Smoking a Tatuaje Gran Cojonu cigar and sipping the Dragon's Milk Origin Small Batch bourbon from New Holland Brewing. This 5 year old, 95 proof bourbon is an easy drinker with a silky mouth-feel and notes of chocolate, stone fruit jam, and baking spices. ..... Putting some smoke in the air to remember the Cocoanut Grove Fire on this day, November 28, 1942, 80 years ago. This remains the deadliest nightclub fire in U.S. history and the 2nd deadliest building fire in U.S. history. 492 people lost their lives and 130 were injured that night. The Grove was packed that night with servicemen, Buck Jones' party, and locals watching Goody Goodelle and Arthur Blake when a fire broke out at 10:15 pm. Despite attempts to douse it, the flames quickly spread across the decorations, false ceiling, and fabric covered walls. Within five minutes the entire, multi-level club was in flames. Many patrons tried to escape through the main doors but were trapped by the single revolving door. Other escape routes were blocked, locked, or boarded up. The doors that did work opened inward trapping more. Military personnel from nearby bars raced to help, while those that had escaped, like Coast Guardsmen Clifford Johnson, went back inside to rescue as many as they could. Johnson went back in no fewer than four times to rescue people while looking for his date who, unknown to him, had safely escaped. USCG shore patrol sent two companies of men, stretchers and trucks. 39 servicemen died and 27 were injured. Johnson suffered 3rd degree burns across 55% of his body but survived after 21 months in the hospital. The fire led to changes in building codes and advancements in treatments for burn victims. .... My back has been killing me all week. Thankfully the pain is starting to ease but sitting is still the most comfortable position for me. Decided to sneak in a cigar by the fire before the next storm rolls through tomorrow so I grabbed this bottle of Isaac Bowman Port Barrel finished bourbon and a Tatuaje 2021 Cojonu cigar. The whiskey has some nice notes of cashew, berries, and stone fruit. .... On this day, March 9, 1862, two ironclade ships locked in battle for the first time when the USS Monitor met the CSS Virginia (built on the hull of the USS Merrimack). The Virginia had already worked her way through the federal blockade by destroying the USS Congress and USS Cumberland as well as setting the USS Minnesota a fire after she ran aground on March 8. The Monitor was able to come up and position herself to defend the Minnesota in the night. When the Virginia returned on March 9 they found a strange ship looking like a "cheese on a raft". The first shot was fired by the Virginia and missed the Monitor hitting the Minnesota which answered with a broadside. The two ships traded blows for three hours, often at point blank range, with the Virginia grounding at 10 am. The battle ended when a shell exploded against the Monitor's pilot house, blinding her Captain temporarily. The XO took over but in the temporary moment when the Monitor briefly retired the Virginia believed their opponent had withdrawn. With a falling tide and enough damage requiring repair the Virginia withdrew. With the Virginia's withdrawal and orders to protect the Minnesota the Monitor did not pursue her opponent. In the end each side claimed victory. The Virginia would be scuttled on May 9 to prevent her capture and the Monitor was lost in a storm off Cape Hatteras on December 31. ... Happy birthday to my hometown, that toddlin town, my kind of town Chicago! To celebrate the city's incorporation on this day, March 3, 1837, I'm drinking the Koval single barrel rye whiskey and smoking an Arturo Fuente Gran Reserva. The whiskey is full of spice, sweet brown sugar, and mint and is so good. .... "Chicago is a town, a city that doesn't ever have to measure itself against any other city. Other places have to measure themselves against it. It’s big, it’s outgoing, it’s tough, it’s opinionated, and everybody’s got a story." —Anthony Bourdain .... Smoking an Undercrown All Dekk'd Out 10 year anniversary cigar and drinking a Single Barrel Cask Strength Selection of Old Forrester while I listen to @beyondthebreakerspodcast episode on USCGC Blackthorn. Notes of cinnamon, baking spices, some leather, and