Crow’s Feet

Prelude

Ever looked at something that’s so fundamentally flawed, so bad in design, form and function, it’s actually intriguing. Like a botched piece of taxidermy or a first attempt at a short novel. A piece of work that was probably not half-assed but whole-heartedly assed with good intention and it would be insulting to the creator to jokingly ask did you write this story as if you’re the old piece of gum stuck underneath a Grade 8 English Lit student desk? With no light, sense of tense, or spellcheker? The stereotypes and bad similes cause eye rolls so

far back into one’s head it’s like… well it’s hard to think of a comparison here, so count yourself lucky. Not to mention the ADHD diversions, talking about mounting dead animals in one sentence quickly sidestepping to self-awareness of this piece of literature. I digress. When last did you see a questionable piece of art that you found beautiful? So bad, it’s great. So useless and time-wasting, it’s what you’ll think about ironically one day on your deathbed. Because heck… made you look.

The Incision

Mondays. The start of a new week. New opportunities for a new you. A fresh squeeze of hope that things will get better served with a side of “I can change” attitude. And no matter how many Mondays we have, (4 187 to be precise, if you, like the average human being will live to 79), you will wake up to the same old boring Monday, every week, the same way.

Each one with a long dreary stretch and sigh, heavy eyes, telling yourself that you will make the most out of this week. But you won’t. Because laziness is time consuming and you don’t actually have anything else to do, really.

However, on this particular Monday, which was Fick McOwen’s 2226’s Monday, things were different.

Fick woke up with the dreadful sensation of drowning. Sinking deep in a casket of darkness. As he gulped in a breath of thick air, it tasted of rotten cabbage coating the back of his throat. Blind and bewildered, sharp metal sounds scratched close above his head. The sound stung his eardrums and made him cock up his forehead banging it hard against a flat surface.

‘Jeeezus fuck’, he hissed.

With no sense of time and space, his ears were ringing overcharged electric chimes in his head which felt cracked and ready to explode like a reactor in Chernobyl. He took a few minutes to try and calm himself. No good ever came from a panic attack in closed confines with a possible concussion. He finally raised his hands to his chest and did what most drunks do the minute they wake up, pat themselves down and check their underwear.

One week earlier.

If she was just a bit nicer, Jeffrey thought, she may have already had a proper and dignified burial for her husband. Stomping up and down a room that looked like it was decorated for a five-star hotel in Vienna, the newly-widow’s bony figure moved fast from left to right like a rabid old fox prowling a fence. For Jeffrey, her unwanted but needed bodyguard/help/punching bag, she was Hitler’s sphincter. She sparked fear in him and tightened his nerves with her demanding presence. Like a screwdriver twisting and turning into soft wood. A reaction he despised about himself. It ruined many good days. Sunny days and days like today.

Watching her from the corner of the large room, she attempted phone call after phone call, shouting at poor bastards who made the simple mistake of answering their phones that day.

Wanting to disappear he closed his eyes and listened to every passive-aggressive step she took in the room. He liked to tell when she walked on the tiles or the bear rug; it was a fast tac tac tac womp womp womp womp tac tac womp womp…then nothing. He opened his eyes and with a fright found her standing right in front of him, steaming red with anger.

Her greying blonde hair was fastened in a tight pincushion on top of her head. This pulled back her frail white skin that held everything in place. Face to face, he couldn’t help but stare at the permanent makeup she had done on the lower lids of her eyes and on top of her brows. It was starting to fade and as a result, it looked like she put eyeliner on days ago and never washed it off.

Her stare was cold and deadly like an overworked mortician’s. It complemented her daily outfits of thin grey pencil skirts and matching suit jackets. She had her name embroidered on the inside of the neckline since all of her clothing was specially washed and pressed at a local laundromat. One that she owned of course.

Margaret.

That’s what her husband used to call her. Or Margarine, Margie, or Macaroon. She would always remind whoever was listening that she was actually named after Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowden. If you had to look her up, you would see the uncanny similarities between the two women. So much so, that Jeffrey often wondered if they weren’t related. Considering how much of a royal bitch she was.

Nevertheless, he had to call her Mrs. Ergo. And he preferred the kind request from John Ergo, her late husband, since he didn’t think she would have liked the names he had listed for her in his head anyway.

She snapped back up and walked across the room towards the large oak desk that faced the gigantic windows that looked out onto their garden. Their Ergo-Eden. With a deep sigh, he sat up straight and smoothed back his black hair that was styled according to an old Italian mobster he saw in a film when he was 15.

“It’s all in the confidence of smoothing the wax over your hands first and then through your hair.” That’s what the old man said to his fellow pasta slurping, red-wine drinking, two hits a week gang that sat around a checkered table talking about the importance of looking respectable, no matter what the job. And this was what he told himself in the bathroom mirror every morning, (impersonating a very bad Italian accent of course) while he prepared for his day.

Apart from the respectable hairdo, Jeffrey was built like a small bull with a refined jawline. At first glance one would imagine he spends his days lumberjacking in the forest; but instead of plaid shirts, he was forced to wear black on black as per ‘management’s’ request.

He refocused his attention on her and as foul as she was acting that day, somewhere deep inside him, he felt sorry for her and her loss. His face twitched as he clenched his jaw trying to shape compassion on his face, but feared he looked more like a constipated clown trying to keep his cool. He was given cards once with all the different faces and expressions on it. Ironically, the illustrations looked like they were drawn by an autistic robot with no emotion nor artistic talent (it was), but it helped him deal with different people. Lines that came down the forehead with no teeth, meant anger or disappointment. Teeth showing meant they were happy – or about to bite you.

Margaret often made faces Jeffrey couldn’t place on his cards and her teeth always had some lipstick stains on it, which quite frankly, just distracted him altogether.

He watched her go down a list of names and numbers, furiously scratching them out when the call didn’t go as planned. Eyeing the last name and number on the list, she picked up the phone and started dialing.

Fick carefully pulled the skin up the neck and then over the top of the head, trying his very best to keep his hand steady. He wore magnifying goggles that pushed his choppy brown hair up toward the ceiling and enlarged his olive-grey eyes. It looked like the head of a praying mantis was stuck on a lanky man's body who dressed as if he found a discarded box of 80s band shirts and never bothered to wear anything else again.

'There.' He said as he lifted his hands and inspected the bird-like shape that was coming together in front of him.

In the back of the garage-turned-workshop, a small radio was trying to hold itself together while Henry Rollins tore away at its speakers. The music filled the room and gave Fick the ability to concentrate. Nothing else was audible. Not a phone or a thought could break his focus.

And it paid off; the crow started to take a lively shape, fast. All it needed were the eyes and some beak touch-ups and this bad boy was ready for some teenager's window sill.

Fick lived in Long Fountain, a small town where the kids were either into wrestling, the backyard kind, or satanism – also the backyard kind. This meant there were a lot of goth-like metalheads who gave themselves names like Agares and Forneus and hung outside the grocery store to smoke cheap cigarettes they bummed off the shop clerk. They would wear black makeup and dangle fake blood vial necklaces around their necks. Some would even proudly claim that they spray-painted hale satin on the backside of the church announcement board. To top off their rebel-without-a-cause-and-lack-of-basic-grammar-look, these kids would own a taxidermied crow on their windowsills, just for that extra edge.

“It’s a phase” most parents would say, but Fick couldn’t care less. He got fifty bucks out of it, liked the work, and asked no questions.

