Crym and Punishment Sometimes murder is allowed as a treat. (Not for you though, peasant)
Nobody knows who Crym is so just pretend she's 2P and call this piece 2Crime 2Punishment... Incidentally a good alternate name for Yorda Hark Adopadypse
There's this funny thing about Y:DA that plagues my mind ever since I noticed it. I won't go into their context, but there are several nods and references to CrimePun in Y:DA like for starters
Konogg distracts the player with a silver watch just like Raskolnikov before he murders a woman
Glagg grows delirious and paranoid after his 'perfect plan' causes an unplanned death just like Raskolnikov after he murders a woman's sister
Themes of Social Hierarchies and Atonement
and of course
There is a quest literally called Crime & Punishment
and once you notice that you might start to see certain things about the story that will clear up to you that Yoko Taro is a crazy person wtf wtf wtf. Here? Here out of all places? Right in front of my Quirky Video Game Cross-Over?? Did you really think anybody would take this seriously enough to notice any of this???
And I'm perfectly fine with being that guy who shouts into the void that "actually Y:DA is the best, just read this 15-page essay I wrote about how this thing and this thing actually reference a book you don't care about and then three jumps of moon logic later we find ourselves discussing the social mobility of minorities and video games as an art form because I guess that's my life now" only to be told "Bro, It's not that deep" - There is just one problem:
The quest is not called "Crime & Punishment" in Japanese. It's vaguely resembling it in a "X and Y" scheme, but as far as I can tell (using google) it's only called Crime and Punishment in English and German (not in French though) which means my case for "this is defo on purpose" - the only metric of good writing besides "did i like it" - is relying on interpreting a piece of media, which as we all know is not a thing you do with video games.
This situation however also means that one of the following has to be true:
YT meant to do all these CrimePun references and expected people to pick up on them without namedropping the book and the Eng & Ger Localisations knew that (bc of translation notes or something like that) and added a direct reference bc the original quest name was similar anyways.
YT didn't mean to do that and the Eng & Ger Localisations either on their own or together realized that Y:DA had parallels to the book and decided to write CrimePun references into this quest line on their own.
This is just a massive coincidence and everybody involved referenced themes and details of a book that was then also mentioned in two seperate translations by name purely on accident.
Needless to say it's definitely the last one which makes me boo boo the fool as we all know Yoko Taro is a loser and has never used subtext in his life. But if I were ever able to ask him and/or the localisation (who kind of have to know bc they translated it) anything, I would ask them if Y:DA is referencing this book on purpose or not... (YT wouldn't answer that and laugh at me. And then he would call the cops to get me out of his house.)
Anyways, some final notes:
For the background I painted over a woodcut print of the Pulkovo Observatory bc I was lazy and backgrounds are hard. I will accept the withdrawal of my 'Mediocre Art Hobbyist' card for the sin of not being a real artist
Crym's outfit is supposed to resemble Raskolnikov's with his stupid little hat, but we all know that guy's clothes would not color match
....i am indeed actively working on a y:da video essay... i'm sorry in advance... i don't even care about anybody watching it i just want to talk about my favorite piece of video game ever (yes it has gotten that bad please call help)

Thinking bigly on a PS2 game we hyperfixated on for a few days
with the combined autism of four people in my head we have gotten every ending in Way of the Samurai 1 (but may have missed some events) over the course of a weekend and I have some thoughts. I have many thoughts, I fucking love this game and it astounds me. So peep this shit, if you don't know about it, Way of the Samurai is a funky little game set in a seemingly sleepy mountain pass during the early days of the Meiji period, in which you are making your way through-as a Samurai even. You get pulled into some bullshit, most likely on your first playthrough when you witness a kidnapping, and hopefully stop that shit because the series has a central mechanic that measures your "Samurai-ness" on a given playthrough and tallies it up at the end. Its structered in tiny Japanese game open world fashion-think Yakuza or Shenmue, in fact its very Shenmue at first glance until you realize how open the game is. It takes place over the course of two days, with time passing when you trigger certain event flags. the first day is slightly longer and more open to exploration and roleplaying:the second day is almost entirely spent on a balls out, fuck the Meiji government cop killing spree where your choices on who your siding with come to fruition with varying success:most playthroughs end when your character is slain in a fight:any death puts you into new game + mode to try it again, and the shortness of the story is most likely to prevent this from being too frustrating:unlocking new moves and picking up better swords usually means your making noticably more progress from run to run, I don't really wanna slap the roguelike term on it but. It comes to mind. And like, structurally, its really nutty to me that this game came out in 2002, it gives me big Mizzurna Falls energy with how innovative its trying to be and sticks the landing pretty solid for such