like can you imagine toshi who wakes up after he hears your baby crying? he’d told you to stay in bed — you’re tired, he’ll take care of them — and you’re on the brink of falling asleep again but you look over to where he goes by the cradle and reaches in to pick up your baby and you can see the way an affectionate and loving smile grows on his lips from the moment he reaches down. your baby immediately finds calmness in the way he gently placed their head on his shoulder and holds them close to him, gently shushing until the cries turn into little babbles. it’s such an amazing thing to see, you know? and the artist said the same thing about how toshi, who’s normally seen as a figure of strength and power, holds this tiny life in his hands with so much care and tenderness and smiles at them as if they’ve given him the world just by existing. the world that he promises to give back to them no matter what it should cost him. see, given toshi’s family life with his parent’s divorce and the cold environment he grew up with under his mother and grandmother (basically they never like... gave him the validation and care for him or anything he cared about as a child? like he never really had the time to be sad about his dad leaving even though he was such an important figure in his life and the safest place for him and his growing heart. he lost that and his mom never tried to pick up those pieces and told him it wasn’t something to cry for. fuck that hoe i wanna fight her soooo baaaaad but if i talk about this i’ll never shut up i already went to mix with this before) but anyways, toshi and you both made a promise to each other long before you found out you were pregnant. you both promised that your relationship wouldn’t be a repeat of his parents’ relationship. that you guys would talk about the things either of you had inside your hearts instead of ignoring them and leaving them be. and should you both have children (which you did end up doing!) that you’d listen to them and their feelings, never to push them or each other away when they came to you with something. and seeing the way he gently puts his baby back to sleep, the way he turns his neck to look down at their sleeping face, it’s what reaffirms those promises to love and care for his child. that baby holds toshi’s heart in their little hands and they don’t even know it yet, but you get to watch those little moments between them that are silent and the world stops spinning, letting you cherish the sight and to hold it close to you