light wood notes with lots of mouth tingle. .... Putting some smoke in the air tonight for the 23 crew of the USCGC Blackthorn, lost this night, January 28, 1980, while heading back to homeport from the yards in Tampa Bay. At 8:21 pm the 180-ft bouy tender collided with the 605-ft tank vessel SS Capricorn. A series of failures, including other marine traffic, lots of radio traffic, and failures in communication led to the bow to bow collision. The collision caused little initial damage but the Capricorn's anchor ripped into Blackthorn, through several spaces, and began towing the cutter backwards causing her to eventually capsize in less than 20 seconds. Several brand new crewmen were trapped during their escape when they ended up in the engine room. Seaman Apprentice William Flores, out of boot camp for a year managed to open the lifejacket locker as Blackthorn capsized. He tossed lifejackets to his fellow crewmen and tied open the locker with his own lifejacket to ensure the remaining lifejackets would float free as Blackthorn sank. Flores lost his life that night while trying to help his fellow Coasties survive, he was 18 years old. It took 20 years for Flores to be awarded the Coast Guard Medal for his heroisim. .... Stone who born January 22, 1887. I know im a couple of days early. Stone developed Coast Guard Aviation. He worked with the Curtiss Flying School on experimental flying boats pioneering the use of aircraft for at-sea search-and-rescue. He flew scout and search missions for the USRC Onondaga before he attended Navy flight school. He was one of two pilots to successfully fly the NC-4, the first plane to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. He helped develop arrestor gear and catapults for use aboard aircraft carriers. He commanded a destroyer during Prohibition and USCG Aviation Unit Cape May where he was the only pilot willing to land in heavy seas in an attempt to rescue the crew of the Navy dirigible Akron. Launching into 40 knt winds and heavy seas that held back other rescue craft he landed on the open ocean to recover the bodies of two Akron crewmen. He broke the world seaplane speed record in 1934 with a speed of 191 mph. Smoking a Diesel Stubborn Fool, listing to some jazzy covers and an Owl hooting nearby while I explore this bottle of Fox & Oden Straight Rye. This is a sourced 4 year old rye from Ohio that is easy drinking with notes of peppercorns and toffee. .... Putting some smoke in the air and pouring one out for the crew of the Coast Guard motor lifeboat Triumph lost on this day, January 12, 1961, and sailed out to assist the floundering fishing vessel Mermaid. The storm and bar conditions that night capsized a 40-ft utility boat and a 32-ft motor lifeboat. The 32-ft MLB crew rescued the crew from the 40-ft UTB and made their way to the Lightship Columbia. Meanwhile the Triumph crew were struggling to take the Mermaid in tow. After parting both tow lines and with the Mermaid near the breakers at Peacock Spit the Triumph crew attempted one more rescue. At 8:13 pm USCG Stations heard a distress call from the Mermaid saying the Triumph had capsized and that the Mermaid was drifting into the breakers. The Mermaid was able to rescue one crewman, Engineman Joseph Petrin. The Triumph, built of wood and not designed to right itself, disappeared. The Mermaid was taken in tow by another 32-ft MLB but the battered vessel was lost when a giant wave broke over. Despite an intense search by multiple small boats, cutters, and aircraft no survivors or bodies were found. On Friday, Jan 13th Engineman Gordon Huggins was found by a beach patrol and taken to the hospital, the only survivor from the six crewmen aboard the Triumph. .... Smokinga Plasencia 149 Cosecha Privada and sipping a bottle I found here in Long Beach that was perfect for today. This is the Quincy Street Distillery North American Steamship Rye Bottled-in-Bond single malt rye. Named for the passenger ship that plied Lake Michigan from 1914-1964. It has notes of butterscotch, creamy caramel, and a bit of rye spice. .... On this day July 24, 1915, the SS Eastland capsized at her berth in the Chicago River. Considered the greatest loss of life in a Great Lakes shipwreck. Eastland was to be the first of five ships leaving for the Western