an early title. (Wether that "Sticking the landing" can be said for MF is debatable at best, haven't finished that yet but thats another time) Granted I did have a brainfart and forget Shenmue came out before Way of the Samurai but like. Even then, the branching narrative and all the little events you could find, like who the fuck was doing that at the time? uhhhh mechanics are alright. It really do be a beat em up, y ou square on they triangle until you HAVE DISCOVERED A NEW MOVE:R1 + TRIANGLE FUCKO GRAB. The durability system rocks though and is more about maintaining rhythm and momentum without pushing your blade to far:the bigger your durability, the bigger your sword meter, and your durability only goes down when that meter gets full: essentially a better maintained sword in the hands of a player who knows what their doing is gonna outlast anything else. Its definitely the most agency I've felt with this kind of system in an RPG, doesn't just devolve into a fallout-ian "If I use my good rifle once it will be more broken in the future when I need it" Once I figured out what I was doing and picked a sword I liked (there are several different movesets divied up amongst the various swords with their own fighting game inputs and stuff) I could take it through several playthroughs without compromising its durability, and I like that. Apparently this system also accounts for the heat of your blade and tracks the condition of your opponents swords, too, so I've heard people talk about getting good at breaking their opponents sword. a popular strategy in the VS fighting mode that just comes included. Such an awesome addition that used to be more common and I think if a Yakuza game had a 2P VS mode it would fix me. It plays pretty alright here.
presentation-wise its very PS2:Memorable soundtrack that can get repetitive but definitely has some bangers (Righteous soul and Final Fight against Tamagawa my beloved). If you don't appreciate PS2 graphics this g ame won't change your mind but much like the branching storyline they did alot with what they have, enviroments look easily at their best during the evening/sunset and when the camera gets all fixed perspective on a bitch:Fighting Ronin on a high mountain road while the sun sets on the valley, really beautiful shit if your like me and have terminal nostalgia for a console you grew up with. An emotional clash on top of the foundry which the major factions are fighting over, Fucking up a cop and his goon for getting all sword-ban on your ass, helping the foreign Samurai compose a poem for his sweetheart-all great scenes that are framed in that beautiful palette. I don't know man its a really short game and you should play it and more people should talk about it because the series deserved much more than it got, its pretty much radio silent since the fourth installment on PS3 and that was a long, long time ago. This started as Kenzan cope (Can't find a ROM for it anywhere after I've resolved to bumblefuck my way through it with little to no Japanese comprehension) but Way of the Samurai might be my personal favorite game and a few others in my system found themselves playing and liking it as well. PS:Also also been playing the Spin-off, Samurai Western that isn't AS innovative and much more linear but also a really fucking good hack-n-slash that deserves mention because I've seen people dismiss it as being bad for focusing on other aspects of the series. game fucking kicks ass and despite the voice acting being very 2000s it has characters speaking different languages when it makes sense and More games should do that because it pisses me off when everyone speaks English lmao. game plays kinda like No More Heroes now that I think about it, and has some kinda suda51 vibes to the bosses so if you like that kinda shit check it out too.

So I may have sent this before anonymously but how would the 2p allies (or 1p) react to their s/o calling them and crying for them to come pick them up after s/o was almost robbed at gun point?
Oh geez, I’m so sorry that happened! And also sorry for the wait this ask went through. -Admin Jay
2p France: “What? Yeah, coming…”For once, Francois would put his drink down immediately and go to pick up his s/o. He would make sure they are okay, and if they wanted to file a report right then, he would drive them but would wait in the car. Francois would keep an eye out for his s/o after that but would buy them pepper spray or something to hold on to at all times so they could defend themselves.
2p Canada: “Coming.”Matt would be there in a flash, scoop his s/o up and be ready to kill whoever threatened them. He would be practically seething in rage as he looks around just daring one of the punks to show their face again. Matt would let his s/o report to the police, but in all honesty he would try to search some on his own to find them, but he wouldn’t leave his s/o alone too long.
2p America: “I’ll kill those fuckers…”Allen would be there in a half second and ready to run over whoever threatened his s/o. He would be frothing in rage and ready to hunt them down wherever they ran to if his s/o let him. Hell hath no fury like Allen enraged, and he would be livid at the thought of some thug wannabe playing tough around his s/o. His s/o would have to ask/.convince him to take them to the police rather than have him and his boys take care of it themselves.
2p England: “Oh my goodness!”Oliver would gasp and rush over there as soon as he could before hugging his s/o tightly and bringing them straight to the police. He would not let the cops rest until they caught whoever threatened his s/o. Oliver would bring them home and give them all the love and cuddles they need so they know they are safe with him.
