My last post on Donbrothers
Funfact: the wheelchair scene is Inoue script recycling again. The "there is nothing wrong with your legs, you can walk" thing has been done twice before in his shows. Once in Jetman episode 5, the other in Kiva episode 20. Sigh.....
Because one of Sun Wukong's most legendary feats is lifting an entire mountain (on which the entire universe rested upon but that's besides the point) and our sixth ranger debuts throwing rocks and later a small boulder, there's a chance they'll take the rock joke even further in reference.
Taro's character development didn't feel earned to me. Because of the "Copy Taro Theory" that wasn't disproved, it seems like he just spent the entire time in a coma. So no time to contemplate, no time for introspection. Just treat teammates worse, die, coma, then pop back up suddenly with no idea what's happening. How would he know that there's nothing wrong with Haruka's legs? As far as we know he doesn't know about the Kibi Points system, nor would he have any idea what risks Haruka and Saruhara put themselves through getting him back. So to me it just felt like he suddenly decided to be nice all of a sudden with little reason why. And you already know what I associate Taro with, so having the character that most matches me imply to fall in love with the character that mirrors my bullies, that just felt like the deepest possible INSULT to my trauma. It's this scene that made me so unbelievably angry that I swore the show off entirely. Again, thanks to you I have a better understanding now, but I'm never going to give this show another chance.
I'll be back for Revive and Geats!
Wow I didn't know the mountain/boulder parallel. That's neat.
Character development-wise, I think the only thing Tarou really knew/understood at that point was that he had been revived, and it was thanks to the efforts of his companions.
Rather than knowing there isn't something wrong, Tarou works on this "I'm a beacon of good luck" mindset. Where he's helped people before. Like with setting Tsuyoshi's shoulder, or that dude in episode one, somehow motivating him to study like some kind of good luck drug dealer. He didn't understand why Haruka, who had previously been fine, now wasn't able to walk. And so he challenged her to get up and walk.
Now, that scene was there because Momoi is supposed to represent a messianic figure like Jesus, and this was a direct religious allusion to actual biblical scripture LOL! When I sent that cllip to Nacho their reaction was:
"LOL NOT THE JESUS MIRACLE REFERENCE!"
lmaooooo.
I did worry that perhaps this scene wouldn't be too greatly received by people who really can't actually walk LOL but, it wasn't put there to be harmful, and I think its directly supposed to show a miracle and that's how its supposed to be interpreted too. Because Momoi isn't Just Some Guy, dude is sorta similar to a mythical creature.
I think his general viewpoint is rather innocent too. "You can walk." He genuinely believed this. And he believed if he encouraged her she would walk.
Imagine a kid whose read fairytales about how hope and belief conquer all or whatever. This is Momoi, even in the present.
It's not that he's suddenly deciding to be nice either. I think it's easy to forget that Tarou, at his core, just wants to help people.
So here's his friend, who showed up where he was revived and is probably one of the reasons he's alive, and she's hurt. His first instinct is: "I want to help her." He would be like this even if it was some rando.
Haruka and Tarou's first extended interaction together was Haruka asking this weird delivery dude if he wanted to do her dishes, and the guy then actually doing her dishes LOL.
Their first extended interaction, therefore, is of Momoi helping her with something she didn't want to do.
Later in that same episode, she realizes (through helping deliver packages), just what kind of BS Momoi goes through daily. Even to the point of thinking back on how SHE treated him and viewed him as some weird creep.
Tumblr media
Then Don Momotarou (who is a mask Momoi puts on when he enters battle and that he sees as being a separate figure from himself) attacks her in battle. Who wouldn't be like
????
Like here's this dude who is a little weird but doing his best even when he gets treated/viewed sh*tty by other people, suddenly attacking her (and the other team members) like a maniac.
Tumblr media
She can't question him at work, but talks to Jin who informs her of Tarou's past of just trying to help, therefore pushing people away, and being left abandoned and alone, not realizing he's hated by the very people he tried to help.
She then meets Shinichi and he rationalizes that it's because he's trying to train them. Train, is another way to help someone.
So they work together to try and beat the sh*t out of him, and fail miserably LOL. To which, she ends up in the episode 5 scenario. This time she learns that Tarou wants to help others because he doesn't know what happiness is. She sees him reprimand Tsubasa for opening and eating someone else's package/bread, and she also sees how diligent he is (coming into work a day before they open to get things prepared) and that he doesn't care one millimeter about the shenanigans going on around him. (Hostage situation.) She then watched as this dude who just scolded the Big Bad Fugitive for stealing/opening packages comes to that same guy's defense.
"I think he's telling the truth." And how he believed that because of something as small and simple as not throwing away the package label.
And then she hears his words about how they're all selfish (which objectively, in that episode, waayyyy too true LOL), and when asked what he is then, him stating how he doesn't know what happiness is. How he's helping make others happy to learn. Then of course, the iconic birthday scene, where he gives his own gift/cake to Tsubasa, and sings for him on his birthday, even giving Tsubasa his own strawberry.
Tumblr media
Is it really so hard to imagine this same guy wanting to do something nice for Haruka?
For the love implication, I read that more as familial/platonic LOL. (Though its absolutely understandable why that would set you off, since Tarou reminds you of your bullies.)
I would just like to say though, that Haruka has experienced losing a friend to the One Toned Trio before. And now this dude who she's been spending most of her time with is suddenly killed in front of her. The same guy she nursed back from being frail and ill to being healthy again.
The guy, who even sick, still thought it was more important than his own health to deliver packages. The guy who she watched be laughed at by her classmates for telling the truth, the guy she learned couldn't lie or it would kill him. This dude she knows was abandoned and isolated and hated his entire life because he couldn't change who he was and he didn't realize his "help" was causing the people he wanted to help to hate him.
Tumblr media
Like even Haruka has family that would take care of her if she got sick. But, who does Tarou have? No one. It was her and Shinichi that nursed him back to health.
I can see Haruka empathizing and relating to Momoi's isolation, of being judged and hated for things outside of his control. In fact her cheering Tarou on (in her mind) when he was attempting to compliment them in episode 13 shows that she wants to see him grow and learn as a person. Haruka almost reminds me more of an older sister, or younger sister with a pathetic older brother (LOL)!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Especially because to me, Momoi really does have this child-like innocence about him. And I think Haruka really recognizes that, and wants to help him grow as a person.
Tumblr media
So this dude she felt at least somewhat responsible for is killed in front of her, the exact same way, and by the exact same person that killed her high school friend. And likewise, she watches as Momoi fizzles to red pixels. It's traumatizing.
Seeing him back for real probably let all that stress she was suffocating under finally reach the surface. (Same with Kijino and Shinichi.) They all essentially have their breakdown.
And so Haruka yells at and hugs her loser older brother who can't do things on his own without trouble following close behind. And Tarou apologizes "Sorry I made you wait so long."
Tumblr media
aka "Sorry I hurt you guys by getting myself into trouble." (This was my fault, and you guys helped me.)
And then he smiles, because for the first time perhaps ever, he has people that care enough about his life to cry for him and try to help bring him back.
He isn't alone anymore.
Anyways. Finally made my rounds through your asks lol!
Understandable why you stopped Donbros. I hope you continue to take care of your health, my friend. I'm looking forward to finishing Revice with y'all, and of course, starting Geats lol.