As a self-employed middle-aged Taxidermist, he could work from home and at his own pace. Something he considered to be more valuable than a performance bonus cheque at the end of a year after slaving away in a badly lit office desk from nine to five, five to seven days a week.

He didn’t necessarily consider himself a hermit, but he did prefer his own company with the exception of a few selected people – very selected and very few. This was a choice he made unapologetically clear to others who wanted to befriend him for no real reason. When presented with this frankness, they would awkwardly laugh it off and insist he’s just a fun and sarcastic guy. He despised those people the most.

Furthermore, Long Fountain was a small enough town for the nosy types to know everyone and their business, while still quiet and sparse enough for others to embrace the privacy of the town’s border. If you had to take a drone shot from high above, the edge of the town looked like it disappeared into the desert like an ocean of drought that spilled into a suburb. Fick could never figure out why they called it Long Fountain though, as there wasn’t even a lake or river anywhere near them. But he liked it there and he appreciated the colourful desert sunsets that could be found if you were at the right place at the right time.

The only other peculiar thing about the town was that there was an abnormally large crow population, which he didn’t mind because it meant more product for him. That, and an abnormal amount of old age homes.

He gripped the tweezer handle between his teeth while he carefully glued the last soft tiny black feathers to the rim of the beak; he tended to hold his breath during these final touches. While the song came to a screeching halt, the ringing of his cell phone surfaced through all the noise and concentration.

‘Fuck!’ He spat out the metal twangs, pulled off the goggles and flipped his phone over to reveal four missed calls from an unknown number in town. He was about to throw the phone over his shoulder onto a once purple–now grey–couch, when the screen lit up again with the same number flashing.

‘Hello’ he answered casually trying to simmer down.

‘Hello, is this Fick McOwen?’ A sweet lady’s voice kindly asked on the other side.

‘Yes, how can I help?’

‘I’m looking for someone who can help me with a,’ she paused for a second, ‘stuffing job?’

‘Well ma’am, I do all kinds of taxidermy. We don’t call it stuffing though, rather mounting,’ he smirked. ‘Anything from crows, bucks, ducks, even your pet poodle.’ He stared at the one-eyed crow that was perched up in front of him.

‘What is your rate?’ She calmly inquired.

‘It depends on the job. Small birds and animals start at thirty bucks, and then it can go up to a couple of thousand for a full deer, buck or elk.’

She went quiet on the line. He could tell she was busy writing something down, possibly a calculation. He hated long silences, it gave him indigestion.

‘What would you like to have mounted?’ He nudged, just to check that she was still there. She remained quiet.

‘Hellooo?’

‘Ten thousand.’

‘Excuse me?’ He quickly asked to confirm that he probably misheard.

‘Ten. Thousand.’ She repeated sternly.

‘Ma’am. What do you want to have done?’ His stomach started to tie knots of doubt, anticipating a job he may not be able to do.

‘I prefer a private meeting to discuss this further.’ Her tone suddenly changed from a sweet old lady to an office crank complaining it’s cold. He hesitated for a second. Feeling his gut whisper all tales of caution to avoid this type of interaction. “If it’s too good to be true…” he would always remind himself.

But…then again...

The ten thousand dollars started to swim through his mind like a beautiful woman in a red bikini, blowing kisses from a crystal blue pool. Caught in the moment, he impulsively replied, ‘Okay.’ She quickly confirmed that her people will be in contact with his people and disconnected before he could even take a breath to say he doesn’t have “people”.

Confused about the call and left with nothing to follow up with, he decided to write it off as another crazy old lady from one of the care homes who got hold of the nurse’s office phone. Eyeing the cotton-eye-crow, he proceeded to hit play on his stereo, threw his mobile on the couch and stuck the tweezers back in his mouth to finish the job.

UX vs. UI Design – Everything You Need to Know

Oftentimes, people use the terms UX and UI interchangeably, but in reality, these two have very different meanings.

At one point in time or another, we all must have overheard discussions regarding the excellent UX of a product and the lousy UI of a site. But what exactly are these two terms? What are their actual meanings? Is it some secret language that we’ll never know? Or do people just use these terms to sound cool?

Well, perhaps yes to the last question but a big NO to the rest of them. In this blog, we will discuss the difference between UX and UI. Keep reading this blog till the end to know everything about it.

UNDERSTANDING UX VS. UI

Before we start talking about anything, we must make sure that we are clear on the basics. So what are UX and UI? Let’s see.

UX design stands for “User Experience Design,” and UI designs stands for “User Interface Design.”

Both of them are crucial components of a product, and they work closely together. However, notwithstanding their connection, they play very different roles and deal with entirely different facets of the product development process and the design discipline.

Prior to diving into the difference between the two elements, first, let’s go through what the terms UX and UI individually mean.

WHAT IS USER EXPERIENCE (UX) DESIGN?

UX Design can be understood as a ‘human-first’ process that teams use to design digital and physical products.

Donald Norman, a cognitive scientist who coined the term “User Experience,” defines it as a term that circumscribes each and every facet of the interaction between the end-user and the brand and its products and services.

But you might have noticed that unlike what we discussed earlier, this definition does not tell much about what a UX designer does. But then again, similar to any other profession in this world, this too cannot be explained in just a line or two.

Nevertheless, this definition does imply that no matter what the medium, User Experience Design circumscribes all interactions that take place between an active or potential consumer and a business. Being a scientific method, this can be applied to anything ranging from street lamps to vehicles. But, despite being a scientific process, ever since its rise, it has been almost entirely used within the digital fields. One of the primary reasons behind this is the fact that the tech industry began exploding around the period of this term’s inception. UX Design has a fascinating history, and in case you want to know all about its origin and rise, you can always look it up on Google.

Virtually, UX applies to everything that can be experienced – whether it is a website or a coffee/tea maker or even a visit to the mall. As stated earlier, user experience is nothing but all the user interactions with a company, its product, or service. Therefore, UX design refers to all the various components that shape this user experience. A UX designer considers the feelings that the experience evokes in the user and how easily users can accomplish their desired tasks. For instance, in the case of an eCommerce website, the designer may think how easy it is for the users to complete the checkout process while shopping online? Or how easily customers can grasp that vegetable peeler? Or does our company’s mobile banking app allow the users to manage their money well? The end goal of UX design is to build easy, streamlined, coherent, and overall delightful experiences for the users.

Now we will talk about what precisely a UX designer does later in this blog. For now, let’s take a quick peek into everything you should know about UX design in short.

UX design is the way to develop and enhance the quality of all aspects of user interactions with a brand and its products or services.

Even though, in theory, UX design is a non-digital (cognitive science) process, it has been used and defined for the most part by digital fields.

One of the most widespread misconceptions about UX design is that it is about “visuals.” User experience design focuses on the overall feel of the experience.

WHAT IS A USER INTERFACE (UI) DESIGN?

Regardless of the fact that user interface design is an older and more practiced discipline, answering the question “What is UI design” seems like a bit of a challenge due to the wide range of misconceptions surrounding this field.

While the UX design is a cluster of tasks focusing on optimizing a product to make it more efficient and enjoyable for the users, UI design complements or adds the finishing touch to the product. User Interface design focuses on the look and feel as well as demonstration and interactivity of a product.

However, just like in the case of UX, here, too, the company hiring UI designers often and most commonly confuse it with other professions. This misinterpretation is to the extent that entirely different job posts will usually refer to the profession.