2p China: “Say what?! I’m coming.”Zhao would be ready to kill some thugs as he rushed over to his s/o’s side. If they were still nearby he would find them and make them pay, but if not, he would take his s/o to the police. Zhao would want to go after them himself, but he would rather stay with his s/o and make sure they are okay. He would hold them against his chest all night and softly kiss their head, just so they feel safe. Though in the future, he would have them carry a small knife…and pepper spray
2p Russia: “I am on my way. Where did they go?”Viktor would be furious, but not the red hot anger, like the ice cold anger that seeps into the air around him. He would be ready to bludgeon whoever threatened his s/o and teach them what it means to be “tough”. He would swiftly pick them up and bring them to the police to have them do a report, but would try to find the almost robber himself…just to let the police find the pieces of them.

❤️💛💚💙💜❤️💛💚💙💜In the 2p! World or whatever you'd like to call it, what happened to Allen and Matt's mothers? Do you have any theories? I actually have a scenario (it sound silly sorry) let's say that the mother came back and she was alive, how would Allen/Matt react? (Just something along the lines of this If this isn't too hard). I love the account you guys have created✨It's so wonderful!
I have been hoping for this ask! Thank you so much anon!!! You made my day! -Admin Jay
2p America: Nation wise, Allen’s mom was Native America and Allen wasn’t his name, though due to colonization and the extinction of many tribes, she unfortunately passed leaving him alone with Oliver who took him in and named him Allen. Though Allen hated Oliver with a passion and was always trying to run away…to no avail.
Allen:Human AU, Allen’s mom was a native but his dad was a deadbeat outsider. His mother left the reservation to be start a life with him, though once they made it to New York City, life got hard. His dad vanished leaving him and his mom alone, though when Allen was still young, she got sick during a harsh New York winter and one day when he was coming home from school, cops took him away since there was no home for him to go back too. Since he had no other family, and no one could track down his father, they dropped off Allen at an orphanage in the Bronx, which led to his distrust of any authority and his delinquent attitude. Though once Allen got older, Oliver came to the orphanage looking for a baby, and they passed off Allen on to him so they would get the trouble child out of their hair.
2p Canada: Nation wise, Matt’s mom was also Native America since there were no borders back then. Though once she passed, Matt was left to fend for himself until Francois picked him up. That being said, Matt hardly knew what it was like to have a parent since Francois didn’t care about having a colony and was left to fend for himself most of the time anyways. His only friend other than Allen (who he hardly considers a friend, more of a headache…and his brother) was Kuma, despite the fact that Kuma has attacked him before and left him on the snow to bleed with deep gashes in his chest. To this day, Matt will sometimes still wrap the wounds, but now he can fend off Kuma anytime the polar bear tests him.
Matt:Human AU, Matt’s dad is Francois. Though he hates to admit it. Matt grew up in a household full of physical and emotional neglect that only worsened when his mother passed when he was around 7; not to mention the only present that he has ever received from Francois was his red flannel shirt, and that was only because it was cold and raining out at Matt’s moms funeral. Matt’s back and arms are covered in old scars from broken bottles and cigarette burns.
So for the mom coming back scenario, I’l do the Human AU, if you want the nation one, feel free to ask! Again, thank you for asking this! I love it! -Admin Jay
Allen: *looks up and blinks before his voice waivers and hitches as he tries to push the drugs aside and rush to her* “Momma!”Allen wasn’t told the official story of how the frozen winter air took his mom until he was much older. Though if he looked up and saw his mom standing there, he would think he was on some fucked up kind of high, but high or not, he wouldn’t want his mom to see that he had slipped into drugs. He wanted to be a good son for her…but without her here it was so hard…Allen would feel the tears streaming down his face as he rushed to hug his mom. It didn’t matter if this was a fucked up high or some kind of dream, all he would want would be to see her again…and he would beg…pray for the first time in years, that this moment was real. Allen would cling to his mom and cry before apologizing over and over for how fucked up he let his life get.
Matt: *blinks, rubs his eyes, bites his lip as he takes a quiet breath* “M-mom?…why?…”Matt would just blink and look at his mom before biting his lip…she was here? She couldn’t be…he was there…from the day she got sick to the funeral…she couldn’t be here…he had to be dreaming…but in that moment he didn’t care. Matt would rush to his mom and beg that he could reach her, and that when he got there she was still there and real. Years of building walls and shoving any emotion under a rug would vanish as he would break down crying and begging for that moment to be real and never end. He didn’t want to be alone again…not after seeing her again.
