Canadian Fashion Shows Up
My husband is working on a book on hockey during the Cold War, so naturally he is interested in the history of Canada, and he gets this popular magazine on Canadian history. Imagine my surprise to see cover article on the history of fashion. The story by Cheryl Thompson, who teaches at Toronto Metropolitan University, features short, biographical sketches, with pictures of course, of Caribbean Canadian designers, choreographers, journalists, and models who made their names in the 1970s and 1980s, including Ola Shanks, Paul Cornish, and Winston Kong. Many of them were the first to break through racial barriers in their fields.
Thompson has also written Beauty in a Box: Detangling the Roots of Canada’s Black Beauty Culture which you can find here: https://www.wlupress.wlu.ca/Books/B/Beauty-in-a-Box