Take a look at the job openings for UI designers and go through their descriptions. You will most likely observe interpretations of the profession similar to graphic designing, and sometimes even front end development and branding design.

Meanwhile, if you go through the ‘expert’ definitions of UI design, you’ll predominantly spot descriptions that are partially akin to UX design.

Perhaps you are now wondering which one of them is actually right? – Sadly, none.

First things first, let’s clear this up for good. To begin with, unlike user experience design, UI design is purely a digital practice. A User Interface is a POI (point of interaction) between a user and a digital product or device. For example, your smartphone’s touchscreen, the trackpad you tap on to choose the type of beverage you want from the hot drinks vending machine, or the fingerprint sensor on your devices, all are points of interaction. In regards to websites and applications, user interface design focuses on the look and feel, and interactivity of the product. This process is all about ensuring that the UI of the given product is as intuitive as possible. This means cautiously taking all visual, interactive components into account that the users may come across. A UI designer will consider everything – from imagery, spacing, icons, and buttons to responsive design, color schemes, and typography.

Similar to UX design, UI design is a many-sided and challenging task. It accounts for the transformation of a product’s research, development, layout, and content into an appealing, navigating, and responsive experience for the users.

We will be discussing the whole UI design process and particular tasks that UI designers can expect later in this blog. For now, before proceeding forward, let’s take a quick recap on UI design.

UI design is strictly a digital process that thinks about each and every visual, interactive component of a product interface, such as color scheme, imagery, typography, icons, buttons, responsive design, and spacing.

The ultimate purpose of user interface design is to navigate the users visually through the interface of a product. UI design is all about developing an intuitive experience that does not make the users think a lot.

User interface design transfers the strengths and visual assets of a company to the interface of its products, ensuring that the design is harmonious, relevant, and visually appealing.

Having said that, with these crystal-clear definitions of both user experience and user interface, we are clear on the basics. This brings us to the difference between UX and UI.

Let’s dive in!

KEY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN USER EXPERIENCE (UX) AND USER INTERFACE (UI)

We will try and explain the various parts of a digital product using a metaphor:

Think of a product as the human body – here, the bones of the body portray the code which gives structure to the product. Likewise, the organs depict the user experience design – assessing and optimizing against input to support functions of life. Finally, the user interface design portrays body cosmetics: its demonstration, senses, and responses.

Still, confused? No need to stress out because you are not the only one.

UX and UI are the two most mistaken and abused terms in the digital field. User interface without user experience is like an artist throwing paint onto a canvas without thinking or having any idea. Similarly, user experience without a user interface is like a sculpture’s frame without any papier-mache on it. In order to offer an excellent product experience, UX and UI need to work together closely. They are both equally vital to the success of a product.

In case you have got some space for another metaphor, we would like to clarify the relationship between the UX and UI better:

Suppose you are on a vacation trip and you went to a restaurant to try out the local cuisine. As you step inside, you notice the lavish ambiance – the chairs, tables, glasses, plates, etc. Everything you are seeing is UI. Meanwhile, UX includes everything from delicious food, lighting, service, background music, parking lights, etc. Now, if you exit the restaurant in a happy mood, you experienced a great UX.

We hope you realize the difference between these two now.

Moving forward, keep in mind that UI and UX go hand in hand – you cannot just have “one” of them. Another crucial point to understand is that one does not need to have UX design skills to become a UI designer, and vice versa. UI and UX make up distinct roles with distinct processes and tasks.

In a nutshell, the primary difference that you should remember is that user experience design is all about the overall feel of the experience. While user interface design is all about how the interface of a product looks and functions.

A UX designer thinks about the whole journey of the user to resolve a specific issue: what measures do they take? What tasks do they have to accomplish? How simple and easy is the overall experience? A vast part of their work includes focusing on the types of issues as well as pain points that users encounter and how a particular product may fix them. UX designers carry out comprehensive user research to identify their target users and their needs regarding a specific product. Next, they will map out the entire user journey across the given product, taking into account things, such as IA (information architecture), i.e., the way content is organized and labeled across the product and the types of features a user might require. UI designers significantly influence whether a product is accessible and all-encompassing or not. They will ask questions such as how various color combinations can be employed to create contrast and improve readability? Or, what color combinations contribute to color blindness?

Expectantly, you must have now begun grasping the difference between UX and UI design and how they both are indeed two different practices. To sum it up:

User experience design focuses on finding out and resolving the problems users face, while user interface design focuses on developing intuitive, appealing, and interactive product interfaces.

Typically, in the product development process, UX design comes first and is followed by UI design. First, the UX designer outlines the skeleton of the user journey; then, the UI designer completes it with visual, interactive elements.

While user experience can be applied to any type of product, service, or experience, a user interface is firmly limited to digital products and experiences only.

HOW DO UX AND UI DESIGN GO HAND IN HAND?

By now, we have looked at UX and UI as individual terms as well as discussed their differences. Let’s move on to how these two work together. You may be wondering if one of them carries more weight than the other. But the truth is that both of them are equally essential.

A product that looks very pleasing but is too hard to use is an excellent example of good UI but bad UX. In contrast, a product that is very easy to use but looks awful is a perfect example of good UX but lousy UI.

As you must have realized, UX and UI strictly work together. Having one of them work without the other would still make it feel like something is missing. Even though there are hundreds of thousands of examples of excellent products that have only one of them without the other, just envisage how incredibly successful they could have been if they had kept a firm grip on both the practices.

User interface design is like the frosting on the user experience cake. Suppose you think of a fascinating idea for an application that is evidently missing from the market, and its presence could truly change the lives of many. Somewhat capitalizing on the success of 2016’s Suicide Squad, Margot Robbie returns as Harley Quinn in an ensemble tale that kind of functions as a solo adventure all at the same time. Questionable marketing, costume choices, and an unnecessarily long title that should have been simplified to “Harley Quinn and the Birds of Prey” in the first place were likely the biggest factors contributing to financial shortcomings, although there’s nothing we can do about any of those at this point.

Basically, the story follows Harley Quinn, Huntress, Black Canary and Renee Montoya as they call come together while the villainous Black Mask and Victor Zsasz hunt the human MacGuffin that is Cassandra Cain. I won’t spoil why they’re pursuing said child in case you haven’t seen the picture for yourself, but that’s the gist of it.

Positives

The greatest positive to mention is that of the gal whose name is included in the title itself: Harley Quinn. Like I said, this is damn near a Harley solo film, although I can’t complain too much because Margot Robbie simply knocks it out of the park. It’s as if Suicide Squad were the appetizer and Birds of Prey is the main course. Her performance is spot-on, and I can tell she put a lot of effort and research into every onscreen decision she made while inhabiting the character’s skin. My guess is that she’d just begun reading the comics while filming Suicide Squad, and then read a lot more in the time since. I know for a fact that she’s become a fan of the source material, and it really shows.

In fact, I must say that the rest of the main cast did commendable jobs with the roles they landed – even if some of those portrayals were questionable. Well, any missteps when it came to characterization weren’t their fault, as actors just play with the scripts they’re given. We’ll pick up on that point when we get to the “negatives” part of this review, alright?

Actually, it could be argued that some gripes can be tolerated when the end product turns out so well. The narrative itself unfolds in nonlinear fashion, yet it comes across as quite smooth. It’s a far cry from the editing nightmare that was Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice‘s theatrical cut, that’s for sure.