Electric company picnic in Michigan City, IN, that fateful morning. Workers were dressed in their finest as they boarded with friends and family. It's unknown how many were aboard when the Captain decided to depart. Officially she was filled to capacity with 2, 572 passengers. At 7:30 am while departing the dock, the ship listed fatally to port coming to rest on the muddy floor of the Chicago River in 20 feet of water, less than 20 feet from the pier. The response was immediate from bystanders and official sources, people climbed on the hull to pull survivors and the dead from portholes and hatches, volunteers dove into the ship to retrieve people while other pulled people from the river. At the end of the day 844 were killed including 22 whole families. Many were trapped below decks and in stairwells where they had sought shelter from the rain that morning. .... July 24, 1915: "At about 7:30 a.m., R. H. McCreary, Deputy Collector of the Custom House, telephoned to the (USCG) station and said that the steamer Eastland was sinking. Power surfboat was launched by myself and seven surfmen went to the scene. We found that the Eastland had capsized with a load of passengers 2500 and a crew of 80. We succeeded in rescuing 84, and we recovered 570 bodies." - William Preston, surfman no. 1, Station Old Chicago .... #cigar #cigarafficionado #cigarlife #cigarlifestyle #cigarlover #CigarsandWhiskey #plasenciacigars #TapThatAsh #whiskey #bourbon #craftdistillery #quincystreetdistillery #whiskeyandhistory #WhiskeyAfficionado #WhiskeyLover #history #quote #uscg #coastguard #eastlanddisaster (at Coastal San Pedro) https://www.instagram.com/p/CgaxJ2Brubs/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Smoking a Monte Cristo Nicaragua Series cigar and sipping the Three Chord Honey Toast Single Barrel pick from Cypress Craft Beer and Liquor. .... Putting some smoke in the air for the crews the responded to the T2 tankers Fort Mercer and Pendleton in distress off the coast of Massachusetts 71 years ago this night, February 18, 1952. Much has been made of the rescue of the Pendleton, where Bernie Webber and his crew aboard the CG36500 rescued 32 of the 41 aboard the Pendleton. Tonight I'd like to focus on the Fort Mercer rescue efforts. Thanks to the efforts of the USCGC Yakutat, USCGC Acushnet, USCGC Eastwind, USCGC Unimak, and Air Station Salem only 5 of the Fort Mercer's 43 crew were lost. The last crewmen were rescued from the bow by a hail Mary play. Yakutat fired a messenger line across to the bow of the Fort Mercer and used a raft to rescue the last two survivors. Halloween Saturday and I'm listening to some Chicago ghost stories and the Halloween party down the hill (thanks for the invite neighbor) while is imbibe in some Dead Guy Whiskey paired with a Tatuaje Surrogates Bone Crusher cigar. This sweet malt whiskey made from the same malts as Rogue Dead Guy Ale is very easy drinking while the cigar hits you like a bone club with notes of fresh earth, old leather, and autumn bonfires. .... You can't have grown up in the Chicago area and not known of its most famous hitchhiking ghost, Resurrection Mary. Stories of Mary have been around since the 1930s. A young woman in a white dress hitchhiking along Archer Ave is seen looking for a ride between Resurrection Cemetery and the Willowbrook (Oh Henry) Ballroom. When she is picked up either near the Ballroom or along the road she says she's heading home only to disappear as the car passes Resurrection Cemetery. One man claimed to have danced with her at the Oh Henry Ballroom and then took her home only to have her disappear from his car. He went to the address she had given him the next morning onlynto find out she had been dead for years. There are tales of ghostly hitchhikers around the world and Mary is one of many but she will always be my favorite. Chicago and tales of Mary, The Excalibur, the Water Tower, Rosehill, Graceland, and Bachelors Grove Cemeteries are where my love of the supernatural started. .... “When hinges creak in doorless chambers, and strange and frightening sounds echo through the halls … Whenever candlelights flicker where the air is deathly still, that is the time when ghosts are present, practicing their terror with ghoulish delight." - Ghost Host, Disney's Haunted