Image Shot: Four Season Mumbai Mixologist: @varunsudhakar84 Be someone's shot of whiskey than everyone's cup of tea. Whiskey sour, one of the classic cocktails in history, the name was introduced to me in my final year of college. But I learnt to savour a good whiskey sour after my friend and mixologist, Varun Sudhakar introduced me to it. This is one cocktail enjoyed widespread and very popular. It is a simple a cocktail as you can get, there's obviously a strong spirit, water, sugar, a citrus element. I always figured this drink to be sour, sweet, with a strong punch. The recipe for this cocktail was first seen in 'The Bartender's guide' by Jerry Thomas in 1862, but historians say the sours have existed many decades prior, as these were very popular drinks in naval ships. Professional sailor mainly suffered from scurvy and other sea sicknesses, it was discovered that citrus helped cure such health issues. So sailors started mixing up a few ingredients with their gins, whiskeys and serving the crew, obviously watered down to prevent intoxicating and this was then later bought to shore and eventually developed into Rum Sours and Whisky sours and found its way into the books of Jerry Thomas. This simple classic cocktail has been rediscovered in many ways. Mixologists and bartenders have found ways to explore manipulate with losing that balance, keep the traditions intact yet give it a twist. Whisky sour has had a very interesting journey from those sailors in the ships to the exquisite bars that we now know of. Where do you think this will simple classic cocktail will go next? ... I recently purchased a bottle at auction of the Glenlivet 12 from the 80s. And I’d have to say it was quite different liquid entirely. Whether from old bottle effect, or distillery expansion in recent years there was certainly some more oxidative notes. Nuttier in general but more pineapple qualities that the Glenlivet “the original” was famous for. However, The Glenlivet 18 remains a real treat, a combo of American oak and sherry butts give the quintessential tropical fruit notes and ripe banana that the distillery is famous for. I don’t know what it is about looking at the water and drinking but the two go together spectacularly! #macallanmonday and a tale of three #macallan bottles and the power of the internet. #macallaneditionno1 comes out 4 years ago at around $90, and it’s not a huge seller. By the time #macallaneditionno4 is released the no 1 is selling on the secondary and #whiskyauctions for between $750 to $900. (My average on 5 bottles is around $$110). The blue box #macallan30 comes out early 2000’s dating the juice back to the mid 1970’s and sits on shelves or is gifted amongst the elite priced at around $2000 I would assume back then. (I paid $2500 for mine). Last but not least #themacallan 2017 Exceptional Single Cask which I paid $249 for has gone on auction between $1800 to $3000 the last 2 years. So three #scotch bottles, one is no age statement, one is a single cask, and the other prime juice from the 70’s. One went up 9 times, one is up 3 times, and one 7 to 10 times currently. Which would you think is the best #whisky here, and which do you think by state of the #scotchwhisky current market is pure #marketing? As a #whiskyinvestor and a #whiskycollector having all three is key to me, as you can see from the #roi currently.