If anyone deserves a round of high fives, it’s 87eleven, the stunt team who choreographed the stellar action sequences. There’s a very good reason why the fight scenes are on par with John Wick films – and that’s because the same talented folks just mentioned worked on those. Here’s hoping they’re brought aboard for more DC projects in the future, particularly anything having to do with Batman.

K.K. Barrett and his production design crew also warrant a tip of the hat. I’m aware that they wanted their Gotham City to look different and more realistic, but it’s my belief they achieved something closer to the comics than anything lensed by Christopher Nolan and Zack Snyder. Not meaning to knock what those guys did, but their Gothams simply looked like everyday major cities. Gotham City is a character unto itself, and that’s something I haven’t seen portrayed to the fullest extent outside of the Tim Burton-Joel Schumacher era and the Gotham TV series. But here, we’re transported to Black Mask’s nightclub, an eerie amusement park and otherworldly pier that look like they were plucked from Batman: The Animated Series, with daytime romps through the city forcing me to recall something like the Burnside borough from the comics.

And when it comes to supplemental content, WB sure didn’t skimp on that for the Blu-ray release. I recommend checking out “Birds Eye View Mode” for your second viewing of the feature presentation, as it is essentially a video commentary, behind-the-scenes tour, and pop-up video-style factoid dropper all rolled into one. Beyond that, there are featurettes that delve into production design, stunts, costuming and much more.

Negatives

Okay, here’s where I have to get dead serious.

My first airing of grievances has to be directed at costuming. That particular department may have wanted to avoid skimpy spandex outfits and “onesies” as they put it, but not many characters in this movie are recognizable to readers of comics. Although most people flocking to theaters don’t actually read the books, the core audience will kickoff the snowball effect of advance poor word of mouth without fail, and that definitely happened well before opening weekend this past February.

Now, I’m not saying Mary Elizabeth Winstead had to run around in a singlet as if she were going for a swim, but they could’ve figured out some sort of tactical gear akin to the blueprint laid by comic book artists. If other movies in the genre can do it, why couldn’t this one? And when she finally does don the black and purple complemented by a white cross, it’s in a tracksuit-type whatever-it-is that looks like it was ordered online and arrived several sizes too big. You see, this is what grinds the gears of diehard fans. If their familiar getup is supposedly so impractical and unfavorable to women, then Harley Quinn and Black Canary wouldn’t be cosplayed ad infinitum worldwide, would they?

Now, I’m not going to do likewise for every other character – save for Harley, who couldn’t even wear her familiar red and black color scheme – but there’s a reason why I singled out Huntress: I’d been waiting years for her to come to the silver screen. Not only that, but both the Birds of Prey and Arrow TV series had already struck out when it came to her costume, so that’s why I had high hopes for this. And to be clear, I have no criticisms of Ms. Winstead herself; the casting department found the right actress. It’s just that they missed the mark with her gear.

As for poor characterization mentioned earlier, I can’t fathom how Black Mask and Cassandra Cain got so f—ed up. The former would be more aptly described as “Black Mascara” and the latter is not the disabled hero who once took up cape and cowl as Batgirl in the comics. I’d go as far to say they could’ve called her “Jimmy Olsen” and it wouldn’t have made a difference. Really, why mess up them both when every other major character in this production was pretty much nailed from a writing standpoint? But that’s Hollywood, baby, and they know better than you or I.

Verdict

In the case of Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), the pros far outweigh the cons. Trust me when I say this film is a must-see for fans of Harley Quinn and DC Comics in general, so do yourself a favor and pick it up on whatever home video format you prefer. It’s insane, R-rated fun on the same level as Deadpool, so fingers remain crossed that this finds the larger audience it deserves.

Taming Blend Modes: `difference` and `exclusion`

Up until 2020, blend modes were a feature I hadn’t used much because I rarely ever had any idea what result they could produce without giving them a try first. And taking the “try it and see what happens” approach seemed to always leave me horrified by the visual vomit I had managed to create on the screen.

The problem stemmed from not really knowing how they work in the back. Pretty much every article I’ve seen on the topic is based on examples, comparisons with Photoshop or verbose artistic descriptions. I find examples great, but when you have no clue how things work in the back, adapting a nice-looking demo into something that would implement a different idea you have in your head becomes a really time-consuming, frustrating and ultimately futile adventure. Then Photoshop comparisons are pretty much useless for someone coming from a technical background. And verbose artistic descriptions feel like penguin language to me.

So I had a lightbulb moment when I came across the spec and found it also includes mathematical formulas according to which blend modes work. This meant I could finally understand how this stuff works in the back and where it can be really useful. And now that I know better, I’ll be sharing this knowledge in a series of articles.

Today, we’ll focus on how blending generally works, then take a closer look at two somewhat similar blend modes — difference and exclusion — and, finally, get to the meat of this article where we’ll dissect some cool use cases like the ones below.

A few examples of what we can achieve with these two blend modes.

Let’s discuss the “how” of blend modes

Blending means combining two layers (that are stacked one on top of the other) and getting a single layer. These two layers could be two siblings, in which case the CSS property we use is mix-blend-mode. They could also be two background layers, in which case the CSS property we use is background-blend-mode. Note that when I talk about blending “siblings,” this includes blending an element with the pseudo-elements or with the text content or the background of its parent. And when it comes to background layers, it’s not just the background-image layers I’m talking about — the background-color is a layer as well.

When blending two layers, the layer on top is called the source, while the layer underneath is called the destination. This is something I just take as it is because these names don’t make much sense, at least to me. I’d expect the destination to be an output, but instead they’re both inputs and the resulting layer is the output.

Blending terminology

How exactly we combine the two layers depends on the particular blend mode used, but it’s always per pixel. For example, the illustration below uses the multiply blend mode to combine the two layers, represented as grids of pixels.

Alright, but what happens if we have more than two layers? Well, in this case, the blending process happens in stages, starting from the bottom.

In a first stage, the second layer from the bottom is our source, and the first layer from the bottom is our destination. These two layers blend together and the result becomes the destination for the second stage, where the third layer from the bottom is the source. Blending the third layer with the result of blending the first two gives us the destination for the third stage, where the fourth layer from the bottom is the source.

Blending multiple layers

Of course, we can use a different blend mode at each stage. For example, we can use difference to blend the first two layers from the bottom, then use multiply to blend the result with the third layer from the bottom. But this is something we’ll go a bit more into in future articles.

The result produced by the two blend modes we discuss here doesn’t depend on which of the two layers is on top. Note that this is not the case for all possible blend modes, but it is the case for the ones we’re looking at in this article.

They are also separable blend modes, meaning the blending operation is performed on each channel separately. Again, this is not the case for all possible blend modes, but it is the case for difference and exclusion.

More exactly, the resulting red channel only depends on the red channel of the source and the red channel of the destination; the resulting green channel only depends on the green channel of the source and the green channel of the destination; and finally, the resulting blue channel only depends on the blue channel of the source and the blue channel of the destination.

For a generic channel, without specifying whether it’s red, green or blue, we have that it’s a function of the two corresponding channels in the source (top) layer and in the destination (bottom) layer:

Something to keep in mind is that RGB values can be represented either in the [0, 255] interval, or as percentages in the [0%, 100%] interval, and what we actually use in our formulas is the percentage expressed as a decimal value. For example, crimson can be written as either rgb(220, 20, 60) or as rgb(86.3%, 7.8%, 23.5%) — both are valid. The channel values we use for computations if a pixel is crimson are the percentages expressed as decimal values, that is .863, .078, .235.

