smashing!
Blue Deck Makeover
There are many options when it comes to building a backyard deck. The choices range from composite decking, to deck tiles, to wood decking. At the time we built ours, the budget allowed for a wood deck; however, it was in desperate need of a sprucing. We created an outdoor oasis in blue that has the neighbors wanting to move-in (wink).
Deck Restoration
Before we could start with the deck decor, though, the deck itself needed some attention.
We had stained our deck a couple different times over the years, but decided to try the Behr Textured DeckOver™ this year.
WOW! This product has taken our deck from frumpy to fabulous. After a great deal of April showers, it’s holding up so well too! My husband asked why we didn’t do this sooner.
After prepping the deck with some sanding and washing, we were ready to tackle the project with paint brushes and rollers in hand.
For the hand railings we used the Behr Solid Color Weather Proofing All-in-One Wood Stain & Sealer. The paint department matched it perfectly to the DeckOver color we chose, Tugboat SC-141. It compliments the light beige color of our siding too!
Once we completed the painting and allowed for the appropriate time to dry — it was time to work on the decor!
Deck Furniture
It’s always important to know what furniture will fit within your space and will be functional. We love having a seating area to sip our coffee in the morning and enjoy a bowl of ice cream in the summer. The Oak Cliff 4-Piece Metal Outdoor Seating Set seemed to fit the bill.
Having accent tables for holding cups, trays, magazines, etc. is always a must. This wicker pouf also serves as storage. Versatility for the win, right?
The Sky Blue Square Outdoor Poufs were a must, as they provide additional seating or serve as excellent foot rests as well. My pups enjoy resting on them too.
Blue Color Scheme
While the default chili color cushions are lovely for the Oak Cliff seating set, they really didn’t fit the look I was going for. I was going for a blue deck makeover, after all.
You can imagine how excited I was to see that they offered slipcovers! Ummm, I had no idea they had slipcovers for outdoor furniture. This is BRILLIANT!
After seeing the Sky color slipcovers — I knew that the blue would create a serene space! This blue has a denim hue to it, it wasn’t your everyday navy or royal blue. I fell in love with this color and it’s one that has never made an appearance in my outdoor space.
Accessories and Lighting
Regardless of the space size, you can always add accessories! They can add pops of color, too!
I added pillows (pictured are the Hampton Bay Saddle Stripe Lumbar Throw Pillow and Sand Geo Square Outdoor Throw Pillow) and a light throw blanket for those chilly nights.
Freshly picked flowers make for a lovely centerpiece too! The orange-red still made an appearance, just not a permanent one.
The black lanterns were a wonderful addition to the space, adding some contrast and decor. At night, they serve as additional lighting, creating a lovely ambiance on my blue deck. Using the three different sizes was the perfect pairing too.
What’s an outdoor space without some string lights too? The metal lantern hanging cafe lights really seemed to complement the space.
An outdoor rug is another great accessory that can add some dimension to the space! I found this reversible trellis rug in Cape Cod blue and fell in love. Reversible means options, and I am a connoisseur of options!
Shade
As the intense heat rolls in, it’s always nice to know there is a shady spot to retreat to.
We use our patio umbrella a lot when the sun is at its peak — and being able to tilt it is an added perk. Staying in the same blue color scheme was fantastic too.
Finding the right pieces and a color scheme is essentially the key to creating an outdoor space that makes you happy. For us, our backyard deck is an extension of our home and our fur babies take full advantage of it too. I think my blue deck makeover turned out wonderfully!
I appreciate how you can take a few basic pieces and pair them with complimentary accessories to create a stylish oasis that is functional and comfortable. Now, care to join me for some sparkling iced water or tea?