Mansion .... #ghoststories #halloweentime #spookyseason #halloween #cigar #CigarLover #CigarAfficionado #cigarphoto #cigarsnob #cigarlife #cigarsmoke #tatuajecigars #cigarsandwhiskey #sailorandsticks #TapThatAsh #whiskey #roguedistillery #whiskeylife #WhiskeyLover #whiskeyphoto #WhiskeyNeat #WhiskeyAfficionado #whiskeygram #whiskeyandhistory #quote #quotestagram #hauntedmansion #hitchhikingghosts (at Coastal San Pedro) https://www.instagram.com/p/CkUgxuMrPZu/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Another cool night after a hot day and I'm enjoying a bottle of Voyage 24 Jefferson's Ocean Aged at Sea and a Joya de Nicaragua Black. ..... On this day, in the early morning hours of September 8, 1934, a fire erupted aboard the SS Morro Castle as she was headed back from Havana, Cuba to New York, NY. The evening before her Captain died suddenly leaving the Chief Officer to take command as the ship faced a building Nor'easter with increasing winds and seas. The fire burned through electrical wires and plunged the ship into darkness. Flames were fed by the strong winds and the crew did not respond effectively to the building disaster. Few crew fought the fire and delayed the sounding of an alarm for passengers to begin abandoning ship. The new Captain stayed on the bridge and never took charge of the crew's effort to deal with the incident at hand and a distress call was never ordered and only one was sent out at 3:23 am. The ship was never stopped and the winds fed the flames. The crew looked out for themselves, never directing passengers to safety, or organizing to fight the fire, instead they filled and launched the few working lifeboats. Passengers, unfamiliar with safety measures, donned lifejackets and dove overboard often being knocked out or killed by the very thing that was supposed to save them. Rescue ships were slow to respond and struggled with the storm. Ultimately the burning hulk grounded near the Convention Hall at Asbury Park, NJ. No real cause was ever determined though there are theories that range from arson to spontaneous combustion. 137 passengers and crew perished in the disaster. .... “We are not going yet. It was 109 degrees today and is only now below 80, a bit too warm for the firepit so I'm sitting by the glow of my new Haunted Mansion Stretching Portrait lantern from Spirit Halloween while I smoke a Joya de Nicaragua Cabinetta cigar and sip a Heaven's Door cask strength single barrel bourbon picked for Total Wine. Coming in at 118.5 proof, this NAS Tennessee Whiskey has a 70% corn, 22% Rye, and 8% Barley mash bill. The whiskey has notes of biscuits, brown butter, some minty rye, and a nice lingering finish. .... Putting some smoke in the air tonight in remembrance of the crew of CG-6505 lost this day, September 4, 2008, with all hands just off the coast of Oahu. The four aircrew, Capt. Thomas Nelson, Lt. Cmdr. Andrew Wischmeier, Petty Officer First Class David Skimin, and Petty Officer First Class Joshua Nichols were conducting hoist training with a Station Honolulu boat crew when the hoist cable snagged on the boat causing the cable to part and forcung the aircraft to enter an unusual attitude recovery. It's nice to be home again. Heatwave hitting Southern California but this evening is beautiful, much like the weather I left in Hawaii so I'm sipping a bottle that came homenwith me from there. This is the R Field Wine Company Maker's Mark Private Selection Loretto 2022. This bottle gives me lots of cola flavors to start that merge into tobacco and oranges. Very interesting. Paired with a classic My Father Flor de las Antillas cigar. ..... This week marks the 17th anniversary of the greatest sustained rescue operation in Coast Guard history. After Hurricane Katrina slammed into the Gulf Coast of the U.S. Coast Guard aircrews launched into the rain and wind not knowing what they would face over the coming days. The first recorded rescue during the storm happened at 2:50 pm on August 29, 2005 by a helicopter crew launched from Mobile, AL. In the end more than 33,500 were rescued by air and boat. The 5,600 Coast Guard personnel deployed faced challenges they had never imagined but they exemplified the service's "Bias for Action" and improvised on the fly to solve the problems they saw one at a time.