If a pixel is black, the channel values we use for computations are all 0, since black can be written as rgb(0, 0, 0) or as rgb(0%, 0%, 0%). If a pixel is white, the channel values we use for computations are all 1, since white can be written as rgb(255, 255, 255) or as rgb(100%, 100%, 100%).

Note that wherever we have full transparency (an alpha equal to 0), the result is identical to the other layer.

difference

The name of this blend mode might provide a clue about what the blending function fB() does. The result is the absolute value of the difference between the corresponding channel values for the two layers.

First off, this means that if the corresponding pixels in the two layers have identical RGB values (i.e. Chs = Chd for every one of the three channels), then the resulting layer’s pixel is black since the differences for all three channels are 0.

Secondly, since the absolute value of the difference between any positive number and 0 leaves that number unchanged, it results in the corresponding result pixel having the same RGB value as the other layer’s pixel if a layer’s pixel is black (all channels equal 0).

If the black pixel is in the top (source) layer, replacing its channel values with 0 in our formula gives us:

Ch = fB(0, Chd) = |0 - Chd| = |-Chd| = Chd

If the black pixel is in the bottom (destination) layer, replacing its channel values with 0 in our formula gives us:

Ch = fB(Chs, 0) = |Chs - 0| = |Chs| = Chs

Finally, since the absolute value of the difference between any positive subunitary number and 1 gives us the complement of that number, it results that if a layer’s pixel is white (has all channels 1), the corresponding result pixel is the other layer’s pixel fully inverted (what filter: invert(1) would do to it).

If the white pixel is in the top (source) layer, replacing its channel values with 1 in our formula gives us:

Ch = fB(1, Chd) = |1 - Chd| = 1 - Chd

If the white pixel is in the bottom (destination) layer, replacing its channel values with 1 in our formula gives us:

For the second and last blend mode we’re looking at today, the result is twice the product of the two channel values, subtracted from their sum:

Ch = fB(Chs, Chd) = Chs + Chd - 2·Chs·Chd

Since both values are in the [0, 1] interval, their product is always at most equal to the smallest of them, so twice the product is always at most equal to their sum.

If we consider a black pixel in the top (source) layer, then replace Chs with 0 in the formula above, we get the following result for the corresponding result pixel’s channels:

Ch = fB(0, Chd) = 0 + Chd - 2·0·Chd = Chd - 0 = Chd

If we consider a black pixel in the bottom (destination) layer, then replace Chd with 0 in the formula above, we get the following result for the corresponding result pixel’s channels:

Now, let’s turn to the “what” of blend modes

Here comes the interesting part — the examples!

Text state change effect

Let’s say we have a paragraph with a link:

We start by setting a few basic styles to put our text in the middle of the screen, bump up its font-size, set a background on the body and a color on both the paragraph and the link.

The next step is to create an absolutely positioned pseudo-element that covers the entire link and has its background set to currentColor.

The above looks like we’ve messed things up… but have we really? What we have here is a gold rectangle on top of gold text. And if you’ve paid attention to how the two blend modes discussed above work, then you’ve probably already guessed what’s next — we blend the two sibling nodes within the link (the pseudo-element rectangle and the text content) using difference, and since they’re both gold, it results that what they have in common — the text — becomes black.

Note that we have to isolate the paragraph to prevent blending with the body background. While this is only an issue in Firefox (and given we have a very dark background on the body, it’s not too noticeable) and is fine in Chrome, keep in mind that, according to the spec, what Firefox does is actually correct. It’s Chrome that’s behaving in a buggy way here, so we should have the isolation property set in case the bug gets fixed.

Alright, but we want this to happen only if the link is focused or hovered. Otherwise, the pseudo-element isn’t visible — let’s say it’s scaled down to nothing.

We now have our state change, but it looks rough, so let’s add a transition!

It would look even better if our pseudo grew not from nothing in the middle, but from a thin line at the bottom. This means we need to set the transform-origin on the bottom edge (at 100% vertically and whatever value horizontally) and initially scale our pseudo to something slightly more than nothing along the y axis.

Something else I’d like to do here is replace the font of the paragraph with a more aesthetically appealing one, so let’s take care of that too! But we now have a different kind of problem: the end of the ‘d’ sticks out of the rectangle on :focus/:hover.

In case you’re wondering why we’re setting this padding on both the right and the left side instead of just setting a padding-right, the reason is illustrated below. This demo with a multi-word link above also highlights another issue when we reduce the viewport width.

One quick fix here would be to set display: inline-block on the link. This isn’t a perfect solution. It also breaks when the link text is longer than the viewport width, but it works in this particular case, so let’s just leave it here now and we’ll come back to this problem in a little while.

Let’s now consider the situation of a light theme. Since there’s no way to get white instead of black for the link text on :hover or :focus by blending two identical highlight layers that are both not white, we need a bit of a different approach here, one that doesn’t involve using just blend modes.

What we do in this case is first set the background, the normal paragraph text color, and the link text color to the values we want, but inverted. I was initially doing this inversion manually, but then I got the suggestion of using the Sass invert() function, which is a very cool idea that really simplifies things. Then, after we have this dark theme that’s basically the light theme we want inverted, we get our desired result by inverting everything again with the help of the CSS invert() filter function.

Tiny caveat here: we cannot set filter: invert(1) on the body or html elements because this is not going to behave the way we expect it to and we won’t be getting the desired result. But we can set both the background and the filter on a wrapper around our paragraph.

Something else we need to be careful with is the following: all descendants of our section get inverted when we use this technique. And this is probably not what we want in the case of img elements — I certainly don’t expect to see the images in a blog post inverted when I switch from the dark to the light theme. Consequently, we should reverse the filter inversion on every img descendant of our section.

Now let’s get back to the wrapping link text issue and see if we don’t have better options than making the a elements inline-block ones.

Well, we do! We can blend two background layers instead of blending the text content and a pseudo. One layer gets clipped to the text, while the other one is clipped to the border-box and its vertical size animates between 5% initially and 100% in the hovered and focused cases.

Note that we don’t even have a pseudo-element anymore, so we’ve taken some of the CSS on it, moved it on the link itself, and tweaked it to suit this new technique. We’ve switched from using mix-blend-mode to using background-blend-mode; we’re now transitioning background-size of transform and, in the :focus and :hover states; and we’re now changing not the transform, but a custom property representing the vertical component of the background-size.

Much better, though this isn’t a perfect solution either.

The first problem is one you’ve surely noticed if you checked the caption’s live demo link in Firefox: it doesn’t work at all. This is due to a Firefox bug I apparently reported back in 2018, then forgot all about until I started toying with blend modes and hit it again.

The second problem is one that’s noticeable in the recording. The links seem somewhat faded. This is because, for some reason, Chrome blends inline elements like links (note that this won’t happen with block elements like divs) with the background of their nearest ancestor (the section in this case) if these inline elements have background-blend-mode set to anything but normal.

Even more weirdly, setting isolation: isolate on the link or its parent paragraph doesn’t stop this from happening. I still had a nagging feeling it must have something to do with context, so I decided to keep throwing possible hacks at it, and hope maybe something ends up working. Well, I didn’t have to spend much time on it. Setting opacity to a subunitary (but still close enough to 1 so it’s not noticeable that it’s not fully opaque) value fixes it.

The final problem is another one that’s noticeable in the recording. If you look at the ‘r’ at the end of “Amur” you can notice its right end is cut out as it falls outside the background rectangle. This is particularly noticeable if you compare it with the ‘r’ in “leopard.”

I didn’t have high hopes for fixing this one, but threw the question to Twitter anyway. And what do you know, it can be fixed! Using box-decoration-break in combination with the padding we have already set can help us achieve the desired effect!

Note that box-decoration-break still needs the -webkit- prefix for all WebKit browsers, but unlike in the case of properties like background-clip where at least one value is text, auto-prefixing tools can take care of the problem just fine. That’s why I haven’t included the prefixed version in the code above.

Another suggestion I got was to add a negative margin to compensate for the padding. I’m going back and forth on this one — I can’t decide whether I like the result better with or without it. In any event, it’s an option worth mentioning.

Still, I have to admit that animating just the background-position or the background-size of a gradient is a bit boring. But thanks to Houdini, we can now get creative and animate whatever component of a gradient we wish, even though this is only supported in Chromium at the moment. For example, the radius of a radial-gradient() like below or the progress of a conic-gradient().

Invert just an area of an element (or a background)

This is the sort of effect I often see achieved by either using element duplication — the two copies are layered one on top of the other, where one of them has an invert filter and clip-path is used on the top one in order to show both of layers. Another route is layering a second element with an alpha low enough you cannot even tell it’s there and a backdrop-filter.

Both these approaches get the job done if we want to invert a part of the entire element with all its content and descendants, but they cannot help us when we want to invert just a part of the background — both filter and backdrop-filter affect entire elements, not just their backgrounds. And while the new filter() function (already supported by Safari) does have effect solely on background layers, it affects the entire area of the background, not just a part of it.

This is where blending comes in. The technique is pretty straightforward: we have a background layer, part of which we want to invert and one or more gradient layers that give us a white area where we want inversion of the other layer and transparency (or black) otherwise. Then we blend using one of the two blend modes discussed today. For the purpose of inversion, I prefer exclusion (it’s one character shorter than difference).

Here’s a first example. We have a square element that has a two-layer background. The two layers are a picture of a cat and a gradient with a sharp transition between white and transparent.

This gives us the following result. We’ve also set dimensions, a border-radius, shadows, and prettified the text in the process, but all that stuff isn’t really important in this context:

Next, we just need one more CSS declaration to invert the lower left half:

Note how the text is not affected by inversion; it’s only applied to the background.

You probably know the interactive before-and-after image sliders. You may have even seen something of the kind right here on CSS-Tricks. I’ve seen it on Compressor.io, which I often use to compress images, including the ones used in these articles!

Our goal is to create something of the kind using a single HTML element, under 100 bytes of JavaScript — and not even much CSS!

Our element is going to be a range input. We don’t set its min or max attributes, so they default to 0 and 100, respectively. We don’t set the value attribute either, so it defaults to 50, which is also the value we give a custom property, --k, set in its style attribute.

In the CSS, we start with a basic reset, then we make our input a block element that occupies the entire viewport height. We also give dimensions and dummy backgrounds to its track and thumb just so that we can start seeing stuff on the screen right away.

The next step is to add another background layer on the track, a linear-gradient one where the separation line between transparent and white depends on the current range input value, --k, and then blend the two.

Note that the order of the two background layers of the track doesn’t matter as both exclusion and difference are commutative.

It’s starting to look like something, but dragging the thumb does nothing to move the separation line. This is happening because the current value, --k (on which the gradient’s separation line position, --p, depends), doesn’t get automatically updated. Let’s fix that with a tiny bit of JavaScript that gets the slider value whenever it changes then sets --k to this value.

But is it really? Let’s say we do something a bit fancier for the thumb background:

The linear-gradient() creates the thin vertical separation line, the radial-gradient() creates the circle, and the two conic-gradient() layers create the arrows.

The problem is now obvious when dragging the thumb from one end to the other: the separation line doesn’t remain fixed to the thumb’s vertical midline.

When we set --p to calc(var(--k)*1%), the separation line moves from 0% to 100%. It should really be moving from a starting point that’s half a thumb width, $thumb-r, until half a thumb width before 100%. That is, within a range that’s 100% minus a thumb width, $thumb-w. We subtract a half from each end, so that’s a whole thumb width to be subtracted. Let’s fix that!

--p: calc(#{$thumb-r} + var(--k) * (100% - #{$thumb-w}) / 100);

But the way range inputs work, their border-box moving within the limits of the track’s content-box (Chrome) or within the limits of the actual input’s content-box (Firefox)… this still doesn’t feel right. It would look way better if the thumb’s midline (and, consequently, the separation line) went all the way to the viewport edges.

We cannot change how range inputs work, but we can make the input extend outside the viewport by half a thumb width to the left and by another half a thumb width to the right. This makes its width equal to that of the viewport, 100vw, plus an entire thumb width, $thumb-w.

A fancier version of this (inspired by the Compressor.io website) is to put the input within a card whose 3D rotation also changes when the mouse moves over it.

We could also use a vertical slider. This is slightly more complex as our only reliable cross-browser way of creating custom styled vertical sliders is to apply a rotation on them, but this would also rotate the background. What we do is set the --p value and these backgrounds on the (not rotated) slider container, then keep the input and its track completely transparent.

This can be seen in action in the demo below, where I’m inverting a photo of me showing off my beloved Kreator hoodie.

We may of course use a radial-gradient() for a cool effect too:

The inverted area of the background doesn’t necessarily have to be created by a gradient. It can also be the area behind a heading’s text, as shown in this older article about contrasting text against a background image.

Gradual inversion

The blending technique for inversion is more powerful than using filters in more than one way. It also allows us to apply the effect gradually along a gradient. For example, the left side is not inverted at all, but then we progress to the right all the way to full inversion.

In order to understand how to get this effect, we must first understand how to get the invert(p) effect, where p can be any value in the [0%, 100%] interval (or in the [0, 1] interval if we use the decimal representation).

The first method, which works for both difference and exclusion is setting the alpha channel of our white to p. This can be seen in action in the demo below, where dragging the slider controls the invrsion progress:

In case you’re wondering about the hsl(0, 0%, 100% / 100%) notation, this is now a valid way of representing a white with an alpha of 1, according the spec.

Furthermore, due to the way filter: invert(p) works in the general case (that is, scaling every channel value to a squished interval [Min(p, q), Max(p, q)]), where q is the complement of p (or q = 1 - p) before inverting it (subtracting it from 1), we have the following for a generic channel Ch when partly inverting it:

1 - (q + Ch·(p - q)) = = 1 - (1 - p + Ch·(p - (1 - p))) = = 1 - (1 - p + Ch·(2·p - 1)) = = 1 - (1 - p + 2·Ch·p - Ch) = = 1 - 1 + p - 2·Ch·p + Ch = = Ch + p - 2·Ch·p

What we got is exactly the formula for exclusion where the other channel is p! Therefore, we can get the same effect as filter: invert(p) for any p in the [0%, 100%] interval by using the exclusion blend mode when the other layer is rgb(p, p, p).

This means we can have gradual inversion along a linear-gradient() that goes from no inversion at all along the left edge, to full inversion along the right edge), with the following:

Note that using a gradient from black to white for gradual inversion only works with the exclusion blend mode and not with the difference. The result produced by difference in this case, given its formula, is a pseudo gradual inversion that doesn’t pass through the 50% grey in the middle, but through RGB values that have each of the three channels zeroed at various points along the gradient. That is why the contrast looks starker. It’s also perhaps a bit more artistic, but that’s not really something I’m qualified to have an opinion about.

Having different levels of inversion across a background doesn’t necessarily need to come from a black to white gradient. It can also come from a black and white image as the black areas of the image would preserve the background-color, the white areas would fully invert it and we’d have partial inversion for everything in between when using the exclusion blend-mode. difference would again give us a starker duotone result.

This can be seen in the following interactive demo where you can change the background-color and drag the separation line between the results produced by the two blend modes.

The basic idea here is we have two layers with only black and white pixels.

Let’s consider an element with two pseudos, each having a background that’s a repeating CSS gradient with sharp stops:

Depending on the browser and the display, the edges between black and white may look jagged… or not.

Just to be on the safe side, we can tweak our gradients to get rid of this issue by leaving a tiny distance, $e, between the black and the white:

Then we can place them one on top of the other and set mix-blend-mode to exclusion or difference, as they both produce the same result here.

Wherever the top layer is black, the result of the blending operation is identical to the other layer, whether that’s black or white. So, black over black produces black, while black over white produces white.

Wherever the top layer is white, the result of the blending operation is identical to the other layer inverted. So, white over black produces white (black inverted), while white over white produces black (white inverted).

However, depending on the browser, the actual result we see may look as desired (Chromium) or like the ::before got blended with the greyish background we’ve set on the body and then the result blended with the ::after (Firefox, Safari).

The way Chromium behaves is a bug, but that’s the result we want. And we can get it in Firefox and Safari, too, by either setting the isolation property to isolate on the parent div (demo) or by removing the mix-blend-mode declaration from the ::before (as this would ensure the blending operation between it and the body remains the default normal, which means no blending) and only setting it on the ::after (demo).

Of course, we can also simplify things and make the two blended layers be background layers on the element instead of its pseudos. This also means switching from mix-blend-mode to background-blend-mode.

This gives us the exact same visual result, but eliminates the need for pseudo-elements, eliminates the potential unwanted mix-blend-mode side effect in Firefox and Safari, and reduces the amount of CSS we need to write.

The basic idea is we have a scene that’s half black and half white, and a white item moving from one side to the other. The item layer and the scene layer get then blended using either difference or exclusion (they both produce the same result).

When the item is, for example, a ball, the simplest way to achieve this result is to use a radial-gradient for it and a linear-gradient for the scene and then animate the background-position to make the ball oscillate.

This may look like we’re over-complicating things considering that we’re getting the same visual result, but it’s actually what we need to do if the moving item isn’t just a disc, but a more complex shape, and the motion isn’t just limited to oscillation, but it also has a rotation and a scaling component.

More examples

We won’t be going into details about the “how” behind these demos as the basic idea of the blending effect using exclusion or difference is the same as before and the geometry/animation parts are outside the scope of this article. However, for each of the examples below, there is a link to a CodePen demo in the caption and a lot of these Pens also come with a recording of me coding them from scratch.

We’re not necessarily limited to just black and white. Using a contrast filter with a subunitary value (filter: contrast(.65) in the example below) on a wrapper, we can turn the black into a dark grey and the white into a light grey:

If we want to make it look like we have a XOR effect between black shapes on a white background, we can use filter: invert(1) on the wrappers of the shapes, like in the example below:

And if we want something milder like dark grey shapes on a light grey background, we don’t go for full inversion, but only for partial one. This means using a subunitary value for the invert filter like in the example below where we use filter: invert(.85):

It doesn’t necessarily have to be something like a looping or loading animation. We can also have a XOR effect between an element’s background and its offset frame. Just like in the previous examples, we use CSS filter inversion if we want the background and the frame to be black and their intersection to be white.

Another example would be having a XOR effect on hovering/ focusing and clicking a close button. The example below shows both night and light theme cases:

Bring me to life

Things can look a bit sad only in black and white, so there are few things we can do to put some life into such demos.

The first tactic would be to use filters. We can break free from the black and white constraint by using sepia() after lowering the contrast (as this function has no effect over pure black or white). Pick the hue using hue-rotate() and then fine tune the result using brightness() and saturate() or contrast().

For example, taking one of the previous black and white demos, we could have the following filter chain on the wrapper:

For even more control over the result, there’s always the option of using SVG filters.

The second tactic would be to add another layer, one that’s not black and white. For example, in this radioactive pie demo I made for the first CodePen challenge of March, I used a purple ::before pseudo-element on the body that I blended with the pie wrapper.

This turns the black wrapper purple and the white parts green (which is purple inverted).

Another option would be blending the entire wrapper again with another layer, this time using a blend mode different from difference or exclusion. Doing so would allow us more control over the result so we’re not limited to just complementaries (like black and white, or purple and green). That, however, is something we’ll have to cover in a future article.

Finally, there’s the option of using difference (and not exclusion) so that we get black where two identical (not necessarily white) layers overlap. For example, the difference between coral and coral is always going to be 0 on all three channels, which means black. This means we can adapt a demo like the offset and XOR frame one to get the following result:

With some properly set transparent borders and background clipping, we can also make this work for gradient backgrounds:

Similarly, we can even have an image instead of a gradient!

Note that this means we also have to invert the image background when we invert the element in the second theme scenario. But that should be no problem, because in this article we’ve also learned how to do that: by setting background-color to white and blending the image layer with it using background-blend-mode: exclusion!

Closing thoughts

Just these two blend modes can help us get some really cool results without resorting to canvas, SVG or duplicated layers. But we’ve barely scratched the surface here. In future articles, we’ll dive into how other blend modes work and what we can achieve with them alone or in combination with previous ones or with other CSS visual effects such as filters. And trust me, the more tricks you have up your sleeve, the cooler the results you’re able to achieve get!

Today’s Movie: Hollywood Air Force (also released as “Weekend Warriors”)

Year of Release: 1986

Stars: Chris Lemmon, Vic Tayback, Lloyd Bridges

Director: Bert Convy

This movie is not on my list of essential films.

NOTE: This installment of Sports Analogies Hidden In Classic Movies is being done as part of something called the Second So Bad It’s Good Blog-A-Thon being hosted by Taking Up Room. I keep telling her this will easily be the worst movie in this event, but she thinks the competition is stiffer than I think. You’ll have to be the judge; you can see all the contributors to this blog-a-thon here:

Days One, Two And Three

The Story:

If we were to have a contest as to the bona fides for a bad movie, I would bet a large amount of money I win on this one phrase:

“Produced and directed by Bert Convy.”

When you have a D-:List comedy bankrolled and directed by a 1970s/80s game-show host…well, doesn’t “bad” just seem to be in the cards?

If that’s not enough, let’s talk about this movie’s first-class pedigree for “bad.” The best way to describe it is the 1950s kids from the “teen” comedy “Porky’s” grew up, graduated, and ended up in the “Cold War” American military of the 1960s. But fret not, you fans of the “Porky’s” franchise…this movie still comes with a full complement of bawdy sex and bodily-function jokes, complete with a bad-taste-defining “hula dance” and a “fart-lighting” scene.

The plot is equally as formulaic; it’s all about the protagonist and his buddies and the perennial struggles against authority. In the case of “Porky’s,” “authority” comes in the form of overweight gym teachers and morbidly-obese brothel owners. Naturally, “Hollywood Air Force” replaces those with the “out-to-get-everybody” Congressman Ernest W. Balljoy (played by Graham Jarvis) and the stoogish Sergeant Elroy Burdge (played by Vic Tayback).

Sergeant Elroy Burdge…”the world’s ugliest hot fudge sundae.”

Set in the height of the Cold War in 1961, “Hollywood Air Force” revolves around an Air National Guard unit based in Southern California comprised of an exceptionally not-very-military group of misfit Hollywood actors, writers, stuntmen, make-up artists, and various studio personnel. The one thing they all in have in common is they joined the Air National Guard in order to avoid being drafted into full-time active military service; hence the alternative title “Weekend Warriors.”

The leader of this group of misfits who when not spending his weekends as part of the California Air National Guard’s 73rd Transport Wing is a Hollywood screenwriter named Vince Tucker (played by Chris Lemmon…yes, he’s the son of Jack...).

Lloyd Bridges, Bert Cony, and Chris Lemmon

Flyer Tucker and his band of merry airmen fall into disfavor with the visiting Congressman Balljoy when he walks into some of their shenanigans during an inspection of the 73rd’s base. As a result, Balljoy announces in a national press release that the 73rd is ready to be called up for active Air Force duty to meet a looming threat as the Soviets are actively building the Berlin Wall.

However,it is Balljoy’s intent to have the 73rd not only out of his district, but sent to an isolated Pacific island. To avoid this, the unit must pass a full Air National Guard readiness inspection; otherwise they will be called up to active duty and lose their status as “Weekend Warriors.” (Yeah, I know that doesn’t make much sense. You would think failing the inspection would get them sent somewhere for training, but that’s one of several reasons why this is a bad movie.)

But this is where they put the “Hollywood” in “Hollywood Air Force.” Led by Tucker, the men of the 73rd come up with a plan that will thwart Balljoy and insure they remain in California. They use their connections to hire an entire Hollywood production company using it’s “magic” to portray the 73rd as a top-notch transport unit.

The show is a success, Tucker and the 73rd dazzle the Air Force brass, Congressman Balljoy and his guest, a stone-faced Romanian ambassador, whose presence is another thing which makes no sense. Balljoy fully expected the 73rd to be the Air Guard’s answer to the Keystopne Kops, so why would you have him there knowing full well he would report back to the Soviets what a bunch of stumble-bums the American military was?

Here’s the bottom line. If you can get past the stuff that just doesn’t add up, and if you want to laugh at the same kind of stuff you did when you were 12, this movie won’t disappoint.

If nothing else, you can get a few chuckles out of the 73rd’s commanding officer, Colonel Archer…he’s basically Lloyd Bridges reprising the “picked the wrong week to quit smoking guy” from “Airplane!” spiced with a few dashes of “Colonel Klink.”

The Hidden Sports Analogy:

At first, this may sound strange, but there’s an art to being a professional loser. After all, nobody sets out to lose every night. The most inept sports teams throught history all had one thing in common. Be they the 1962 New York Mets, the 2008 Detroit Lions, or the 1972 Philadelphia 76ers just to name a few…well, they all had one thing in common. They were all trying to win.

You can’t say the same for the Washington Generals. For the better part of seven decades, the Generals’ job has been to play the foil to the clown princes of basketball, the Harlem Globetrotters. Granted, there was a script; the Generals weren’t supposed to win. They were the “straight man,” the “Abbott” the the Globetrotters’ “Costello.” The trick was there had to be enough legitimate basketball to make the gags work. The Generals would run up and down the floor with the Globetrotters and hit their share of shots for forty of forty-eight minutes, the other eight ear-marked for the Globetrotters’ half-court heaves, dribbling wizardry, the trademark confetti and ice-bucket tricks, all preceded by the passing-drill warm-ups to the dulcid tones of “Sweet Georgia Brown,”

The that was the formula; a few parts crowd work, a few parts tomfoolery, and a few parts actual basketball baked into a cake of pure entertainment…with the stars winning at the end. Well…with the stars almost always winning.

A Harlem Globetrotters “game” was a bit like the basketball version of professional wrestling in terms of being more entertainment than sports and having a pre-determined ending. But because it was basketball, maintaining the illusion of the game being somewhat “real” required the Washington Generals to look like they were trying to win when everybody expected they wouldn’t. In fact, nobody lost more consistently than the Washington Generals or their various aliases (Boston Shamrocks, Atlantic City Seagulls, and Baltimore Rockets to name a few). Regardless of name, they have lost to the Globetrotters more than 17,000 times since 1952. The Generals long-time player/coach “Red” Klotz used to compare his team to Ginger Rogers; they had to keep up with the greatness of Fred Astaire, except doing it backwards and in heels.

That brings us to that “almost always” thing. It was January 5th, 1971. when the Globetrotters faced off with the Generals at the University of Tennessee-Martin, The problem was the Globetrotters were without their featured star, Curly Neal. Since he was the guy who filled most of the game with his dribbling ball-handling wizardry, the Globetrotters were without much of the gags present in the “show” part of the game. As a result, they played this much more like an actual basketball game.

It so happened that this would be the day the Generals (playing as the Jersey Reds) played a tremendous game. The had one of those days where everything went their way; they couldn’t miss shots if they tried. Next thing you know, they were leading the Globetrotters by 12 points with only a few minutes left in the game. In an attempt to keep to the script, the Globetrotters mounted a comeback to take a 99-98 lead with only a few seconds left on the clock.

The Reds in-bounded the ball to “Red” Klotz, their 50-year old player/coach, who promptly tossed up a two-handed set shot that clanked around the rim, then dropped in to give the Reds a 100-99 lead as the buzzer sounded.

But much like a rigged Chicago election (or when the U.S. men’s basketball team got robbed in the gold medal game in the 1972 Olympics), there was some shenanigans involved in adding time to the clock to give the Globetrotters a chance for a last-second shot. But despite being given several opportunities, the Globetrotters’ other main star Meadowlark Lemon bricked a bunch of close-in hook shots at the buzzer. Finally, they ran out of reasons to extend the game without making it plainly obvious they were just trying to get the win for the Globetrotters, and the Reds/Generals were finally winners. The popular story is the crowd booed and children cried when the Globetrotters lost.

Klotz passed away in 2014, and despite being asked several times, he never admitted whether he was actually trying to make that shot. It matters little, because for that brief moment in 1971, The Washington General conquered the Harlem Globetrotters’ world.

The Moral of The Story:

Sometimes being bad is the point; it takes talent to be reliably bad. Just ask Bert Convy or the Washington Generals.

Things to Consider When Designing a Pool

Getting a pool for your home needs to be planned well. It’s not just about digging a wide space, putting tiles and filling it with water.

You will be considering certain factors in order to build one and make it effective and efficient. And be just the right pool for your home.

To help you get started, we have this helpful guide on the things you need to consider when designing a pool!

Have a budget.

You need to know your budget so that you could decide how big your pool could be.

This includes the construction and other unexpected expenses that will arrive.

Then, look for a contractor who can do the work for you with the design you like and the budget you have.

Consider the users.

The users are important especially if there are kids.

But even if there are no kids, you should still see to it that everyone using it observe safety pool rules.

When kids are swimming, someone must be watching them. Do not let them go near the drains, too.

Do not bring glass or anything breakable in the pool especially with kids around.

If possible, you can place a fence around your pool. You can even put in some alarms if someone intends to use it without your permission.

The pool at this Dry Creek Residence overlooks the valley. Its earth tones make the entire area inviting and relaxing.
